Cats and Reference Desk/Science

Your comments at the Reference Desk are generally perspicacious, but I especially liked your comments today apropos of one's hurting a cat in order to make him/her "meow" and one's viewing animals as fungible. Even as I think it more likely than not that the question was posed in jest, I surely worry (notwithstanding that I well know many animals are in abusive homes; I suppose one is upset here because one has a specific example at which to look) that there is a cat out there somewhere being treated as described in the question. The cat with whom I live came to me after living in a similar situation; he was adopted with another cat by a family but returned to the Humane Society because he wasn't as playful as the other cat and thus wasn't enjoyed by the family's children. Your response to the questioner was altogether appropriate, I thought, and I hope, in the case that she should be real, that she will think about the fashion in which she treats her cat. I was particularly surprised to see that some people responded simply to the effect that "some cats are quiet" without making a normative comment; even as I generally avoid expressing opinions vis-à-vis the propriety of conduct referenced in certain questions (or the posing of questions themselves), in view of WP:AGF, WP:NPA, WP:BITE, and my general desire to disseminate information (rather than to debate), even to those with whom I disagree on many issues, I thought this was a case in which something needed to be said, and I thank you for having said it. Hey Joe. Thanks for the endorsement. Like you, I hope it was just an April Fools/All Fools question (though of highly dubious taste); the subject of April Fools pranks is usually not to fool so much as to fool with humor. The question, and what it revealed about the questioner, repulsed me and, though I also try not to inject any normative message in my help desk responses, that one required a corrective response, for all the good it will do (did you see the questioner's later response; grrr). Though I agree in the main with WP:NPA, etc., there are situations where boilerplate policy must yield to the situation confronted. Now that I think about it, I probably shouldn't have used the word fungible—despite its aptness, you have to modify your writing to the suspected level of your audience—I highly doubt the questioner knows the word. Though I'm not implying an affirming the consequent argument, did you know that one of the most common shared traits among serial killers is having tortured animals as children? typo fixing

Hi, I read your tutorial on typo fixing on your user page. I'm glad to see people working on this sort of thing -- I've done a whole bunch of spelling fixes myself. My method is similar, but the details differ: I use Mozilla Firefox, which allows you to open multiple webpages as "tabs" within the same browser window. This makes it easy to have 30 or 40 pages queued up for checking at a time, if you like. The other technique I use is an automated spell-checker: there's SpellBound for Firefox, or the Google Toolbar for both IE and Firefox. One notable thing about typos is that they are often clustered together: an article with one typo is likely to have more. Google Toolbar's spellchecker is particularly good for this: it highlights the misspelled words in the browser's text area, so you can easily ignore the words that aren't actually misspelled. Thanks for dropping by and glad someone read it--I was beginning to wonder if anyone would. I might just download some other browsers to try them out. I don't have much use for a spellchecker though; if I'm copyediting an article, I just make the corrections as I go on sight while making other text changes. Spelling is second nature and secondary when I'm in substantive change mode. I find the practices fundamentally different. I can spend a lot of time making one article fundamentally better, or in the same amount of time, making many articles incrementally better. I think they're comparable pursuits and do both. Hola! Your English is pretty damn good. I'm glad you found the article and like it. I don't like to do things in half-measures and tried to translate with fidelity and into flowing English, along with providing extra research so that an English speaking audience will understand terms that are assumed to be known by Spanish speakers. If your English is good enough to follow along with the article, and I don't know that it is, I would appreciate it if you could review the article for factual accuracy. I tried hard, but my Spanish is not great either and there were certain passages that I may have gotten something confused about. If you find any mistakes, you could either change them yourself, or if you don't trust your English abilities enough to make the changes (which I would of course help with, by reviewing for English fluidity) you can post all necessary changes here. I need to explain that the words post-quem aren't a geologist term but a latin expression, a latinism, thats means "posterior". I used this words for express that something is like a milestone that provides a reference time. For instance, the French Revolution (1789) is a time reference for the last historical epoch. Our times are post-quem; in opposite, the Medieval epoch is ante-quem.

