Welcome!

Hello, Elayne Adamczyk Harrington, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions.

I noticed that one of the first articles you created or edited was Wikipedia:Teahouse, which appears to be an article about yourself. Writing about yourself is a common mistake made by new Wikipedians.

As this is an encyclopedia, we wouldn't expect to have an article about every contributor. We require individuals to meet Wikipedia's definition of a notable person to accept articles about them. A page you created about yourself may well be deleted from the encyclopedia. If it is deleted and you wish to retrieve its contents, don't hesitate to ask anyone from this list and they will copy it to your user page.

If your contributions to an existing article about yourself are undone and you wish to add to or change it, please propose the changes on its talk page.

Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your messages on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically insert your username and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or ask your question on this page and then place {{help me}} before the question. Again, welcome! @SuperMarioOdyssy101 hey, sorry I didn't reply. I overlooked the msg as I am just getting used to this format. I didn't create a page of myself... someone else did though, after I made an enquiry regarding if it was deemed professional. As per your advice, I quickly learned it is frowned upon, and I got an aversion to the idea since I only wished to pursue it if it was proper. Some interesting conversations have been happening since my query and the page creation. Wikipedia is a very cool place. actually... Elayne Adamczyk Harrington (talk) 00:14, 25 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
I see you have a profile, kinda... I don't know how to build mine. Perhaps I have to begin contributing to Wikipedia? I would like to edit a page... was thinking Irish Hiphop would be a good place to start. In the future I am thinking of creating a page for an artist who does not feature, yet has credentials and is internationally renowned. An article about you

edit

Hello! I will try to make one, I think I have found the sources (WP:GNG) to make an article about you "stick." I should get it done in a week or so, WP is my hobby. Feel free to mention any brilliant sources about you that could help. And if you like, take a look at WP:A picture of you. You can reply here, I'm watching this page (not 24/7). Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 07:20, 23 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Oh hi, that's really cool. Nice to meet you... cool username. Obviously, I am a fan of poetry and wordplay.
I wrote back on the original thread... I shared two of my website links and I explained how I am trying to compile past media coverage for posterity.
https://misselayneous.com/interviews
+
https://misselayneous.com/news-archives
I have been on TV (interviews, performances, reality shows + documentaries), radio, a short film, a theatre production and had my single used for a Guinness national bursary advertisement as well as featuring in it, but I don't find any newspaper/article coverage of it.
I will keep digging and refining my categories of coverage and send you more.
P.S. Indeed, I will review the photo criteria and get back to you with an appropriate photo.
Thanks a lot...
Cool hobby btw, although I may have had my time to shine as a snotnose essentially underground rapper, I am a secondary school teacher now, so my focus is on pedagogy and my visual art practice - I love all things academic, so, respect on your WP avocation. Elayne Adamczyk Harrington (talk) 08:07, 23 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Here are a couple of WP-stories I like, maybe you will too:[1][2] Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 09:19, 23 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the reads - oh, that reminds me...

edit

Thank you. Reading the first one now... That reminds me, I found a bunch of articles that officially cover the Guinness bursary advertisement I told you about. I also have a suitable photo and copyright permission... Elayne Adamczyk Harrington (talk) 14:15, 23 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

