Unnecessary number of edits

Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. Regarding your edit(s) to Timeline of file sharing, it is recommended that you use the preview button before you save; this helps you find any errors you have made, reduces edit conflicts, and prevents clogging up recent changes and the page history. Thank you. Instead of making 23 small edits, why not go through the whole page at once, using the Preview button, and then save all your changes as a single edit?

Please don't use this template in the future. I use both diff and preview on the majority of my article-space edits, and I read and revise my talk space edits two or three times before posting. I'm aware that some people don't actually care when others take the time to make their editing transparent, and might prefer seeing every edit to a page that is not their own compacted into one. I definitely don't want to see more of "here's a giant blob of text for you to wade through", especially on articles where there are editors who disagree. While perhaps the addition of hyphens might have been made all one edit, and the addition of all references another, trying to edit an entire article rather than just the sections is much more difficult for me than clicking 'show next' a few times is for you - though I suspect you used 'compare selected', which is even easier. Split edits help you find any errors that I have made and allow you to more easily revert them, they reduce edit conflicts due to the use of section editing, and they prevent ugly diffs like this. So I appreciate your concern, but the multiple edits are both intentional and preferred.    M   14:33, 8 June 2009 (UTC)

Is there some reason you felt it necessary to move the thread to my talk page? The initial message was to you, not to me, so it seems logical that any discussion would take place on your talk page. And it's not like I wouldn't have seen a reply if it was on your page: I watch every page that I edit.

Anyway, I can see your logic to some degree. Actually, though, I didn't use 'compare selected' for anything relating to your string of edits; I just noticed my watchlist was looking like somebody had a case of revision diarrhea.

You are a much more experienced editor than I, so I trust your judgment, but I don't know how much help I would be. I've never done any such thing before. That being said, I'm always glad to help out, and especially if it means gaining experience in the process. So sure, I'm willing.

For the record, I've taken one last step which may take some time. I'm trying to report him to the administrators to see if the user can be warned. Whether that would help or not, I don't know, but it might help to avoid mediation, and will serve us in good stead with the mediator if and when we get there. Thanks again! A request for formal mediation of the dispute concerning Genesis Creation Myth has been filed with the Mediation Committee (MedCom). You have been named as a party in this request. Not for now, but I suppose I could call you a "charter member" . Once we have a more defined workflow/structure/etc., I may open up some so-called "co-coordinator" positions. As I'm sure you realize, there is no difference in functional permission level between "coordinators" and other members. The purpose of the distinction is to give the project visible leader(s) where a need for such may exist. (I should probably mention that on the roster page.)

Why????

Your (obviously automated) message on my talk page invited me to join your project just because I commented on your proposal page. I was against it!!!!! (EDIT: I had partial support, but now I am against it). I was (and still am) against changing the way talk pages are managed, the people who frequent and curate them should be in charge of formatting etc. on them not some project!!!!! I still can't believe I say I am against something and then you turn around and ask me to join...

A quick glance at the project's proposal page (point #8) tells me you gave partial support. Not only that, I responded to your criticism, saying your item of concern would not be part of our scope. So please don't come around acting like I should be aware of something you didn't say.

Your partial support is why I left you a message – and no, it wasn't automated: to make things easier, I just typed it up once and pasted it onto the talk pages of all users involved.

Now, to address your new objections. The talk page guidelines (WP:TP and WP:TPG) are for all of Wikipedia, and we aim to encourage more widespread adherence to them. Our aim is not to fundamentally restructure talk pages that may not follow the normal layout – but if you had read more of the proposal page or the new project page, you would know this already. Due diligence would be much appreciated.

Thanks for the understanding!!! However, I would not like to join as I have one very big objection (already mentioned above I think), I believe that the people who curate and frequent a page should have almost complete control over how that page is formatted (and archived if applicable). You may say "but they still have to follow wikipedia policy- we just enforce it", but I will remind you of how elastic wikipedia police can be, we even have policies saying how elastic it is! Remember it is the wikipedia community as a whole who write, decide on, enforce, and change policy, not just the admins (and whatever other admin-like users we have, stewards I think is one...). This means that one group (even if anyone can join it) should never have complete control over how wikipedia policy is enforced as it is the community as a whole who will do it naturally themselves, in their own way, the way that works best for them.

