Image request

Well, looking at both the image and the discussion on the article's talk page, it seems that this particular is in violation of the NFCC policy. I don't think anyone argued that the event itself was not significant, but they did argue that the use of this non-free image did not increase the understanding of the readers' of the topic. Of all the editors who took part of the discussion, the only support for its inclusion was by the editor SusanLesch. In this instance, there are two instances of interpretation of the policy, yours and Tbhotch's. Consensus agreed with Tbhotch's analysis, so restoration of the file doesn't really seem like the greatest idea. — ξ^xplicit 19:42, 21 February 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for reviewing. Note that I have no problem with a consensus, even a bare minimum one like here, but the premises and substance for the the consensus seems to have been seriously flawed. As the list of 7 reasons (above link) used by Tbhotch and a few others explains, they all lacked support. Tbhotch relied on NFCC #8, stating "I, as a reader (and I bet that all readers will agree), only see two men shaking their hands. In any moment I feel my understanding of The Social Network increase just because they met each other."

So the end result was that the tagger simply used his personal opinion to prove that the image did not "significantly increase" his understanding, and then threw in some erroneous comments and sarcasm, to support it. Anyone not knowledgeable about or interested in an event could likewise say that this picture of two men shaking hands or this photo of a man stepping off a ladder, could have just as easily been described with words. Since you deleted the image, are you saying in effect that a consensus of 3 to 2 is enough to delete an image, even when that consensus was based on seemingly faulty premises? --Wikiwatcher1 (talk) 20:44, 21 February 2011 (UTC)

There's a big difference between the two images you linked and the image that I deleted—the latter was a non-free image, while the former are images that are freely licensed. The goal of Wikipedia is to use as much free content as possible, whether it be by the use of text or freely licensed files, which is why NFCC is strict. This is explained in depth at WP:NFC#Explanation of policy and guidelines. I didn't take headcount of the discussion, I weighed the strength of the arguments and made my decision based on that; the sarcasm is easily ignorable. • Many thanks. Having reviewed the article, and WP:PROD, and noting that my talk page was not notified to my memory, (my being the primary contributor); I would like the article undeleted. I would recreate the article, but that would mean that the history would disappear. The article contains a notability statement, being cited in a major documentary on advertising culture by John Pilger, a noted documentary director. Stage 3 of the PROD process advises that articles may be undeleted. Stage 4 of the nomination process advises contacting significant contributors. Had I been notified I would have objected. Hey Explicit:

I noticed you deleted the company page Dun & Bradstreet Credibility Corp for not being notable. While not an active Wikipedia user, I've been around Wikipedia long enough to know this was a danger with a new page, but felt this one should count as it is a fast growing, and well-funded, start up that has generated a decent amount of media coverage and I tried to document that on the page. What, if anything, could be done to reinstate the page?

In your first attempt, you didn't provide a proper license tag, so it was deleted on that basis. On your second attempt, you didn't upload a file at all, so that was deleted as an empty file. OK, after spending a good amount of time running down what happened here, I've finally figured it out. I uploaded this image and used it on Solar Dynamics Observatory. User:Hugahoody just recently uploaded an improved version of the graphic (File:EVE logo.png) and then replaced this file with his own.

My only real concern here is the lack of notification, and the lack of a timely reply to my query. Since it appears that this is not an isolated incident (based on User:Ipigott's complaint below), I'm contemplating taking this whole issue to WP:ANI. Regardless of whether or not I do that, I certainly don't appreciate all the trouble that you've caused, here. A bit more care in what you were doing could have easily avoided all of this.

I'm assuming you missed it, but at the very top of my user talk page it states: Explicit's activity on Wikipedia will be at an all time low for the following 15 weeks (thanks to school). Please do not expect timely responses. There are several other venues to ask for deletions, undeletions, protections, blocks, etc. That should explain my untimely response. As for the notifications, that's not the responsibility of the deleting admin, that would be the work of the tagger, in this case being Hugahoody. The user who tagged the file for deletion can leave a courtesy notice, but notification is not mandatory. I, among most users, do notify the uploader when tagging a file for deletion. Perhaps discussing the issue with Hugahoody and explaining that it would be courteous and beneficial to do the same could encourage them to notify users from now on. — ξ^xplicit 21:25, 7 March 2011 (UTC)