You do the dirty work that I hate (proofreading) and it is much appreciated. Regarding Halloween III, I removed the aside from the plot because it did interrupt the flow. I have been trying to say somewhere in the article that the only reference to the original Halloween in this movie is that Halloween is airing on television the night that the Silver Shamrock commercial is supposed to play (the commercial airs right after the movie ends), but I can't get it to fit anywhere in the article very well. There's a lot to know here about the technical aspects of things--placing pages in appropriate categories, stub tags, wiki formatting, image markup, copyright tagging, article style convention and the numerous policies that are taken into consideration in article treatment, to name a few. A really good place to start is the Wikipedia:Tutorial. Again, if you have a technical (or other) issue, feel free to ask me. By the way, you signed you post to me by typing your name out. An easier and more useful way of signing posts is to type four tildes (~~~~). This automatically formats your username as a clickable link and leaves a date and time stamp. Spanish Translations

Outstanding work on single-handedly translating the Cao Yu article at WP:SPATRA; that's a long article, and you've done a clean job. Just be careful not too burn yourself out like so many others, but you've been around long enough I'm probably preaching to the choir. Thanks for the kind words. I enjoy translating from Spanish. My Spanish is not very fluent and I am hoping it will get better through translation. I find that a lot of translations end up sounding awkward because the original grammar never truly gets converted to English. I think to some extent it's an advantage to have to struggle, because without glib fluency, I am better able to convert the text completely to English syntax, and writing in English is what I do for a living. On the help front, this might be too much to ask, but I was just stumped with some parts of the translation of Trabancos River. The article is an artículos destacados, and is chock full of obscure (to me) geology and archeology terms. The main author of the Spanish article has been helping out with corrections. However, he also translated a number of sections but his English isn't great, and the sections were so garbled that in my attempt to turn them into English, I may have lost some of the meaning. Maybe you could take a look at the translation and see if there are any problems in the geology section translations? There are also a number of passages that remain untranslated (untranslated text appears in the article awaiting help). --Fuhghettaboutit 23:47, 8 May 2006 (UTC)

Your remark, "...the original grammar never truly gets converted to English" puzzles me (as a full-time translator active in the Hebrew-English community). What do you think of this guideline for successful translation: "Your task is to fully comprehend the text as written in the source language, and then to accurately express its meaning in the target language." The part about the source text, by the way, allows a competent writer to translate from a foreign language even without full command of the FL. I certainly do so myself! No your misinterpreting what I'm saying and I may have spoken without perfect clarity. Of course a professional translator strives to translate completely. I'm referring to the fact that you'll find many translated articles here, done by those fluent in both languages but not adept enough in writing to take the meaning and completely change into English, or not fluent enough in English to know that the translator's task does not end at translating the words and idioms, and sometimes just not done with the care necessary to translate with fidelity. So what you get is sentences that have the correct English words, but the arrangement screams the other language's grammar rules. I also see many where the translation is just completely wrong. A translated article I looked at recently contained the word courtesans over and over, when what was meant was courtiers (ha!).--Fuhghettaboutit 01:04, 20 May 2006 (UTC)

Well, perhaps not misinterpreting, but certainly my alarm was misplaced; thanks for the thoughtful clarification. The unwanted interference of source-language grammar artifacts influencing the target writing you describe, is what we (he>en xlators) call the "Heblish effect" -- the remedy for which generally involves first doing a strictly literal translation, having this approved by the author or au's agent (as many Hebrew speakers have excellent reading knowledge of English, a boon to their translators), then editing the product into native English with the target readership in mind. Works for me!

I love your "courtesans/courtiers" example. More truth than poetry there, perhaps... as in, "A [whore] by any other name..."!