I see. That's why I was carefully avoiding words like "enforce", because when it comes down to it, we (members) have no more power than any other (non-member) user. Similarly, I do not say they "have to follow wikipedia policy"; I realize where our policies and guidelines come from, and that they are not absolute. I also don't think we are somehow giving ourselves "complete control over how wikipedia policy is enforced"; those who join the project are simply those who agree on the method of enforcement.

I think, if nothing else, we would improve ease-of-use and readability where they are lacking. (Take a look at this cleanup effort.)

The main reason I thought it looked better was that the image's edge pixels were blended with white, which gives it a harsh bumpy edge when used with any other background color.

GOCE Newsletter

GOCE July 2010 backlog elimination drive chart Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive! We have now passed the halfway point, so here's an update. Progress Report - Progress toward the targets has been good. 751 articles out of the approximately 1,600 we would like to get completed by the end of the month were done by July 15, so we will be very close to meeting the target for volume. However, we would like to clear all of the 2008 articles from the backlog, and there are still 892 left to do. Please consider choosing one of these older articles when looking for something to copy edit. If we focus our firepower we can completely wipe out 2008 from the queue. Participation Report - 95 people signed up for the July drive. This is a great result compared to May, when we had 36. However, in May only one person that signed up didn't do any copy edits, and in July only 59 of the 95 have posted any copy edits on the big board. The task may seem insurmountable but please remember that if all 95 participants copy edit just one article a day from now until the end of the month, we will eliminate 1,300 more articles from the backlog. So please consider participating at whatever level you can! All contributions are appreciated. GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive Wrap-up

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors July 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive. Thanks to all who participated in the drive! Over 100 editors—including Jimbo Wales—signed up this time (nearly triple the participants of the May drive). This benefited the Guild as well as the articles in need of copy editing. You can see from the comparison graphs that we increased the number of completed copyedits substantially. Unfortunately, we were not able to meet our goal of completely wiping out 2008 from the queue. We also were not able to reduce the backlog to less than 6,000 articles. We suspect people were busy with real life summertime things, at least in the northern hemisphere! We were able to remove the months of January, February, March, April, and May from the backlog, and we almost wiped out the month of June. We reduced the backlog by 1,289 articles (17%), so all in all it was a very successful drive, and we will be holding another event soon. We'll come up with some new ideas to try to keep things fresh and interesting. Keep up the good work, everybody! Stats If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. If you edited in the May 2010 GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive, your word totals are cumulative for barnstars (not the leaderboard). Over the course of the next week or two, we will be handing out the barnstars. November 2010 backlog elimination drive update

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive! GOCE November 2010 backlog elimination drive progress graphs We have reached the midway point in our backlog elimination drive, so here is an update. Participation report — The November drive has 53 participants at this point. We had 77 participants in the September drive. In July, 95 people signed up for the drive, and in May we had 36. If you are not participating, it is not too late to join! Progress report — The drive is quite successful so far, as we have already almost reached our target of a 10% reduction in the number of articles in the backlog. We are doing very well at keeping our Requests page clear, as those articles count double for word count for this drive. Please keep in mind the possibility of removing other tags when you are finished with an article. If the article no longer needs {{cleanup}}, {{wikify}}, or other similar maintenance tags, please remove them, as this will make the tasks of other WikiProjects easier to complete. November 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive Conclusion

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive! We have reached the end of our fourth backlog elimination drive. Thanks to all who participated. Stats GOCE November 2010 backlog elimination drive graphs 58 people signed up for this drive. Of these, 48 people participated in the drive. Although we did not eliminate the months we planned to (January, February, and March 2009; and August, September, and October 2010), we did reduce the backlog by 627 articles (11.2%), which was over our goal of 10%. 49 awards will go out to 33 of 48 participants. Check out the complete list of barnstar winners here. Barnstars If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. If you participated in the September 2010 backlog elimination drive, you may have earned roll-over words (more details can be found here). Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 backlog elimination drive Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 Backlog elimination drive! The drive is halfway over, so here are some mid-drive stats. Participation GOCE January 2011 backlog elimination drive progress graphs So far, 43 people have signed up for this drive. Of these, 25 have participated. If you signed up for the drive but haven't participated yet, it's not too late! Try to copy edit at least a few articles. Remember, if you have rollover words from the last drive, you will lose them if you do not participate in this drive. If you haven't signed up for the drive yet, you can sign up now. Progress report We have eliminated two months from the backlog – January and February 2009. One of our goals is to eliminate as many months as possible from the 2009 backlog. Please help us reduce the size of this part of the backlog if you haven't already. Another goal is to reduce the entire backlog by 10%, or by 515 articles. GOCE January Backlog elimination drive conclusion

Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 Backlog elimination drive Greetings from the January 2011 Backlog elimination drive! We have reached the end of the month and the end of another successful drive; thanks to all who participated. Statistics 54 people signed up for the year's first Backlog elimination drive. Of these, 40 participated. One of our goals was to reduce the size of the backlog by at least 10%. We managed to reduce the backlog by 633 articles, or about 12%. Another goal was to eliminate as many 2009 months as possible from the queue. We eliminated January, February, March, and April—4 out of 12 months is not bad! In addition, we eliminated 37% of all remaining 2009 articles from the queue. Chaosdruid copy edited Kutch Gurjar Kashtriya for 32,711 words, which is the largest single article completed in one of our drives so far. This article counts as six 5000-K articles, and Chaosdruid wins the "most 5000-K articles" leaderboard category. Way to go! A complete list of individual results is here. Barnstars If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. If you participated in the November 2010 Backlog elimination drive, you may have earned roll-over words (more details can be found here). GOCE drive invitation

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors The latest GOCE backlog elimination drive is under way! It began on 1 July and so far 18 people have signed up to help us reduce the number of articles in need of copyediting. This drive will give a 50% bonus for articles edited from the GOCE requests page. Although we have cleared the backlog of 2009 articles there are still 3,935 articles needing copyediting and any help, no matter how small, would be appreciated. Participation Of the 70 people who signed up for this drive, 40 copy-edited at least one article. Thanks to all who participated! Special acknowledgement goes out to Lfstevens, who did over 200 articles, most of them in the last third of the drive, and topped all three leaderboard categories. You're a superstar! Stfg and others have been pre-checking the articles for quality and conformance to Wikipedia guidelines; some have been nominated for deletion or had some preliminary clean-up done to help make the copy-edit process more fun and appealing. Guild of Copy Editors September 2012 backlog elimination drive wrap-up Participation: Out of 41 people who signed up this drive, 28 copy-edited at least one article. Thanks to all who participated! Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. Progress report: We achieved our primary goal of clearing July, August, September and October 2011 from the backlog. This means that, for the first time since the drives began, the backlog is less than a year. At least 677 tagged articles were copy edited, although 365 new ones were added during the month. The total backlog at the end of the month was 2341 articles, down from 8323 when we started out over two years ago. We completed all 54 requests outstanding before September 2012 as well as eight of those made in September. Copy Edit of the Month: Voting is now over for the August 2012 competition, and prizes will be issued soon. The September 2012 contest is closed for submissions and open for voting. We have reduced our target group of articles—November and December 2011—by over 50%, and 34 of the the 56 requests made in September and October this year have already been fulfilled. However, the rate of tagging for copy edit has increased, and this month we are just keeping the size of the backlog stable. So, all you copy editors, please do come along and help us! Milton Keynes

Thank you for your copyedit to Milton Keynes. We'd really like to get it up to GA standard so please revisit. You may have noticed that I reverted your edit. It was the easiest way to correct two problems.

(A) You were right about the bad maths but wrong about the reason. 196,000 is actually correct - the problem was that at some point someone 'corrected' the "since" date from 1961 to 2001, making nonsense. I have repaired.

(B) The 'Keynes' in J. M. Keynes and Milton Keynes do indeed have the same origin and really ought to be pronounced the same, but unlike wp, we can't correct historical errors! The origin of both is the Norman family, the 'De Cahaignes' which, if it follows modern French pronunciation [big if!], would sound like cah-hay-ns, making JMK correct. But here's the rub - how did it ever get spelled 'key'?

December 2014 GOCE newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors December 2014 Newsletter Drive: Thanks to everyone who participated in November's Backlog Elimination Drive. Of the 43 people who signed up for this drive, 26 copy edited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. Progress report: The November Drive removed 26 requests from the Requests page and 509 articles from the {{copy edit}} backlog. We copy edited 83 articles tagged in the target months; July, August, and September 2013. Together with tag removals from articles unsuitable for copy editing, we eliminated July 2013 from the backlog and reduced August and September's tags to 61 and 70 respectively. As of 01:01, 1 December 2014 (UTC), the backlog stood at 1,974 articles, dipping below 2,000 for the first time in the Guild's history (see graph at right). Well done everyone! Blitz: The December Blitz will run from December 14–20 and will focus on articles related to Religion, in recognition of this month's religious holidays in much of the English-speaking world.