I've got one here:[3]. I'm starting to see something of a royal trend in some WP-articles I've made: Earl Bailly met the queen twice. Kratu (dog) met King Charles. And now you. Afaik you didn't actually meet her, but still. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 17:25, 23 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hahaha that's pretty funny... indeed a trend. My husband refers to it as 'that time you "fought the Queen"...' haha
Hey, I really admire your precision... do you even want any of the information/links I mined today?...
I got a lot and was trying to organise it a little
I have a few photos...but not sure which one to use.
May I ask your opinion if you think I should use the most recent one? Or one from my 'hey day'... Elayne Adamczyk Harrington (talk) 22:56, 23 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
We have room for more than one pic, but for WP:LEADIMAGE, the custom for articles about living people (WP:BLPs in the local lingo) is to have something recent if possible, but someone "doing what they're doing" is also nice. If you can arrange several good ones, we can have a little gallery like at Skeeter_Reece#Gallery. And perhaps editors will find them useful in other articles. In general, WP is a bit starved for good pictures we can use, since we are very careful about copyright. At the same time we do have a collection of 107,946,988 freely usable media files.
You can share more links/sources if you like, it never hurts to have a selection. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 06:43, 24 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Cool, I will try make a gallery so...
P.S. very cool link. I am a fan of clown. 2A02:8084:2565:2180:6E5C:D3FA:AED:5D71 (talk) 09:27, 24 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
I understand blogs and interviews, etc are not accepted sources, but perhaps they may serve as helpful as external links, etc. 2A02:8084:2565:2180:6E5C:D3FA:AED:5D71 (talk) 09:45, 24 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
They can be, some guidance at WP:External_links#What_to_link. Wikipedians have been writing and re-writing policies and guides since 2001, and NOBODY knows them all. One tries to reasonably follow the important ones, and if you're doing it wrong, someone will probably tell you. If they notice. Hopefully in a WP:CIVIL way.
We generally stay away from WP:BLOGS. Interviews are not unreliable per se, but their use is very restricted. They don't help with "should there be an article about X?" (WP:N) but can have a limited use in other ways (WP:ABOUTSELF). An interview with you is a reliable source that you said X, but in WP-land, that you said X doesn't necessarily mean it should be on WP (WP:NPOV). Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 11:48, 24 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Gråbergs Gråa Sång heya ... where shall I send the photos to insert to gallery? Elayne Adamczyk Harrington (talk) 00:23, 25 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Once a picture has been uploaded on Commons, it's easy to insert anywhere.
Ok. Whoever is the copyright holder, usually the photographer, should upload them with their own WP-account here:[4]. That is the standard method, and we can use the pics immediately. If someone at some point thinks there's something "suspicious" about these pics (like the uploader says it's their "own work", but the same pic can be seen in the Daily Mail), the uploader may be required to prove their copyright via mail, and if they don't the pic will be deleted.
If other people are involved, one alternative is that they do this via mail in the first place, this page helps with that, they press the blue button and it helps generate a mail and tell them where to send it. This process (assuming they do it right) will take a few days. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 06:38, 25 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Btw, if you wonder "Does it have be this hard to add a damn picture?" Take a look at Wikipedia:Files_for_discussion/2024_July_14#File:Shooting_of_Donald_Trump.webp. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 07:20, 25 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Dude, those pages are done slickly. Nice one.
