Conflict of interest edit

Hello, Eupterraen. It seems possible, from your username and your edits, that you may have a conflict of interest. May I courteously suggest you read WP:CONFLICT before making any further, similar, edits? Thanks. If you want to discuss this, please reply below and I will see it. Tony Holkham (Talk) 00:23, 22 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hello Tony,
My apologies, I have been citing my website primarily because I write a lot of biology-orientated articles. It crosses my mind at times that what I write might not be yet on wikipedia since it is usually less common knowledge.
I can remove anything I have edited if need be, or just stop citing my webpage articles.
My username is basically the same as my site, just a convenience factor for me :)
Let me know if you want me to make any changes. I did not wish to disturb any wiki articles I delved into. I do feel rather an amateur at this compared to some.

@Eupterraen: Thanks for responding, Charlene. There is no reason why you cannot make the edits you want to if you can find independent, published, sources to go with them. Citing your own work as a reference is not encouraged. However, I hope you will carry on editing, as Wikipedia needs new editors.
Please remember (a) to sign your posts on talk pages with four tildas (~~~~), which produces your signature and date stamp, and (b) indent each comment on a talk page with one more colon than the previous one, so the thread is easy to follow.
By the way, you can always mention your website on your user page (see the tabs at the top).
If you need any help with editing, just let me know at User talk:Tony Holkham. All the best, Tony Holkham (Talk) 16:46, 22 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
Thanks Tony,
I can see why citing one's own page is not encouraged even if the sources for my pages are independent. I'll be careful of that. I have not ever really used this talk page. I'll check out those tabs up top to see if that is a good idea to put my webpage link up there!
Thanks for your help with editing, your pointers are appreciated. I hope to add to wiki's community of editors from time to time when I can!

If the sources on your website are independently published, can you not cite those directly in the Wikipedia article(s)? That should avoid a conflict of interest. Tony Holkham (Talk) 12:58, 23 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
I could for some Tony, however, others are sources that are only in written (book) format. I am citing them on my website and pulling the information from books/ethnographies/research studies. I could try and find it elswhere online, it may be possible.

Citing books is fine (but not self-published books, usually). Use this format:
<ref>{{cite book|publisher=|author=|title=|date=|page=|isbn=|url=|accessdate=}}</ref>
Each = sign should be followed by the relevant information (only using the url and accessdate if the book is online, such as in Google books or similar). Date is the year of publication.

By the way, please remember to sign your posts on talk pages with four tildas (~~~~). Your proper username will appear if you are signed in to Wikipedia. Tony Holkham (Talk) 20:32, 23 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
Ah, that explains why my name was not appearing. I was not signed in. Sure, I'll use that book format to cite these references. That is much more direct. I will read over "sources to cite" in the contributor's notes sections to make sure I know what even needs citing to begin with.

May 2016 edit

Please do not add promotional material to Wikipedia. While objective prose about beliefs, organisations, people, products or services is acceptable, Wikipedia is not intended to be a vehicle for soapboxing, advertising or promotion. Thank you. --Ronz (talk) 17:20, 22 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hello Ronz,
I know I made a couple edits recently regarding scorpions and alternative cancer treatment from their venom. I did not think I placed promotional material in any of these edits. Was there something specific I should change? I understand, and have been informed just the other day, that I should avoiding citing my website pages for reference material to information even if my website page is itself based off of independent sources.
Let me know if I should take anything down. I would be happy to do so if need be.

Thanks for responding. You may have not noticed, but all your edits have been removed. The editors that removed them should have notified you, so I went ahead and did it myself. In my opinion, the edits appear to be promotion for the website, violating a large number of Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. --Ronz (talk) 16:18, 23 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
Ah, thanks for telling me, and for removing my edits, too, for me if they are not correct. I did not think at the time that my reference my webpage was considered a violation, but will avoid it now. I appreciate you pointing this out to me early on before I thought to continue this.
