DRDO AURA

I understand that you think Livefist Defence is not a credible source. You reverted my changes based on this fact. I would like to point out that the articles were written by defence analyst Shiv Aroor. He is reputable and the same wiki page uses other articles of his for references. Thus I think the articles can be considered as a decent source (it quotes an India Today article written by Shiv Aroor). I request you to revert the revert, and bring back my changes. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Uknown-gryphus (talkcontribs) 04:20, 15 April 2019 (UTC)

Uknown-gryphus, it's not just my decision. There have been several discussions on the topic and they have concluded that Livefist cannot be considered a reliable source. Being a one-man operation, it would be considered a self-published source. Additionally, its standard of fact checking is unknown. —Gazoth (talk) 04:42, 15 April 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply. Could you please link to some of these discussions? I understand why it would be considered a self-published source. However, many ex military and other defence service men have written articles. Quote from the site : "While Livefist is currently entirely the work of Shiv Aroor, well-known commentators who have contributed columns to Livefist over the years include Dr Ashley J Tellis of the Carnegie Endowment, and Admiral (Retd) Arun Prakash, former chief of the Indian Navy, serving and retired officers of the Indian armed forces". Also the articles I linked to in the wiki seem to be reliable. We can make individual exceptions right? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Uknown-gryphus (talkcontribs) 05:20, 18 April 2019 (UTC)

Brahmos missile

My issue is regarding calling Brahmos as the fastest cruise missile in the world. The reference given along with it also mentions that Brahmos is the fastest supersonic cruise missile in the world. And as there are hypersonic cruise missiles too (like 3M22 Zircon by Russia) then how can the Brahmos become the fastest cruise missile in the world. Also regarding the flight ceiling, it is mentioned as 15 km on official website of Brahmos i.e. Brahmos Aerospace[1]Ketan rana123 (talk) 16:29, 8 May 2019 (UTC)

References

@Ketan rana123: If Zircon has been tested and proven to be hypersonic, then I don't think there is any point in calling BrahMos the fastest, even with qualifiers. Fill in the edit summary to explain the reasoning when you're changing content without modifying references. Changing of numbers without adding or changing references will be easily mistaken as vandalism. I have reverted the page back to your version. —Gazoth (talk) 17:27, 8 May 2019 (UTC)

Timeless Newsletter • Issue 4

Newsletter • April 2019

Welcome to the fourth issue of the Timeless newsletter, with a cat! Or maybe not.

Un chat qui miaule???

It's true! The angry cat, a fundamental part of Timeless, has resulted in confusion and bug reports all across the projects and phabricator. And now it shall be immortalised forever in the new, shiny Timeless logo.

Updates:

After putting off the project for three months because I got hit in the head with a flight of stairs, and then putting off the project for another two months while working out what the status of the grant was, I have now put off the project even more in order to focus on my other project for a bit. So progress lately has been a bit whims-based as a result:

Radar:

  • The French Wiktionary voted to set Timeless as their default skin, with results possibly as you might expect: I ran away and hid, and the WMF said no. A bit of discussion later and we largely agreed that all else aside, this is a bit of a branding issue, but we love the enthusiasm! Also the bug reports that inevitably come out of such a discussion. I'm still working on properly going through those.
  • Theme support is still stuck in limbo, but now we have another skinning RfC. tl;dr, we wanna replace the entire skinning system, and Skizzerz'll write a prototype later.

I will be fully resuming work on Timeless next week, or maybe the week after, depending on what madness (or illness) comes out of the Hackathon in Prague. Please come talk to me there to discuss strategy!

Arihant-class submarine

(Undid revision 874220562 by Niz1vir (talk) Nonsensical reason for removal, other countries use dollars too, US$ denotes a particular currency)

The above reflects your limited understanding of the english language. I revised it for a reason that has nothing to do with your understanding, so you think it is nonsensical. The original, before my revision, read as if India built the submarine using US dollars only, as if India uses US dollars, which it does not, get it? The current version is correct, India uses rupees. All the best, buddy. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Niz1vir (talkcontribs) 22:13, 22 May 2019 (UTC)

Niz1vir, this is another wild interpretation that no reasonable person would subscribe to. It is just as nonsensical as the other explanation provided in your edit summary. We provide numbers that are present in reliable sources, with conversions if it doesn't violate WP:OR. Read MOS:CURRENCY for further details. —Gazoth (talk) 22:39, 22 May 2019 (UTC)

Results of the 2019 Indian general election

Hi Gazoth,Please remove sections from Results of the 2019 Indian general election in a future update in the Template:Indian general election results, 2019. 112.133.248.16 (talk) 10:53, 30 May 2019 (UTC)

Please stop edit warring and discuss your dispute on the talk page. —Gazoth (talk) 15:54, 30 May 2019 (UTC)

On Pondicherry-related pages.

Hi, I noticed you're constantly removing French names that are well sourced, official and popular among the local people. I want you to know that Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu can't be added because of WP:INDICSCRIPT, not because of "priority". However, French is Latin script, not Indic, so can be added. There is already phonetic transcription, so no IAST is required either. If you have an issue with this, please let me know.-- friendlyneighborhoodanon 18:55, 9 June 2019 (UTC)

