Sources

Hi. Please remember to cite reliable sources when adding content to an article. —Biscuit-in-Chief :-) (TalkContribs) 18:36, 2 November 2019 (UTC)

Sources

Thanks for contributing to the article Taborites. However, one of Wikipedia's core policies is that contributions must be verifiable through reliable sources, preferably using inline citations. Please help by adding more sources to the article you edited, and/or by clarifying how the sources already given support the claims (see here for how to do inline referencing). If you need further help, you can look at Help:Contents/Editing Wikipedia, or ask at the Teahouse, or just ask me. Thank you. - Epinoia (talk) 15:40, 4 November 2019 (UTC)

Wikipedia and copyright

Hello Grnrchst, and welcome to Wikipedia. While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues.

  • You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
  • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. (There is a college-level introduction to paraphrase, with examples, hosted by the Online Writing Lab of Purdue.) Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
  • Our primary policy on using copyrighted content is Wikipedia:Copyrights. You may also want to review Wikipedia:Copy-paste.
  • If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. Such a release must be done in a verifiable manner, so that the authority of the person purporting to release the copyright is evidenced. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
  • In very rare cases (that is, for sources that are PD or compatibly licensed) it may be possible to include greater portions of a source text. However, please seek help at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions, the help desk or the Teahouse before adding such content to the article. 99.9% of sources may not be added in this way, so it is necessary to seek confirmation first. If you do confirm that a source is public domain or compatibly licensed, you will still need to provide full attribution; see Wikipedia:Plagiarism for the steps you need to follow.
  • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps in Wikipedia:Translation#How to translate. See also Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia.

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 13:31, 13 November 2019 (UTC)

Anarchism

Hi Grnrchst,

I saw your work on articles related to anarchism and wanted to say hello, as I work in the topic area too. If you haven't already, you might want to watch our noticeboard for Wikipedia's coverage of anarchism, which is a great place to ask questions, collaborate, discuss style/structure precedent, and stay informed about content related to anarchism. Take a look for yourself!

And if you're looking for other juicy places to edit, consider expanding a stub, adopting a cleanup category, or participating in one of our current formal discussions.

Feel free to say hi on my talk page and let me know if these links were helpful (or at least interesting). Hope to see you around. czar 01:41, 14 November 2019 (UTC)

Hi Grnrchst, I accidentaly used the rollback button, my appologies. (Please see Talk:Anarcho-pacifism#Black_and_white_bisected_flag for the reason why I did removed the flag. It's Wikipedia-fantasy. Adding Native American infoboxes

I've noticed a number of small mistakes/factual inaccuracies in your recent additions of infoboxes (specifically the Old Copper Complex and Adena culture articles). Information in the infoboxes should be contained within and cited in the article body. Please be careful what you include in them in the future. Cheers, Heiro 23:02, 17 June 2020 (UTC)

Translating

Thank you for creating Land and Freedom Column. It appears to be a translation of the Spanish language article "Columna Tierra y Libertad". When you translate text from a foreign language Wikipedia you should provide attribution to the original authors in your edit summary and by adding a translation tag to the talk page, as I have done in this instance. This is a Wikipedia requirement to conform to its copyright obligations. Thanks. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 08:44, 30 June 2020 (UTC)

Please comply with the copyright requirements outlined by Cwmhiraeth above. I note you have subsequently created Central Committee of Antifascist Militias of Catalonia, a translation of es:Comité Central de Milicias Antifascistas de Cataluña without leaving the attribution that is required. --John B123 (talk) 16:02, 30 June 2020 (UTC)
Apologies. I'll make sure to do this in future,. Grnrchst (talk) 16:06, 30 June 2020 (UTC)
Hi Grnrchst, nice job on translating some of these articles on anarchism. Just one issue: One usually doesn't translate the titles of sources (books and the like), since that can make it impossible to find the source being cited. The only exception would be if one is referencing a translation of a source. So, for instance, when citing Cappelletti and Rama's El anarquismo en América Latina one would use the Spanish title unless one is citing the English translation of this book. In the latter case, one would then give the page number in the translation and not the original. I've gone ahead and fixed this in the article Anarchism in Paraguay, but I see you've created several more articles with the same issue. I can fix those, but it might take me a little while to get around to it. If you could do it, that would be very helpful.--Carabinieri (talk) 20:25, 17 July 2020 (UTC)
Ok, thanks for letting me know! I'll be sure to fix any sources I find. Grnrchst (talk) 20:40, 17 July 2020 (UTC)
  • Hi, nice continued work with your Español translations! In your edit summaries, when the translation largely relies on Google Translate, it's worth noting this for attribution purposes. Google translations of cc-by-sa Wikipedia content remains freely licensed but if the translation is more or less what Google spits out, it helps for posterity to know whether the translation was mostly by machine or by hand. czar 02:46, 19 September 2020 (UTC)

uvw logo, membership numbers

Hey G

Thanks for doing the infobox on United Voices of the World, I have tried to update the logo today and wonder if there's an easy way to avoid the permissions/copyright hoops. In theory I can have someone edit the website and upload the logo on a blank page and state that it's cool to republish

