Hi .. quick query re coordinates, as you appear expert in them. Why are they helpful (I might be interested in availing myself of their helpfulness), and how does one quickly find them to add them to an article? Many thanks.--Epeefleche (talk) 23:10, 31 January 2010 (UTC)

Coordinates add context to an article and icons appear on google earth (eventually). I use google images, Bing birdseye view and google streetview to cross reference locations. Then I centre google maps on the location and copy this code into the address bar and press enter

Then I copy the text out of dialogue box, paste it into the article and trim the coordinates to appropriate accuracy (usually 4 decimal places for a building). Grim²³★ 17:41, 1 February 2010 (UTC)

Trumpers Crossing co-ords

I have no reference to hand but I wonder if the location you have just given for Trumpers Crossing Halt is correct as it is NW of where Trumpers Way meets the railway and Trumpers Way seems to have the only bridge over the canal.--SilasW (talk) 15:45, 1 February 2010 (UTC)

Noam Chomsky

Wondering... On what basis do you consider this edit to represent a misunderstanding of state capitalism? Pinkville (talk) 05:43, 4 February 2010 (UTC)

I've always understood state capitalism to be a term criticising soviet style communism. After your query, I found this article [2] where Chomsky uses the term in a wider sense, but I think he's making a point about semantics. National Space Centre

Hello,

I noticed that you have deleted my additions to the National Space Centre page citing that I used copyrighted material with out permission. I do actually work at the National Space Centre and was given full permission to use what ever I wanted. Is there another form of permission I need. Hello Davidspace, there are instructions on how get copyright permission here. I don't think the text as it stands is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia. The text has a promotional tone and some of the language is quite "flowery", it might be better to have a straightforward encyclopedic description of the gallery contents. As you work at the centre you might have a conflict of interest, so it might be better if you discuss changes you want to make on the article's talkpage. I hope this answers your question. I have created a new page, Nature reserves in Barnet, a table of reserves listed in Barnet on the Mayor of London's Wildweb. I have put in coordinates for the few sites where I found Wikipedia articles I could paste them from. The Wildweb site is very good, but its one weakness is in giving the location of sites, with only an illegible map, so I have put in whatever location I could find from Google etc. It will be quite a large job, but could you look at the page and check the locations and put in the missing coordinates? List of King George V Playing Fields in London

Today, I clicked on the grid references it took me to the correct Geohack page, (although when I clicked on the globe icon, it took me to Miniwiki atlas which has never worked properly for me). If you click on the grid reference does it work now? Grim²³★ 16:12, 6 September 2010 (UTC)

Agressive anti-Serbian edit removals, lack of civility etc.

I have added references for the part that you keep deleting. Your hostility towards edits that are based on a bit more local knowledge than that of a person from far away, is noted. As you certainly know full well, not every bit of information added to wikipedia is referenced, and not every bit that is not sourced needs to be savagely deleted. These facts are well known in Serbia where they had huge media cover, and you could have easily googled the sources and checked the facts yourself, if you had any shred of good faith and civil decency. But no, you had to attack and remove edits, post notices, and behave like some smart alec. If you think you can intimidate people, who you obviously profoundly disrespect, think again. And as you hand wave NPOV and other policies as some sort of ultimate authority, you must be also aware that you need to keep your political, colonial, racist, sexist or any other sort of bias that you might have under control. Hello I'm sorry if I have appeared uncivil or aggressive. The trouble is, if you are using your local knowledge it needs to be backed up by reliable sources. Although you are correct that not all information on Wikipedia is sourced, the burden of evidence lies with the editor who added the information. Information without a reliable source directly supporting it can be deleted by anyone. You mention the notices I left on your talkpage, the first one I left welcomed you and assumed good faith and the second was neutral. You say NPOV should not be used as "some sort of ultimate authority", but adhering to a neutral point of view IS one the five core policies of Wikipedia. Another of the five core policies is civility. I believe you have overstepped the mark with some of you assertions about my character in your above message, please could you strike through or delete them, and restrict your comments to improving the encyclopedia. St Symeon/Seleucia Pieria

The List of ancient Greek cities shows St Symeon (the Crusader port of Antioch) as another name for Seleucia Pieria (the Roman port of Antioch). I am almost sure this is wrong, and they were too different places, and I have posted a question on Orionist's talk page to ask whether he can confirm. Steven Runciman in his history of the First Crusade gives Suadiye as the modern name for St Symeon, and I now see that the OWTRAD Gazeteer at http://www.ciolek.com/OWTRAD/gazetteer-05.html has entries

AIV reports of IP editors

Regarding this report, we don't normally block IP editors unless they have gotten the full spate of warnings recently and are vandalizing now. This guy's last vandalism was about 12 hours ago, so it needs the full series of warnings. If the IP is not vandalizing now, there is no way of knowing if the IP has since changed (this one appears dynamic based on contributions) and thus a block would have no effect on the person that was actually using that IP to vandalize.
