Hi Elfer,
I'm in the process of writing a caption for this picture, to appear on Wikipedia:Picture of the day. However, I'm struggling to find good material from the general deer article. Do you have any more information on this fawn and its mother? For example do you know the location of the forest and can you describe the colouring of the mother (mentioned on FPC).
It seems that several species of deer have spotted fawns, even when the adults don't have spotted coats. I'm thinking it may be a Roe deer, which acording to this website shows a distinct line of white spots down the back. See also this picture that shows a younger roe deer fawn. However, I'm not sure whether this line of spots is unique to Roe deer.
By the way, I noticed that several of the comments on WP:FPC mentioned the lack of red in the original picture. Judging from the EXIF data on the original picture, it looks like the problem was probably that the camera was left with its white balance set to 'Tungsten'. -- Solipsist 13:42, 11 November 2005 (UTC)
- Hi, you recently asked me for some details about the picture so you could write a better caption. The picture was taken at the forest surrounding Desert Lake in southeastern Ontario, Canada. I'm not really an expert on deer, but this was, in fact, the second time I had seen this deer, the previous time being when it was in the same area with its mother and sibling. I can't recall the mother's colouring from memory, but I do have a few pictures from that time that I could try to dig up, so you'd have a visual you could use to determine which exact species it is.
- About the lighting in the original: Yeah, several people use the same camera that I do, so the lighting setting is often inappropriate for the situation due to absent-mindedness. I am getting better at remembering it though.

- That helps, but I still don't think I can get to a definate identification of it being a Roe Deer fawn. Which is a bit of shame, because they apparently have an unusual gestation in which the mother can hold on to a fertilised egg over winter before becoming pregnant at the right time in the spring.
- In any case, I had better play it safe and stick with the fairly generic caption I've got at the moment. The picture is up for Pic of the Day tomorrow and so should also appear on the Main Page. You can check and correct the current caption and credit at Wikipedia:Picture of the day/November 13, 2005 (and Wikipedia:Today's second feature/November 13, 2005, but that's the Main Page version and needs an admin to help edit it).

Regarding your keep vote on the AfD: I encourage you to come to the arguement for undeletion and support the arguement, so that we can bring this article back legally, so to speak.