Can I just say, wow, you are on point... Elayne Harrington is looking sweet. You are the King of Brevity. whilst still keeping it jaunty.
P.S. is this just our thread here, I am still getting used to this format? Elayne Adamczyk Harrington (talk) 23:04, 23 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you, that's high praise! I might have to put that quote on my userpage. Basic rule is that anyone who wants can comment in any thread, as long as they mind their manners, if that's what you mean. Also, these talkpages are public, and can be read (and written about) by anyone who finds them. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 06:49, 24 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
gotya, great, thanks 😊 2A02:8084:2565:2180:6E5C:D3FA:AED:5D71 (talk) 09:23, 24 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Btw, I'd like your opinion too: I think maybe you should be mentioned at Irish rap. Any thought on where? Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 08:27, 24 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
I think it would be appropriate to feature me maybe within the 'Artists' section of Irish Rap, possibly just before Denise Chaila is mentioned, simply because I am a female rapper who preceded her in terms of releases, live performances and presence on radio, TV, media, etc... My publicity began in 2011. A mention here could be a good lead into an 'Irish female rappers' subsection with an edit to insert Chaila under that section. There is another prevalent rapper who preceded me called Ophelia.
I see many ommissions of actually quite mainstream but maybe 'Old school' rappers such as Rí Rá formerly from Scary Éire, the crew of which DJ Mek was from. I was managed by their manager for a part of my career (Frank Murray). Interestingly Frank managed The Pogues, Shane Mc Gowan & Thin Lizzy. Street Literature (formerly 'Urban Intelligence') are not mentioned either, consisting of Costello, G.I. & For Real, also linked with Lethal Dialect (Paul Alwright)), who, like myself, branched off independently from the 'Working Class' crew ('Working Class Records' is Street Lit's label). They were associated with scratch DJ and producer Moschops.
I used to be with Street Lit but after we supported Wu Tang Clan (Tripod in Dublin in 2011), collaborated with beatmaker G.I. for the production of some of the tracks on my second E.P. 'Big Words' (2013) I decided to be a solo artist. I worked with Moschops and that working relationship is onhoing. I was with a DJ called Barry Krishna (the producer of 'Proletarian Restitution')[2011], until we split, then I had a DJ called Rag Harry, then Inception. Finally, I found DJ FunkTom in 2014, for the release of 'Heart Lose Tempo', my double A side record release(2014). Tomasz Adamczyk is a scratch DJ I met from the Polish Hiphop community in Ireland. We married in 2019.
If I took some time, I could probably edit the Irish Rap Artists section to accurately and incisively reference the points I have made about the other hiphoppers with published articles, media coverage and back them up, but of course I can't touch my claims.
However I will start a new thread with some links you may find helpful if you care to build anymore on Elayne Harrington... or I can share the links with any interested persons. 2A02:8084:2565:2180:6E5C:D3FA:AED:5D71 (talk) 09:23, 24 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
In short, WP-articles are as good as the attention they get. If you see stuff you'd like to improve, like Irish rap or Homelessness in Ireland, go ahead and try. But as a Wikipedian, your task is to summarize (and cite) WP:RS on whatever subject, and that can be hard with topics one feels strongly about. To quote another user, "The most important type of editor is one who, in good faith, wants to improve Wikipedia. You can learn guidelines and policies and how to format citations and so on, but that desire to want to leave something better than you found it is a trait worth having." Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 12:01, 24 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Gråbergs Gråa Sång Sounds good! Thanks! Elayne Adamczyk Harrington (talk) 09:31, 25 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
edit