While it's certainly valuable to remind people of substituting templates, I'm not sure doing so mechanically is advisable. By analogy, while it's great to leave welcome templates on new user pages, I always think you should look at their contributions before deciding which template is right, how to personalize etc. As someone with hundreds and hundreds of substituted templates under my belt, being mechanically reminded of one I missed with a template, I must confess, I find slightly irksome. Phantasm

Never seen Phantasm before. Must be good judging by its plot. I can see films like A Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th being future horror collaborations, and books like Dracula and Frankenstein. I don't really know how to improve film articles be honest, because I have never made hefty contributions to any film article. So far my horror contributions have been limited to adding info boxes and uploading movie posters to horror articles. I always find that a great way to start any article is by looking at a sterling example in the area. See Halloween (film) to see the organization and form of a great film article. Phantasm is really a classic but it may be hard to work up any enthusiasm if you've never seen it (it's worth seeing if you are a horror fan, not the least for its cult appeal). There are cheesy parts--let's not forget this is a low budget 70s horror flick, but some of the images, the music--it made a deep impression. I myself have never done a great deal of work on bringing a movie article to high polish from beginnings, concentrating in other areas. It was only after editing the three excellent Halloween articles mostly written by Dmoon1 (two of which are featured articles) that WikiProject horror was set up by Myles Long who invited me to join. The HCOTM was set up by me only last week, so the whole project is just finding its legs. The more that can contribute the better.--Fuhghettaboutit 11:32, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

Even though I haven't seen this film, I would like to contribute to this article and help. I nominated this article as the movie made such an impression on me when I first saw it and it's fairly well known, but I'm now second guessing the choice. You could be right. The only very very well known horror films that spring to mind are Evil Dead, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Exorcist, Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street and so on. The Halloween article would be a good layout to use though for an article. I just hope someone can give major help with the referencing, DMoon1 seems a master at referencing. Even if Phantasm doesn't get nominated, I still wouldn't mind helping you with a major write up of it though. We don't have to wait to see if it becames the Horror Collaboration, we could start whenever if you like. I notice there is an article on a sentinel sphere which is Phantasm related, which could maybe benefit from a picture to illustrate it. I think your interpretation of "coves" is pretty good, but you might get an even better translation using "dams" and "lakes." Presas would be translated "Dams" literally, but you're right to assume an idiom, because logically the people don't bathe in the dams per se. I've never visited the es:Sierra de Guadarrama, but I'm guessing from the context that the entire river is dammed with successive little dams, rather than making little coves off to the side. So maybe it would be better to say "there are successive man-made dams that create small lakes (or ponds or even pools) perfect for bathing in the summer." - Draeco 16:34, 18 May 2006 (UTC)

Hiya! I was loitering around in the toolkit, watching people make edits (well, watching for vandalism and other nastiness, really) and one of your edit summaries caught my eye:

While it's absolutely wonderful to welcome people, when they (eventually) learn to check the page history, it might be a little disheartening to learn that the welcome message they got was cookie-cutter. This is just my opinion on the matter, of course, but might I suggest using "Welcome to Wikipedia!" or "Welcoming our brand new editor!" instead?

If you'd like, I've got a personal {{welcomeg}} that I use: User:Kylu/welcome, I like the fact that it's custom and shows that I'm personally putting some effort into welcoming users. If you like it (well, other than the graphic and color scheme, they might be a little too girly for you? :D) you're welcome to it! I doubt you need help in editing the template, from what I see of your userpage, and certainly you've got a mass more seniority here than I do, but if you'd like help translating the weird markup I used, please ask. :)

