Welcome to Wikipedia. Everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia. However, please do not remove citations or information sourced through citations simply because a link to a source is not working, as you did to The Colbert Report. Dead links should not be deleted. Instead, please repair or replace the link, if possible, and ensure properly sourced information is retained. Often, a live substitute link can be found. Links not used as references, notes or citations are not as important, such as those listed in the "External links" or "Further reading" sections, but bad links in those sections should also be fixed if possible. Please take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you. -- Irn (talk) 00:13, 19 October 2012 (UTC)
- So I just went through and undid every edit you made with the summary "Removed Dead Link(s)", and I saw that you made a lot of edits and put in a lot of time (and effort) in doing so. I think it's great that you were willing to do that, and I don't want you to get discouraged because I undid so much of your work. I hope that you continue devoting your time and energy to making this encyclopedia that much better. Feel free to drop me a line if you have any questions. Cheers, -- Irn (talk) 00:27, 19 October 2012 (UTC)
- It's not a problem. I'll go back to those pages again and try to replace the links with valid ones instead of delete them. Also, just so you know, some of the pages had only one link to delete, and those edits were labeled "Removed Dead Link" instead. Cheers, --Freebirdthemonk (talk) 00:33, 19 October 2012 (UTC)
- Glad to hear that. Good luck and happy editing. -- Irn (talk) 14:10, 19 October 2012 (UTC)

I reverted your edits on Virginia Foxx. Even though the links are dead, the information included in the citations can be used to find the information elsewhere. Although both of the citations are not particularly well-identified, I was able to find an Internet Archive copy of the first link ([1]), and it does support the article; I will attempt to find a working link for the other citation. We have the {{deadlink}} template as a note, not as carte blanche to delete the citation. Often, there are other means of getting the information from citations, including (in some cases) actually finding a hard-copy version of the citation in a library somewhere and finding what is written on paper. The other citation is from The Winston-Salem Journal, which is a regional newspaper with a circulation area comprising three states; I suspect that someone will be able to find a cite somewhere. Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that you've added some links pointing to disambiguation pages. Replaceable fair use File:10.2 Surround Sound Speaker Configuration.png
Thanks for uploading File:10.2 Surround Sound Speaker Configuration.png. I noticed the description page specifies that this media item is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails the first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media item could be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone. If you believe this media item is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the file description page and edit it to add
{{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}
, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template. - On the file discussion page, write the reason why this media item is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Fut.Perf. ☼ 13:36, 20 October 2012 (UTC)
- Hi Fut.Perf. -- When I uploaded File:10.2 Surround Sound Speaker Configuration.png I was simply converting the JPEG version (File:10.2 surround sound speaker configuration.jpg from 10.2 surround sound to a PNG format and copied the content in the description verbatim. The JPG version does not have a fair use policy violation listed, so is it still applicable to the PNG version of the same file? Cheers, --Freebirdthemonk (talk) 21:50, 20 October 2012 (UTC)
Orphaned non-free media (File:Lutheran South Banner.png)
Thanks for uploading File:Lutheran South Banner.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 04:44, 24 October 2012 (UTC)

November 2012
In a recent edit to the page Bikini Atoll, you changed one or more words or styles from one national variety of English to another. Because Wikipedia has readers from all over the world, our policy is to respect national varieties of English in Wikipedia articles.
For a subject exclusively related to the United Kingdom (for example, a famous British person), use British English. For something related to the United States in the same way, use American English. For something related to another English-speaking country, such as Canada, Australia, or New Zealand, use the variety of English used there. For an international topic, use the form of English that the original author used.
In view of that, please don't change articles from one version of English to another, even if you don't normally use the version in which the article is written. Respect other people's versions of English. They, in turn, should respect yours. Other general guidelines on how Wikipedia articles are written can be found in the Manual of Style. If you have any questions about this, you can ask me on my talk page or visit the help desk. Thank you. RexxS (talk) 00:06, 19 November 2012 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Template:74th Texas Legislature
A tag has been placed on Template:74th Texas Legislature, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done for the following reason:
Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet basic Wikipedia criteria may be deleted at any time.
If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. Freebirdthemonk (talk) 19:23, 28 November 2012 (UTC)

