Orphaned fair use image (Image:Blason Lyon.gif) edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Blason Lyon.gif. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Ok edit

First of all ...THIS: Olivier, User:R9tgokunks is on the rampage again. This time the target is the Strasbourg article where he made changes according to his very revisionist vision of history (according to him Strasbourg was not annexed by Germany in 1871, it was "ceded", and it wasn't restored to France in 1919, it was "annexed"). The attitude of this user is really annoying. He seems very displeased by the fact that Alsace is French, and he brings his POV in many Alsace related articles. He does the same in articles of Polish cities formerly German by the way. Can you have a look at the Strasbourg article? Thanks. Godefroy 13:05, 3 February 2007 (UTC) IS pretty much REALLY offensive to me and id like to thank you for being such a jackass behind my back to me, i should go around saying you are on the rampage and accuse you of editing articles that you havent edited in the past 2 weeks. Second... World War II edit

As the infobox controversy is currently being hashed out in an RFC, why don't you contribute to the discussion as opposed to unilaterally changing the box? I won't revert your inclusion of France (though I strenously disagree) for the time being, but I can't say the same for other editors. If you'd like to reply to this message, you can do so here, and I'll see it. Thanks. Parsecboy 15:06, 19 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

I agree with Parsecboy, unilaterlly changing the box while its status is under debate is in pretty poor taste. Couldn't that edit have waited until some sort of consensus from the RFC was reached? Demerphq 15:12, 19 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

I have left a comment on Talk:World War II. Godefroy 15:45, 19 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

With utmost respect, your comment is irrelevant when attempting to justify your edit. Given the RfC status of the infobox, you shouldn't have changed the list. I would ask you to please refrain from doing so in the future until the conclusion of the RfC, but do continue to contribute to the debate. Thank you. — Dorvaq (talk) 16:14, 19 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Dorvaq, lay off. You sound very angry. It was one edit. He was just trying to improve the article. Haber 18:14, 19 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Godefroy. I might not need to open up a grammar book as your edit comment on the 'France' talk page suggests. The more normal way would undoubtedly be 'Location of France on the European continent'. Nevertheless, it is also possible to state "Location of (something) at (place)", which is more general: Besides commonplace phrases like 'at home', "It is located at Bordeaux" may be in Bordeaux or allow for a margin near Bordeaux proper.
A continent is some solid ground one may walk 'on', but it is also a location, a geographical reference; 'the European continent' can be seen as a synonym for the placename 'Europe' (for which we would commonly say 'in Europe') or as the actual continental mainland, and here also we could say 'at Europe' if it need not be actually part of it.
I made the mistake of assuming Corsica, which is orange on the map, not to belong to Metropolitan France (and while editing I hadn't spotted the world map underneath either). But one might argue whether one should say that Corsica, hence 'Metropolitan France', is located 'on' the European continent. Just underneath 'European Union' it would be too ambiguous to simply use the term 'Europe' (which would allow the correct preposition 'in'). Especially since many users are a little allergic for EU matters, it is important to demonstrate the map not to locate a country just in the EU; such would clearly be too POV-pushing. Giving a geographical reference towards a continent as a generally known division of the world, while additionally showing a member-state's position in the EU is merely additional and relevant information. As there are several other places for which the map text would require another preposition, I still think the (admittedly a little peculiar) 'Location of ... at the European continent' is proper. But if no complaints about Corsica would arrive, the 'on' might as well stay in.
Perhaps one might say: on means 'above and touching', near means 'to the side or above or under, but not touching', at generally means 'to the side and possibly touching'. If one needs to express 'it is near, perhaps to the side but possibly on top, but it might be touching', then too at appears correct. — SomeHuman 26 Feb2007 22:30-22:44 (UTC)

La Réunion edit

Hi, sorry to contradict, but the article La is part of the name La Réunion and can't be taken off in french. Of course you may find maps with Réunion only, and even on the region flag Région Réunion, but you can also find maps in german with Schweiz even if the name is die Schweiz. I'm trying to find out some written evidences but I am sure of what I say. In fact, in typography, you should even always shift the L of La Réunion but it is not really respected all the time.Channer 19:03, 27 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

I checked on www.legifrance.gouv.fr, and it appears you're correct, but this full form with capital L is rarely used. I made changes accordingly in the article. Godefroy 20:08, 27 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Overseasfrancemap.png in France article edit

Hi Godefroy,

(The infobox is about the French Republic, not just Metropolitan France. Overseas France is an integral part of the French Republic.)