Hello Explicit. I am writing to you here first of all because I spent a considerable amount of time and trouble trying to implement the Fair Use procedures for this image and secondly because I can see no reason under F7 why the image should be deleted immedately without prior notification. As you probably know, there have recently been extensive discussions about FOP in Luxembourg but unfortunately without any solution. For this reason, after lengthy exchanges with user Jameslwoodward on Commons and user talk:Elekhh on Wikipedia, I thought I should try to justify Fair Use on this image of a recently built cultural centre in Luxembourg. It certainly seems to me to be justifiable as the architecture is innovative and in my opinion deserves representation in the form of a photograph. So perhaps you could be more explicit on why it was removed. Finally, I would like to draw your attention to the fact that the deletion only appeared on my log over the past hour or so, i.e. some 10 hours after it took place. In the meantime I have posted a request on User talk:Jameslwoodward which I could perhaps have avoided if I had known beforehand that you were behind the deletion. I have spent the last hour or so trying to get to the bottom of this. If the wrong tag was used in connection with my image, it is not surprising. Only after extensive searching (based on the possibiliity that the tag was the problem) did I find {{Non-free architectural work}} which would seem to be the right one to use. As I have explained on User talk:Jameslwoodward, I could find no guidance on Wikipedia as to how an image file on architecture should be uploaded. @Ipigott: For the notification issue, the file was automatically tagged with {{AutoReplaceable fair use buildings}} when you uploaded the image—hence, you didn't get a notification—presumably because you chose a replaceable fair use license. I wasn't aware that Luxembourg didn't have FOP, so that part is definitely a mistake on my part; I've restored the file. However, you're right that you didn't pick the best license, {{Non-free 3D art}} was technically incorrect as it's an image of architecture, not 3D art. The deletion not showing up on your watchlist until ten hours later... that seems to be a server issue, which is beyond the control of administrators.

@Hoary: I'm pretty sure all my deletions have a rationale based directly on policy, from expired prods to speedy deletions of redirects under G8 and so on. I fail to see exactly what's missing. I always explain my deletions if questions are asked, surely my talk page show this. I don't and have never felt obliged to perform all these actions, this is all volunteer work after all. — ξ^xplicit 21:25, 7 March 2011 (UTC)

Although many of the people who edit WP have very limited attention-spans or seem to be plain stupid, Ipigott doesn't appear to be among these (and neither do you). But let's suppose that irritation made him exaggerate, and that if he'd timed it more carefully and subtracted the time he spent pouring himself a cuppa, emailing a friend to say that editing Wikipedia was a mug's game, etc, he spent a mere 20 minutes. Even that would be far longer than the time you'd have needed to spend telling him what the problem was. So, a higher explanation-to-deletion ratio, please. Glad this has finally been sorted out. It all goes to show, I think, that the whole procedure for uploading Free Use images on the EN Wikipedia needs serious attention with a view to improvement and more "userfriendliness". The procedure for images of buildings seems particularly opaque but now I at least have one example in connection with Luxembourg (which, by the way, has no case history of copyright infringements relating to photos of buildings but only to those of outdoor sculptures). As for the tag which was attached to the original filing of Kinneksbond.JPG, to the best of my knowledge I did not add the autoreplaceable tag but when it appeared I noticed that it said explicitly "Do not remove this tag" - so I left it. From these discussions, it looks as if I should have removed it anyway. There was however another tag which unfortunately went unnoticed. I actually used File:Grande Arche de La Défense et fontaine.jpg as a kind of model, the rest was a result of the uploading process. I had less problems dealing with Fair Use images of paintings as the procedure and explanations here are much easier to follow. - Ipigott (talk) 09:30, 8 March 2011 (UTC)

Hello Explicit, I'm writing about your deletion of the Michael Koffler page. I understand your concerns re: notability, but in the New York education world (and beyond), he's a notable and somewhat controversial person as someone who has started all these private schools, many of them for children with autism, learning disabilities, etc. Someone else had already put up that article, but I just started putting up Wikipedia articles about some of the schools, and had linked to the article about him, and was planning on updating it when I get the time, so I think it would be good to restore it to give readers that information. According to you, the basis for this deletion had much to do with the possible controversy surrounding the individual, yet this is a limitation on free speech, among other things I could certainly cite. There are no restrictions on other controversial individuals such as Jeremiah Wright, or Muʿammar al-Qaḏḏāfī, and the list goes on and on. Please explain your reasoning and most importantly why you single out an individual. This to me show a bit of prejudice and is most certainly unfair. If we cannot resolve this I can and most certainly will take this to higher levels and have you dealt with as an editor on Wikipedia. Awaiting your response.......

