A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Hankey Group is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Hankey Group (2nd nomination) until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article. -- Dlohcierekim (talk) 22:30, 7 May 2018 (UTC)

DYK for Oakley Street, Chelsea

On 10 May 2018, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Oakley Street, Chelsea, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Oscar Wilde, Robert Falcon Scott, David Bowie, and Bob Marley all lived in the same street? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Oakley Street, Chelsea. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Oakley Street, Chelsea), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Event coordinator granted

After reviewing your request for the "eventcoordinator" permission, I have enabled the flag on your account. Keep in mind these things:

  • The event coordinator right removes the limit on the maximum number of new accounts that can be created in a 24-hour period.
  • The event coordinator right allows you to temporarily add the "confirmed" permission to newly created accounts. You should not grant this for more than 10 days.
  • The event coordinator right is not a status symbol. If it remains unused, it is likely to be removed. Abuse of the event coordinator right will result in its removal by an administrator.
  • Please note, if you were previously a member of the "account creator" group, your flag may have been converted to this new group.

If you no longer require the right, let me know, or ask any other administrator. Drop a note on my talk page if you run into troubles or have any questions about appropriate/inappropriate use of the event coordinator right. Happy editing! — xaosflux Talk 23:50, 14 May 2018 (UTC)

NPR Newsletter No.11 25 May 2018

Hello Edwardx, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!

ACTRIAL:

  • WP:ACREQ has been implemented. The flow at the feed has dropped back to the levels during the trial. However, the backlog is on the rise again so please consider reviewing a few extra articles each day; a backlog approaching 5,000 is still far too high. An effort is also needed to ensure that older unsuitable older pages at the back of the queue do not get automatically indexed for Google.

Deletion tags

  • Do bear in mind that articles in the feed showing the trash can icon may have been tagged by inexperienced or non NPR rights holders. They require your further verification.

Backlog drive:

  • A backlog drive will take place from 10 through 20 June. Check out our talk page at WT:NPR for more details. NOTE: It is extremely important that we focus on quality reviewing. Despite our goal of reducing the backlog as much as possible, please do not rush while reviewing.

Editathons

  • There will be a large increase in the number of editathons in June. Please be gentle with new pages that obviously come from good faith participants, especially articles from developing economies and ones about female subjects. Consider using the 'move to draft' tool rather than bluntly tagging articles that may have potential but which cannot yet reside in mainspace.

Paid editing - new policy

  • Now that ACTRIAL is ACREQ, please be sure to look for tell-tale signs of undisclosed paid editing. Contact the creator if appropriate, and submit the issue to WP:COIN if necessary. There is a new global WMF policy that requires paid editors to connect to their adverts.

Subject-specific notability guidelines

  • The box at the right contains each of the subject-specific notability guidelines, please review any that are relevant BEFORE nominating an article for deletion.
  • Reviewers are requested to familiarise themselves with the new version of the notability guidelines for organisations and companies.

Not English

  • A common issue: Pages not in English or poor, unattributed machine translations should not reside in main space even if they are stubs. Please ensure you are familiar with WP:NPPNE. Check in Google for the language and content, tag as required, then move to draft if they do have potential.

News

  • Development is underway by the WMF on upgrades to the New Pages Feed, in particular ORES features that will help to identify COPYVIOs, and more granular options for selecting articles to review.
  • The next issue of The Signpost has been published. The newspaper is one of the best ways to stay up to date with news and new developments. between our newsletters.

Facto Post – Issue 12 – 28 May 2018

ScienceSource funded

The Wikimedia Foundation announced full funding of the ScienceSource grant proposal from ContentMine on May 18. See the ScienceSource Twitter announcement and 60 second video.

A medical canon?

The proposal includes downloading 30,000 open access papers, aiming (roughly speaking) to create a baseline for medical referencing on Wikipedia. It leaves open the question of how these are to be chosen.

The basic criteria of WP:MEDRS include a concentration on secondary literature. Attention has to be given to the long tail of diseases that receive less current research. The MEDRS guideline supposes that edge cases will have to be handled, and the premature exclusion of publications that would be in those marginal positions would reduce the value of the collection. Prophylaxis misses the point that gate-keeping will be done by an algorithm.

Two well-known but rather different areas where such considerations apply are tropical diseases and alternative medicine. There are also a number of potential downloading troubles, and these were mentioned in Issue 11. There is likely to be a gap, even with the guideline, between conditions taken to be necessary but not sufficient, and conditions sufficient but not necessary, for candidate papers to be included. With around 10,000 recognised medical conditions in standard lists, being comprehensive is demanding. With all of these aspects of the task, ScienceSource will seek community help.

