Re: Bosnian Muslims in the NDH

Yes, I agree treat 1940s Bosnian Muslims as just "Croats" would be subscribing to the extremist ideology of the time and anachronistic and devoid of basic scientific rigor today. Certainly it doesn't hurt to also repeat that such references to "Croatia" during WWII should be replaced with "Independent State of Croatia", because the nature and scope of that political entity are substantially different from both Croatia in the centuries prior and in the decades after. --Joy [shallot] (talk) 10:10, 13 November 2022 (UTC)

Sorry for jumping in, I am clicking around from page to page on en.wiki and I just ended up on Joy's talk page and saw your question. :-) Hope you not mind about me also writing my opinion. Such people were indeed viewed as Croats in the NDH and many have unironically described themself as such, yes – but I totally agree with you that it is just one POV. Maybe it is indeed more accurate and more compatible with WP:NPOV to describe such people as "ethnic Muslim (their profession) in the I. S. of Croatia"?
Example: "Name Surname (1. January 1880 – 31 December 1945) was an ethnic Muslim lawyer, author and politican in the Independent State of Croatia." (Basically "ethnic Muslim", or "Bosnian Muslim", instead of "Croatian".)
What do you think about this? :-) Best regards, Koreanovsky (talk) 19:41, 16 November 2022 (UTC)
This is fine too. We also often employ this location form in different cases, where e.g. there's a sportsperson who competed for the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. --Joy [shallot] (talk) 20:51, 16 November 2022 (UTC)
@Koreanovsky:, @Joy: Yes. I also think that such a wording would be the best solution. It is also consistent with WP:ETHNICITY: "ethnicity, religion, or sexuality should generally not be in the lead sentence unless relevant to the subject's notability. In the case of the NDH politicians and officials, ethnicity is very often an important factor for their notability. In addition, in this way, additional entanglements around nationality disputes would be avoided and it would contribute to the stability of the articles. Governor Sheng (talk) 22:20, 16 November 2022 (UTC)
@Governor Sheng:, @Joy: I personally would go so far to say that "ethnic Muslim" is better than "Bosnian Muslim". Not all of them were from Bosnia-Herzegovina, some were maybe from modern-day Serbia or Montenegro and as said, some unironically claimed to be Croats, such as Džafer Kulenović. I know that the term "Bosnian" does not say anything about the actual nationality, but I think "ethnic Muslim" is better because it does not refer directly to a geographic location. :-) Stay awesome, Koreanovsky (talk) 00:01, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
The regional origin of some of them notwithstanding, the generally used term is "Bosnian Muslim", this is a widely-used scholarly term. I think we should avoid our own conclusions since that would be against WP:OR. Plus the so-called "Muslims with capital M" relates more to the 1960s Yugoslav politics, rather than a previously existing ethnic group. Governor Sheng (talk) 00:08, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
Good morning! :-) Sheng, do you know if there is any manual of style or guideline for the former Yugoslavia on en.wiki, as they have it on de.wiki? Best regards, Koreanovsky (talk) 06:18, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
I don't think so, but I think it would be really useful to have written (e.g. "Yugoslav" vs. "Yugoslavian", usage of "Macedonia" for its predecessor, how and when to refer to the 1992–2003 FR Yugoslavia as "Yugoslavia" vs. "Serbia and Montenegro", etc). This above could be covered there too, as with any other issues that come up. -Vipz (talk) 09:31, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
That I do not know. What is the MOS at the German Wiki? Governor Sheng (talk) 12:35, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
@Vipz:, @Governor Sheng: I was talking about this: de:Wikipedia:Richtlinien Südosteuropa; "Guidelines for South East Europe". There is even a section for "Pavelić-Croats" and how to treat such historical persons in articles. Stay awesome, Koreanovsky (talk) 21:48, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
I have never encountered a similar MOS being employed at the English Wikipedia. I think as for now, it depends on the consensus of editors. Governor Sheng (talk) 18:53, 18 November 2022 (UTC)

Hey there. It's been a while. I've drafted an RfC to be posted at RSN in my sandbox. It'd be helpful if you gave me some suggestions about it. Aaron Liu (talk) 12:47, 9 December 2022 (UTC)
Hi @Aaron Liu: good to hear from you. I read the draft, I think it's good, it summerises evereything well. I would give it a go. Governor Sheng (talk) 22:06, 9 December 2022 (UTC)
On second thought, how about a simple question, only from the first paragraph, because I doubt other users will be enthusiastic to chek all those sources, and especially so because their in non-English languages. Governor Sheng (talk) 20:02, 10 December 2022 (UTC)
I don't get what you're saying. Which simple question? Isn't the first line already the simple question required by the rfc format? Aaron Liu (talk) 20:18, 10 December 2022 (UTC)
Yes, the first two paragraphs to be more precise, and maybe the question on the sources' reliability can be omitted? Governor Sheng (talk) 20:38, 10 December 2022 (UTC)
Isn't the noticeboard's purpose to discuss sources' reliability? Aaron Liu (talk) 23:08, 10 December 2022 (UTC)
Oh, sorry, sorry, I thought you're making a rfc at the West Herzegovina Canton talk page. :) Forget what I said then. I guess I'm still fussy in my head because of the World Cup. :) Governor Sheng (talk) 00:06, 11 December 2022 (UTC)

