Sure thing, I just figured that it was a slight error in judgment that could easily be rectified if acted upon quickly. No real harm done on the part of the blocking administrator, and everything appears to be "back to normal", so to speak. Thanks for dropping me a line! Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Gracenotes edit

It's not your opposition that I have an issue with. It is at least original. My issue is with the seven subsequent oppose votes (which you'll note, are all for the same reason). The first of them was from a user who clearly has an issue with that sort of thing, and that's OK. But the following six never even knew about the issue until they brought up the RfA page – and would certainly not have opposed for it had an oppose vote not already been there. In other words, they're not expressing their opinions, they're blindly expressing someone else's – I would wager that some of them haven't even consulted the discussion page in question, preferring to simply rephrase other people's votes. People who do this are nothing more than sheep. It is difficult to work with such people – Gurch 16:34, 23 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Ah, cheers, thanks for the clarification. I appreciate you dropping by my talk page to explain. As I mentioned, I wasn't offended at all and was just cautioning against employing certain language that could derail the discussion towards something more negative and personalised and steer things away from the subject at hand, which is your man's RfA. Thanks again for the note! gaillimhConas tá tú? 03:11, 24 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Ireland and PR edit

I was not using Wiki as "a place to vent." I changed some wording in the article to explain that contrary to popular belief, Ireland's electoral system is NOT proportional. Proportional representation is an electoral system based on a very simple idea: political parties that receives a certain percentage of the popular vote will receive a similar percentage of seats in parliament. Period. End of story.

This is NOT how the Irish Lower House is elected. Its electoral system is constructed around a single transferable vote within multi-member constituencies based on a quota system. This may be more proportional than plurality (first past the post), but to call it "proportional representation" is simply incorrect. It appears that Sinn Fein have won almost 7% of the vote, but will have only 2.4% of the seats. At the same time, Fianna Fail won 41.6% of the vote, but may win almost half the seats. Some previous Irish elections have been even less proportional than this.

You said it yourself in your message to me ("or perhaps lack therof"). I won't fight you on this one (I don't have time to), but the least you could do is edit "proportional representation" in the Irish articles to read "semi-proportional representation" or something like that.

My two cents. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.36.186.38 (talkcontribs)

Indeed, I agree that the proportional representation system could use some tweaking. You mentioned Sinn Féin, which ended up with four seats, despite having thousands more votes than the Greens, who won two more seats. You can surely count me among the irked in this election and its voting system. However, it might just be best to edit the proportional representation system with a section called "controversy" or a similar title and use this election as evidence of the fact that the system doesn't work perfectly. This is just my own two cents, of course, and feel free to edit Wikipedia however you want; it's just that explaining proportional representation on each page that links to it is going to be a bit tedious and perhaps not relevant to the article itself (the article linking to proportional representation, that is) gaillimhConas tá tú? 20:54, 26 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Regarding [1]: Isn't that pretty pointless? If it is brought up at DRV, that's another five days which naturally will end in "inappropriate early closure" so that another MfD would then be automatically opened. What is the point of that? —Centrxtalk • 05:25, 29 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hehe, I'm not sure how you could think that edit was pointless. If it was, I probably wouldn't have made it, would I? We don't revert closed *fD's. We do, however, have some sort of admin accountability and review system set up at WP:DRV for these sorts of situations, however. I suggest you utilise this venue if you have an issue with the original closure gaillimhConas tá tú? 05:28, 29 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

The British Isles and Ireland - naming dispute edit

Gaillimh

As someone involved in this row I decided that the British pov and Irish pov were completely irreconcilable. I noticed that in the case of the Falklands there are two different articles under two different names for the same place; (Islas Malvinas and Falkland Islands.

I thought that starting an article The British Isles and Ireland modelled on this precedent would solve the problem, those editors who want to define various groups of islands as "British" can continue to do so.

However I have been met with a very extreme and abusive reaction (as have others who have issues with the name). I wonder could you look into this matter and give some view on the propriety of starting an article called The British Isles and Ireland. They participants are too hot under the collar for any rational debate.

Regards (Sarah777 15:28, 29 May 2007 (UTC))Reply

Actually Sarah Islas Malvinas redirects to Falkland Islands.--Lo2u (TC) 18:30, 29 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Are you stalking me? On English Wiki it does; the common English term for the place is "the Malvinas". This is the same imperial arrogance that insists of applying British names to former colonies. (Sarah777 18:37, 29 May 2007 (UTC))Reply
No Sarah. You said something about referring things to a "higher authority" (or something along those lines) so I naturally looked through your contributions to see what on earth you could be talking about and this was the only posting I could find that wasn't on a British Isles page. I see it kind of looks that way - I'll keep away from unrelated pages you're editing in future.--Lo2u (TC) 21:03, 29 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Hi there Sarah! I agree with your estimation that Irish and British opinions are often irreconcilable in these sorts of areas. It seems like we've seen quite a few examples of this over the past few months, hehe. With regards to your suggested article, you may want to check out the British Isles naming dispute article, which appears to be relevant here. If you're feeling harassed by other users, I would be more than happy to talk to these fellows and ask them to stop. I apologise for the lack of immediate help, but if you could point me in a specific direction, I would certainly be up for providing a fresh set of eyes on a subject gaillimhConas tá tú? 21:47, 30 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Thanks G - I'm FREE! No problems with harassment here - but blocking is a different matter. The Irish Famine (book edit

