User:Gerryan edit

Hey Gerryan, and welcome to Wikipedia! Check out the welcome page and the new contributors' help page if you need any tips or guidance on how to establish yourself as a Wikipedia editor. I would also like to point out that your userpage name is case-sensitive: if you create your page at User:GerRyan, as you have, then it will not be linked to your user account. I have moved the page to User:Gerryan for this reason. If you have any troubles or queries, don't hesitate to get in touch. and remember to always sign your posts on talk pages by using four tildes (~~~~). Thanks, I'm hoping this is what you mean! Gerryan (talk) 13:45, 30 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

External links in Galway Hooker edit

Re Galway hooker page. To be honest, I don't think your website adds a lot to the work, other than a collection of photos. Perhaps adding a few decent pictures to the article might be better. But I've had another look at your site and as it seems to be a hobby site more than a commercial one, I won't remove the link again. Others might object and you'll have to take it up with them.--Dmol (talk) 15:18, 1 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

I suppose those who remove the link would do so under WP:ELNO or WP:ADVERT. While I wouldn't personally take umbrage to the link's inclusion, what you might want to do instead is upload a select few to Wikimedia Commons and create a Galway Hooker category there, and include a smaller version of one of the best images in the article itself. You can then attribute the images to yourself and your gallery in the image description. Hope that helps! haz (talk) 20:24, 1 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Ok guys thanks, I think I am getting an understanding of the procedure here. Pictures of the Galway Hooker will add to the viewers experience in understanding this beautiful boat; I will upload pics to Wiki commons as recommended. Thanks for your patience and advice, Ger. Ger, have a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Shop_Street%2C_Galway.jpg as an example of what you have to do. The ideal licence is GFDL and creator is "self". NB that by uploading it you are putting it in the public domain and relinquishing all copyright. You are saying that anybody anywhere can (and will!) use it without any reference to you. So maybe you don't want to load anything that might be commercial (or perhaps limit the resolution). Somebody might look at who uploaded it and contact you to buy more! --Red King (talk) 23:46, 1 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

That has given me something to think about! Normally I would submit pictures free of charge to accompany articles that promote upcoming festivals such as Cruinniu na mBad festival in Kinvara - "A picture tells a thousand words!", but this would be a restricted license for that article in that publication only. I will select some pictures to put into the Galway Hooker page because it seems to me badly needed but at least now I will be aware I will be giving these into public domain, which is ok.