Elayne Harrington is now an article. Like everything else around here, it's a work in progress. Per the WP-philosophy of WP:COI, you (or your minions, if you have any) should not edit it directly yourself (outside WP:COIADVICE), but you are welcome to make suggestions at Talk:Elayne Harrington. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 19:22, 23 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi Elayne. Another thing you can do despite your COI is to nominate the article for a "did you know" on the main page of Wikipedia. The rules for this are on a page at this link. Your biography has quite a few interesting snippets which would make good "hooks". Creation of a DYK will drive literally thousands of people to read the article. If you need help making the nomination, then just ask for advice here: I'll be on the lookout: you have a week to make the nomination. Mike Turnbull (talk) 20:44, 23 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
You don't think I should wait til the page is a little bit more developed before I make a DYK? What you reckon? Elayne Adamczyk Harrington (talk) 09:53, 24 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
The rules say that the nomination must be within 7 days of creation of a new article. The process itself takes up to a month as it involves various stages. I nominated one of my new articles on 5 August and don't expect it to reach the main page until 5 September at the earliest. Hence there's plenty of time to refine article content. Technically, nominators must be WP:AUTOCONFIRMED, which your account won't be until 26-27 August (assuming you have 10 edits by then). Try to develop a "hook" you like and place it in this thread for now so Gråbergs and I can check it looks good. Mike Turnbull (talk) 10:35, 24 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
I think I have a good hook...
Something I learned from WP YEARS ago (2014...I recall the specific year because I then began anecdotally quoting the following during shows and workshops to celebrate the nature of translation, wordplay and meaning)...
Check out the 'International Use' heading in this WP tooic:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bodhr%C3%A1n
You can imagine I was fascinated when I discovered that one translation of the name of the very drum I play is the same word my artist name is born of 'miscellaneous'... MissElayneous. (Birthname Elayne)*
Please note that I recall the Wikipedia article referring to how the working people who worked the fields used to carry their tools and bits and pieces (miscellany) inside their drums and they used to 'winnow the grain' (or corn?) However, the article no longer seems to contain that information which I recall as it relates to one translation of the word itself.
From my perspective, this is an insanely cool hook because of the coincidental nature of the name aspect, but also, because of how I used to carry all my 'miscellaneous'junk around in my bodhrán in the carry case when I was homeless (I think Grabergs references this in Elayne Harrington from one of the newspaper articles)*
So many lovely layers of depth and meaning.
Subsequently, when I went into Art School, I did a series of self shot Visual Art videos with my drum where I pour dry Cornflakes into it and 'winnow'. And I have since used Cornflakes for durational artworks to date, because of the layers of meaning I derived from all the above. Elayne Adamczyk Harrington (talk) 11:11, 24 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
My bad, I got confused... I must have just read the article (see below + quote)*, but Grabergs doesn't reference it in the Elayne WP page. He does quote many things regarding the bodhrán though, which could be a link in to the hook idea
https://www.irishexaminer.com/lifestyle/artsandculture/arid-40246097.html
"Harrington carried all her property in her bodhrán case, slung over her shoulder. "I remember distinctly at one point having a Dylan Thomas collection of poems, a miniature kettle and a hot water bottle in there. I became very resourceful but it was very dangerous and destructive and has had long term implications. It takes years to recover from homelessness - if you ever fully do." Elayne Adamczyk Harrington (talk) 11:33, 24 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Fwiw, I put the bit about the bodhrán case in the article: [5].
The DYK-hook is supposed to be something (cited) from the WP-article in question, not necessarily in the exact words of the WP-article. So per current writing, one hook could be Did you know ...
Another could be
That one may not fly, but you get my meaning. Hmm, maybe "has been noted for her lèse-majesté with a bodhrán?" What can I say, it's my kind of humor. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 12:46, 24 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
dude, gnarly. Ugh. Love it:
"DYK...that Irish poet Elayne Harrington has been noted for her lèse-majesté with a bodhrán?" Subtly subversive and also underscores the absurdity of that scenario. Nice touch, my man. Elayne Adamczyk Harrington (talk) 13:20, 24 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Actually, it is quite interesting; the final proposal you gave for the Did You Know pitch is reminiscent of how the offense was worded on the Garda (Police) statement...(one of the initial charges, which, of course, was subsequently 'torn up'/thrown out):
"Inciting a riot by use of a bodhrán"
I would have to review the original document to get the exact wording on record, but, yeah...similar buzz
Kind of hilarious.
Also I recall a solicitor conveying how the prosecution claimed I was 'making gang signs' when reciting my piece called 'Sugar-Lump' ad verbatim... I was given a copy of the footage that apparently proved this and I had to inform them that what they were observing was normal gesticulation and it's very common for rappers or poets to move their hands.
I ended up using the footage for a song called Buachaillí Dana ('Bold Boys', as Gaeilge, in Irish), which I wrote regarding my experience of the Queen's Visit. Elayne Adamczyk Harrington (talk) 13:57, 24 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
"Inciting a riot by use of a bodhrán"! I love that! That's Constable Savage class! Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 14:58, 24 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hahahahahaha perfect parallel hahahaha Elayne Adamczyk Harrington (talk) 15:34, 24 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your above fwiw point and your action, too, G. (Have to look up a lot of the acronyms you use...it's good learning for me, so, thanks)*
So, in 4 more days, I will see a DYK proposal here: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template_talk:Did_you_know
and I can vote for it (using wrong terminology, but you get what I mean)? Elayne Adamczyk Harrington (talk) 13:28, 24 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
3 days is fine and yes. This was your first edit:[6], so it's that + 96h. @Michael D. Turnbull and myself will try to be helpful if we can/should.
If all is well, a DYK can go something like this:

