Red Swastika Society

hey Erudy -- nice work on Red Swastika Society. I saw it go through an AfD not long ago and was dismayed to see it go, but didn't have time to work on it. Glad to see it's back. By the way, I fixed the footnotes -- they didn't autonumber; I did them manually since it's the only way I know. best, Bikeable 02:30, 11 December 2005 (UTC).

Several Collaboration Articles

American University in Cairo. Thank you for not reverting entirely. Important info, especially of interest to US audience, are now lost. --Connection 23:21, 10 March 2006 (UTC)

  • I wanted the reader to know the name of new locations, as New Cairo (it is a name, not qualification, like New York, yet it is a suburb of the Cairo Conglomerate).
  • I wanted the US faculty to know it is not a tenure career to travel to teach at the AUC.
  • The AUC has several accredited Engineering programs. Yet these are not the typical set a University would provide. Now the Article says it doesn’t have any Engineering program at all!
  • I wanted to present the fact that Egypt's High Board of Universities is the accrediting body. Now this info is lost.
  • Also that it has to comply to two separate governance systems, the US and Egypt.
  • The movie in question is a simple entry. It should depict (in the director and producer POV) life inside the AUC campus and had created a significant reactions the time it was on. The AUC started to file a lawsuit. Howerver, in a PR move, the new AUC President, at the time, Pr Gerhart (not sure of spelling), has invited Heneidy (the title figure) in a public event on campus. In this context now, what needs to be clarified?

Finally, I create Sections within the article even at the moment there is not plenty of info. It invites other users to contribute. --Connection 23:21, 10 March 2006 (UTC)

Re your additions (User_talk:Connection#AUC). Thanks. More satisfactory now. ----Connection 21:04, 11 March 2006 (UTC)

La Caixa. (One of your Articles). Do you know that it means cash-box or pay-desk in Catalan? I checked the Article in the Catalan section. It is deceivingly short. It doesn't reflect the presence of this institution in Catalan Spain, and also in other parts especially Balearic Islands. It also finances social projects. I wish I had the time to write all this in Catalan.  ;) --Connection 23:21, 10 March 2006 (UTC)

InterWiki Stuff. Have you an idea how to refer (ie, using tags) to an Article in a diffent language within the body of the main Article? Thanks. --Connection 23:21, 10 March 2006 (UTC)

Request in translations

Hi Erudy - nice work on Spanish translations; a small request, when doing pages relevant to Spain (rather than Latin America), e.g. your recent translation of Euphorbia atropurpurea , please use British English spellings (metre, colour, etc), as that is the form of English used as a second language in Spain (see Wikipedia:Manual of Style#National varieties of English) - thanks, MPF 11:28, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

Hawaii/Hawaiʻi

Hello. I fear there may be a backlash. Perhaps you would like to join me in supporting 'Hawaii' for the state & island group & 'Hawaiʻi' for the Big Island. It's an issue that has been going on for much longer than the month I've been following it, & this does seem the most sensible compromise. Rothorpe 17:02, 6 September 2007 (UTC)

Hello

Hello and thanks for voting on the Balti talk page. Just out of curiosity, how did you learn of this voting? I would like to participate in similar votings, but I guess there is no other way to know about them, unless someone informs you personally or there is a site or a robot that controls these votings somehow? Thanks for the answer. Moldopodo (talk) 17:44, 17 November 2007 (UTC)Moldopodo

Question

We have apparently decided to move the page. It seems to me there is a different debate now on whether we put Balti (with reference to the Balti (disambiguation) the top of the page, as the English Wikipedia standard requires (please see my arguments and examples on the Bălţi talk page) or Balti, Moldova (it is not clear to me why). Your feedback is more than welcome. Thanks for your time Moldopodo (talk) 01:51, 19 November 2007 (UTC)Moldopodo

