Kepler vs. KOI

edit

I don't fully understand the mechanics behind how the planets are named. However, to the best of my knowledge, I can say that those named "Kepler-XX" are confirmed by the actual Kepler science team, and those named "KOI-XXX" were most likely confirmed independently by non-Kepler staff. Additionally, all of the Kepler candidates are designated as "KOI"s, which in itself stands for Kepler Objects of Interest; after confirmation, their names may or may not be changed. Hopefully that helps!

Except for the first few planets, being TrES-2 (Kepler-1b), HAT-P-7b (Kepler-2b) and HAT-P-11b (Kepler-3b), the other non-Kepler-named planets don't officially have the "Kepler" designation (KOI-423b isn't actually Kepler-13b, but I filled it in because it appeared to me that the discovery of that planet implied that KOI-423 filled in for a spot that would have been taken if the Kepler team confirmed the planet). I can't find sourcings for these things anywhere, and with the confirmation of Kepler-12b (which I originally thought was KOI-428b), I think I am going to remove the alternate naming system altogether --Starstriker7(Talk) 23:51, 11 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thanks very much. I was actually drawn to the same conclusion as you have been. When Kepler-12 turned out to be not KOI-428 my curiosity arose. Maybe things will be clarified in the future. Thanks. GoJoe (talk) 07:45, 12 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
Hopefully so. And hopefully I can stop myself from jumping to such conclusions. :P --Starstriker7(Talk) 01:51, 13 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
