Please stop changing the name edit

Please stop changing the name from Orissa to Odisha and Oriya to Odia. Wikipedia uses WP:COMMONNAME as a guideline and your edits are in contravention. —SpacemanSpiff 14:59, 18 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

The name has been recently changed in the Parliament. And it is changed because people of Odisha do not pronounce it in its old form and generally use it in the new form.
I don't think that is inconsistent with any common name code.
The names which used to be popularly called Bombay, Madras, Calcutta have been changed as per the local conventions and the new names are the common form of usage now.
Hence the request, please give it a rest.

You're the one that needs to give it a rest, please stop changing this, it's not per our policies and guidelines. Please do not engage in further disruptive editing. —SpacemanSpiff 12:55, 19 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
Kquester the WP:COMMONNAME is about the English usage. (since this is en wiki). The other examples you have cited - Bombay, Madras etc, have been renamed for quite sometime now and the English language sources have started using the new names. In case of Odisha too they will, but it will take a few years for it to make it into majority usage. Till then Orissa remains the Commonname per "English source" usage. (I know this policy is weird - but it is the policy followed)--Sodabottle (talk) 13:16, 19 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
So do you suggest, that Wikipedia waits with outdated information till the use of the name Odisha becomes a major usage? And what yardstick decides whether the usage is "major" or not? The above major cities are constantly in National news, hence you can make out the difference. It may not be apparent in case of Odisha. On the other hand, the usage of the new spelling can be seen if one checks out the major "English publications" in the state, be it the newspapers, magazines, books or the agencies.