Here are the guidelines for deletion as outlined by wikipedia. Nowhere in here does it state anything about "controversial" people or subjects. You need to learn them and respect them:

Removed article on Hallfield Preparatory school Edgbaston

Hi, before I express the reasons why I believe a page for Hallfield should be allowed, allow me to first express my gratitude for the work that you and many others put in to make wikipedia what it is today. A while back you removed an article I made about Hallfield school in the basis that prep schools should be treated no differently to primary schools. I created the article not to emphasis any superiority, but merely as a homage to the rich tradition of Hallfield. I noticed other prep schools such as The Dragon and Amesbury school (to name but a few) have pages dedicated to them, and I was wondering why you feel Hallfield does not deserve this. The school hosted President Clinton, when he landed in Birmingham for the G8 summit, and it sends its pupils to the top schools in the midlands year in year out without fail. Texicon

I noticed that you deleted the Texicon page. I was attempting to create it (I guess for the second time) as I had forgotten that I had created one already.

The note says that you deleted the page because it was a non-notable convention. I would argue that this is not true. There are no Table Top Gaming conventions in Texas. Moreover, there is a lot of discussion occurring about this convention on the web. The organizers seem to be offering a full convention that seems to beginning to be noticed. I would also note that there is a facebook page, that it advertised with Board Game Geek. There are also many blogs discussing it.

Moreover, since there are no other game conventions in this area, I would argue that it is a major convention. Had there been other conventions, then I would say not. A pail of water in the desert is like an ocean.

So, now that I remember trying to create a page. And having done so again by mistake. I would argue that this convention indeed needs to be represented in the list of conventions that occur in the region. I would also note that I did not publish the second one but asked for help and now I can't find it. Being the only convention in the area won't exactly be enough for an article on the subject to exist. In order for Texicon to merit inclusion on Wikipedia, it needs to meet the notability guideline. It was deleted because, at the upload form, you indicated that the file was tagged with a non-free license. Since the subject in the picture is an active, living person, it was automatically tagged as {{AutoReplaceable fair use people}}, indicating that a freely licensed image of the person exists or can be created. David Ramadan

You left a msg 'very spam-like wording' when you reverted my additions out of the David Ramadan page. The page as I found it was essentially a puff piece self promotion of a controversial politician. I've provided no self promotion to it, in fact I added the controversy sections because issues are being raised, both locally and nationally concerning this individual and have referenced it with what i believe to be valid 3rd party cites as compared to the self citing one of the page editors tries to restrict it too.