GOCE November drive wrap-up
Guild of Copy Editors November 2012 backlog elimination drive wrap-up
Participation: Thanks to all who participated! Out of 38 people who signed up this drive, 33 copy-edited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. All the barnstars have now been distributed. Progress report: We achieved our primary goal of clearing November and December 2011 from the backlog. For the first time since the drives began, the backlog consists only of articles tagged in the current year. The total backlog at the end of the month was 2690 articles, down from 8323 when we started out over two years ago. We completed all 56 requests outstanding before November 2012 as well as eight of those made in November. Copy Edit of the Month: Voting is now over for the October 2012 competition, and prizes have been issued. The November 2012 contest is closed for submissions and open for voting. The December 2012 contest is now open for submissions. Everyone is welcome to submit entries and to vote. Coodinator election: The six-month term for our fourth tranche of Guild coordinators will expire at the end of December. Nominations are open for the fifth tranche of coordinators, who will serve from 1 January to 30 June 2013. For complete information, please have a look at the election page. – Your drive coordinators: Stfg, Allens, and Torchiest. list of jewish communities in the united states of america
Hi, dear editor mister freebirdthemonk, I have been working in the article list of jewish communities in the usa, and I did order it by states and counties, so please do not remove my headlines, thanks..
- Gylatshalit, my sincere apologies for deleting any of the headers on your page. I edit errors using WikiCleaner, but it isn't very good at accounting for works in progress. PS - Make sure none of your headers have only one "=", especially in the "References" and "See Also" sections, as they should always have two "==" on either side of the header. Title linked in text corrections
Hi. I noticed your edit of a link in a tree that pointed back to the page that the tree is on. I had especially left the links there, so that it automatically emboldens the text to indicate where the individual falls on the tree and for all the trees to be uniform so that inconsistencies don't develop in the tree on the different respective pages it's found on. I would like to inquire if it's necessary to remove the link, ie, is it a WP requirement? If not, I'd like to revert it back for the reasons I stated. Thanks. (The edit I'm referring to: Chen Wanting) ~ InferKNOX (talk) 21:35, 9 December 2012 (UTC)
- Hi InferKNOX. In most cases, we want to remove links to the same article because they aren't useful and don't really contribute anything to the article. However, in the case of your tree (which is a fantastic addition to the article, by the way), it only makes sense to keep the link. I already went back and reverted my edit so the article should be fixed. I'm usually making these types of edits using WikiCleaner and can only see the markup instead of the actual preview, so it looked to me like a table (where these types of errors generally occur). I looked over the markup of your tree so that, if I see it again, I won't delete your links. However, if I do end up deleting them on any of your other trees by mistake, feel free to just revert my edits. Cheers, Freebirdthemonk (talk) 00:21, 10 December 2012 (UTC)
- PS - I have added an exception for your charts in WikiCleaner. As long as your HTML formatting is the same as in Chen Wangting, you should have no further problems with anyone using WikiCleaner undoing your work. Cheers, Freebirdthemonk (talk) 02:16, 10 December 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks Freebirdthemonk. I just wanted to be sure, just in case WP found it unacceptable to have such links. I am quite a novice editor, so am not too familiar with the various regulations. I appreciate your help and your liking the tree too. ^_^ ~ InferKNOX (talk) 12:10, 11 December 2012 (UTC)

Ottamthullal
I would appreciate it if you would consider including evidence to corroborate your allegation of copyright infringement, thereby enabling other editors to address the outstanding issues with the article in question. Mephistophelian (contact) 18:01, 31 December 2012 (UTC).
- Mephistophelian - I tried looking for copyrighted information (as a majority of the text appears to be from a story book or informational text), but have not been able to find anything similar. Since it is possible that I was wrong and the text is just written in a storybook style, what do I need to do in order to withdraw the article's NfD? Cheers, Freebirdthemonk 18:11, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
- I would just clarify underneath that you have decided to withdraw the nomination, thereby notifying another editor, usually an administrator, to close the discussion as a straightforward matter of procedure. Thanks, Mephistophelian (contact) 18:32, 31 December 2012 (UTC).

