Your request for rollback
editHi Gavin.perch. After reviewing your request for rollback, I have enabled rollback on your account. Keep in mind these things when going to use rollback:
- Getting rollback is no more momentous than installing Twinkle.
- Rollback should be used to revert clear cases of vandalism only, and not good faith edits.
- Rollback should never be used to edit war.
- If abused, rollback rights can be revoked.
- Use common sense.
If you no longer want rollback, contact me and I'll remove it. Also, for some more information on how to use rollback, see Wikipedia:New admin school/Rollback (even though you're not an admin). I'm sure you'll do great with rollback, but feel free to leave me a message on my talk page if you run into troubles or have any questions about appropriate/inappropriate use of rollback. Thank you for helping to reduce vandalism. Happy editing! FASTILY (TALK) 07:45, 9 June 2011 (UTC)

editYou posted to this editor today, just thought I'd tell you that despite an agreement in April about the name of the page, without any discussion he moved it to a different name. I've reverted him. I'm not complaining to you, just letting you know. Dougweller (talk) 08:24, 9 June 2011 (UTC)
Re Signature
editHello, If you were offended by my comment, I apologize. I meant that entirely in good humor, but, now I read it over, it may have been not that obvious. By all means, you can use my signature (although I disapprove on your creativity there :P) if you want. --The Σ talkcontribs 18:04, 9 June 2011 (UTC)
A revert that you made
editHi Gavin. I just thought I'd let you know that you reverted an edit that an IP made at Talk:Religion when all they were doing was to correct something in a comment that they had left in good faith (actually quite constructive). It wasn't vandalism at all. Fortunately, they restored their comment there. Please understand that I'm not complaining, but I just thought it would be helpful if I pointed it out to you. Happy editing! --Tryptofish (talk) 22:41, 19 June 2011 (UTC)

your vandalism revert
editCan you explain this revert? I was reverting what two items, one was probably vandalism and the other was more debatable, but ran into WP:BLP problems so it should have been discussed on the talk page before being reinstated. --74.138.214.5 (talk) 00:18, 22 June 2011 (UTC)
- No problem, and thanks for restoring. I just wanted to make sure you didn't have an issue with my removing that one item on BLP grounds... it's kind of a trainwreck local issue but doesn't really have much to do with the school. --74.138.214.5 (talk) 00:36, 22 June 2011 (UTC)
Warning vandals
editHello. Regarding the recent revert you made to Diablo III: you may already know about them, but you might find Wikipedia:Template messages/User talk namespace useful. After a revert, these can be placed on the user's talk page to let them know you considered their edit was inappropriate, and also direct new users towards the sandbox. They can also be used to give a stern warning to a vandal when they've been previously warned. Thank you. -- Fyrefly (talk) 21:46, 23 June 2011 (UTC)
- Well there might be a bug in the program then, because no warnings were put on the talk page of the editor whose edits you reverted. -- Fyrefly (talk) 22:13, 23 June 2011 (UTC)

editHi Gavin.perch. Thank you for your work on patrolling new pages and tagging for speedy deletion. I'm just letting you know that I declined your deletion request for Copyright law in India, a page that you tagged for speedy deletion, because the criterion you used or the reason you gave does not cover this kind of page. Please take a moment to look at the suggested tasks for patrollers and review the criteria for speedy deletion. Particularly, the section covering non-criteria. Such pages are best tagged with proposed deletion, proposed deletion for biographies of living persons, or sent to the appropriate deletion discussion. Salvio Let's talk about it! 21:16, 25 June 2011 (UTC)

- I have followed the redirects and ended up in a loop. that is why i request the deletion. Then when User:Salvio giuliano pointed it out i noticed that "&redirect=no" was added to the url. i made a mistake. Sorry. -Gavin Perch talk 21:34, 25 June 2011 (UTC)
- Fuhghettaboutit created the page as a new redirect, but, because of a typo, the page pointed to itself; this is not ground for speedy deletion: the patroller should fix the redirect, instead of tagging the page. I'm sorry I was not more clear (and, besides, Σ is correct: criterion A3 explicitly excludes redirects). Salvio Let's talk about it! 22:01, 25 June 2011 (UTC)