I would agree that my additions are controversial, but then again so is the subject. There has been no discussion, and that is probably because the subject person of the bio is using a paid media consultant to maintain it to his own desire and it would be a stretch to expect casual viewers (the presumed audience) to contribute where the 'active' interested parties are more consumed by the blogs relating to the subject. I certainly don't intend to fill this with blog cites or use it for an 'attack'. However, verifiable hypocritical political positions, blowing smoke, and consistent stonewalling of valid questions are a characteristic that should be addressed, more so when the subject (it is a bio) is clearly using self cites throughout picturing himself as as he wishes to be pictured. I am a noob to Wikipedia, so If you can suggest how I can address your concerns without compromising the subject matter (controversies and honesty) I'll do my best to comply. My concern is that the other editor seems dedicated to removing changes rather than addressing and resolving issues. I don't intend to recruit ersatz editors to support my view since I don't have a dog in the political fight, but given what I've seen in the blogs, the subject of this page has no problem financing paid agents to accomplishing his ends. You added lines like Allegiance IS A MAJOR CONCERN regarding a candidate professing to be a ‘proud American living the American Dream” now trying to become a member of the Virginia House of Delegates who would make our laws and Another not so unbiased source adds to the complexity of the controversy surrounding Mr. Ramadam, by contributing a backhanded defense article David “Go GOP” Ramadan Fails To Make Himself Less Repulsive. Wikipedia articles are to be written in a neutral point of view, and these lines are far from it. Also, "the subject person of the bio is using a paid media consultant to maintain it to his own desire" is quite a claim. Is there any evidence backing up this claim, or are there any accounts/IP addresses which seem to be editing in such a style? Although there is no policy forbidding such editing, it does become a problem when conflicts of interests arise. Deletion discussions are closed based on the weight of the arguments, not the head count of keeps versus deletes. The initiator of the discussion argued that the screenshot did not have any contextual significance as required by the non-free content criteria, as it does not increase the readers' understanding of the article. As Bkell also pointed out, the poster does a fine job at showing that Jared Leto gained weight for the role, which was the purpose of this image. WP:CSD#F9 reads: Obviously non-free images [...] that are not claimed by the uploader to be fair use. All the images you tagged are licensed with {{Non-free television screenshot}}, so they automatically don't meet F9 at all. If they were tagged as being released under the public domain, for example, when they are clearly copyrighted screenshots, then they would be eligible for deletion under F9. You're right to point out that they do fail NFCC, and all the files were already tagged with {{di-replaceable fair use}} a few hours before your speedy deletion requests. Both files were tagged with {{di-replaceable fair use}}. They were screenshots of staff (from what I can get from the captions, anyways) and specifically failed the first point of the non-free content criteria. The Pets - deleted page on the basis of no national radio play

I am a member of The Pets music group from Steinbach, Manitoba. I would like to request the reactivation of our The Pets Wikipedia page. It appears that anonymity is required (24.150.19.83 (talk) 21:59, 2 September 2011 (UTC)) so I will not post my name here.

Surprisingly, we received quite a bit of national and international radio play initially. We charted in top 10 college charts in Canada, USA, Belgium, and other countries as well. I remember being quite excited by all of the press that we were generating worldwide. We were released on major music magazine Beikoku Ongaka (literally Foreigner Music - "in Japan") on a compilation CD with other indie acts from around the world. We had worldwide distribution and I still receive royalty checks from publishing and sales every year from Endearing Records and Publishing.

I was hoping you would reconsider your decision to delete our band account. I know there has been no notable recent activity, but that is true of many bands found on Wikipedia. It would mean a lot to myself and others in the band to see our band restored on Wikipedia.

Census image deletions

I see you deleted several of my census images "per discussion", but I see no discussion or a notification of me, the person who uploaded them. The most appropriate thing to do would be to move them to commons, if they are no longer used as references in the articles. You never confirmed if they were truly orphaned, the article Edward S. The nominator of all those images was Fastily (talk · contribs), so I would suggest contacting him in regards to the lack of notifications. They were all listed in Wikipedia:Files for deletion/2011 September 7 and not one editor opposed their deletion, so they were deleted by default. Additionally, the description pages did list all the images as not being displayed in any articles, and pipe-linking images does not change the fact they are orphaned. Unlinking bad

Hi, I reverted two of your redlink unlinks before I realised you were an administrator. Some of those redlinks resulted from a mass deletion concerning a user's questionable editing, see here and here. It's left quite a mess and my intention is to minimise the follow-on damage. Hi there. The article Eric Griffin was proposed for deletion by another editor with the rationale "No indication of how this might meet notability guidelines. Lacks citations to significant coverage in reliable sources", which went uncontested for seven days. After that, it was deleted by me. In this case, a simple request to have the page restored will suffice, so I have done so. Please be aware that it may still be nominated for deletion through the articles for deletion process, a consensus-based venue. I´m getting pretty tired of trying to help improving Wikipedia.

I waste too much time trying to do the right thing here. Recently I find perfectly legitimate contributions of albums deleted by you. Album covers are okay to upload at Wikipedia. You know that. Also info about albums. And there was no doubt that the albums you deleted were official ones, released on several labels around the world. You did NOT bother to improve. You preferred to delete useful info for other people.

I don't want to waste more time here. I will report you to the appropriate places and delete all material I have added to Wikipedia.