You should be able to use the Help:Move function to do that. I can't verify the name is written with uppercase S because there is no article about the village, though. Re: Transfermarkt

Thank you for replacing this site, however, your assessment in this edit summary is incorrect. It is specifically Transfermarkt's stats database (ie player/club profiles, match reports, transfer list etc) that is user-edited and therefore unreliable. There have been a few suspected circular reporting incidents over the years, where inaccurate information that likely originated on Wikipedia made its way onto Transfermarkt. It should not be cited under any circumstances. Please do not do so again. Sir Sputnik (talk) 23:28, 26 January 2023 (UTC)

New Pages Patrol newsletter June 2023

Hello Governor Sheng,

New Page Review queue April to June 2023

Backlog

Redirect drive: In response to an unusually high redirect backlog, we held a redirect backlog drive in May. The drive completed with 23851 reviews done in total, bringing the redirect backlog to 0 (momentarily). Congratulations to Hey man im josh who led with a staggering 4316 points, followed by Meena and Greyzxq with 2868 and 2546 points respectively. See this page for more details. The redirect queue is steadily rising again and is steadily approaching 4,000. Please continue to help out, even if it's only for a few or even one review a day.

Redirect autopatrol: All administrators without autopatrol have now been added to the redirect autopatrol list. If you see any users who consistently create significant amounts of good quality redirects, consider requesting redirect autopatrol for them here.

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team, consisting of Sam, Jason and Susana, and also some patches from Jon, has been hard at work updating PageTriage. They are focusing their efforts on modernising the extension's code rather than on bug fixes or new features, though some user-facing work will be prioritised. This will help make sure that this extension is not deprecated, and is easier to work on in the future. In the next month or so, we will have an opt-in beta test where new page patrollers can help test the rewrite of Special:NewPagesFeed, to help find bugs. We will post more details at WT:NPPR when we are ready for beta testers.

Articles for Creation (AFC): All new page reviewers are now automatically approved for Articles for Creation draft reviewing (you do not need to apply at WT:AFCP like was required previously). To install the AFC helper script, visit Special:Preferences, visit the Gadgets tab, tick "Yet Another AFC Helper Script", then click "Save". To find drafts to review, visit Special:NewPagesFeed, and at the top left, tick "Articles for Creation". To review a draft, visit a submitted draft, click on the "More" menu, then click "Review (AFCH)". You can also comment on and submit drafts that are unsubmitted using the script.

You can review the AFC workflow at WP:AFCR. It is up to you if you also want to mark your AFC accepts as NPP reviewed (this is allowed but optional, depends if you would like a second set of eyes on your accept). Don't forget that draftspace is optional, so moves of drafts to mainspace (even if they are not ready) should not be reverted, except possibly if there is conflict of interest.

Pro tip: Did you know that visual artists such as painters have their own SNG? The most common part of this "creative professionals" criteria that applies to artists is WP:ARTIST 4b (solo exhibition, not group exhibition, at a major museum) or 4d (being represented within the permanent collections of two museums).

Reminders

June 2023

Your recent editing history at Bosnia and Herzegovina national football team shows that you are currently engaged in an edit war; that means that you are repeatedly changing content back to how you think it should be, when you have seen that other editors disagree. To resolve the content dispute, please do not revert or change the edits of others when you are reverted. Instead of reverting, please use the talk page to work toward making a version that represents consensus among editors. The best practice at this stage is to discuss, not edit-war; read about how this is done. If discussions reach an impasse, you can then post a request for help at a relevant noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, you may wish to request temporary page protection.

Being involved in an edit war can result in you being blocked from editing—especially if you violate the three-revert rule, which states that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Undoing another editor's work—whether in whole or in part, whether involving the same or different material each time—counts as a revert. Also keep in mind that while violating the three-revert rule often leads to a block, you can still be blocked for edit warring—even if you do not violate the three-revert rule—should your behavior indicate that you intend to continue reverting repeatedly. Speedy deletion nomination of Category:Bosnia and Herzegovina military personnel

A tag has been placed on Category:Bosnia and Herzegovina military personnel indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and removing the speedy deletion tag. Liz Read! Talk! 07:12, 4 August 2023 (UTC)

New pages patrol newsletter

Hello Governor Sheng,

New Page Review article queue, March to September 2023

Backlog update: At the time of this message, there are 11,300 articles and 15,600 redirects awaiting review. This is the highest backlog in a long time. Please help out by doing additional reviews!