Fleming family

may I kindly ask if you created the Category:Fleming family just for the relatives of author Ian Fleming and therefore banker Robert? Elisa.rolle (talk) 22:42, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

Thank you, Elisa.rolle. I cannot remember the precise motivation, but there are 12 people and one company in the category, and I was aware that there were several notable people connected to each other. Of course, there may well be other notable Fleming families, and if anyone wanted to start a separate category for one of them, then we would have to look at what names to give each family category. Edwardx (talk) 22:48, 30 May 2018 (UTC)
13 people now, including Ann Fleming, who was married to Ian Fleming. Edwardx (talk) 22:51, 30 May 2018 (UTC)
Thank you for the answer. I do not wish to create another category, I added the article Anne Fleming and Catherine Jennis to the category and it was removed since this Anne Fleming is not related to Robert Fleming, and when I pointed there was no description for the category, the editor added the short description... it seemed strange that such a generic category like "Fleming family" was restricted to just one group, so I wanted to ask out of curiosity of which was the original intention. But I'm fine like this, not need to change anything.Elisa.rolle (talk) 22:56, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

Bit8

Hi Edward - I have seen your message and hope that this is the right section to reply back to it. I am not affiliated in any way with Bit8, am merely going to start adding content covering different companies in Malta and anything that has to do with AI as they are under-represented in Wikipedia. Don't know if I need to reply back in the discussion but I cannot see why the article has been submitted for deletion. -- Mark — Preceding unsigned comment added by Maltalinks (talkcontribs) 10:37, 5 June 2018 (UTC)

Thank you, Maltalinks. You should respond to the COI issue on your talkpage. The promotional content in the Bit8 article includes "Bit8 pioneered the use of artificial intelligence in the online gambling market, especially targeting player lifetime value maximisation, an important aspect that allowed operators to reduce costs significantly. The innovative ideas implemented and pioneered by Bit8 have since been adopted widely by the online gambling industry. The company has won numerous innovation awards ..." The article reads like an ad for the company. It may have been worse before, but the new version is still unacceptable. Edwardx (talk) 11:52, 5 June 2018 (UTC)

OK got it - now you pointed it out I can see how this can be interpreted in this manner. All of it is factual, but will edit this part to make it more formal sounding. -- Mark Maltalinks (talk) 11:52, 5 June 2018 (UTC)

Jusgo Supermarket

Jusgo has 4 locations, but Marina Food has 3 and Uwajimaya has 5 locations (including Kai Market). Is the reason why these wiki pages are not being deleted is that they don't explicitly state their number of locations? I know foundation date is a factor. Is this page getting deleteed because it was founded so recently?

Jusgo was nominated for deletion due to a combination of the small number of locations, the lack of longer-term significance (see WP:SUSTAINED), and the promotional tone. Someone else has since nominated Marina Food. Uwajimaya has been around since 1928, has attracted significant coverage (see WP:SIGCOV), and the article tone is not promotional. Edwardx (talk) 22:51, 1 June 2018 (UTC)
Galleria Supermarket also has 3 locations and is a local Toronto chain.
It has been deleted before, and has now been nominated for deletion again. Edwardx (talk) 08:48, 6 June 2018 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of James Liang

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on James Liang requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a real person or group of people that does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. Wefk423 (talk) 09:34, 11 June 2018 (UTC)

Abominable (2019 film) moved to draftspace

An article you recently created, Abominable (2019 film), does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please follow the confirms on the Articles for Creation template atop the page. Proposed deletion of Jake Sim

Hello, Edwardx. I wanted to let you know that I’m proposing an article that you started, Jake Sim, for deletion because it's a biography of a living person that lacks references. If you don't want Jake Sim to be deleted, please add a reference to the article.

If you don't understand this message, you can leave a note on my talk page.

Thanks,

Polyamorph (talk) 09:59, 22 June 2018 (UTC)

Thank you, Polyamorph. I only created it as a redirect. Someone else expanded it into an article. Will see if I can find some sources. Edwardx (talk) 10:03, 22 June 2018 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Rim of the World

The article Rim of the World has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No indication that production has begun (sources indicate it was supposed to begin in May, but nothing confirming this has happened), per WP:NFF

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Respecting MEDRS

Facto Post enters its second year, with a Cambridge Blue (OK, Aquamarine) background, a new logo, but no Cambridge blues. On-topic for the ScienceSource project is a project page here. It contains some case studies on how the WP:MEDRS guideline, for the referencing of articles at all related to human health, is applied in typical discussions.

Close to home also, a template, called {{medrs}} for short, is used to express dissatisfaction with particular references. Technology can help with patrolling, and this Petscan query finds over 450 articles where there is at least one use of the template. Of course the template is merely suggesting there is a possible issue with the reliability of a reference. Deciding the truth of the allegation is another matter.

This maintenance issue is one example of where ScienceSource aims to help. Where the reference is to a scientific paper, its type of algorithm could give a pass/fail opinion on such references. It could assist patrollers of medical articles, therefore, with the templated references and more generally. There may be more to proper referencing than that, indeed: context, quite what the statement supported by the reference expresses, prominence and weight. For that kind of consideration, case studies can help. But an algorithm might help to clear the backlog.