The articles were deleted because another editor proposed their deletions because they failed the notability guidelines for albums. These proposed deletions went uncontested for seven days and were routinely deleted. The burden of verifying that the topic is notable lies with the editor(s) interested in having the articles kept, not anyone else. Wikipedia could be a great place to share information. Ever stopped to think that some people might be interested in helping out with info, without being interested in living our lives here to constantly monitor our contributions so that narcissistic administrators/editors don't delete them. If this place is about info, why doesn't the editors spend their time improving pages instead of deleting them? It certainly doesn't motivate "normal" people to contribute. My contributions' accuracy isn't very hard to verify for anyone interested. Unfortunately there's obviously no interest to improve. You and your "editor" friends seem much more interested in removing than improving. May I suggest you get the rest of the info about the band Evil Masquerade deleted as well. At least the albums. There are still 2 left. And those are presented exactly the same way as the other 2 that got deleted after several years online. I tried to delete them for you but unfortunately it couldn't be done. I've already contacted the band and they aren't interested in being at Wikipedia with incomplete material so they prefer to be completely deleted. Dear xplicit. I still don't understand why you don't delete the rest of Evil Masquerade's discography??? If you consider the 2 albums you removed to be rightfully deleted, then remove the other 2 as well. They must be just as wrong. Otherwise reverse what shouldn't have been deleted. Rescaled fair use images and the job queue

The reason the number of images in Category:Rescaled fairuse images more than 7 days old is because I null edited the parent category last night before the bot added a thousand images. In doing so, I found some images tagged since 24 and 25 September. In light of this, do you think we should convert the rescaled fair use images to date-based categories like CAT:NS? — Train2104 (talk • contribs • count) 21:42, 9 October 2011 (UTC)

I don't really see the need. The files will eventually show up in Category:Rescaled fairuse images more than 7 days old, and I personally don't see too much harm in the images waiting a few extra days to have their larger scaled revisions to be deleted. — ξ^xplicit 21:49, 9 October 2011 (UTC)

Hi, I'm a newly-appointed admin, so I need to be sure that I'm doing the right thing before deletion. Consider File:Phila FLP Wyoming00.png - this has been tagged {{db-author}} by its uploader, but there are two intervening bot edits. Is G7 a valid criterion, or would those bot edits fall outside "the only substantial content to the page and to the associated talk page was added by its author"? (there is a better version on commons at File:Phila FLP Wyoming02.jpg but WP:CSD#F8 doen't apply because one is a PNG, the other JPEG). Thanks. --Redrose64 (talk) 19:15, 15 October 2011 (UTC)

The file is still eligible for deletion under G7. Bots generally only make edits dealing with maintenance, so they tend to be minor edits that don't contribute enough to be considered substantial. Another Black Day (album)

I saw the reason the page was deleted but the band was a real band and the page could have helped each member as we're all working on other projects. I'm Angel Hernandez, the drummer for that band and most of us have branched off into other projects and I was going to update that page with said info. If there is any way at all the band page can be reinstated that would be amazing and greatly appreciated. If there's anything at all I can do on this matter please let me know. If the band isn't notable, then the album will likely be equally as non-notable. So, the first thing that needs to be done is to verify that the band meets the guideline for notability about bands and musicians. A quick search for information regarding the band seems to be very minimal... a few drive-by mentions, but I'm afraid I can't find anything substantial enough that makes them appear notable. — ξ^xplicit 20:04, 17 October 2011 (UTC)

Howitzer shelling of Sirte

Please explain to me the reason you deleted the image. The person who nominated it for deletion stated that Free images can be found. Photo doesn't illustrate a historical event. Both of these statements were untrue. There are no, I repeat, no free images of the battle of Sirte. All existing images come from media outlets. The second issue....how is this not a historical event? The fall of the birthplace of Moamar Gaddafi in the civil war, last battle of the war, battle ending the war, and battle during which Gaddafi was killed. Tell me how that is not of historic value? Not to mention the shelling of Sirte was one of the more notable parts of the battle, since the city has now been devasted to ruble because of it, and thus the image was representing that part of the battle. Question about references and nobility guideline for music

An article I'm contributing to, M.I.B (South Korean group), was tagged about its references and not meeting with nobility guideline for music. Is Allkpop not a good source to use as references? It is the only site that I know that write about Korean music in English. It also says that the article was written like an advertisement.
