Yorkshireisms

I find it strange that you have cut out words that you have never heard of, but have put in words that you have personally heard. It is one-sided, and a POV. If everyone did that, there would be about five words in the article. andreasegde 00:21, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

Ahhh... I just looked at your sandbox work, because I overlooked it before. Sorry.

If I can be honest for all of us I would say that it´s a monumental piece of work that has to be done. Mammoth. (There some words in the sandbox - like Clemmy - that I have never heard of, BTW.) Problems:

• "nonstandard pronunciation information which should be rewritten using the International Phonetic Alphabet." If it’s not a problem now, it will be later.
• The oft-written comment that it should be split up into sections (north, south etc.)
• The certainty that editors will constantly come along and “lob” words in willy-nilly.
• Vandals.

I would like to tip my hat to you for trying to clean out this article. It's been annoying me for a while that it's so wildly un-encyclopedic. Wikipedia is not an indiscriminate collection of information etc.

Personally, I would merge the best stuff into the Yorkshire Dialect and Accent page, and leave the original page as a user page where people can add all sorts of fun but unsourced stuff. Or maybe rename it to The Yorkshire dialect in popular culture to allow lots of ref. to Last of the Summer Wine, Bold as Brass etc. It seems like it's always going to be very hard to make this encyclopedic, and it's not clear why this needs to be separate from the Yorkshire Dialect and Accent page.

Anyhow, I just wanted to give you some encouragement. I will try and help a bit but I don't think I can commit to what this is really gonna take. Dave w74 17:34, 17 October 2006 (UTC)

Limerick Rugby

You asked about GAA and Rugby in Limerick. While Rugby is big in Limerick, it is still dwarfed by Hurling. Munster Rugby games get 15,000 crowds max (usually only maybe 5,000) while Limerick hurling games get 30,000 to 55,000 or upwards depending on what game it is.

On top of that, the sheer number of players of both sports in Limerick are on different scales. You might have 3,000 Rugby players max, while there would be upwards of 20,000 hurlers in County Limerick.Niall123 00:51, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

And the scoreboard is more determinative than the jersey, or the NZRFU, or the website, or fact that in common parlance that's what everyone on the planet refers to this team as, is it? Says who? What I don't understand is what your beef is - if there is a redirect from New Zealand National Rugby Union Team, which there always has been, how could anyone be confused or disadvantaged about this? You type in "New Zealand National Rugby Union Team" and it loads a page headed "All Blacks" and the very first sentence of the page is "The "All Blacks" is the name of New Zealand's international rugby union team." any doubt, confusion or ambiguity is, I humbly submit, immediately dispelled? RE: Category:Sport in Ireland

Ah ok, I thought that the discussion was leading to relegating Category:Rugby union in Ireland to a subcategory of Category:Sport in Northern Ireland while excluding rugby union in Category:Sport in Ireland for some reason. I agree that it should a subcat of both, so I think we're on the same page; the misunderstanding probably stemmed from my not knowing that Category:Rugby union in Ireland was already a subcategory of Category:Sport in Ireland. Leeds United Article

Hi. I'm considering editing the Leeds United article into a few smaller articles as when you click edit at the top now it say's it's too long plus the page seems too long in general to me anyway. You're one of the people registered as a wikipedian Leeds United AFC fan in the category that I thought I may get a serious response out of so I was wondering what your thoughts were on which sections should be moved to different pages and linked in the club page. I will do all of the work on this (unless you want to do some yourself) but I’m currently after a few peoples opinions so I can sort the page out on a general consensus. I see that you voted oppose on Talk: Blues (rugby team), saying all the names would need a disambiguate. If you exclude moving the Blues rugby article, the other three pages (Chiefs, Hurricanes, Highlanders) are all redirects, as the page Crusaders once was. Hi! I saw that you reverted the 1893 final of the French championship with racing as winners. But there was a mistake in the original article : Stade Français actually won, Racing were runner-up, so I'm reverting it again. Clck on the green links, you'll get details for each match. Harlow Rugby Club

Hi,

I know you have an interest in both codes of rugby and have assisted with our new entry. However, some idiot has vandalised the site, removed pictures and wants to delete the whole entry. I am not an experienced Wiki author and don't understand why this prat would want to do this. Can you return the Harlow entry to how it was prior to the unwanted intervention and tell the guy who did it to sod off please? I read some of his talk page and it seems he is a serial deleter of new entries. If there was anything wrong with the Harlow site (I looked at loads of other entries before submitting the Harlow RUFC entry) then please advise although I assume you would have said something when yo edited before if anything was intrinsically wrong with it.