Hey Kylu. Thanks for the thoughtful message. Yeah, I would definitely need to change it navy blue and put a muscle car where the heart is (hee). Actually, I've thought about making a personal welcome template and modeling it off of welcomeg but it's never struck me as vital. The thing is, if it's your own template, it's still a template. The important part for me, is that when someone sees the part in that template (other any other welcome template) about feeling free to ask me on my talk page for help and they do so, then they get a full personal response and whatever help I can offer. I guess what I'm saying is that the welcomeg is akin to form letter (with lots of useful information), while a personal welcome template is still a form letter but which you personally signed—I'm not sure the difference is that vast when the text is still the same for each person you welcome with it, after all you didn't do anything personalized with respect to that person or any action of that person. I think you're right though that I should reform my edit summaries. Maybe that's the way to make it even more personal than a personalized welcome template could: leave an edit summary like "Again, welcome, and if you need any help feel to drop me a message on my talk page." Oh by the way, I'm sure it makes sense and I'm just missing it, but I'm befuddled by the part of your message about my name and "copyvio?". Hey thanks for the warm reception and invite! I voted for Carpenter just because I do have a soft spot for The Thing and Starman. Say do you guys do books too? I am somewhat shocked (alright just slightly bothered) to see how short the article is on the Exorcist, my all-time favorite horror novel. Plus, no entry for Salem's Lot the tv movie?! Here I was working on wikipedia articles that are, you know, about reality and discover that all this great stuff is not even covered or badly covered. As for future collaborations, I think these two rank pretty high. David Pittman

Hi, I'm a bit puzzled by this one. I remember the Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Michael John Ainsworth incident (can visualise the picture in the article!). Ainswrrth was added to the Western Suburbs Magpies by the user 203.213.7.130 and I deleted the reference. But I can find no evidence that this user had anything to do with a David Pittman article and I have no memory of such an article. Maybe some random coincidence? I was puzzled too--why would such a different name be a redirect to that article? and since it made my watchlist and was just created, it had to be previously deleted. Oh well. Sometimes mysterious things happen with the software although I'm imagining it is something like this: I placed a speedy tag on David Pittman, probably a db-empty because I would never nominate the current article's text for deletion. With regard to where to respond--there is no set policy or even recommendation. Personally I believe that discussions should be able to be followed in one place, so once I say something on someone's talk page I always monitor there for a while, but others, probably correctly, believe that since leaving a comment on another's talk page gives them the "you have new messages" alert, it's always better to respond there; I split the baby by posting to both. The city-town thing is a bit confusing, because the definitions in English and in German (Stadt) don't match exactly. A place with a town charter is called Stadt in German, and town or city in English. For categories, all towns bigger than 100,000 inhabitants are called "city" (see Category:Cities in Germany), all places smaller than 100,000, with or without town charter, are called "town". Actually towns over 100,000 are called Großstadt in German. The Brandenburg template shows districts and district-free cities/towns. Werder isn't district-free. Markussep 23:21, 3 June 2006 (UTC)

Here's the thing: Wikipedia is an encyclopedia. It's not a primary source or even a secondary source. Encyclopedia articles are on subjects already well known--the standard is notability. I don't quite understand, are you Philip Brown, is he someone you know? IRAS Disambiguation

Fuhghettaboutit, I have a newbie question. Since you were kind enough to leave me a welcome note, I am directing it at you. I want to create a disambiguation page for the IRAS (Indian Railways Accounts Service) but the entry for the IRAS is a full article and not a redirection. How does one fix this. Do we normally move the article to an article with the full name? Rajat Bhargav

Hi Rajat. I see the problem. You need the IRAS name for the disambiguation name, but it is the article on Infrared Astronomical Satellite. As I see it, you have a couple of options. First, you can ask for an administrator to move the article IRAS to its full name, Infrared Astronomical Satellite, using the fact that articles should normally be under their full names, as well as the need for the IRAS disambiguation page as a basis. Normally you could just do that move yourself, but you need an administrator to make a move of a page where the page being moved to already exists, as is the case here (the software won't allow you to make a move where the destination is already taken). Note that you should never perform a move like this by hand, i.e. cutting and pasting the text of IRAS into its full name so you free up the page. By doing so, the article under the new name would lose its edit history. It's also always a good idea to seek consensus before making controversial page moves.