Shadowed Ribbons
Hi Achowat - Lately I've been trying my hand at making some barnstar ribbons, but I seem to be having some trouble making them look right. The primary problem I'm having is not being able to make the shadowing look right, and the lines embedded in the ribbon lining up right. Is there a simple way to place the proper shadow on the ribbon so it looks right? Cheers, Freebirdthemonk 04:53, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
- The absolute simplest way is to download the basic colored ribbons. (brown, blue, green, white, yellow, red, black, purple are the obvious ones) and then simply copy-paste the right colors in bars, making sure to join them up at the exact right place. The trouble with this, of course, is that you need to give proper licensing information for each and every ribbon you use. If you have any other questions, let me know. Achowat (talk) 05:32, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
- This makes things a lot easier. Thanks for your help. Cheers, Freebirdthemonk Howdy! 17:24, 2 January 2013 (UTC)

Copy-editing Otto I, date formats
Hello Freebirdthemonk, first of all thank you for helping with a copy-edit of this article. It's appreciated. However i am not sure, if your latest date changes comply with Wikis Manual of Style MOS:DATE (section "Dates"). It seems to be either "month day comma year" or "day month year" (without comma). I have no preference either way, just pointing out the possible minor issue. GermanJoe (talk) 09:11, 2 January 2013 (UTC)
- Hi GermanJoe - thanks for bringing this to my attention. You are absolutely right - I didn't realize I had left all of the dates wrong. This was the very last article I edited last night, at roughly 11PM Central US time, so I guess I must have simply overlooked it. Before I change any of the other dates, however, I'd like to ask if you have a specific preference between regular dates, month-day-year (mdy) dates with commas or day-month-year (dmy) dates without commas. Personally, I prefer dmy dates without commas, but it's your call. Cheers, Freebirdthemonk Howdy! 11:59, 2 January 2013 (UTC)
- After spotchecking a few other German and non-German emperor articles, it seems like DD month YYYY is slightly more used. So let's use this format for now, although both are valid. No hurry with the article, i know it's a lot of text to check. If you need further information, feel free to ping me anytime - or perhaps better leave a note on the article talkpage, where some of the other contributors occasionally post. GermanJoe (talk) 12:20, 2 January 2013 (UTC)
- Sounds good. Also, once I finish the copy edit and date changes, I will add a reply to your thread in Talk:Otto I, Holy Roman Emperor. If you have any questions, or if I make any more mistakes, feel free to post them here. I will leave this thread on my talk page until the copy edit is finished so all of the discussions can be kept in one place. Cheers, Freebirdthemonk Howdy! 17:21, 2 January 2013 (UTC)

Could you point to exactly what you thought was wrong in the tone or wording - I've added a few quotes marks to emphasise the point that each statement made is taken directly from the sources and is supported by in-line references ---- nonsense ferret 18:54, 30 January 2013 (UTC)
- My only concern with the article was the use of peacock terms such as "respected shop steward" and the use of weasel words such as "considerable political commitment" in the lead. However, it looks fine now with the added quotations. Just re-submit the article for review and I will accept it into the mainspace. Cheers, Freebirdthemonk Howdy! 19:27, 30 January 2013 (UTC)

Copy edits
Hi there. Thanks for participating in the WP:GOCE January backlog drive! I checked a few of your copy edits, and they are generally good. There were a few minor points I wanted to mention. On Sandra Fluke, I changed a part in the testimony section. "The activist" is potentially confusing, and "various" is vague and doesn't add anything to the reader's comprehension. A specific number there would be best, if the number of points she raised were known. On Polyus (spacecraft), I removed the extra year. The standard practice for articles is that, once a year is mentioned, it is presumed all subsequent dates are the same year until a new one is mentioned. Otherwise, your work looks good; keep it up, and thanks again! —Torchiest talkedits 19:28, 30 January 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for the pointers. I think I did the same thing with the dates on some of the other copy edits, so I'll go back through and check to make sure they are corrected. Thanks again! Cheers, Freebirdthemonk Howdy! 19:33, 30 January 2013 (UTC)

Hi,
I'm trying to improve my edit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_creation/Palazzo_Margherita_(Bernalda) I added some references. Could you check again, please? I'm new and there a lot of rules to respect... Thanks a lot Dishv80 (talk) 22:40, 4 February 2013 (UTC)
- Hi Dishv80. I took a look at the article again, and the new references look good. However, I think that the article still needs to be expanded a bit more. For example, I would recommend expanding and writing a comprehensive history of the building, especially during the time of Giuseppe Margherita's ownership. Also, in the context of the article, the phrase "Sofia's wedding to Thomas Mars" is confusing and needs to be clarified. Another thing that would look good in this article is an infobox. The easiest way to do this would be copy the code from another article, such as Bulloch County Courthouse, copy it into the article and fill in the appropriate information. I know there's a lot of red tape when it comes to creating articles, but its just there to make sure quality articles are added to the encyclopedia. If you have any other questions or want me to look over the article again, just add another post to my talk page. Keep up the good work! Cheers, Freebirds Howdy! 15:53, 5 February 2013 (UTC)

Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/428th Field Artillery Brigade.
Thank you for reviewing my article. However, I wouldn't have submitted the article w/o presenting "verifiable references." Did you check the Reference section to the article? It provides the links straight from where I found the information. The website is an official U.S. Army website and as such used as a primary reference. As an officer who serves in that unit, I wouldn't have an amateur mistake of not providing a reference to the article of the unit.Shovonma17 (talk) 02:30, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
- Hi Shovonma17, and thanks for bringing this to my attention. You are absolutely right - this article should not have been tagged for inadequate references. In fact, the submission should not have been declined at all - only my comment on the prose should have been added. I have retracted the decline notice from the page and added the submission review template back to the article. When the article has been completed to your liking, feel free to respond to this thread and I will review the article again. Cheers, Freebirds Howdy! 12:56, 19 February 2013 (UTC)
- Hello Freebirds, I have edited the History section to the prose format as you suggested. I'm waiting for the approval. If you have anymore suggestions, please let me know. Shovonma17 (talk) 21:10, 19 February 2013 (UTC)
- Shovonma17, I looked over the article and everything seems to be in order. After making a few minor tweaks, I added your article to the mainspace, and it can now be found at 428th Field Artillery Brigade. My best advice would be to continue adding sources and information to the article to improve the article's quality. If you have any other questions or concerns, or ever have another article waiting for review in AfC, feel free to leave me a message and I will gladly take a look at it. Please take another look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_creation/James_Lawrence_(footballer) I'm reluctant to add more narrative - what's there is accurate and it can develop over time. - Hi Drmies. I moved the article from the user's userpage into AfC because it was tagged for AfC review. I am aware that the article is far from being ready for admission into the mainspace, but I just simply moved it into AfC because of the tag. Also, I am aware of the username violation and have already reported it. Cheers, Freebirds Howdy! 20:04, 20 February 2013 (UTC)
- That explains it: I didn't see (in that huge mess) that it was already marked. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 20:32, 20 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi Freebirds,
Thanks for helping out at AFC. When you move a page from a user's subpage to the WT:AFC subpage, you don't need to leave a {{db}} tag on the user's subpage. For one thing, it doesn't meet the criteria of WP:CSD#R2. For another, it might actually be useful to some editors, who might otherwise be confused where their article is. Please ask of you have any questions. --Floquenbeam (talk) 03:32, 21 February 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for your time to review my article, its been rejected by you and you said "This article needs cleanup and organization in order for it to be added." Can you please explain so that i can do what needs to be done to get the article published.. What sort of cleanup you mean, Thanks user: irajeevwiki — Irajeevwiki (talk • contribs) 05:30, 11 February 2013 (UTC)
- Hi irajeevwiki. First of all, let me express my sincere apologies for being unclear and ambiguous when declining your proposed article. Overall, the content looks solid, but the article has many grammatical and punctuation mistakes (as well as use of CAPS LOCK) that make the content somewhat difficult to read. A thorough copy edit of the article should suffice. Other than that, it seems like a well-written article. Keep up the good work! If you have any other questions regarding AfC or this article, please feel free to post here on my talk page. (PS - It seems that you made the same post twice on my talk page...so I'm deleting the second one and using this sole thread for communication.) Cheers, Freebirds Howdy! 12:36, 11 February 2013 (UTC)

