Re: Adminship

edit

No, I'm not ignoring you--I promise! Anyway, I've looked over your contribs, and I have to say that you're quite a balanced and experienced editor with excellent use of edit summaries! (Stats copied below). My experiences interacting with you have always been quite positive, and I think you're a pretty level-headed, friendly guy. So in short, yes, I think now would be a good time for you to give it a try, and, while everyone certainly has faults, I can't find many here. All of that said, I will give you my very strong support (or hell, I might even nominate you =D) under one condition: Get rid of that damned "You have new messages" thing on your talk page!!!! Other than that, you have my full support. AmiDaniel (talk) 08:24, 11 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Never thought you were ignoring me for a second. Thank you for your comments! Am a wee bit disappointed my edit summary usage wasn't 100% tho! (must be from when I first opened the account lol) But I am a little confused,m what "you have new messages thing"?
Woa ... where'd your new messages thing go? From looking at the history, it wasn't there when I left that message, so now I'm rather embarassed. I know exactly where you're coming from with the whole edit summary thing ... I swear I never forget to leave edit summaries, but in my early days ... grrr... Anyway, good luck, and I'll see if I have the time to nominate you ;). AmiDaniel (talk) 09:52, 11 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Two things

edit

Hi Glen. Two things:

  1. I noticed your posts on User talk:Bizkit 21 2002 regarding the images of magazine covers, and also that you have uploaded a number of them yourself. Please be aware our fair use policy does not allow the use of magazine covers unless they are part of critical commentary about the magazine itself; that is, they can not be used simply for identification of the person on the cover.
  2. When I came here, I saw that you're a VandalProof moderator. I was considering listing User:CynicalMe as an abuser earlier today, decided instead to continue pointing-out the problems and requesting changes in their editing pattern. About half of their VP edits are inappropriate, even after complaints yesterday, but the user is well-intentioned and may eventually improve. I don't know how tight you guys keep the reins on the tool, though, so if you could take a quick look at my and others' posts on User talk:CynicalMe from the 16th, 17th, and 18th UTC, I'd appreciate it.

Best regards. ×Meegs 12:29, 18 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the double heads up re the above. My word, now I am aware it seems there are prob tens of thousands of articles that breach fair use copyright! What is the best course of action to your mind? Is it serious enough that I should act when happening upon each one or could the interpretation of the law be read in more than one way? Regardless thank you for letting me know. Re Cynicalme, yes you def have a point. I have made our position clear (yet fairly I believe) on his talk page - I "gulp" (is "doubt" the word I'm best to use here?) we will have probs now, but will keep a close eye (let me know of course if you see more use in this manner). I thank you again, - Glen Stollery 13:24, 18 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
It is a huge problem, especially under the {{promotional}} tag. When you come across a copyrighted image that is outside of fair use, there are lots of options: bring it to WP:CP, bring it to WP:PUI, tag it {{nld}}, tag it {{nrd}}, or simply remove it from the article with an educational edit summary and tag it {{orfud}}. There's also {{Fair use disputed}}, though the template, by itself, doesn't do anything but start a conversation. Depending on the case, some of these processes can be more appropriate than others. For magazine covers, which have been debated to death, orphaning is pretty reasonable.
Thanks for providing another voice on the VandalProof matter. I'm just curious, does inclusion on the list User talk:AmiDaniel/VandalProof itself enable a user to use VP, as Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/CheckPage does for AWB, or is the authentication done somewhere else? (replying here alone is ok) Take care. ×Meegs 14:16, 18 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
Wow, re Fair use: learn something new everyday... Re: VP, inclusion on that list, or more specifically the one at User:AmiDaniel/Welcome to VandalProof is all that's required as the software checks that page when logging in. Anyone who edits those pages will be reverted almost immediately as the mods software reverts automatically. Shed some light? :) - Glen Stollery 14:45, 18 June 2006 (UTC) PS: Just approving you for use now if ya wanna have a snoop?Reply

edit

Thought you'd get a kick out of another spammer over on the Talk:Creatine page. He's moved on to personally attacking me because I removed the links and unverifiable statements about his own company. He's also questioning your inclusion of Phosphagen and my Cell-Tech sentence. Your opinion could help diffuse the situation. I've been pretty civil so far, citing the policies, but perhaps another warning might be in order and he seems to think I'm out to get him. Cheers. Yankees76 13:41, 19 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Vandalproof problem

edit

Vandalproof seems to have developped a problem - every single recent change I look at comes up with a message "Admin has recieved no vandalism warnings" (where you would normally see user warnings) and all the page titles are followed by a question mark (in the RC changes part on the left hand side) Here is a screen dump of the problem: click. As you can see, the problem applies to both logged in an ip users... Any ideas? Viridae 04:49, 20 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