If you decide to nominate, go here WP:DYKNOM and press the blue button. But like Mike said, wait until your WP-account is fully 4 days old. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 12:55, 24 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Gråbergs Gråa Sång I pressed the blue button. haha...it brings me to loads of info about DYK, which is great but even when I click on the template I simply cannot find the area where I type my proposal, and essentially post the submission... Elayne Adamczyk Harrington (talk) 20:42, 29 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
This link Wikipedia:Did you know/Create new nomination should work the same as the blue button. You have fill in the article, hook and source fields etc. Perhaps comments would be a good idea too.
  • article: Elayne Harrington
  • created 23 aug 2024
  • hook: that Irish rapper Temper-Mental MissElayneous was arrested for lèse-majesté with a bodhrán?
    • And don't worry if you can't get the wiki-links in place, we can fix that later.
  • source:[7][8]
  • author:Gråbergs Gråa Sång
  • comment: I am the subject of this article (not the author), and it was suggested to me that I should try for DYK.
Then hit "Submit". Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 06:58, 30 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Suggested hook

edit

Reading the above, my suggestion for the hook would be

... that Irish rapper Temper-Mental MissElayneous was arrested for lèse-majesté with a bodhrán?

which is directly supported by this citation already in the article. This can be copy/pasted out of the source code here when you create the DYK nomination. Mike Turnbull (talk) 14:44, 25 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Sounds fine to me. I hope it will be taken in the spirit intended, for example afaict Ireland doesn't actually have lèse-majesté laws (possibly very much on purpose). If it doesn't fly with the DYK-reviewer, we'll come up with a different hook. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 05:32, 26 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Gråbergs Gråa Sång sounds like a plan... Elayne Adamczyk Harrington (talk) 22:54, 26 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi Elayne. All images are stored on Wikimedia Commons, so they can be used across all language versions of Wikipedia. There is a "wizard" you can use at commons:Special:UploadWizard: just follow the details and license your images with the default CC BY SA 4.0. Your account name on Commons will be the same as here and should automatically get created the first time you use Commons either as reader or uploader. Note that Commons is very strict on copyright and you should initially upload photos you personally took with your own camera until you are familiar with how Commons works (more Help at commons:Help:Contents). Mike Turnbull (talk) 16:40, 27 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Michael D. Turnbull My cousin, who is a photographer, took these particular photos from a live gig. She completed the copyright template I received from Wikipedia, and I forwarded it to photosubmission@wikimedia.org.
Since then, I’ve been in contact with two Wikipedia team members to discuss the next steps.
Recently, I created a Flickr account based on the guidance provided to upload the photos for Commons usage.
I’ve encountered some conflicting information and am unsure if the copyright agreement template from Wikipedia should come from me. I included the photographer in the email, but there was no comment from Wikipedia staff regarding whether this was sufficient to cover the process of sharing the photos for potential use on the Elayne Harrington Wikipedia page, so I can only presume it is okay. Elayne Adamczyk Harrington (talk) 17:05, 27 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Oh, so you are several steps ahead! My understanding is that Commons accepts files directly across from Flickr provided that they are licensed on Flickr with a tag acceptable for Commons. Full details at the Commons Help page c:Commons:Flickr_files. Let me know if you run into any problems: I'm watching this Talk page. Mike Turnbull (talk) 17:35, 27 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Michael D. Turnbull thank you Michael... so, I presume I need to change my image licenses to 'Public Domain', so that my image can put to use... Elayne Adamczyk Harrington (talk) 18:04, 27 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Commons is ok with any of the checkmarked licenses here: Commons:Licensing#Well-known_licenses. Or the photographer having been dead 70 years, but that's probably not practical here. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 18:22, 27 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

The structure on Commons is basically this: We'll create Category:Elayne Harrington. Categorize any pic of you with that. Then we add further categories to that category, but the pics themsleves will just have the you category. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 19:50, 27 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Gråbergs Gråa Sång That's a great idea, G... Let me know what categories you think could be intuitive to the page, etc,...perhaps some fine art stuff, i.e. 'Instrumental'... I will review the page again and give it further consideration. Please do feel free to make any recommendations Elayne Adamczyk Harrington (talk) 20:02, 27 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

