General approach

edit

My thoughts on this are basically, just be as good an editor as you can be, rather than doing specific things to prepare for adminship. The only difference is you'll have access to a couple new software features. The advice here is good, but I'd think of your goal as becoming an experienced and well-rounded editor, rather than preparing for being an admin, specifically. I was just seeing the necessity of being prepared if the time comes and being prepared at all. When I think I have at least a chance in an RfA I will contact my coaches to see if I'm ready, if that's all the advice you can give I'm trying to follow it the best way I can. So far so good

Alright, I've been looking this over. Looks pretty good. As someone who's an RC patroller, admin tools are quite handy. I see a lot of vandalism reverting and warning people, those are nice admin-type jobs you're already doing. One thing I'd suggest is something to demonstrate your understanding of policy. I'm putting in another question along those lines. Friday (talk) 01:07, 21 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Also, check out WP:ER - it's a way to get feedback on your editing from additional editors. Friday (talk) 01:10, 21 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

The answer to the new question looks good. I'm going to ask a question about deletion specifically, I think. I'm curious what your thoughts are. I wish there was an easy way to review the things you've speedy tagged, but when they're deleted, they won't show up in your contributions anymore. I think it would impress people if you could demonstrate you already have good judgment on deletions, since those tend to cause trouble when controversial things happen. Friday (talk) 15:14, 21 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

That was fast. To me, your answers show a good understanding of the roles of the various deletion options. If it were me personally, I'd say that things that are obviously junk but don't fit a CSD can still be "common sense speedied", but this is a personal choice. Sticking within the letter of the rules on speedy deletions certainly won't hurt. And, all things being equal, it's better for admins (at least at first) to be conservative in their use of the tools. Another way to demonstrate good judgment (in a way that can still be seen later) is to do some work at WP:DRV, if you haven't already. Anyway, to me it seems like you have a good amount of experience and familiarity with how things go here. People could perhaps criticize your edits for being frequently minor, but to me this is no problem. Minor edits will be common for someone who spends time reverting vandalism. Honestly, in my book, the admin tools are far more useful to those who spend lots of time on damage control than those who spend lots of time just writing great articles. (And, of course, both approaches are highly beneficial to the project.) Friday (talk) 16:18, 21 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

When were you thinking?

edit

When were you thinking of wanting to put your name in the hat? I see you signed up at WP:ER, that can't hurt. Once you've gotten results there, assuming you think everything is still ok, are you close to being ready for a nomination? At this point, based on edits and your answers, I think you're a good candidate. Also, I'm curious what DakotaKahn thinks. Friday (talk) 20:08, 21 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

I don't know, but probably in the near future. BTW, Dakota answers me by e-mail or on my talk page. Her latest comment can be seen when you click on the "hello", and both of you seemed to agree nicely on a peer review. Should someone tell her to use this page, to centralize discussion? The comment by Zero on my ER isn't very encouraging :) Fetofs Hello! 14:36, 22 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
Some people do put a lot of importance on having "enough" edits. Some people put importance on how long you've been around, too. By that standard, I don't think your six months looks low. Sometimes RFAs get a lot of "come back in a couple months and I'll support you" comments. If the only criticisms people have are not enough edits, you've done pretty well at RFA whether there's a promotion or not, IMO. Friday (talk) 18:22, 22 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
So... On your opinion, should I go for it? Fetofs Hello! 20:52, 22 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
Dakota says I should try to improve my talk count before that. I'll try... Fetofs Hello! 12:43, 25 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
That's a tough question. Waiting should only help your chances. I'd hate to recommend you try it and then have it not succeed; I'd feel that I'd given bad advice. The best I can say is this: If you were up for RFA right now, based on what I know, I would support. Friday (talk) 15:56, 25 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