editI'm trying to talk to Gavin about a msg he sent me, but this system defies the laws of logic, help
OK, Here Goes.....
editGavin, you sent me a msg to my Wiki "hompage" saying that changes I made to a number of pages were advertising for my website, and upon checking one of the pages, notice that the link I placed there to my website was removed. I know you are a volunteer, and you are only following a script set up by the lords and masters at the high council of Wikipedia, but here is the problem with whomever set up this policy.... my website is more not for profit than Wikipedia, because, I do not go around asking for donations to keep it going.... further, my website is purely an information website, JUST LIKE Wikipedia, so, if I can't place a link to another reference website, then I will remove ALL references to Wikipedia from my pages, and I will blast the archaic policies your bosses have come up with... now., if there is anything you can do to correct this situation, and keep it from happening in the future, then you-da-man Gavin!, if not, well, it's not your fault... we are all pawns of someone or something else... :-) Toddo from railroadsignals.us Toddgp30 (talk) 04:59, 26 June 2011 (UTC)
- (From talk page stalker:) The relevant policy is found in WP:EL. Linking to not-notable websites is disallowed. That you have something to do with the website makes this a WP:COI issue, and whether your conflict of interest is because you are involved with a for-profit or a not-for-profit organization makes no difference. There is no quid pro quo: Wikipedia is an encyclopedia with policies and guidelines, and we have to play by the rules. All the best, Drmies (talk) 05:03, 26 June 2011 (UTC)

PLAYING BY THE RULES
editWell, as I said earlier, people made the rules, people can change the rules, I wrote a pretty nasty email to the info@ wiki address stating the same thing, one of the things I mentioned in there is that if someone besides myself posted the link to my pages, it would probably be OK according to what Limulus said, so, if the policy is good for you guys, I guess I will have to adopt a similar policy, and ban any mention of Wikipedia from my websites for similar reasons, after all, we can't go around promoting things that help people, can we now?, that just wouldn't be right.... rules are especially stupid when they defy the laws of common sense, and I think this rule qualifies..... check out my homepage later for my rant on this www.railroadsignals.us..... the purpose of my website is to inform people, so they can learn, when another group, organization, or whatever wants to stiffle that learning process, yes, I do have a problem with it, if the people who set up the guidelines can't see their way thru the fog to see that, well, then they are bad people...
Sorry, meant Drmies, not Limulus, toddo

A common problem
editDear Wikipedist editor, I want to submit to your attention an our common problem: disruptive contributions and edit warring operated by user Derek farn (talk). This latter shows systematically a provoking behaviour and lacking of respect for other people’s work, typical of vandalism. I’ve sent this communication to many people having the same problem in order to organize a collective protest/action request directed to e.g. the Arbitration Committee or Requests for comment/User conduct (this latter procedure requires the participation of at least two users) or to the Wikipedia Community. If you agree with this initiative please contact me at this dedicated email address: clipeaster-1971 AT yahoo DOT com. In order to avoid creating of a forum section dedicated to Derek farn I suggest you to delete this communication once you’ve read it and, then, be in contact via email. Any suggestion are welcomed. I look forward to hearing from you. Best regards, Structuralgeol (talk) 17:17, 15 July 2011 (UTC).
- As another user pointed out to me that suggesting to be in contact outside wikipedia is not a correct way, for transparency reasons, so I conclude that we need to correspond via talk page. Best regards, Structuralgeol (talk) 02:27, 16 July 2011 (UTC).

Inviting you to WikiAfrica Incubator!
editHey Gavin,
WikiAfrica invites you to support the Africa Incubator
WikiAfrica is pleased to invite you as a self-declared African Wikipedian to evaluate the Africa Incubator. WikiAfrica has created the Africa Incubator to support and assist new authors, as they create their first articles and learn the ins and outs of contributing to Wikipedia.
The Africa Incubator is a ‘soft landing’ for new authors to develop articles that relate to Africa. It assists them in becoming compliant and knowledgeable of Wikipedia principles and rules. Based within the Wikipedia framework, the Africa Incubator is fully interactive and enables feedback, assistance and forums.
This is where we need your help! For the Africa Incubator to be successful, it needs the intervention, interaction and experience of Incubator Mentors. We are looking for a pool of active experienced Wikipedians to consistently participate in ’owning’ the Africa Incubator. Incubator Mentors will assist new comers through the editing process. They will also help test and expand the Africa Incubator, and will play a vital role in encouraging newcomers to be Wikipedians for life
Please visit WikiAfrica Incubator to give us your honest feedback and evaluation. WikiAfrica is a ground-breaking project that is designed to Africanise Wikipedia by generating and expanding 30,000 articles over two years. Find out more about this project here WikiAfrica. Call for Wikipedians in Residence in Africa
editHello,
I hope you are well and thriving!! WikiAfrica has just put out a call for two Wikipedians in Residence. One in Cape Town at WikiAfrica, at the Africa Centre; and the other for WikiAfrica Cameroon in Douala, at doual’art. If you are interested, please contact either Marilyn [marilyn.doualabell doualart.org] for the WikiAfrica Cameroon call or Isla [islahf africacentre.net] for the WikiAfrica position in Cape Town.
If you are not interested in applying, I would be very grateful if you could spread this call far and wide among your networks to ensure that both projects get excellent candidates. Here is the link for the information page: http://www.wikiafrica.net/two-wikipedians-in-residence-for-africa/

