Totnesmartin 17:34, 15 May 2007 (UTC) Naming conventions I noticed your post on the talk page for the List of NSW Government Agencies. I appreciate it responds to a statement by another user, but as someone who has edited this page recently I have a couple of questions to ask. First, can I take it that all agency names beginning with "New South Wales Department/Agency/Office of xxx" should be "NSW Department/Agency/Office of xxx?" If so, fine by me - just checking as you have a greater knowledge of the style guide than I. Second, I think you may have redirected the Aboriginal Housing Office to the Department of Housing - do you mind if I create an article for it instead? This applies to all the other redlinks on the list - I have recently edited the List to remove the various offices or boards that do not have a sufficiently independent existence to justify their own link and am slowly working through the remainder to give them their own page. In relation to the AHO, it has its own board, its own property portfolio and its own distinct client base and policies, plus its existence is an itneresting concept in public housing service provision (not saying it works that well but this kind of delineation in housing provision is not common around the world). I suppose the point of thiss econd question is - can the remaining redlinks be left where they are for a little while yet so I can get the articles that should be attached to them up and running. "NSW Dept of xxx" reads better and is more likely to be searched for than "New South Wales Dept of xxx", and in creating new articles for the redlinks I will use this format and redirect from the longer form. Thank you also for mentioning Blackett, which is a place I've never heard of (and I live in Sydney). Always good to read something new about your city. The DOH will service indigenous clients but it prefers to refer them to the AHO which tries to place them in housing run by Aboriginal housing companies (like the AHC which runs The Block in Redfern). This arose from the view that traditional public housing was not meeting the cultural needs of Aboriginal clients and that these could only be met by housing providers who were also indigenous. There may (or may not) be merit in this - there are valid arguments about self-determination and supporting indigenous businesses. But the biggest problem is that Aboriginal housing companies end up catering for clients who cannot afford to pay rent, so the housing is much lower quality than DOH stock and the already-disadvantaged clients become even worse off. The Block is a good case in point - from an original 47 terraces only 15 remain. The rest became derelict from lack of maintenance funds and had to be pulled down. The AHC sustains itself by selling surplus land elsewhere, which is not a viable long-term option. Overall, the AHO/AHC structure is an interesting concept but one with a few challenges. This article is a good example of something that was built from nothing. Its involved some hard core research at the State Records Office and Battye Library, but it's paid off. I also used this special drop down box in another article by copying and pasting it into the other article. When I did this I realised that even though the box is hidden the tab that unroles the box actually says, hide. So to open it you have to click twice, is there a way that we can fix this becuase some people might get confused and I could also fix the other one. WP:AFC has a huge backlog (several years) I was trying to help reduce it at the time, so I can't check every detail of what people say, if the submission is sourced and relevant then I had it. If more people help out at WP:AFC, maybe more time can be spent reviewing each article in detail and people can look into the articles they know the most about. As it is with so few people helping out at AFC, the chances of having someone there who knows about a particular subject in detail are very slim. I find it better to simply add the submission and then let wikipedians improve it. I do not think that Neil Smith (politician) fits any of the speedy deletion criteria because There is clearly at least a claim or assertion of significance here. This might or might not pass an AfD, but it is not a proper WP:CSD#A7 in my strong opnion. Rember that pretty much any somewhat plausible claim of notability, unless obviously false or pointless, is enough to stop an A7. Here peopel might legitimately differ on how important this guy reallyb was, so speedty is not the way to go. Try {{prod}} or WP:AFD if you wish.. But there is enough chance that one has become notable during the campaign that IMO a speedy is usually not appropraite. What is enough of a claim to prevent an A7 is a matter of soem debate, and not every editor, or every admin, uses the same standard. I wqas involved in the debates that led to codifing A7 (although only as one of many participants) and my personal standard is "And statement which if supported by reliable sources would probably cause at least soem reasoanble participants in an AfD to opt for keep on the question of notability, and which is not absurd on its face, is enough of a "claim" to prevent an A7." This means that "Joe Blow is King of the World" deosn't make it, becausae that is absurad, althogh it would surely be notable if true. It also means that "Ann Baxter is a professor at AnyState U." doesn't make it, becausse merely beign a professor isn't like to be considered notable by any reasonable wikipedian. But "Ann baxter is a Professor at AnyStae, adn she was the first to describe the species XYZ" is, because that might be considered notable. Again, not everyone would agree with these judgements. Doing this removed a lot of duplicated text (which is what templates should do). Before I put it on any further articles in the series I thought I should see if you agree with what I've done. Happy to discuss change to the look etc of the template or to ditch all together if you don't see it as an improvement. The series of articles could really do with mention of any surf carnivals / surfing championships etc that are held there, but I don't really know much about those kind of events. Maybe they could go to the Cronulla Beach page or alternatively the suburb page at Cronulla, New South Wales. I was planning to eventually create separate pages for those other beaches anyway. I was