Near Miss?

If by a "near miss" you mean that there was a crop failure, but the government took action to prevent that from turning into a famine, then I think you are making the point that famines do not occur in democracies stronger. JS 00:28, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

• I agree that one should not write that the British deliberately caused the Bengal famine, and if such a claim is made it should be backed up by a considerable body of cites. India was not a democracy prior to the arrival of the British, and possibly there were famines then, I do not know.   • Hello again Gordy. I think if anyone interprets that article to mean that the British deliberately created the famine, that would not be right. The most accurate interpretation would be that the British-Indian government faced significant challenges during the war, and they had their list of priorities. Yes it is played, although it was called docker soccer where I grew up (West Midlands). I presume this term goes back some way as none of us who played it understood (or were old enough to understand) the reference to dockers and its stereotypes and connotations.

Hull Kingston Rovers

Your recent edit regarding Hull KR beating the touring Aussies in 1967/8 brought back many golden memories for me. I was at that match, and indeed when they beat Hull FC in the Yorkshire Cup final in the same season. You may know that hooker Peter 'Flash' Flanagan has died recently. Both were stars at that time - and much later on - and two of the greatest players The Robins ever had.

I added the {{Unreferenced}} stub recently; because the article really desperately needs some citations, references, footnotes, to bring it to an encyclopedic standard, rather than the present 'fan site' sort of status. Can you oblige - can I help ? - I have many fond recollections of the Rugby League club I followed avidly from my earliest years (I am 52 and rising now) - but these are largely worthless in this place. Well done indeed on starting up the Cricket in England article!! It had been an absolutely glaring gap in our coverage of England-related topics.

Can I just point out another, perhaps even more startling gap: we still do not have a Sport in England article. It was myself who initiated the Sport in Scotland article (which still needs an awful lot of work on several minor sports - although the football, rugby, motorsport and cycling sections are pretty good). I think I modelled it on Sport in Australia, but there are probably several other decent templates out there. England has a very distinctive sporting culture and heritage, which is highly significant on a global scale, and we are absolutely spoilt for choice in terms of WP:CITE and WP:RS. I am not being a lazy b'stard: I am very willing to do it myself, and have intended to, but I am not very time-rich at the mo, due to a new woman in my life ;) Cheers, and all the best. --Mais oui! 07:30, 18 February 2007 (UTC)

It sounds like a class war in its current form, and unless you can provide references and state actual facts, simply asserting that the "gentry" who "ran the game" were "irritated" by the success of "working class" teams is highly spurious. In its current form it is not a fact, but a vague statement that may have some degree of truth in it, but is so vague it is actually quite damaging to the article. If you could refine the point, with references, then you could get it in. I've reverted it until you can:

1. Provide actual facts rather than a vague statement. 2. Provide suitable references.

Ok, so if you have a given fact, then put it in and reference it. Don't be vague though, as that doesn't help anyone. The way it is written sounds like all the gentry are in charge and they are all annoyed at working class success. Isn't this a bit of a generalisation? rugby union fork

I have converted Playing rugby union into a redirect. You had done this so badly that I though at first it was vandalism. The most important thing is that that the initial edit summary should have been something like "split off from rugby union article which is getting too big". This would have made it clear that your edit was intentional and would have preserved an audit trail to the dozens of people who had contributed to the article. You should also have deleted the text from rugby union.

I suggest you get at least one other person to agree to the split by a note in talk:Rugby union before you do the job properly. -- RHaworth 17:08, 6 May 2007 (UTC)

Perhaps if you had read the talk page then you would have seen that a) I had suggested the idea some time ago b) Nobody objected and one editor agreed that it was a good idea c) There is a note on the talk page following my edit d) There is also another one on the wikiproject page which the main editors belong to.