- Hi irajeevwiki - I looked at the article and sent it in for approval, but unfortunately the article name "Thiyyar" has been blocked from being created. It looks as if the article was in the mainspace in April 2012, but was then deleted. According to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Thiyyar, it seems that the editors who commented on the deletion said that the Thiyyar caste is a fork of the Ezhava caste. Honestly, I don't know very much at all on the subject, and I'm sure you're quite knowledgeable on it (being that you wrote the article about it). I would read the AfD discussion linked above, and if you think think the editors were wrong in blocking the article from creation, tell me why and i'll be glad to send a message to an administrator to try to get your article created. Cheers, Freebirds Howdy! 15:54, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
- Hi Freebirds, Thiyya is a different caste from Ezhava, the only common thing between these two groups that they belong to Other Backward Communities in India. Thiyya has got different culture and history. I had a look ezhava wikipedia page and found many errors. Thiyyar is independent and they got their own culture and even they look different from Ezhava people. This link is from a book would tell you the difference, Thiyya people mainly living in Malabar in Kerala state. and Ezhava is living in Travancore region in Kerala. There are many links in my wikipedia article describing about thiyya. Thanks for your help and highly appreciated. Hi Freebirds, another user called Gwickwire just declined my article (reason is Cleanup ) I remember that you had checked my article and the only reason why we cant get this published was just because of the POV fork issue with "Ezhava" and we were communicating with Ezhava admin,. I had a look the communication between you and Ezhava admin and noticed that he / she is not responding to the messages you left in his talk page. Would you please advice me what i can do now to get this article published. This was my first article and i am bit desperate here. Spent a lot of time on this article. Thanks for your help, hope you can help to get this article published soon. Irajeevwiki (talk) 04:50, 3 March 2013 (UTC)
- Irajeevwiki, since I have not been able to get a response from Bwilkins (the admin who blocked the article back in April), the best option would be for me to ask for help from another admin. Tomorrow I will send the same message to another admin I know and maybe they can help you out. In the meantime, feel free to improve your article or even create another. If I know any more information, I will be sure to inform you here. Cheers, Freebirds Howdy! 05:37, 4 March 2013 (UTC)
SeekFast article
Hello Freebirds,
Just to ask you what reliable sources should I provide, in order the article about SeekFast to be approved?
Actually, the software has been tested and approved by the most authoritative software sites. It is also used by thousands of people worldwide. I am also using it for several years.
Thank you very much in advance, Dimitar Stamenov e-mail: pamir@abv.bg — Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.242.134.67 (talk) 14:05, 28 February 2013 (UTC)
- Hi Dimitar, and thank you for submitting your article. First of all, I would like to say that your article is very well-written and deserves a place on Wikipedia. My only concern was with the references. First, the references you have now I would list as External Links, since they are not cited in the article itself. Next, you want to add reliable sources to the article (these would include newspaper articles, magazines, news reports, etc. about SeekFast). Articles from blogs are OK as well, but just make sure they are reputable. After you have your sources, you want to use ref tags to cite them directly in the article. Other than that, everything else looks fantastic. If you have any other questions, or would like me to look over the article again, please feel free to leave a message here. Cheers, Freebirds Howdy! 23:10, 28 February 2013 (UTC)

New article for creation awaiting your feedback
Hi Freebirds, thank you for your time you took to review the first draft of Wikipedia article for Lindsay Levin. Stale drafts at AfC
Tevahine just wondered what happened to their draft: You un-submitted it from review with this edit because we had an older, stale, unrelated draft on the same subject at Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Ofer Zur. Firstly, the existence of another draft that isn't submitted for review at the same time is not a valid reason for declining a submission. Secondly, you didn't even notify Tevahine and left them with very little opportunity to determine what happened to their draft. I've given Tevahine a lengthy explanation, both of what happened and of why the draft can't be accepted in its current state, but I'd ask you to be a little more careful the next time you un-submit a draft without formally declining the submission - at the very least, please notify the author. Huon (talk) 02:50, 19 March 2013 (UTC)
- I apologize for my error, as I am not sure why I forgot to notify the article's author (I usually don't). However, I do have a question regarding the stale drafts. If, as in this case, there is more than one AfC submission with the same name, how do you handle such a situation? Cheers, Freebirds Howdy! 14:52, 19 March 2013 (UTC)
- If multiple drafts on the same topic are submitted simultaneously, I'd probably decline all but the best one as duplicates and tell the author(s) to consolidate them into a single draft. If, like here, there's an ancient, abandoned draft, my suggestion would be to ignore it and to review the new, currently submitted draft on its own merits without moving it to the occupied "WT:Articles for creation" location. An admin might merge page histories to combine the old draft's history with the new draft's content, but that's rather complicated, and I'm not sure summoning an admin is worth the effort. On the other hand, I believe the helper script doesn't really do well with userspace drafts, so merging histories once may be less trouble in the long run. Huon (talk) 16:50, 19 March 2013 (UTC)