Just to let you know I've re-commented-out Overseasfrancemap.png in the infobox and also from the article's Geography section, as it is in need of some repair. I'd also hope a higher quality version might be available e.g. from the Commons. If you're able to repair and re-upload it, great; better still, though, would be a higher quality map. Henry IV edit

Will you please restrain yourself from adding that long prose about the Bourbon-Bussets to Henry IV of France. It is PoV to say that 'the Bourbon-Bussets should have inherited' - their legitimacy is severely doubted, due to conflicting opinions over whether a King can or cannot dissolve a marriage, and due to uncertainty over whether they derived from a marriage at all. And it is irrelevant to Henry's article - they did not contest it, it was a non-issue, and it is irrelevant to state that it was Charles de Gaulle's opinion that they should have succeeded Henry III. Furthermore, it is directly copied from Bourbon Busset as it was at the time of copying. Michael Sanders 01:38, 12 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Economy of the EU edit

I'm not going to revert your edit again; I'm going to appeal to your common sense as a Wikipedian!

It clearly mentions in the article discrepancies and anomalies with the NUTS regions:

"Comparing the richest areas of the EU can be a difficult task. This is because the NUTS 1 & 2 regions are not homogenous, some of them being very large regions, such as NUTS-1 Hesse (21,100 km²) or NUTS-1 Île-de-France (12,011 km²), whilst other NUTS regions are much smaller, for example NUTS-1 Hamburg (755 km²) or NUTS-1 Greater London (1,580 km²)."

"The NUTS Regulation lays down a minimum population size of 3 million and a maximum size of 7 million for the average NUTS-1 region, whereas a minimum of 800.000 and a maximum of 3 million for NUTS-2 regions ¹ [9]. This definition, however, is not respected by Eurostat. E.g.: the région of Île-de-France, with 11.3 million inhabitants, is treated as a NUTS-2 region, while the state of Bremen, with only 662,000 inhabitants, is treated as a NUTS-1 region."

This explains (in terms quite clear) that NUTS regions can be difficult to compare, and there is also a link to a list of NUTS-1,-2 and -3 regions. The article looks messy enough as it is without wanton caveats to stroke national egos!

However, like I said, if you wanted to compile a table for NUTS-3 regions, I think that would be a really interesting and useful addition to the article. (I would help, but I can't seem to get the link you provided to work. Any idea why not?)

Île-de-France edit

I'm not sure that the Fleur-de-Lys is that inappropriate for {{IledeFrance-geo-stub‎}} - after all it is quite clearly shown on fr:Île-de-France and fr:Portail:Île-de-France. In fact, it appears to the be traditional heraldic flag of the region, even though it is obsolete as a royal flag (see commons:Regions of France). What about the image shown next to this comment? I still think this or the rectangular fleur-de-lys is preferable over the trendy corporate logo.

License tagging for Image:Pouembout.PNG edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Pouembout.PNG. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

Fair use rationale for Image:125px-Aquitaine logo.png edit

Thanks for uploading Image:125px-Aquitaine logo.png. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. Unspecified source for Image:125px-Aquitaine logo.png edit

Thanks for uploading Image:125px-Aquitaine logo.png. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self-no-disclaimers}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Hi, I understand why you would think Lagos is much like NY as in the city is different from the state. However this is not the case. Lagos is the only city-state in Nigeria meaning that the whole state is a city divided into districts such as VI, Ikoyi, Lagos, Ikeja etc. This is not the case for other city's such as Abuja which is in FCT and is entirely seperate from the territory. That's the reason why the city flag is the state's flag and so on. I hope you understand. Lephilippe 21:36, 1 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Alsatian edit

Hi Godefroy,

I see you've added several Alsatian pronunciations. Could I ask why you transcribe simple stops with a voiced letter and a voiceless diacritic? Do you mean they are articulated as voiced stops, but without vocal vibration, or that they're voiced but only for part of their duration? Or is the Alsatian distinction one of aspiration, and transcribing with voiced stops is interference from the orthography? Something like that appears to be the case in other languages where I've seen this transcription. Thanks, kwami (talk) 21:47, 12 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Would you mind going through the pages that link to Alsatian for their pronunciation, so that they're consistent? A lot of them just have just [t] or [d]. I'll add what's going on to the Alsatian article, so that our readers have some idea what's up. kwami (talk) 21:22, 13 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