Also the membership stats. Box 1 states "3,000 (2020)" and Box 2 states "1,200 (2018)". Is there any way to fix Box 2?

Cheers for your time

Carlos — Preceding unsigned comment added by CarlosatUVW (talkcontribs) 18:20, 27 July 2020 (UTC)

Hi Carlos. The membership number in the infobox was changed to 3,000 (2020) by User:Sujalajus but the citation listed only gives information up to the figure of 1,200 (2018). I'll be reverting this change, unless there is published information of more recent membership numbers to cite. Grnrchst (talk) 18:30, 27 July 2020 (UTC)

Thanks again. There is in fact published info in the FT saying 3,000 members: https://www.ft.com/content/576c68ea-3784-11ea-a6d3-9a26f8c3cba4

Can we quickly sort out the unbalanced tag? What needs to be changed? Thanks

-C — Preceding unsigned comment added by CarlosatUVW (talkcontribs) 14:31, 3 August 2020 (UTC)

Hi again. Thanks for providing a source, I think it's fair to change that now. (Though I don't know if there's any site-wide rules about sources on membership numbers) As for the unbalanced tag, I think much of the language in the article needs to be neutralized, this is something I'm willing to do when I have the time and energy. It's an incredibly well-sourced article, this is something you should be proud of, I just want to make sure there's no remaining bias in the writing before submitting this for review. (For example: I changed the title of a section labelled "Notable victories" to "Campaign history", as it presented an unbalanced perspective) Grnrchst (talk) 14:56, 3 August 2020 (UTC)

OK, sounds good. I'll do my best with revising the existing text and continue to expand the page in the coming weeks. Will be in touch again soon. Cheers — Preceding unsigned comment added by CarlosatUVW (talkcontribs) 17:43, 3 August 2020 (UTC)

I've created a few new sections, and think we're ready to start looking at the balance/bias. Could you take a couple of minutes to scan the page and copy me a couple of glaring examples, to give me a general idea of what needs to change? Also need some help with the infobox - the aforementioned 3,000 members and link needs to replace the old figure which has an invalid citation. Cheers — Preceding unsigned comment added by CarlosatUVW (talkcontribs) 11:03, 20 August 2020 (UTC)

Missing cites in Andorran Revolution

The article cites "Peruga Guerrero 1998", "Jordi Planellas 2013", and "Segalàs 2012", but no such source are listed in bibliography. Can you please add? Also, suggest installing a script (explained at Category:Harv and Sfn no-target errors) to highlight such errors in the future. Thanks, Renata (talk) 03:40, 23 September 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for letting me know! I just added them back in, both on the english language and catalan language articles. Grnrchst (talk) 09:56, 23 September 2020 (UTC)

Thanks! Similar issue with Enric Pérez i Farràs: citing "Romero 1994" and "Alexander 2007" (is Alexander supposed to be vol 2 of the work cited in bibliography?) Renata (talk) 18:18, 23 September 2020 (UTC)

Can you also clarify what edition of "Engel" (2005 or 1999) is cited in 70th Mixed Brigade and 147th Mixed Brigade. The two articles cite the work with different years but same ISBN. 18:31, 23 September 2020 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Anarchism in Costa Rica

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Anarchism in Costa Rica requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be an unambiguous copyright infringement. This page appears to be a direct copy from https://theanarchistlibrary.org/library/angel-cappelletti-anarchism-in-latin-america. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Wikipedia's copyright policy for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Former country infoboxes

Hi. Please stop adding the former country inboxes to Indonesia articles. The liberal democracy period, Guided democracy, the New Order were political eras in Indonesia, not countries. The country of Indonesia still exists. Thank you. Regards Davidelit (Talk) 14:44, 6 February 2021 (UTC)

Hi, I wasn't trying to imply that with the additions, apologies. Would there be a better category of infobox to use to specify that they are political eras (perhaps country, historical era or political system?), or would it be better if I just left them off entirely?--Grnrchst (talk) 15:00, 6 February 2021 (UTC)