dashes and nbsp
editThank you for you recent changes to some Toyota articles. I reverted some of your edits about dashes and spaces. Some of them had changed the file names of images - which means the image can not be displayed. Some of them changed comments - comments are never displayed, so nbsp's just make the comments harder to read. And many of the remaining nbsp's were to stop line breaks before dashes. I'm not 100% sure if dashes should only have line breaks after them but it seems okay to me for line breaks on either side and the nbsp makes them harder to read. I hope I wasn't too blunt when I reverted your edits. Stepho talk 23:36, 29 January 2013 (UTC)
- Your edits to Mary Seacole and South Africa also broke the images in the article. Please be more careful when using this tool. Celuici (talk) 15:59, 30 January 2013 (UTC)
Sydney September 2013 edit-a-thon invite
editHi there! You are cordially invited to an edit-a-thon this Saturday (21 September) in Sydney at the State Library of New South Wales (SLNSW), where you can collaborate with other Wikipedians throughout the day. Andy Carr, a senior librarian at SLNSW will also be helping out. The theme of the edit-a-thon is paralympics sports, but you are free to come along to meet other wiki contributors, and edit other topics.
If you are unable to attend in person, we will also be collaborating online. Details and an attendee list are at Wikipedia:Meetup/Sydney/September 2013. Hope you can make it! John Vandenberg 09:15, 19 September 2013 (UTC)

Invitation
editThere is a backstage pass coming up to be followed by an editathon in the State Library of New South Wales on 23 November. This is the first time that an Australian cultural institution has opened its doors to us in this way and will be a special opportunity because the Library is providing: one of its best rooms; its expert curators (along with their expertise and their white gloves); a newly launched website (containing new resources); and of course, items from its collection (including rare and usually unavailable material) which we can look at, learn from, and use, to improve WP articles. For example, on the chosen topic (Australia and WWI), the Library holds many diaries and manuscripts from the period.
As you can see from the Library's project page, they have connected this editathon with their own work. They have already set out a wide range of resources to make things easier for us. Please sign up on the editathon project page if you can participate either online or in person with other Wikipedians. Hope to see you there! Lankiveil (speak to me) 12:10, 3 November 2013 (UTC)

Copyright checks when performing AfC reviews
editHello Gavin.perch. This message is part of a mass mailing to people who appear active in reviewing articles for creation submissions. First of all, thank you for taking part in this important work! I'm sorry this message is a form letter – it really was the only way I could think of to covey the issue economically. Of course, this also means that I have not looked to see whether the matter is applicable to you in particular.
The issue is in rather large numbers of copyright violations ("copyvios") making their way through AfC reviews without being detected (even when easy to check, and even when hallmarks of copyvios in the text that should have invited a check, were glaring). A second issue is the correct method of dealing with them when discovered.
If you don't do so already, I'd like to ask for your to help with this problem by taking on the practice of performing a copyvio check as the first step in any AfC review. The most basic method is to simply copy a unique but small portion of text from the draft body and run it through a search engine in quotation marks. Trying this from two different paragraphs is recommended. (If you have any question about whether the text was copied from the draft, rather than the other way around (a "backwards copyvio"), the Wayback Machine is very useful for sussing that out.)
If you do find a copyright violation, please do not decline the draft on that basis. Copyright violations need to be dealt with immediately as they may harm those whose content is being used and expose Wikipedia to potential legal liability. If the draft is substantially a copyvio, and there's no non-infringing version to revert to, please mark the page for speedy deletion right away using {{db-g12|url=URL of source}}. If there is an assertion of permission, please replace the draft article's content with {{subst:copyvio|url=URL of source}}.
Some of the more obvious indicia of a copyvio are use of the first person ("we/our/us..."), phrases like "this site", or apparent artifacts of content written for somewhere else ("top", "go to top", "next page", "click here", use of smartquotes, etc.); inappropriate tone of voice, such as an overly informal tone or a very slanted marketing voice with weasel words; including intellectual property symbols (™,®); and blocks of text being added all at once in a finished form with no misspellings or other errors.
I hope this message finds you well and thanks again you for your efforts in this area. Best regards--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 02:20, 18 November 2014 (UTC).

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. New deal for page patrollers
editHi Gavin.perch,
In order to better control the quality of new pages, keep out the spam, and welcome the genuine newbies, the current system we introduced in 2011 is being updated and improved. The documentation and tutorials have also been revised and given a facelift. Most importantly a new user group New Page Reviewer has been created.
Under the new rule, you may find that you are temporarily unable to mark new pages as reviewed. However, this is nothing to worry about - most current experienced patrollers are being accorded the the new right without the need to apply, and if you have significant previous experience of patrolling new pages, we strongly encourage you to apply for the new right as soon as possible - we need all the help we can get, and we are now providing a dynamic, supportive environment for your work.
Find out more about this exiting new user right now at New Page Reviewers and be sure to read the new tutorial before applying. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 04:29, 13 November 2016 (UTC)