In a nutshel, French overseas departments and territories are integral parts of France, included in French statistics by the French statistical office, and people living in the overseas departments and territories vote in French elections and are represented in the French parliament, whereas British overseas territories, Greenland and Puerto Rico are not integral parts of the the UK, Denmark and the US, their residents do not vote in British, Danish and US elections and are not represented in their parliaments. Brussels edit

Dear Godefroy, there is an ongoing discussion on the Brussels article between alphabetical ordering of languages, French first because it is the most spoken language, or Dutch first because it is the original language of the city. I want to inform you that several people are making edits back and forth. Personally, I think consensus must be reached before altering any order...PhiRho (talk) 19:36, 30 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

And where is this discussion taking place? As for the discussion itself, it is rather absurd to list a language fist just because it was the original language of a place. If we do that, then the Cologne article should list Colonia first, and Köln only second, since Latin was the original language of Cologne before German. And the Marseille article should list Masilia first since Greek was the original language of the city long before French and Occitan. This is rather ridiculous. Godefroy (talk) 20:06, 30 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
See discussion on talk page of Brussels. Note that I do NOT advance the position "to list a language fist just because it was the original language of a place". But I do not understand why several people during the last days absolutely want to list French first. I want to repeat your own wordings: "please do not bring the Belgian linguistic issue to the en Wiki".PhiRho (talk) 21:36, 30 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
Why do you assume that I do not consider your edits in good faith? I also explained why I revert the edits: to keep the page in the same state as long as the discussion is not settled.PhiRho (talk) 21:44, 30 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Wy-dit-Joli-Village edit

If you get around to it, this article could use one of your superb maps. :-) Carlossuarez46 (talk) 01:06, 2 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

The thing is, Wy-dit-Joli-Village lies outside of the map I made (map on the right), so I can't add it. By the way, you could add the etymology of the village's name (allegedly King Henry IV said "what a pretty village" when passing through it, and villagers kept the king's words). Montreal edit edit

With respect to this edit, do you have some specific demographics to indicate we need to qualify this, Lagos, Port-au-Prince or some such alternative? Franamax (talk) 04:23, 7 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Stop spamming the population page! The German population stands at 82,258,000 as of September 30th. The 82,21 million number IS JUST AN ESTIMATE!! Get it!? The German population didn't decline with 48 000 in just three months, even you should understand that! And by the way, ONLY the french departments are integral parts of France! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.202.181.59 (talk) 09:58, 26 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

I have tagged Image:Blason_Lyon.png as {{no rationale}}, because it does not provide a fair use rationale. If you believe the image to be acceptable for fair use according to Wikipedia policy, please provide a rationale explaining as much, in accordance with the fair use rationale guideline, on the image description page. Some examples can be found at Wikipedia:Use rationale examples. Please also consider using {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags/Non-free. Thank you. Infobox French commune edit

Hi, I'm not quite sure what you tried to achieve with your edit, but as far as I can see the only result is that articles that don't have the field "nomcommune" or "name" specified, do not get a top row in the infobox with their name in it. Is that what you wanted? If not, let me know, maybe I can help. I'll revert your edit for now, because I don't see the advantage of it. Markussep Talk 15:23, 21 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

It screws French city infoboxes which already have "Ville de xxx" on top, by adding an extra unwanted line "Commune of xxx". As far as I can tell all the French communes infoboxes have name or nomcommune in them, so I don't see why adding "Commune of PAGENAME" which screws the French city infoboxes. Godefroy (talk) 21:15, 21 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
OK, now I know what you mean. I don't think all articles that use "French commune" have a field "name" or "nomcommune", but it's not so difficult to check that. I hadn't encountered any "Ville de" infoboxes so far, but now I see Paris, Lyon, Metz and Marseille have that, using the "native_name" field. I don't think that field is meant for this purpose, I think (as the name of the field implies) it should be used for places with a different name in English (e.g. Dunkirk). Actually, I don't like the "commune of" and "ville de" part, the plain name should be enough. But that's not my first priority. Markussep Talk 22:23, 21 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Alsatian lenes edit

Hi Godefroy

At User talk:Kwamikagami#Alsatian lenes, I've asked Kwamikagami where he got his interesting remarks on voice (phonetics) – and on Alsatian language – that in the phonation of the Alsatian stops, "[t]he vocal cords are positioned as for voicing, but do not actually vibrate". That is a new and interesting hypothesis to me, so I asked him for the sources. He said he got it from you, but he didn't remember where. I'd be glad if you could point me to your sources. -- machᵗᵃˡᵏ 18:20, 24 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
