Boytown

Gainline - can you please take a look at the article labelled "Boytown". I think this should be removed as it is being touted as some village in North Mayo beside Sligo Airport. This is a nonsense - if you look further down the article, it seems to be something from Australia that is on some DVD. I am in favour of its removal as it has invaded even into the Co. Mayo article as a town in Mayo.

Thanks for your reply re. Boytown. However, I think a Google "flag" like that can be put up by anybody and it is not "real". This is a farce, made to look real. It certainly does not meet "notability" guidelines. I seem to recollect you (or was it some other administrator - don't remember) telling me that "Erris" was not notable and its an ancient Barony with some 10,000 residents albeit a scattered rural community. How notable can "Boytown" be? It was listed as a "Town" on the County Mayo page - I removed that. I've no intention of getting into a big argument about this but it's crazy to see this useless "info" being touted as being genuine. I know the page has hardly any views but it still should not be there at all. Seems to me like a drunken joke but I don't have the admin rights to remove it for once and for all. Thanks anyway. Scottish players' association

I'm afraid I know about as much about this as you do. SRPA does come up a few times, but putting in "scottish professional players association" does bring up two pages of stuff on Google.--MacRusgail (talk) 11:08, 11 June 2010 (UTC)

Couldn't find a website for them, I'll see how it goes, might come across stuff as I do the others. GainLine 15:13, 11 June 2010 (UTC)
I can't find a website for either. It's probably a much smaller body, simply because it only covers two teams the now. I'm not sure if SPPA is the actual name, or just a description.--MacRusgail (talk) 16:35, 11 June 2010 (UTC)

Hi, would you be so kind as to give us support!

Hello, I hope you're doing fine and I sincerely apologize for this intrusion. I've just read your profile and I understood that you're an Irishman (I wish I can visit your wonderful country some time soon!), so can you understand what are a minorized language and culture and maybe I am not bothering you and you will help us... I'm a member of a Catalan association "Amical de la Viquipèdia" which is trying to get some recognition as a Catalan Chapter but this hasn't been approved up to that moment. We would appreciate your support, visible if you stick this on your first page: Wikimedia CAT. Supporting us will be like giving equal opportunity to minorized languages and cultures in the future! Thanks again, wishing you a great summer, take care! Keep on preserving your great culture, country, music and language! I'll try to figure out what was the symbol on your page, it intrigues me, it looks like the Irish symbols I know but maybe it's the dark side thing... File copyright problem with File:RUPA.jpg

Thank you for uploading File:RUPA.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the file. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

Because you used a fair use rationale with your upload, the recommended copyright tag is {{non-free logo}}. Please add this to the image and remove the speedy delete template ({{di-no license}}).

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their license and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. Image Screening Bot (talk) 10:07, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

Faulagh

Hi Gainline, Long time, no hear. I'm just wondering why you delinked Faulagh from Kilcommon article? I thought I had it linked previously and discovered it was unlinked so I linked it again this morning. Obviously, I'm not allowed to link it. Why? Thanks. Comhar (talk) 14:03, 26 July 2010 (UTC)

Hello Comhar, hope you're keeping well? If you look carefully at what I did, you'll see that I took the link out of the title and added it back in using a {{main|}} template, giving it a bit more prominence. I have also done similar to Glengad. It's probably a technique that could be useful to yourself interlinking in some of the articles. Hope thats okay? GainLine 15:00, 26 July 2010 (UTC)

Hi, Yes, still about. OK, thanks, I'll take a look at it more carefully.Comhar (talk) 08:38, 27 July 2010 (UTC) Thanks, yes, that's fine. I must be blind! I didn't see the separate link when I first re-linked it. It looks good, I'll use that example in future. Comhar (talk) 18:47, 28 July 2010 (UTC)

Comhar

Well! Yeah, it just appears to be POV stuff, I was just wary of it after seeing this edit (which I've explained on Comhar's talk), and Comhar's user page, so thought it'd be a good idea to make sure she was made aware of the relevant policies to avoid a repeat! Thanks! Fin© 19:43, 28 July 2010 (UTC)

Hi, I'm not involved in the Shell to Sea campaign. Unfortunately for me, I happen to live in the place and am indeed tortured by the incursion of this multinational into my space as everyone is who lives along Sruwaddacon's shores. I always try to be impartial, difficult as I find it. As for my comment on hell - if you look at Fin's page whoever she or he is - you'll find, Gainline, that this person has a box on their page that says that they'll probably go to hell. I assume that they put it there themselves? I think that's a bit weird - I would never put such a thing on my own page for I don't think I'll go to hell. Don't think I'll go to heaven either by the way! So, I wasn't being rude and I have no idea why someone who puts that on their own page would take offence to someone commenting on it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Comhar (talkcontribs)
I think we all just want a nice easygoing editing environment! As regards the hell comment, sometimes the context you mean a phrase in doesn't come across as you meant it in black and white, so it could have been construed as you were telling Fin to go to hell! Anyways, I believe the whole issue has been cleared up and we can all get on with thing. I hope neither of you thought I was poking my nose in, just trying to keep the peace and avoid what happened last year. GainLine 08:53, 29 July 2010 (UTC)

A7?