In order to request the move, you would follow the instructions at Wikipedia:Requested moves. Basically, it involves listing the requested move at that page with your rationale, and placing a template on the talk page of the existing article for IRAS which notes that you are requesting the move at Wikipedia:Requested moves, and duplicating your rationale text. If the article is moved after consensus is reached, then IRAS will become a redirect that you can make into the disambiguation page. Your second option is to simply place a header on the existing article for IRAS in the form found at Wikipedia:Disambiguation#Disambiguation links. This is certainly the easier option. It would look something like this (and see this in edit mode for the code I used):

This would at least inform people of this other use of the acronym IRAS. I also think you should move all of of your acronym articles to their full titles, the way I did to IRIMEE. If you don't know, when you move a page, it automatically make the prior name of the article a redirect to the new name, so you don't have to worry about making the redirects by hand (this is also the reason the software won't allow you to move a page where both names already exist). John Carpenter Redux

Since you have been the other primary contributor to the JC article, I thought I'd let you know about the limitations of what I can contribute, so that other sections can be taken up by different contributors.

The JC films that I can write about with some authority are ASOP 13, The Fog, and The Thing. I've written about all three, and I still need to slightly expand, fine-tune, and add refs. to the latter two. I'll continue to edit, and I can clean up other contributor's prose if need be, but I think I've just about reached my limit for adding content.

That will inform the reviewing administrator of your concern. I invite you to review Wikipedia:Copyright problems which states in relevant part that:

Copyright owners who submitted their own work to Wikipedia: If you submitted work to Wikipedia which you had previously published (especially online), and your submission was marked as a potential infringement of copyright, stating that you are the copyright holder of the work on the article's talk page helps, but will not likely prevent deletion. It is sufficient to:

• Make a note permitting reuse under the GFDL at the site of the original publication.
• Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions at wikimedia dot org or a postal message to the Wikimedia Foundation.

On a separate front, even if the article had no copyright violation, I would likely have proposed it for deletion. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a free advertisement service. The criteria we use is notability, as in the subjects of articles must be notable. Please review What Wikipedia is not; especially the section on Wikipedia not being a soapbox. As far as I can tell, your product may be useful or even brilliant, but it is not notable enough to be included in an encyclopedia. 205.188.117.6 "BEATLEWILL" This user has repetedly used a main article page to use it for a forum to rant his "opinions" (not facts) - it has already been reverted to the talk or discussion page where is belongs by a wise monitor/editor. But he refuses to take heed and puts up the same "disputes" and "opinion pieces" on a main subject page. THis is esp. true for the article on ART LORIA where the article shows his contributions to the music industry and is sourced, referenced and cited and properly formated.

Then 205.188.117.6 "BEATLEWILL" will come along and deface the article and rant about his opinions on his particular taste in music. Seems that because Mr. Loria was a "DOO WOP" performer, this vandal who has a more un-flattering for that genre of music, rather would share his opionin of the Beatles instead. BEATLEWILL even calims to be a spokesperson foe the Beatles and offers statements on what Yoko Ono or Psul McCartney would have to say. This is a disgrace! But totally acceptable if placed in the right forum. He has been corrected officially once, warned several times, but his banter continues.

That is is right and opinion of course - we just ask that he not be allowed to deface and disgrace an article main page in doing so. It takes away from the integrity of the music, theartist and WIKIPEDIA. Please follow the history of this user and look into this matter / complaint I have discussd. I'm doing research for a book and this is getting quite annoying. I see you asked this question of a number of other editors. As they advised, that ip is assigned to AOL and has multiple users. Others have also stated they will monitor the ip for vandalism, including an administrator. Don't worry about it at all (and it happens to us all ocassionally). Ips are allowed to edit as well. There is no way to correct it—you can't reallocate edits. However, if you make an additional change to that article, and you want to claim ownership of your prior anonymous edits, simply place in the edit summary (after noting your current changes, of course)--something like "Note unrelated to this edit: previous edits by 123.45.678 were by me as well, while not logged in." --Fuhghettaboutit 21:17, 15 June 2006 (UTC)