AfD nomination of The Irish Famine (book) edit

I've nominated The Irish Famine (book), an article you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but in this particular case I do not feel that The Irish Famine (book) satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion; I have explained why in the nomination space (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and the Wikipedia deletion policy). Your opinions on the matter are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/The Irish Famine (book) and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You are free to edit the content of The Irish Famine (book) during the discussion but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion discussion. Thank you.

Kind Regards --Domer48 14:41, 8 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Ah, well it appears as I've missed the discussion. I'm glad to see the article wasn't deleted, of course, as notability is rather inherent gaillimhConas tá tú? 11:01, 13 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Dear Gaillimh, thank you for you efforts to build consensus on my RfA. As you know, it was unsuccessful. I am not the type of editor to be disheartened by such a result, and have gained much experience.

I will run again, however I am concerned that I may see your name in the same place, for the same reasons. I would greatly appreciate knowing what I could do to earn your support next time.

If you have anything to contribute by way of improvements or comments, please don’t hesitate to tell me. Kind regards, Dfrg.msc 00:31, 10 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hey there! I'm glad that you're not disheartened by the results and I hope you do ask for buttons in the future. Apologies for the somewhat delayed response (on holiday), but if you're still looking for feedback, all the advice I can give is to treat each user like a real person who is volunteering their valuable time and efforts to this project, much as you are. I'm not very active in the way of clicking my extra buttons, so apologies if you were looking for something a bit more "adminy", hehe :). gaillimhConas tá tú? 11:01, 13 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hello Again edit

Hi Gaillimh; user User:Sony-youth is threatening me again. He's not an admin so far as I know but he is posting "last warning" on my talkpage and elsewhere so he must reckon he can do it without any due process (as happened recently with "Swatjester" who blatantly abused his power in a personal dispute). Could you, as a matter of urgency, tell me whether it is possible for this editor to institute a block without due process. I would have some rather serious counter-claims in the case of User:Sony-youth. Regards (Sarah777 18:44, 13 June 2007 (UTC))Reply

Hi there Sarah! Again, my sincere apologies for not getting back to you right away. I've been on holiday and with limited internet accessibility. I'd be happy to help you out to the best of my abilities, so my first question is if there is still a problem, as I've been away for a bit? If so, just let me know how I can help, and if not, I'm glad things worked out! If you ever find yourself in a bit of a situation again, please feel free to drop me a line, as I'd love to help however I can, but a fellow countryman (or I suppose a countrywoman in your two cases, hehe) Alison is much more active than I and is someone who I'm sure would be willing to help you out. Cheers gaillimhConas tá tú? 20:00, 21 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Article writing edit

Seeing as you're currently opposing me because of my lack of article writing, I would appreciate if you looked at this. I hope you don't mind me posting this on your talk page, but I know some people probably don't watchlist everything they ever edit. Thanks, R ParlateContribs@ (Let's Go Yankees!) 02:04, 7 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hey there R! Thanks for stopping by, I don't mind at all! In fact, you should feel free to post a note here whenever you please! Thanks for taking the time out to re-iterate your position that article writing is unrelated to adminship. I happen to strongly disagree with this philosophy, but no worries, of course. To each his own, eh mate? With regards to my comment on your request, the article writing, or as I think I put it "encyclopedic contributions" is only a part of why I think you're a bit unsuitable for extra buttons at the moment, so give my comment another look. Thanks again for the note, mate gaillimhConas tá tú? 20:32, 7 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

The famine book edit

Hello Gaillimh, I would like if you could justify the notability of the book? Since you authored the article, you would be the best person to ask. It was suggested to me to re-nominate this article for deletion, of merge with the authors article. Since you yourself have already questioned the notability of the book, your opinion would be useful? --Domer48 11:57, 8 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

No, mate, I haven't questioned the notability of the book. I think you may be misinterpreting a previous comment of mine where I said that Toibin and Ferriter's book, The Irish Famine was by no means the definitive scholarly account of the Famine. As mentioned several times previously, this is a formatting tweak that is fully supported by our manual of style. Apologies, but I don't feel as though I have to justify my good faith article creations to you, mate. While I've been away for all of the deletion discussions, I am quite confident that the article satisfies all applicable notability guidelines and policies. Cheers gaillimhConas tá tú? 17:25, 8 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