Martín Caballero

Hey. Of course I noted your comment and evidence. English-language news sources often leave out accents in their coverage, which often differs from our practice especially in the more simple cases. What was important in this discussion was that the creator and only major editor of the article wanted it moved, and had already used "Martín" in the article itself. Thanks, Prolog (talk) 00:20, 25 November 2007 (UTC)

Links to dab pages

While editing SMS Königsberg (1905), you recently restored a link to Britain, a disambiguation page. You may wish to know that links in Wikipedia articles are not supposed to point to disambiguation pages. They're supposed to link to relevant articles. You can find the guideline here. There is currently a project underway to eliminate links to disambiguation pages. You can find out about it here. The link to ukgbi is a redirect to United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, a perfectly valid way to link to that article that improves performance by using fewer bytes and saves excess typing. Please try to avoid creating links to disambiguation pages.

Thank you for your kind attention, and happy editing.

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Bakken picture.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Bakken picture.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 21:55, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

Hi Erudy

I'm an original translator from Gaspar Yanga article in spanish, and I start it translating it from the English version, the one that you began almost two years ago, I notice time ago that you request to the webmaster of another site, for the rights of the picture, and it was given to you, but I tried to post it in the spanish version and it seems that doesn't work, I don't know how to put it in commons, do you?, because I think it needs to be there, so in that way other wikipedias can add it to them articles, I don't really sure, because I never have upload any picture at all in commons, if it does so, can you do it?, maybe I can Find it later, or it may need to be done anything else?, thanks.

Speedy deletion of Image:First Ons Heemecht Venue.jpg

A tag has been placed on Image:First Ons Heemecht Venue.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I8 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is available as a bit-for-bit identical copy on the Wikimedia Commons under the same name, or all references to the image on Wikipedia have been updated to point to the title used at Commons.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on [[ Talk:Image:First Ons Heemecht Venue.jpg|the talk page]] explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you. Sdrtirs (talk) 23:19, 19 August 2008 (UTC)

Bill Ayers photo

FYI, he never stated anywhere that he was willing to release it to the public domain. One simply cannot assume he does unless he explicitly states it. Although I'm handling the OTRS ticket, I'm going to have to temporarily tag the photo for deletion until I get an explicit statement from him. Sorry. howcheng {chat} 17:47, 13 October 2008 (UTC)

Hi Erudy- I want to commend you for your effort on obtaining the photos of Bill Ayers. I think that you informed him of the photos release to the pubic domain in your email and he responded in the affirmative in his rely: "Hey--- I couldn't find the photo submission page, but these are both mine, one at the U, one with my grand daughter. Use them if you want to. Best, Bill". Please obtain an explicit statement if necessary. Thanks, IP75 (talk) 19:19, 13 October 2008 (UTC)
IP75, no that's not an explicit enough statement. I reject those kinds of statements at OTRS all the time. howcheng {chat} 19:45, 13 October 2008 (UTC)
Hi Erudy- I just wanted to know if you have requested and received the required release statement from Bill Ayers. I asked Howcheng how it should be worded and he said somthing like "Yes, I agree to release these to the public domain." I would be happy to follow up on this if you would like me to. Please advise, IP75 (talk) 22:22, 14 October 2008 (UTC)
This is the email I sent to Mr Ayers the night of 14 October:
Dear Professor Ayers,
Thank you very much for your help! As you can see here, your photo has been posted to your article. Unfortunately, this is only temporary unless you explicitly affirm that you own the image and release it into the public domain. Wikipedia strives to use only free content, and in the case of images this means that they are only accepted when they have been clearly donated to the public domain. Basically, I've been told by administrators that our exchange (below) wasn't clear enough for legal purposes. To be absolutely in the clear, and to keep the current photo from being removed from the article, we need a affirmation that you
1) Are the owner of the work
2) Release it in to the public domain, where it can be used for any purpose, including commercial and derivative uses
Again I'd like to thank you for your contributions and assistance to our project, and apologize for having to bother you over this legal fine print. This sort of thing can be a bit frustrating to work through, but it does help maintain the integrity of the project.
Sincerely,
Wikipedia editor Erudy