I just had a look atlogin page more closely and relaised that the problem is probobly known. If the one described is the same as what I am describing - don't worry about it. Viridae 05:04, 20 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hello again! I installed VandalProof 1.2, but I cannot log in at all. I'm sure it's something I'm "not doing right" but any suggestions are welcome! The app says its "Retrieving user list. Please wait..."
In the main panel of VP it doesn't give me any clues - just a "The page cannot be displayed" message.
Tips would be ever so helpful! It's probably something obvious, thanks for all your help. Celardore 01:59, 1 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hello again, I've various things to get VandalProof to work. I cleared my mononook.js, which only had Lupins popup script in it. I switched to IE and logged in to WP. I don't know what to do next. It still just says "Retrieving user list. Please wait..." Would it be worth creating a new account and registering that for VandalProof? Thanks. Celardore 13:12, 1 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hello yet again! Any suggestions for getting VP to work are welcome, as I have yet to even see what it can do. I cleared my cookies in IE, lowered the privacy settings, removed my monobook.js stuff, removed the firewall on my router, un&reinstalled VP... No joy =( If you're stuck for ideas I'll probably head over to the VP bugs page. Thanks for your help. CelardoreTalk 22:53, 2 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

I am not sure why you tagged a piece of blue sky as npov. every single sentence in the entire article states a fact (and most are sourced) except for that last bit, explaining the title, which as added by an anon ip (and frankly should be reverted). It would be most helpful if you could explain such actions on the talk page so other users can fix the problems if they do indeed exist. - Abscissa 11:53, 2 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Becoming a Mediation Cabal Mediator

edit

Responding to the question on my talkpage:

Joining Mediation Cabal is rather a lot like joining a WikiProject: It can be as simple as selecting a case and saying, "I'd like to mediate this case" on the page. If you'd like to have your name added to the list of current mediators, you can do so yourself or just say the word and I'll do it for you, no problem!

As far as case selection, I've noticed that the best results tend to be from those mediators who are more interested in the mediation aspect than the specifics of the case: If you're an astronomer, for instance, it'd be best to stay away from astronomy cases that way personal biases don't come into play. We've got a number of thought-provoking links and information under Wikipedia:Mediation Cabal/Suggestions for mediators also, and a visit or two to mediate.com can never hurt, right?

Hope that helps, and if you have any other questions, please feel free to ask! ~Kylu (u|t) 16:15, 18 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

My VandalProof Application

edit

Dear Glen

You recently turned down my application to use VandalProof due to me having less than 250 mainspace edits. I understand the need for such precautions, however I was wondering if a flaw in the guideline had ever been considered. I have spent, and intend to continue spending, a reasonable amount of time on wiki as a newpage patroller, and as such many of my mainspace edits have been to add deletion requests which have subsequently caused the article to be deleted. This obviously means that I have made more mainspace edits than show up on the edit counters, and my mainspace edit count rises more slowly. Has this been taken into consideration when determining the guideline?

I don't expect my application to be reconsidered as a result of this comment. I shall reapply in a few days once I've spent a few more hours sorting stubs. Jibbles | Talk 19:34, 21 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

VandalProof issues

edit

Hi Glen, thanks for adding me to the list of apporved VP users, unfortuantely I seem to be having issues installing it. It keeps asking me for a toobox.msi file which I don't seem to have, and after I've hit cancel a few times, the software loads abut I can't seem to do anything in it. It asks me to log on and whatnot but then it tells me I haven't successfully logged on even though it recognizes me... of course this is all after having installed 1.2.2. Anyhow, any help would be appreciated, otherwise, I'll just go back to reverting the old way. Thanks. --Blahm 16:09, 22 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Unfortunately no luck getting it work. Not a big deal, I'll do it 'the long way.' --Blahm 18:04, 23 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

