Thanks for the tips! and you know where I can find antique bolos? =)

edit

Hello Kurt :)

Thanks for the welcome and the tips (e.g., sizing of pics). Appreciate it!

Am a Phil. history enthusiast and I collect antique Phil. swords. I have two tenegres already (bought from the US) plus I have a sanduko coming (i.e., the blade of the Mondo tribe of Capiz). I also have a antique ginunting from Negros, plus a few other old Visayan blades.

Am mentioning this because I plan to write Wikipedia articles on these wonderful Visayan (Ilonggo) blades. Thus I'm wondering whether you know of any museum (aside from Museo Iloilo) that I can visit, where I can get more info, still in line with my plan to write articles about them.

Thanks again, and best wishes,

Lorenz Lasco Email: filhistory@gmail.com Mobile: +63.917.582-1208

PS - Am still feeling my way around here in Wikipedia editing stuff, etc. So please don't hesitate to scream ;) should you wish to point out something about anything.

PPS - Nice articles re Papa Isio, et al. I enjoyed a lot reading Vic Hurley's Swish of the Kris and Jungle Patrol, where I've come to know Papa Isio. Indeed there's a lot of history still to be written about the other Phil. heroes and characters of old.

Hello Lorenz, I'm not sure if the Negros Museum in Bacolod has any collections that include antique bolos, I haven't been there in ages and the last time I was there I don't recall seeing old native blades. But they may have some new items in there; it's been so long since I've been there. I recall attending an exhibit of WWII artifacts in SM Bacolod a while back and there were a few bolos there, but I'm sure they were of WWII vintage only and therefore quite modern.
If you have any questions about how to go about things in Wikipedia, just post here in my talk page, I'll be glad to help you out. You're right, there's still a lot of stuff buried in our history that need to come out. Happy editing and cheers! — KvЯt GviЯnЭlБ Speak! 11:40, 21 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hello :)

I'm new here in the world of Wikipedia editing (and I'm in Manila by the way). And my passion is collecting ethnic (antique and vintage) Philippine swords and knives. Thus my plan is to write as many articles as possible about them in Wikipedia, and use as photo references the ones in my collection (or any other legitimately available resources in the Internet).

So in case you need any pics or images, just please tell me and I'll find out if I have them, or alternatively where I think you can find them.

For one, this international ethnic swords and blades forum is a very good resource.

The antique Filipino ethic blades recently displayed for instance at the Macao museum exhibit came from the collectors in that forum.

Me ["migueldiaz", in that forum] and a few other Pinoys and Fil-Ams are active in that forum. Some of the threads there I contributed a lot are: Origin of the Kampilan?; Origin of the kalinga axe; and Of bolo rush & bolomen.

There's a lot of things to be rediscovered in the Philippines' past. And I thought that one area to focus on would be the wonderful world of Philippine blades.

And I hope that we can do some form of collaboration in developing articles related to those :)

Best wishes,

Lorenz Lasco Email: filhistory@gmail.com Mobile: +63.917.582-1208

ETHNIC FILIPINO SWORDS & WEAPONS UPLOAD BULLETIN

edit

Here's the updated gallery.

    • I've just uploaded the Krieger plates (photos) in Wikimedia Commons. For lack of an appropriate category at the moment, they can be found here. Herbert Krieger's The Collection of Primitive Weapons and Armor of the Philippine Islands in the United States National Museum (Smithsonian Institution; 1926: United States National Museum Bulletin No. 137) is an important reference in the study of Philippine swords. --Filhistorydotcom (talk) 23:36, 25 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
          • Negros-Panay tenegre and two lumad panabas blades, added. --Filhistory.com is my blog on Philippine ethnic weapons 13:36, 4 October 2009 (UTC)
            • A bunch of Luzon bolos (including Katipunan/KKK pieces) just added. --Filhistory.com is my blog on Philippine ethnic weapons 11:26, 23 October 2009 (UTC)
          • Central and Eastern Visayan talibongs (including Pulajanes pieces) added, as well as contemporary Western Visayan binangons. --Filhistory.com is my blog on Philippine ethnic weapons 14:34, 23 October 2009 (UTC)
        • Three pics of Yakan (Moro) Basilan piras added --Filhistory.com is my blog on Philippine ethnic weapons 15:06, 23 October 2009 (UTC)

Copy of Wikimedia Commons 'help me' message re swords categorization

edit

The original message is here:

Hello! :)

Am new around here and I've been uploading images of ethnic Filipino swords and weapons, and there's many more to come.

Earlier, I've uploaded pics to this existing category: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Weapons_of_the_Moro_people_of_the_Philippines

Later on, I myself created three new categories, for the other pics I have and will be uploading, namely:

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Weapons_of_the_Luzon_people_of_the_Philippines

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Weapons_of_the_Visayan_people_of_the_Philippines

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Weapons_of_the_Lumad_people_of_the_Philippines

With those four categories above, the ethnic swords and weapons of the entire Philippines would have already been all covered. By the way, lumad pertains to the non-Moro and original people of Mindanao.

Now the problem :) is this -- I want to put the Luzon, Visayan, and Lumad categories on the same footing or level as the Moro category. If it's confusing, all I want is that if someone is searching for media of ethnic Philippine weapons, then in one instance he or she should be able to see all four categories in one page, so that he or she has a clear idea of the four major grouping of Philippine weapons.

Later on, the Luzon category can have its own subcategories like Ilocano, Igorot, Kapampangan, Zambal, Tagalog, Bicol, etc.

And the Visaya can later on have its own subcategories also like Cebu, Panay, Negros, Samar, Leyte, etc.

Lumad can later on have subcategories such as Bagobo, T'boli, Manobo, Mandaya, B'laan, etc.

But for now, the four main categories (Luzon, VIsayas, Moro, and Lumad) ought to be structured such that they are all under the same level, and closely bunched up, so that it's easier for searchers to find the right image.

How do I go about doing this reordering of the categories?

Thanks in advance! =)

I've also uploaded the 1926 Krieger plates to this category: http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Category:Knives_of_the_Philippines
Now I'm thinking of removing this category, and I'll just transfer have to re-categorize all the images there, into the four major categories above, for simplicity. How do I remove a category? =) --Filhistory.com is my blog on Philippine ethnic weapons 11:25, 3 October 2009 (UTC)