Image permission problem with Image:Yanga1.jpg

Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:Yanga1.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the image (or other media file) agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the GFDL or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the image to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the image has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the image's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Images lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Moonriddengirl (talk) 13:53, 21 December 2008 (UTC)

Image copyright problem with File:Joseph Paul-Boncour from the Bundesarchiv.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Joseph Paul-Boncour from the Bundesarchiv.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the copyright status of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. Even if you created the image yourself, you still need to release it so Wikipedia can use it. If you don't indicate the copyright status of the image on the image's description page, using an appropriate copyright tag, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you made this image yourself, you can use copyright tags like {{PD-self}} (to release all rights), {{self|CC-by-sa-3.0|GFDL}} (to require that you be credited), or any tag here - just go to the image, click edit, and add one of those. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided copyright information for them as well.

Proposed deletion of La Imperial (restaurant)

The article La Imperial (restaurant) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

only indication of notability is award from non-notable New West Magazine

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Griseum (talk) 01:04, 24 July 2010 (UTC)

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of National Archives of Spain, and it appears to be a substantial copy of http://departments.oxy.edu/urc/projects/abstracts/2005/05historyHa.htm.

It is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article. The article will be reviewed to determine if there are any copyright issues.

If substantial content is duplicated and it is not public domain or available under a compatible license, it will be deleted. Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting

I've adjusted the appearance of the Killed/Wounded list that you came up with. I wanted to integrate the list more into the appearance of the article text, to try to make a little less bulky perhaps?, so removed the bolding and tweaked some of the font sizes. I also added "Casualties" as a title. If you or anyone wants to change it back, that's fine with me. Shearonink (talk) 07:12, 2 February 2013 (UTC)

Heh, looks like I'm the only one who got warned for the 'Listing box'. I still think it's a great improvement over what was there before, I have no idea what is wanted in its place or whatever...you can probably make much more sense of Toddst1's post re:MOS:MARKUP on the article's talk page. But I'll go ahead and check on similar boxes, see what the markup looks like on them...heh, I might not be able to code worth a darn starting from nothing but I sure as heck know how to lift it from other articles. Cheers, Shearonink (talk) 00:53, 3 February 2013 (UTC)

Hey

take a look at another Victims' list I came up with for Sandy Hook....trying to make the coding simpler and the list less obtrusive... User:Shearonink/List. Shearonink (talk) 02:14, 3 February 2013 (UTC)

Take a look! Let me know what you think! Thanks, Shearonink (talk) 02:22, 3 February 2013 (UTC)
I don't completely grasp what User:Toddst1 issue was. That's a level of coding savy above mine. If you understand the problem and are fixing it, go for it! I have two concerns about your proposal: first, in the "live" list, the words are smaller (I believe they're set at 75%). I think that makes it look better, and addresses some of the concerns on the talk page. The other (minor) concern: are we getting rid of the ages on the list? Erudy (talk) 02:29, 3 February 2013 (UTC)
One more concern: the background color of the new list. I think the greyish background of the "live" list is preferable.Erudy (talk) 02:36, 3 February 2013 (UTC)
The concern seems to be the amount of coding that was in our/your/the version that Toddst1 restored back into the article, with the all the <divs>, <fontstyle>s, <divstyle>s and so on... I lifted a list from Bath School and worked off of that...the coding looks a lot simpler... Apparently, if there's too much coding and markup within a page, in its boxes and so on, older browsers and mobile devices can have issues processing the internal workings of that article. Shearonink (talk) 02:46, 3 February 2013 (UTC)
Oh, sorry, to directly address your questions...
  • The ages...I think stating that people were staff or that people were school children or the perpetrator/his mother, is enough detail. If the ages are included as italics (and believe me, I fooled around with different sizes etc) italicizing them almost makes them appear larger...because they are sitting on their sides a little bit.
  • I'll toggle the sizes of the lettering on my /List (trying to keep in mind the twin considerations of coding and visibility/perceived obtrusiveness)
  • I'll try to put that grey background in my /List and will post back here when I am done. Shearonink (talk) 02:51, 3 February 2013 (UTC)

