Your edits on Vatteluttu article edit

Hi,

I have noticed your efforts on adding a section on Malaysia/ Indonesia on the Vatteluttu page. It's really exciting to know that the article is slowly growing. However, if possible, could you find referenced sources to some of your edits? If you can't find any, I'll be more than happy to look it up. Also, just one thing I wanted to point out was that the "Pallava" script is a generic term used by British historians to categorize the Vatteluttu (a Dravidian script) or curvey writting. To be honest, it is amazing how many old texts written by them use that word. It was in fact the kingdoms of the Pallava and Chola who wrote in Vatteluttu who sailed to Southeast Asia. That could probably be where they got that name.

Although, Sanskrit was used by Brahmin priests during rites and ceremonies in Southeast Asia, the everyday usage of communication was the the Tamil language and not Sanskrit. The original Sanskrit writing form was called Devanagiri (Indo-Aryan script), which resembles Hindi with the bar on top of the slanted characters. However, the Sanskrit words used on some of the stones you have mentioned were written using the Vatteluttu curvey script.

Also, I would not really coin Tamil or Sanskrit languages as belonging to a religion or faith, since both the Pallava and Chola kingdoms of the Tamils were not only Hindu, but were also Buddhists and Jains at one point in time. Thus, we have the Hindu/Buddhist(Theravada) cultures of the Sri Vijaya and Angkor kingdoms. Anyways, sorry for the long lecture. I love talking history. Since you have an interest in this topic, I would like to invite you to our Wikiproject Dravidian civilizations. This group is open to anybody and everybody who would like to contribute to Dravidian related topics. Perhaps you might find an interest in contributing to Dravidian - Malay/Indonesian archaepelago connections. Regards. Wiki Raja (talk) 10:49, 6 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Your question on the mutual intelligibility talk page edit

To answer your question here:[1] monolingual Tamil and Malayalam speakers can vaguely understand each other sometimes (probably about as much as a Dutchman and a Bavarian would understand each other or less). Kannada is not mutually intelligible with either, and none of these are mutually intelligible graphically because the writing systems are different, although again Malayalis and Tamils would be able to recognise a few letters of each other's script and some might be able to actually read whole words. --Grammatical error (talk) 21:37, 18 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hounding edit

Hi there, thanks for adding the section on my page about the 5 principles of Wikipedia. I think it was helpful, and really useful reading. I think the section on civility is really useful.

Is there any policy on respecting the wishes of users? I keep getting comments on my talk page from a user called "Andrew walker" even though I have asked him several times to leave me alone and talk about any issue on the relevant page. I've told him three times to refrain from sending me messages, and comment on the article itself, and I've told him I will no longer respond. If you could maybe something quietly about being civil and respecting users wishes not to be contacted then I'd be grateful. Thanks--Emily heller (talk) 18:54, 28 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

This is a bit of an unfair accusation. The user asked for the matter of a recent edit to be discussed, during which she continually made accusations, and yet asked that I didn't reply to them. That's not how a discussion works where I come from. Andrew walker (talk) 19:19, 28 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Translation needed edit

To: User:Kawaputra, User:Two hundred percent, User:Edmundwoods

Hello, I would like to ask you for help. We are having problems determining whether Malaysia recognised Kosovo as independent state. Here is a statement from Malay Ministry of foreign affairs and I would like to ask you to clarify to us if this is formal recognition, or something other from that. Please answer [[2]]. Thanks in advance, 92.37.123.179 (talk) 00:52, 4 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hello from Bobk edit

Thanks for your message. Race is something of a cultural construct for me but if you really need to know, I'm Chinese by heritage and ethnicity and I do embrace Malay as my first language :) -- Bob K 18:56, 9 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Replaceable fair use Image:Fongpokuan.jpg edit

Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Fongpokuan.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. —Remember the dot (talk) 20:29, 18 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for Image:Fongpokuan.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Fongpokuan.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page.