I'm not sure Examples of an Either/Or is A7. It sucks, and it's horrific, but I think there's no speedy reason for this type of article. Good luck on this one. (I am watching this page, so please reply here.)Timneu22 · talk 12:48, 10 August 2010 (UTC)

I wasn't really sure so I tagged it and figured an admin would make the call, Its gone now anyways GainLine 13:39, 10 August 2010 (UTC)
Admins don't always speedy an article under the "right" criterion when the "wrong" criterion was used. It's a big frustration of mine. Seems the article was closed as a duplicate of Either/Or. Your best bet for WP:ESSAY articles under speedy deletion is to find an article that discusses the topic and use A10. I've tried — many times — to get an Essay or How-to CSD reason, but they just don't believe it's a problem. Sigh. — Timneu22 · talk 13:42, 10 August 2010 (UTC)
Yeh I was thinking that it might have been A10 but I didn't have chance to rectify, cheers GainLine 14:12, 10 August 2010 (UTC)

Your courtesy is appreciated regarding "Fingers"

Hello Gainline, Thank you for the courtesy of actually leaving a message on my talk page explaining why you made the deletion, rather than just doing so, which happens when the PR/marketing departments of companies see an entry that does not fit their spin, however truthful it is. The entry was actually sourced from the Irish Daily Mail who unfortunately do not put their paper on the net, but was reproduced in the blog that I referenced to my addition. Given that it a blog I will defer to your superior judgement and leave things as they stand. I have come across your contributions on a number of occasions and wish you well in the future in adding to uncensored knowledge of Irish and other matters. Kilcommon - Barnatra - John Healy

Hi Gainline,

As you have often told me, Wikipedia is not the place for slurring people or things! A few days ago I removed an apparent slur from the Barnatra subsection) about an individual who runs a shop in Kilcommon, posted by a red-link poster Dublinjem. He has now reposted the same links but one that didn't work previously now works and the owner of the shop in question would appear to be named on one of the links. I don't think it adds to the article and am thinking that maybe I should remove the sub-section on Barnatra altogether? What do you think? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Comhar (talkcontribs)

I had a look at that, I removed the link to the boards.ie discussion on the basis that forums shouldn't be used as references. There is actually nothing in the article itself that is negative about John Healy, just the headline of the newspaper ref thats used to back up the info that he has a shop there. Technically there's nothing wrong with this, it's not saying anything thats not true. The easisest solution would be to find a different source. I definitely wouldn't remove the section just because it contains a reference you don't like, thats a real case of throwing the baby out with the bathwater, having said that, I personally don't see what saying John Healy runs a shop there adds to the article. Unfortunately one of the pillars of Wikipedia is that whatever you submit may be edited mercilessly and you will have to accept that people may change your material beyond recognition. FWIW I think you may be worrying a little too much on this, there's nothing negative in the article and someone reading this would have to go well out of their way to make the link. The info is there and much more accessible on the Western People website already. As regards Dublinjem, try and assume good faith, they are new here and finding their feet which can be daunting enough. Hope thats helpful? GainLine 12:47, 26 August 2010 (UTC)

Thanks. Largest shop for miles around. I wasn't sure what to make of it. Will leave it. Thanks again. Comhar (talk) 20:24, 26 August 2010 (UTC)

Aaron Sorkin: additional info

Dear GainLine,

As a relative newbie, I am unaware as to how to reference information gotten about Aaron Sorkin from a CNN video interview. My attempt to add the information without a reference resulted in it being deleted by a Wikipedian, and rightfully so.

This is the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SLJz5xWPQLI&feature=player_embedded

The information I attempted to add concerned Sorkin's father's WWII service and G.I. Bill college education and Sorkin's paternal grandfather's membership in the ILGWU.

So, how do I reference a video?

Thanks, ErratumMan (talk) 12:47, 5 October 2010 (UTC)ErratumMan

Hi. Unfortunately youtube can't be used as a reference. You can put the link to the video in the see also section but you'll need to find a better reference for what you're trying to add. Have a read of WP:RS, it may help. GainLine 15:51, 5 October 2010 (UTC)

File permission problem with File:Farahswaleh.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Farahswaleh.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Kelly hi! 09:24, 22 December 2010 (UTC)

Just wondering if you had reason to think it was on another WP, or if you got your tags mixed up? The only mention I can find on Google of this person is - or rather 'was' - this article. I deleted it as a hoax as it looked like a load of cobblers as well.... Peridon (talk) 12:13, 13 May 2011 (UTC)

Might have mixed up tags, couldn't understand it so took it to be in wrong placeGainLine 12:15, 13 May 2011 (UTC)
I usually drop the title into Google, and look at what comes up. (In this case, nothing worth having...) You can see that way if there is another article, as WP comes near the top, or at least get an idea of the language. There are often blogs that give their language away. I also use http://www.freetranslation.com/ as a test - drop some of the article in and see what it does with it. The tag you used was db-notenglish, which should have a target. If not sure, best to use notenglish by itself, and drop the little subst message into Pages for Translation, so we can sort it there. Peridon (talk) 12:26, 13 May 2011 (UTC)

Looks like a great addition to the Wiki--I'd say go ahead and move it over the article space and nominate it. Only a few small suggestions. 1) it was a bit "over-linked"--you might take a quick look at WP:LINK to review what's useful there and avoid linking definitions for things like onions or compasses (I only just discovered this great bit of the MOS myself). 2) no space needed between punctuation and reference, just dive right in. 3) I had trouble understanding the Red Cross sentence--it seems to be missing some words that I couldn't fill in myself: "Red Cross parcels because of concerns the Germans would stop these reaching the prisoners if they did discover items hidden in them." I hope that helps. Again, kudos on a good start to this one. Definitely send it to DYK. Khazar (talk) 15:17, 10 June 2011 (UTC)