Hi! Thanks for getting into contact about this. I've added archive.org links to the citations with dead links, so that part should be sorted. Of course, both of those articles were written by Antti Rautiainen himself, so I'm not sure if fixing that adequately deals with the issue of the sources being reliable and independent. I can look into further sources to add to the draft if this isn't satisfactory enough for review submission.--Grnrchst (talk) 18:27, 8 February 2021 (UTC)

For example, Ramos 1994 is the second edition of the Ramos 1972 text. Will go through the Spanish Republican Army stuff I've worked on and see if anything else needs fixing. Thanks again.--Grnrchst (talk) 19:26, 15 March 2021 (UTC)

Rumor mill

Hi, Grnrchst sorry for making this public but there is no private messaging feature here and I did not know where else to say it, There was somebody in a social media anarchist group a couple of days ago calling you out specifically for your work on List of anarchist communities, probably someone involved in an edit dispute there, and accusing you of being a Marxist who uses Wikipedia with the malicious intent to malign anarchist topics here. This is all insane sounding and whatever ideology you may or may not hold is irrelevant I know but I just thought you should be aware as it may result in brigading of the article mentioned or others that you have put (a lot of good) work into. SP00KYtalk 18:50, 15 March 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for informing me. That's incredibly strange and really saddening to hear, considering how much work I've put in to the anarchism wiki project thus far. I'm even actively working on a massive article translation right now... I'll keep an eye on the possible brigading of articles, but don't know how else I can action this really. This kind of thing makes me glad I've largely strayed away from social media. :( --Grnrchst (talk) 19:23, 15 March 2021 (UTC)
No problem, Yes, i'd usually ignore such deranged nonsense on social media but have seen your edits and pages you have made here multiple times, i pointed out publicy the person making such claims you have been an active contributor to wiki-project anarchism with a link to your contributions. I like to think nobody but the person who has edit problems will not take this seriously. thanks and keep up the good work. :) SP00KYtalk 09:12, 17 March 2021 (UTC)

Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you copied or moved text from one or more pages into Anarchism in Africa. While you are welcome to re-use Wikipedia's content, here or elsewhere, Wikipedia's licensing does require that you provide attribution to the original contributor(s). When copying within Wikipedia, this is supplied at minimum in an edit summary at the page into which you've copied content, disclosing the copying and linking to the copied page, e.g., copied content from [[page name]]; see that page's history for attribution. It is good practice, especially if copying is extensive, to also place a properly formatted {{copied}} template on the talk pages of the source and destination. Please provide attribution for this duplication if it has not already been supplied by another editor, and if you have copied material between pages before, even if it was a long time ago, you should provide attribution for that also. Speedy deletion nomination of Intercommunalism

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Intercommunalism, requesting that it be deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under two or more of the criteria for speedy deletion, by which pages can be deleted at any time, without discussion. If the page meets any of these strictly-defined criteria, then it may soon be deleted by an administrator. The reasons it has been tagged are:

  • It is an article with no content whatsoever, or whose contents consist only of external links, a "See also" section, book references, category tags, template tags, interwiki links, a rephrasing of the title, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article. (See section A3 of the criteria for speedy deletion.) Wikipedia has standards for the minimum necessary information to be included in short articles; you can see these at Wikipedia:Stub. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Zoozaz1 talk 17:47, 2 August 2021 (UTC)

User:Zoozaz1 I'm confused. I don't see a speedy deletion tag anywhere, nor does this stated reason seem to align with the article itself, nor have I had anything to do with this article in the past. Why am I being notified about this and... what exactly am I being notified about? --Grnrchst (talk) 19:37, 2 August 2021 (UTC)
The speedy deletion nomination was for the previously existing redirect that had to be deleted to make way for a draft. I presume you were the creator of the redirect. Zoozaz1 talk 20:31, 2 August 2021 (UTC)
Ah yes I think so. Thanks for clearing that up, good to see there's an actual article about this now. --Grnrchst (talk) 21:06, 2 August 2021 (UTC)

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. Original research refers to material—such as facts, allegations, ideas, and personal experiences—for which no reliable, published sources exist; it also encompasses combining published sources in a way to imply something that none of them explicitly say. Please be prepared to cite a reliable source for all of your contributions. You can have a look at the tutorial on citing sources. Thank you. AhmadLX-(Wikiposta) 19:09, 24 January 2022 (UTC)