October backlog elimination drive: A one-month backlog drive for October will start in one week! Barnstars will be awarded based on the number of articles and redirects patrolled. Articles will earn 4x as many points compared to redirects. You can sign up here.

PageTriage code upgrades: Upgrades to the PageTriage code, initiated by the NPP open letter in 2022 and actioned by the WMF Moderator Tools Team in 2023, are ongoing. More information can be found here. As part of this work, the Special:NewPagesFeed now has a new version in beta! The update leaves the NewPagesFeed appearance and function mostly identical to the old one, but updates the underlying code, making it easier to maintain and helping make sure the extension is not decommissioned due to maintenance issues in the future. You can try out the new Special:NewPagesFeed here - it will replace the current version soon.

Notability tip: Professors can meet WP:PROF #1 by having their academic papers be widely cited by their peers. When reviewing professor articles, it is a good idea to find their Google Scholar or Scopus profile and take a look at their h-index and number of citations. As a very rough rule of thumb, for most fields, articles on people with a h-index of twenty or more, a first-authored paper with more than a thousand citations, or multiple papers each with more than a hundred citations are likely to be kept at AfD.

Reviewing tip: If you would like like a second opinion on your reviews or simply want another new page reviewer by your side when patrolling, we recommend pair reviewing! This is where two reviewers use Discord voice chat and screen sharing to communicate with each other while reviewing the same article simultaneously. This is a great way to learn and transfer knowledge.

Elect vs designate

When a priest is appointed a Bishop, he is known as "Bishop-elect" until his episcopal consecration. When an already consecrated bishop is appointed Bishop of another diocese, he is know as "Bishop-designate" until he is installed as a Bishop. It is true that bishops are not elected, but this title has remained in use, and is mentioned in the Code of Canon Law and in the Rite of Episcopal Consecration.   Your addition to Kotar (subdivision) has been removed or altered, as it appears to closely paraphrase a copyrighted source. However, longer paraphrases which are not attributed to their source may constitute copyright violation or plagiarism, and are not acceptable on Wikipedia. Such content cannot be hosted here for legal reasons; please do not post it on any page, even if you plan to fix it later. You may use external websites or printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words.

If you own the copyright to the text, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use it — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. The content of [1] is referenced to [2] but appears to be a very close translation of it. Benedikt Vinković

Hi, you recently added footnotes pointing to Kudelić 2000 but there is no citation to support them. If you could throw that in you'll get the page off the harv no-target error list. Thanks. Andy02124 (talk) 19:22, 14 February 2024 (UTC)

Thank you for your notification. The issue is resolved. Governor Sheng (talk) 17:07, 15 February 2024 (UTC)

Invitation to join New pages patrol

Hello Governor Sheng!

  • The New Pages Patrol is currently struggling to keep up with the influx of new articles needing review. We could use a few extra hands to help.
  • We think that someone with your activity and experience is very likely to meet the guidelines for granting.
  • Reviewing/patrolling a page doesn't take much time, but it requires a strong understanding of Wikipedia’s CSD policy and notability guidelines.
  • Kindly read the tutorial before making your decision, and feel free to post on the project talk page with questions.
  • If patrolling new pages is something you'd be willing to help out with, please consider applying here.

Thank you for your consideration. We hope to see you around!

Herzegovina Affair

Hi, you recently added back a footnote pointing to Jukić 2004. It had been removed last June because it was not supported with a full citation. It still isn't, so if you could one one, it will be another article crossed off the harv error list. Thanks. Andy02124 (talk) 22:43, 22 February 2024 (UTC)

DYK for Lovro Šitović

On 13 March 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Lovro Šitović, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. New Pages Patrol newsletter April 2024

Hello Governor Sheng,

New Page Review queue January to March 2024

Backlog update: The October drive reduced the article backlog from 11,626 to 7,609 and the redirect backlog from 16,985 to 6,431! Congratulations to Schminnte, who led with over 2,300 points.

Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.

Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion.

It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!

2023 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2023 cup with 17,761 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 50/day. There was one Platinum Award (10,000+ reviews), 2 Gold Awards (5000+ reviews), 6 Silver (2000+), 8 Bronze (1000+), 30 Iron (360+) and 70 more for the 100+ barnstar. Hey man im josh led on redirect reviews by clearing 36,175 of them. For the full details, see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone for their efforts in reviewing!

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits.

Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited.

Reviewing tip: Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages within their most familiar subjects can use the regularly updated NPP Browser tool.
