Speedy deletion nomination of User:Gary Anandasangaree edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on User:Gary Anandasangaree, requesting that it be deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under two or more of the criteria for speedy deletion, by which articles can be deleted at any time, without discussion. If the page meets any of these strictly-defined criteria, then it may be soon be deleted by an administrator. The reasons it has been tagged are:

  • It seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. (See section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion.) Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Business for more information.
  • It appears to be a clear copyright infringement of http://www.voteforgary.ca/. (See section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion.) For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. However, even if you use one of these processes to release copyrighted material to Wikipedia, it still needs to comply with the other policies and guidelines to be eligible for inclusion. If you would like any assistance with this, you can ask a question at the help desk.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Where to put your personal information edit

Hello, Gary Anandasangaree. I saw your note on Cullen328's talk page, asking where you can "write a biography" about yourself. I am what we call a "talk page stalker", which means I read Cullen's talk page, and occasionally I chime in with a comment. I don't know if you saw my reply there so I'll repeat it here.

When you say "write a biography," I assume you don't mean to write a Wikipedia article about yourself. This is an encyclopedia, and Wikipedia articles have to be about things or people that are famous enough to be in an encyclopedia. Most of us are not in that category. But each of us does have a personal page, called a user page, where we can talk about ourselves a little bit, and that's where your "biography" should go.

I see that you did once write something in your user page User:Gary Anandasangaree, but it got deleted. The reason it was deleted was that 1) it seemed to promote something, maybe a business or some service or item for sale (I can't tell what the problem was since I can't see the page; it's been deleted), and 2) it seemed to be copied from somewhere else. Those are both no-nos. But you can still write about yourself on your user page, if you follow Wikipedia's rules. If you want to try again, you can. Just click on the redlink User:Gary Anandasangaree, and start writing. But this time, don't copy from anywhere else, and don't promote anything. You could start slowly, maybe just typing "Hi, I'm Gary Anandasangaree," and click "save" just to see how it works. You can add to it as often as you like, just be careful to stay within Wikipedia's guidelines. Also, don't post any personal information such as your address, phone number or email (but if you've been around the internet for a while, you probably already know that). If you have any questions you can ask me here; I will see it.

And more important than creating your user page: start editing Wikipedia! Read articles about things you are interested in, and if you see something that should be expanded or corrected, just click "edit" and do it! See the note above this one for suggestions. Editing Wikipedia can be a lot of fun, I hope you stay and become a Wikipedian. --MelanieN (talk) 16:54, 13 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hello Gary, I am the person who nominated your user page for deletion. There were a couple of major problems with it:
  • It was a near word-for-word copy-and-paste of http://www.voteforgary.ca/, which is copyrighted material. Using that on Wikipedia is a copyright violation, and you cannot do this even if you are the copyright holder. If you wish to donate your copyrighted material so that it can be used on Wikipedia, you must follow the steps at WP:DCM.
  • It was excessively self-promotional, which is one of the things Wikipedia is not for. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia and not a web host or social networking site. The aforementioned website is presumably your campaign website, and the Wikipedia community takes a very dim view of persons who try to use Wikipedia for personal or political gain.
You should never write about yourself, because you are not an objective judge of your own life's accomplishments. Wikipedia has certain rules surrounding the notability of people and writing biographies of living persons. If what you have done in life is genuinely notable and can be verified by reliable, independent sources, then someone else will write an article about you eventually. It should be done by a disinterested third party; a family or close friend writing about you would be a conflict of interest.
I would advise you to read Wikipedia's userpage policy and remove any material that does not conform to it. User pages are meant for basic biographical information about you, your activities relating to Wikipedia, and disclosures of topics where you may have a conflict of interest. A review of Wikipedia's plain and simple conflict of interest guide would also benefit you as well. Thanks. --Drm310 (talk) 17:32, 14 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