Hey @AhmadLX:, thanks for catching this and making the necessary changes to the article. Unfortunately I made the edit in question years ago, at a time when I was still new to Wikipedia and unaware of the policies on OR or RS. I'm almost certain that I sourced the text from a translation of the Russian Wikipedia article ru:Азракиты, which may explain the inaccurate information and polemical style that you noted in your edits. This is not something I mentioned in my edit summary at the time, as you can see above, I did not know the policy on translating from other Wikipedias until some months after. (I also just noticed that only a couple months before I made that edit, an IP editor from Saint Petersburg significantly expanded the Russian article, in an enormous edit that is still pending verification by Russian Wikipedians) Apologies for my past errors and thanks again for taking the time to make improvements to this article, feel free to ping me again at any time. Regards. --Grnrchst (talk) 19:33, 24 January 2022 (UTC)
Okay no problem. On Kharijites, EI3 is the current best source. If you need, I can provide you relevant articles. Regards. AhmadLX-(Wikiposta) 20:24, 24 January 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for the offer! I may be interested in adding more information to the article on the Najdat, as it seems like that one still needs some citations. Does the EI3 have any articles about them? --Grnrchst (talk) 20:28, 24 January 2022 (UTC)
Unfortunately no. So far they have these articles on the subject: main (i.e. Kharijites in general), Ibadiyya, and Azariqa. However, I looked into our Wiki article on the Najdat. All the cn-tagged info you can find in this, and EI3's main Kharijite article. However, the former is dated and you should be cautious in using it to give opinions of the author; for hard facts it is a very good source. AhmadLX-(Wikiposta) 21:24, 24 January 2022 (UTC)
Ok noted, I'll be sure to attribute as needed. Thanks again! --Grnrchst (talk) 21:38, 24 January 2022 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Emilian Makhno

The article Emilian Makhno has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

The references in this article inherit notability from this person's brother, Nestor Makhn. That he was shot in mistaken indentity of hisbrother does not give notability. The references do not address the biography of this person.
Given the mandatory requirements for Biography WP:NBIO, the references in this article do not address the notability of this person. Notability is not inherited from his brother.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Aye it seems like there's been a renewal in interest about Makhno lately. Part of what motivated me to see through my work on the article was a big spike in viewership it got a couple months ago. (Although it does seem to be back to the normal <1,000 views per day again) I'll certainly look forward to this new book! Grnrchst (talk) 16:04, 19 May 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for the link! I should point out that it is spectacularly fictional: pretty much everything depicted in the book either didn't happen, happened differently or wasn't quite so dramatic. Decent graphic novel though, the art in particular is excellent. Grnrchst (talk) 16:07, 19 May 2022 (UTC)

Grigoriev/Hryhoriev/Hryhoriv/Nykyfor/Matvii Madness

@Grnrchst I thought I would write you direct to ask how a article move exactly works. Am I correct that after the 11 day period a mod does the actual move based on the consensus achieved in the discussion? By the way, I don't know if you noticed but I changed the proposed move from Nykyfor Hryhoriev to Nykyfor Hryhoriv. I hope this was allowed. If not, I apologize.

Another question I have is what is the goal we are trying to achieve? Is it to provide a historically accurate transliteration, a transliteration based on the currently accepted Ukrainian spelling, or the most commonly used variant in English (which would be the current Russian variant)? The answers would be different in each case, being: Nykyfor Hryhoriv, Nykyfor Hryhoriev, and Nikifor Grigoriev. This is where some of my confusion comes from and maybe also some of differences of opinion appearing in the thread. Honestly, I'm fine with Hryhoriv, Hryhoriev, or even leaving it as russified Grigoriev. The only variant I'm totally opposed to is using Matvii as the first name, which is ahistorical and as far as I know is based on a rumoured nickname. Any help clarifying these questions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! UnknownVolin (talk) 20:18, 12 September 2022 (UTC)

Aye that's correct and yes, you're allowed to change the proposed move, it happens a lot.
Wikipedia's common name policy often ends up winning the day in these kinds of discussions, but they can go the other way if consensus leans that way. Just recently there were quite a few move discussions for Odesa, as it had previously been commonly known by the Russian transliteration "Odessa", but the page was moved when it became clear that the academic and journalistic tendency was moving towards the Ukrainian transliteration. Personally I think this can also be the case for Hryhoriv, and well-reasoned arguments for this are the best course. That the Encyclopedia of Ukraine uses Nykyfor Hryhoriv, I think, is the best indication for the spelling we should use. Grnrchst (talk) 20:53, 12 September 2022 (UTC)
That makes sense. Thanks. I imagine when Ukrainian and Russian wikis collide over toponyms it can get testy. By the way, I read your interview with The Commoner. I really enjoyed it. UnknownVolin (talk) 22:31, 12 September 2022 (UTC)