They look fine to me. If this was about the WP-article, I'd object to the feminism one since WP-cats are supposed to be obvious per article text, but I think Commons is a little looser. And if I'm wrong, someone who thinks so can always remove it. I looked in vain for any existing cat for Irish rappers/hip hoppers, you may be the first one there. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 20:42, 27 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Gråbergs Gråa Sång sweet understood... I thought the link to the feminism cat might be pertinent and nicely layered because of my mother and her involvement in the National Women's Council, and her union work specific to related issues for women in the workplace, alongside my work, which was often perceived as feminist simply because I am female, although my themes were never explicitly that. I did a lot of feminist gigs and while I personally identify less with feminism culturally, politically, and socially now, the sheer amount of feminism based gigs and events I was involved in probably warrants some sort of crossover there. Let me share with you some things that come to kind... Elayne Adamczyk Harrington (talk) 21:28, 27 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi Elayne. Please note that the DYK nomination must be done today or tomorrow or it won't qualify: the article was created on August 23. P.S. My article is on the mainpage today (the substructure search one). Mike Turnbull (talk) 13:20, 29 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Elayne, it's getting a bit hard to follow the above discussion so I thought we could start a new thread.

Template:Did you know nominations/Elayne Harrington has been created (by you), I tweaked it a little [11] and to the best of my knowledge it was done on time. So, now we watch that page and see what happens. Someone will turn up and say something. You might want to look at WP:WATCHLIST. And change the hook to "noted" if you like. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 17:24, 30 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Gråbergs Gråa Sång Thank you for starting a new thread, G. Apologies for my to-ing and fro-ing also. I don't know how to edit my comments, and I could probably apply my efforts a bit more in the way of brevity, but, ah sure!
I figured 'noted' isn't as dramatic and, well, perhaps a hook should thrill, hence I opted for Mike's wording in the end. Do you think I ought change it... Elayne Adamczyk Harrington (talk) 18:08, 30 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Let it be for now. On editing talkpages, things look different depending on if you edit on a phone or laptop (like me and probably a lot of regulars). I see, near the title of this thread, a link called "edit source" and I can use that if I want to fix spelling errors etc. I think, but don't know, it may depend on app or whatever, that you see 3 dots to the right of the title of this thread, and you can tap that instead. You can also change from mobile view to desktop view (should be a link for that at the bottom of the page) and you will see WP as it looks on laptop. Hope this helps some. Perhaps Help:Mobile access has something helpful. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 18:29, 30 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

A couple of things you can try if you like. If you go here [12] you can create your own personal sandbox page, for testing and writing/re-writing whatever WP-stuff you like. It's still public (it's just that people are unlikely to ever look at it unless told), and WP-rules about copyright and WP:BLP still apply.

You can also make a WP:USERPAGE if you like. Click the red link in your signature, type something and publish, you can always write more later. This page is basically for writing a little about yourself and what you do/want to do as Wikipedian, but as long as your a reasonable person, the leeway is huge. Many of us also use it as bit of notepad for useful WP-stuff. A few examples, and I'm fairly sure these have all been growing slowly over years:

And you can edit Wikipedia! WP:TUTORIAL is a beginners guide and WP:Task Center has some suggestion on things you can try. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 18:02, 30 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Elayne: well done for making the nomination. If you think of alternative "hooks" over the next few days before some other editor reviews the first one, it is perfectly acceptable to suggest several. I reviewed a DYK that happened to appear on the main page today: see Talk:Sophie Kropotkin#Did you know nomination. There were six suggestions in all and the one I chose was the one that I, as reviewer, thought was best. Incidentally, one thing you can put on your userpage, if you wish, is a simple WP:wikilink to your biography, so you don't have to repeat general information. Mike Turnbull (talk) 19:33, 30 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Michael D. Turnbull dude, I saw that one earlier, I found that dyk very, very sharp. loved it. I liked LOTS I peeped from today, actually. they were all quite whimsical, for want of a better word. can you link me to that article you wrote or a DYK u recently had approved, please?... As G was saying, the thread got very full, so I lost your recent link...
I'm not adept in reading wp people's profiles yet, so although I viewed yours as an example (provided by G), I can't find what I want... Elayne Adamczyk Harrington (talk) 20:00, 30 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
My article was rather technical: substructure search, which was in yesterday's batch of DYK. The nomination is copied onto its Talk Page (as is yours now) but the really interesting bit is how many people read my article as a direct result: see the pageview analysis. That's one reason we do DYK! Mike Turnbull (talk) 20:10, 30 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Michael D. Turnbull very cool.... is this your field or just something you're interested in? what way was the dyk phrased? Elayne Adamczyk Harrington (talk) 20:17, 30 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