@Anonymousboii: WP:NPOV requires a balance to be maintained by avoiding undue weight to any particular aspect. Mentioning only a French transcription, without mentioning the transcriptions in other, more commonly spoken official languages, disrupts the balance. The next time you've been reverted, discuss the matter first before reverting again, per WP:BRD. Also, you need to fix your signature to make it easy to identify your username, preferably by linking your user page, and you need to link your talk page per WP:CUSTOMSIG. —Gazoth (talk) 19:06, 9 June 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for the reminder on the signature. Either way, NPOV doesn't say anything about language though. The reason you were reverted was because the summary you provided wasn't good enough or very vague/WP:OR, as you supressed cited information. The easiest compensation for this typically would be to add IAST, but the page already has phonetic pronunciation. It is better to raise this issue with the Wikipedia higher ups, since it's a technical issue/guideline loophole. ✘ anonymousвهii 19:26, 9 June 2019 (UTC)
Anonymousboii, WP:NPOV doesn't have to explicitly talk about every topic that it applies to. There are no "higher ups" in Wikipedia, even editors with advanced permissions have the same say as anyone else. If you want a wider discussion, we could take this to WT:INB, but you need to make an attempt to discuss this first. Addition of IAST has already been discussed before, and it is seen as sidestepping MOS:IS. I am quite sure that your edits will be seen the same way too, especially as French doesn't seem to be declared as an official language by Puducherry.
If my edit summary for reverting your edit is not clear to you, you should have initiated a discussion on the talk page. Edit warring while simultaneously calling my first revert as edit warring is not acting in good faith. Calling my edit "useless" doesn't help either. —Gazoth (talk) 19:28, 9 June 2019 (UTC)
I agree that French is not explicitly stated as an official language. But if the Government of India has been using it on Pondicherry-related documents since the 50s, it sure is relevant, maybe as an additional/cultural language, which is why I removed it from the official section. I called your edits "useless" because you didn't create any consensus at the time, and shadow edited instead of a rollback/revert, a common form of vandalism. And by "higher ups", I meant going to template pages, discussing with expert editors and raising issues there. Even according to the naming section in WP:NPOV, I didn't add the French name/common name in such a way to obstruct the official_name, instead adding them in parentheses/other_name section. ✘ anonymousвهii 19:35, 9 June 2019 (UTC)
Anonymousboii, "additional language" or "additional official languages" has a specific meaning in Indian context. It is specifically meant for languages declared to be an official language is certain sub-territories, but not the entire state/union territory as a whole. It is not meant for languages that haven't been declared as official. Your determination that usage of French in certain official documents accords it the status of an official language is original research.
Coming back to the original topic under discussion, the inclusion of French in the lead violates the spirit, if not the letter of MOS:IS. The policy became necessary as there were multiple official languages that could qualify for the lead, due to which verifiability and criteria for inclusion became a problem. While the policy was written down as excluding Indic scripts, that doesn't mean that quasi-official non-Indic scripts are acceptable for the lead. —Gazoth (talk) 19:49, 9 June 2019 (UTC)
Anonymousboii, regarding the ninja edit, my concern wasn't that the official name was being obstructed. It was that usage of French in the lead would give it an undue amount of importance over Tamil (an official language of Puducherry), Malayalam and Telugu (both additional official languages). —Gazoth (talk) 19:55, 9 June 2019 (UTC)
Just in case you have any confusion, I'm using this official Government of India document - http://gstcouncil.gov.in/sites/default/files/sgst-notification/PUD-(R)-21.pdf - which clearly has French in it. Here are some more documents: https://gst.py.gov.in/ctd/gst/THE-PUDUCHERRY-GOODS-AND-SERVICES-TAX-(AMENDMENT)-ACT-2018.pdf, https://labour.py.gov.in/sites/default/files/2017/The%20Puducherry%20Loading%20and%20Unloading%20(Regulation%20of%20Employment%20and%20Welfare)%20Act,%202017.pdf and https://lad.py.gov.in/images/pdf/GO/Profession%20Tax%20for%20panchayat%20Act%20No.%204.pdf. There is no way that French being used in official capacity is Original Research. I will add these to the Puducherry and Pondicherry talk pages as well. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Anonymousboii (talkcontribs) 19:58, 9 June 2019 (UTC)
@Anonymousboii: Reaching a conclusion that is not explicitly stated by the source is WP:OR. —Gazoth (talk) 20:02, 9 June 2019 (UTC)
You don't see the highly visible, bold French?✘ anonymousвهii 20:06, 9 June 2019 (UTC)
@Anonymousboii: I do, which is why I called it quasi-official in my earlier comment. It still does not explicitly state that French is an official language. Anyway, this is tangential to the point I was making. Even if French was an official language, my argument would still hold. —Gazoth (talk) 20:08, 9 June 2019 (UTC)

Timeless Newsletter • Issue 5

Newsletter • August 2019

Welcome to the fifth and final issue of the Timeless newsletter!

Progress was made. True story.

I am happy to announce that after about a year, this delightful project in which absolutely nothing has gone according to plan is coming to a close. Or at least, the grant-funded portion is. Which means we will now be resuming our regular schedule of random whims-based development, you probably won't notice any difference whatsoever unless you use MonoBook, and there's a report.

What's new from the past two months:

A lot less than we'd hoped, frankly. We:

We also wound up with:

  • Patches resulting in RelatedArticles working in MonoBook, and FlaggedRevisions showing up in Minerva, unless someone actually managed to turn that off as well. (Blame T181242.) It's possible we went a little overboard with the whole 'let's close all the tasks!' sprint.
  • An unfortunate repeated discovery that themes (the Night/Winter variants I keep insisting will happen at some point) are still pretty far off on the horizon. Um.
  • Possibly a quite a few more bugs coming your way. This month, and especially the past week, have been a bit of a mess, development-wise. While hopefully none of the worse issues make it to production, please keep the reports coming for whatever you do find and we'll get it fixed as soon as we can. Y'all've been amazing about this, and it's really appreciated.

And I guess that's that. I'm really bad at reporting, and this is a report. For the purposes of the grant, this was a requirement, but do you want me to keep trying to send these out?

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at the English Wikipedia.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!