Still working on it...having trouble getting the background color to be a color....also, I *do *have it coded to make the letters smaller, but I'm working with the Wiki-markup for tables and I can't get it to work.... Auuuuuugh. Shearonink (talk) 03:16, 3 February 2013 (UTC)

DONE. If you're still up, take a look. Shearonink (talk) 04:34, 3 February 2013 (UTC)
Just placed it within the article. Other than the ages being removed in this version, people probably won't notice...follows the version you had in the article but without as much of the code... Shearonink (talk) 06:01, 3 February 2013 (UTC)

Feedback needed on using special characters

Hello. Thank you for using VisualEditor! Having editors use it is the best way for the Wikimedia Foundation to develop it into the best tool it can be.

While we always welcome general feedback (please report any issues in Bugzilla in the "VisualEditor" product or drop your feedback on the central feedback page on MediaWiki.org), the developers are especially interested right now in feedback on the special character inserter. This new tool is used for inserting special characters (including symbols like , IPA pronunciation symbols, mathematics symbols, and characters with diacritics). It is intended to help people whose computers do not have good character inserters. For example, many Mac users prefer to use the extensive "Special Characters..." tool present at the bottom of the Edit menu in all applications or to learn the keyboard shortcuts for characters like ñ and ü.

The current version of the special characters tool in VisualEditor is very simple and very basic. It will be getting a lot of work in the coming weeks and months. It does not contain very many character sets at this time. (The specific character sets can be customized at each Wikipedia, so that each project could have a local version with the characters it wants.) But the developers want your ideas at this early stage about ways that the overall concept could be improved. I would appreciate your input on this question, so please try out the character inserter and tell me what changes to the design would (or would not!) best work for you.

The "insert" pulldown on the task bar of VisualEditor will lead you to the '⧼visualeditor-specialcharacterinspector-title⧽' tool.

This is the ⧼visualeditor-specialcharacterinspector-title⧽ inserter as it appears on many wikis. (Some may have customized it.) Your feedback on this tool is particularly important.

Issues you might consider:

  • How often do you normally use Wikipedia's character inserters?
  • Which character sets are useful to you? Should it include all 18 of the character sets provided in the wikitext editor's newer toolbar at the English Wikipedia, the 10 present in the older editor toolbar, or some other combination of character sets?
  • How many special characters would you like to see at one time?
    • Should there be a "priority" or "favorites" section for the 10 or 12 characters that most editors need most often? Is it okay if you need an extra click to go beyond the limited priority set?
    • How should the sections be split up? Should they be nested? Ordered?
    • How should the sections be navigated? Should there be a drop-down? A nested menu?
  • The wikitext editor has never included many symbols and characters, like and . Do you find that you need these missing characters? If the character inserter in VisualEditor includes hundreds or thousands of special characters, will it be overwhelming? How will you find the character you want? What should be done for users without enough space to display more than a few dozen characters?
  • Should the character inserter be statically available until dismissed? Should it hover near the mouse? Should it go away on every selection or 10 seconds after a selection with no subsequent ones?
  • Some people believe that the toolbar already has too many options—how would you simplify it?

The developers are open to any thoughts on how the special character inserter can best be developed, even if this requires significant changes. Please leave your views on the central feedback page, or, if you'd prefer, you can contact me directly on my talk page. It would be really helpful if you can tell me how frequently you need to use special characters in your typical editing and what languages or other special characters are important to you.

Thank you again for your work with VisualEditor and for any feedback you can provide. I really do appreciate it.

P.S. You might be interested in the current ideas about improving citations, too. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 00:20, 18 February 2014 (UTC)