I also added one that's easily sourced. On an unrelated point, Elayne, what genre of rap do you think you fall under? I wanted to add information about you to Irish rap but don't think you fall into any of the categories currently on that page. Elayne: I don't see a contribution from you about genre anywhere. I'm afraid you'll have to comment again. If you do so on this page, it shouldn't matter whether you are logged in or not, provided you make sure to save/publish (or "Reply" if you are using that method). Mike Turnbull (talk) 17:20, 2 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hi, Michael. Looking at what Wikipedia lists in terms of genre, the following seem fitting: alternative, experimental, political and/or conscious.
Personally, I consider myself avante-garde (I see this is referred to in the WP hip-hop genres article as 'progressive'... I may certainly fit an 'underground' category as well as possibly 'independent'.
I have, over the years, noticed the use of the term 'anarcho-punk hip-hop', which is supported by this article along with 'punk/post punk':
https://www.discoverboynevalley.ie/sites/default/files/Drogheda%20Arts%20Festival%20Programme%202015.pdf Sorry for my delay. Elayne Adamczyk Harrington (talk) 02:53, 12 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Elayne: I've added a subsection under the heading "Punk" to the Irish rap article, taking most of the content from your biography and adding the Anarcho-Punk citation from the .pdf. It is great to have an actual source for labels like that, even if I don't understand the term! (I wikilinked it to punk rap). I've also prodded the potential DYK reviewer to point out I added alt2, which I think is soundly based on a source and would be good to go. Now you can have fun updating the rap article for everyone other than yourself. Incidentally, I used to go regularly to Finglas East as my wife had an aunt who lived there. Mike Turnbull (talk) 12:24, 12 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
The DYK has now gone forward (currently on page WP:DYKNA) and will go into the prep area and finally onto the main page. You shouldn't have to do anything! On the day it appears, your Talk Page will get a message saying it is live. Mike Turnbull (talk) 16:04, 12 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Gråbergs Gråa Sång|Gråbergs Gråa Sång Hi G - I do not know how to reply to that DYK thread that you asked my thoughts on, so I am replying here. Re. "Comment. While the proposed alt1 is better than the originally proposed hook, it is not ideal (as "followed" implies a sense of wile that isn't in the source - which gives "attended with"). If it were me, I think a hook which focused on the subject's experience with homelessness (and attempts to challenge perceptions of homelessness and destigmatise the issue) would make for a more interesting hook. And is a much more topical issue. In Ireland at least. IMO anyway. Guliolopez (talk) 20:14, 31 August 2024"; I agree with all of that and think the homelessness item is true, clear and apt. Elayne Adamczyk Harrington (talk) 02:59, 12 September 2024
Sorry, I forgot about this, but things seem to have progressed anyway. On the DYK, for now we just wait. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 08:46, 16 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

In the spirit of 'topical' themes in Ireland, in 2014/15 the discussion of polyamory was possibly the first of its kind in public media. It has remained (unfortunately, in my opinion), the most common issue people (journalists, radio producers and documentary makers) have most consistently asked me to comment or contribute to the conversation on: https://www.irishtimes.com/life-and-style/people/polyamory-people-think-it-s-like-a-swingers-party-1.2094248(UTC), however, this does indicate it is a lifestyle or standing that people find compelling. I will try think of some more content for hooks, if not some hooks themselves (with your help to word/structure them) now that I am developing more of a sense of the nature of DYK hooks.#