I apologize

edit

For falsely accusing you. I know it was not really a public accusation, but I feel badly and feel inclined to make a public apology. You were doing your best to help and I returned kindness with hostility. I sincerely apologize. Named user 03:21, 23 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'll reply here so discussion remains on this page :)
No apology needed my friend, you had every right to feel that way, and again I apologise to you for any undue stress. Thank you for seeing my misguided but well intentioned attempt to prevent any stress for you involving similar future incidents - without realising the stress I caused at the time. I appreciate your kind words, and thank you for being so understanding. - Glen 03:38, 23 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Glen,

As I understand it, you are the person responsible for giving vandal proof to garfield226.

garfield is misusing this facility and I would appreciate it if he/she was further trained in its reasonable (non-overzealous) use. I am not a vandal!

Well my news isn't good I'm afraid. I'll reply on your talk page - Glen 09:57, 23 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thankyou for inviting me to join the bodybuilding thing, but I don't really consider myself a bodybuilder, and I don't really know much about it. Thanks anyway though! Jamandell (d69) 16:07, 23 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi Glen

I noticed you are from Auckland. I know a psychology professor at the university there [3]. He's done a lot of research on psychology and he's very approachable, so if you wanted a second opinion or more lit on something psych, just drop him an email. He's really helpful. I've some of his material myself, so I can send you something also if you like. Its really interesting stuff if you are into psychology. Savoylettuce 06:39, 24 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi again. Further to this, I understand you have knowledge of muscle building. Well, I have done a lot of research into the psychology side of this. It relates also to general learning, and even cognitive abilities. The research has shown that among all the so called psychological techniques (new age brain balancing, meditation, etc), mental rehearsal stands out as the only one that really works. From my own research, it can be done still or moving (no weights or undue exersions tho). Using a daily standing stretch (eyes closed) it is possible to mimic weight training and to stimulate the muscle strength and growth (weight training nearly always involves a natural stretch in a rep). Stretching movements that mimic lifting are great already, but when you add the synergetic effects of imagining pushing or pulling and balancing, you train both the nervous system and coordination to help lift weights in the gym. Anyway, I'm going to collect some research on this aspect of training. If you have any suggestions on where it may be appropriate on Wikipedia, just drop me an email or post here. How dare you threaten me

edit

First of all, considering you make a living selling snake oil, you are the last one to mouth off. To your credit, I will say that the All Blacks kick some serious ass. Secondly, I happen to orginate from CT, and loath Republican Lieberman. Most importantly, the "five second frencher" comment was really funny, and I was hoping it would stay up long enough for some friends to see it. I'll stick to fark.com to get my jollies, please take care of NZ so I can move there after the Koreans nuke us and we turn them into a glass parking lot. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 83.46.8.250 (talkcontribs) .

Wikipedia Research Survey Request

edit

Hello, I am a member of a research group at Palo Alto Research Center (formerly known as Xerox PARC) studying how conflicts occur and resolve on Wikipedia. Due to your experience in conflict resolution on Wikipedia (e.g., as a member of the Mediation Cabal) we’re extremely interested in your insights on this topic. We have a survey at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=400792384029 which we are inviting a few selected Wikipedians to participate in, and we would be extremely appreciative if you would take the time to complete it. As a token of our gratitude, we would like to present you with a PARC research star upon completion. Thank you for your time.

Re: Brittney Skye article

As far as I am aware the link was not intended as a vehicle for advertising, and was more given as a way to find out more information from a viewpoint that is inside the adult industry rather than the stub that is currently in place. As recommended by you I have put this on the discussion page of the article and I am also currently working on fleshing out the article further. --Steve355 16:42, 28 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Regarding my VandalProof rejection

edit

I find it strange that you rejected me based on the recent changes and time that I have been with wiki.

I have over 388 main page edits [[4]] and did my first edit last year and have been had most of my activity since June and added a few images to wiki commons. It doesn't stress me out or anything just seemed like a bulk copy paste rejection.

Cheers