only waiting until I had a chance to take some photos of those places before creating anything new. If you're really keen, you can start separate articles and I'll put photos in there eventually. Cheers.J Bar 04:34, 22 June 2007 (UTC) Cronulla Garrie, I made some changes to Cronulla, New South Wales because your recent changes had made the layout look like it disjointed and full of white spaces.Just something to be aware when trying to match photos with text, it doesn't always look the same on different size screens. Just letting you know that I'm not just making these changes for the sake of it. Sometimes it doesn't matter if the photos run over into the next section of text, but it does look bad if there are huge gaps in the middle of the sections in the article. Cheers. One thing I do notice, in the Parks section (on a 17" / 1024*768 pixel res) the images on the right hand side go well past the text. Then, below the line of images (with white space on the left) is the gallery. If the gallery is reduced to three images, then the line of images on the right is able to continue past the gallery. If moved Shelly Beach Pavilion out of the gallery down to the culture/sport section, there would be a continuous row of images down the right side... does that look better? I see that the Shelly Beach Pavillion "belongs" to the parks images, but the layout seems better if the gallery is only 3 photos wide. The only other thing is all the images are on the right. I think that's OK - as it seems you do too - but the Picture Tutorial seems to recommend a bit of a more mixed left/right approach. I interpret this comment at Wikipedia:Image use policy quite broadly: In general, galleries are discouraged in main article namespace; historically, such galleries are more often deleted than kept. I would prefer to direct people to the excellent gallery on Commons (that is also your work?) as is done with the commons template, rather than have lots of images in galleries in the sections of the article. With my screen / resolution / preferences - the image in a gallery is too small anyway, and "Bass & Flinders Point" next to "Gunnamatta Pavilion" with different proportions "looks wrong". Also: you are specifying thumbnail sizes... I thought it was "preferred" to leave that out so the size is set by the users individual preferences? My laptop screen size lets me view 4 pictures in a gallery and photos down the side at 270px size with no gaps or running into other sections. Anyway, I won't specify the size of the pictures in future (so they'll be standard 200px) which should avoid the problem for other sizes of screens/ resolution / preferences. As for the left/right approach, I've had other people delete whole sections out of the articles I wrote, just because it looked 'really messy with the photos on the left' on different sized screens, so I avoid doing that now. Hi Garrie, The suburb skeleton I think was the work of PeterJeremy, so I can't take any credit for that. However the satellite image came from http://photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov/catalog/PIA03498 (use the full-res TIF or JPG link on the right hand side of that page). For adding the boundaries, it was very low-tech - I just modified the image in Microsoft Paint, adding a red line for the boundary, and for determining where the boundary was I used both a street directory and the Geographical Names Board of New South Wales website ( go to http://www.gnb.nsw.gov.au/name/search , and then enter the suburb name & click the button, and in the list of results choose the correct one, and then under the "description" bit it will have a link to a map that shows the suburb's boundaries - e.g. Bidwill is shown on this map in the top left quadrant - click to zoom in). I wish there was some easier way of creating free-content boundary maps, but I haven't found one yet. In this context White is being used as synonym for "Caucasian" and Black for "Australoid" or "Aborigine". As such they are not being used as an adjective but rather as a proper noun. Therefore both should be capitalised just as we cpailise "Aboriginal or "Tent Embasssy". OTOH there are numerous instances where the words are simply being used as adjectives, for instance "The number of violent deaths at the hands of white people" does not require capitalisation. As I stated the the Hervey Bay Bombers AFC AfD, I think it is entirely possible that the article could be developed to a reasonable standard. AfD should not be used for articles that only require cleanup rather than deletion. I have had a quick look at your merger proposal and will add my thoughts on the proposal there. Briefly, I generally agree with the proposal without prejudice to re-splitting league articles out when someone has the time and resources to do so. I went down this way thinking that each suburb in the locality should have similiar information.... but that isn't correct. The information you have added, isn't really correct. That is, a number of groups occupied an area between current Parramatta, Penrith, and Windsor. What really needs to be done, is to improve the articles for Eora and a number of other indiginous groups - then link Bidwill etc back to the articles for the indiginous groups who lived there pre-european settlement. I'm not trying to downplay indiginous background of the area: hey one of the adjacent suburbs is named after the main local group at the time Blacks Town Railway Station was built. But the information needs to come across in a way that doesn't make it sound like the Darug people lived at Bidwill: Bidwill is just one of the places that now exists in the area the Dharrug, and other groups, used to live. We have tried to keep standard heading across all the articles. As such, most of the History sections in the articles are split into Aboriginal Culture and European Settlement and then whatever important heading may apply to the history of the suburb. I understand your point about Aborigines actually living in a place called Bidwill, but my information was general and accurate (from the Blactown council website). I think it would be more helpful if you provided more information or rewrote the existing information, rather than delete it. Don't just focus on your local area, have a look at other suburb articles: Five Dock, New South Wales, Summer Hill, New South Wales, Arncliffe, New South Wales.