DYK now at Template:Did_you_know/Queue, and, if I'm reading it right, will be on the Main page on 29 September 01:00 London time for 24h. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 20:57, 20 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Finglas and other DYK potential/WP page crossovers

edit

I recently wrote to a comment I saw somewhere on the Finglas WP page that asked (paraphrasing because I cannot find the actual comment): "Is Finglas rough/crime-ridden": @Betathetapi454 While Finglas has faced socioeconomic challenges, including issues related to generational poverty, describing it as "crime-ridden" can be misleading. It is important to note that Finglas, like many urban areas, has diverse experiences and characteristics. Media coverage of Finglas has often focused on negative aspects, contributing to a one-dimensional portrayal of the community. However, Finglas has a rich cultural heritage and is home to many notable individuals, artists, and community leaders.

For example, poets Paula Meehan and Rachel Hegarty have connections to Finglas, and Sarah Cunningham Bell's recent sculpture, The Bridge: Fiacha Dhubha Fhionglaise ar Foluain (Finglas Ravens Soar), located in Kildonan Park, was inspired by Hegarty's poem Flight Paths Over Finglas.

Interestingly, @Gråbergs Gråa Sång|Gråbergs Gråa Sång when writing this reply and mentioning the sculpture in my hometown I came across a clip of an interview with me commenting positively about how (young) people may gather around this new sculpture. I feel this speaks to the notion that Finglas is just a normal community and our young people aren't criminals and delinquents.

Additionally, Finglas has a diverse religious community, including a Baptist Church that plays a role in connecting local faith-based groups. I would like to suggest that the Jamestown Road Baptist Church is included in the Finglas Wikipedia page, along with a link to the two female poets mentioned above and the 2021 sculpture, which I consider an embodiment of the antecedent 'Spirit of Finglas' sculpture: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_Spirit_of_Finglas,_Dublin.jpg

(I am unsure if this viewpoint has been reflected in other's opinions and recorded in the media, or if there is any intention to pay homage to Leo Higgin's 1991 work, which forms the shape of a raven (https://www.dublincity.ie/sites/default/files/2021-03/final-finglas-heritage-english-digital.pdf) ...)

It is worth noting how Cunningham Bell was explicitly collaborative with people and organisations of Finglas when she conceived the work and she got in touch with me to be involved in the launch where she invited me to perform alongside others, including Hegarty. Additionally, I noticed, like Hegarty, I work in the CDETB and am an ACCESS student just as she was a scholarship student...we seem to stand for the same ideals that all poor people should have access to education.

Also, Paula Meehan is Hegarty's mentor and Meehan launched my record release entitled 'Heart Lose Tempo' in 2014, then inviting/or recommending me to contribute to the Irish Poetry Archive in the James Joyce Library in UCD. She also selected me to engage in this Yeats themed BBC3 radio doc: https://soundcloud.com/misselayneous/we-will-arise-and-go-now-podcast-bbc4 References: https://www.sculpturedublin.ie/the-lord-mayor-of-dublin-alison-gilliland-unveils-the-bridge-fiacha-dhubha-fhionglaise-ar-foluain-finglas-ravens-soar/

Elayne: The comment you are responding to was made at the Talk Page of the Finglas article, specifically Talk:Finglas#Is Finglas a tough/rough neighborhood??? Poor? Crime_ridden?. It was added back in November 2022 by User:Betathetapi454 but they may not be interested in that subject any longer. Anyway, if you have suggestions for article content, it is best to make them on that Talk Page, where other watchers will see them. Sources like you have provided here are gold dust for article creators, even if you don't want to add information based on them yourself. DYK for Elayne Harrington

edit

On 29 September 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Elayne Harrington, which you recently nominated. The fact was ... that poet and rapper Elayne Harrington carried all her property in her bodhrán case while homeless in Dublin? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Elayne Harrington. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Elayne Harrington), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.
