File copyright problems edit

Nick de Angelis edit

Thank you for the message on my talk page and the e-mail. A few points in no particular order: Wikipedia is a collaborative project and as such is like no other "publishing" model that you would have encountered before. It does not have any "staff" or management of the article creating process. Everyone who contributes to Wikipedia is a volunteer. Certain users, the "administrators" or "sysops", are, by community consensus, given additional tools to keep the place running reasonably smoothly - blocking disruptive users, deleting articles etc. As an admitted paid editor, you have a conflict of interest and your contributions will be scrutinised heavily; please read our guidelines for editors with a COI - you will find them at WP:COI.

Like any other encyclopedia, Wikipedia has inclusion criteria, the principal one of which is notability; for people that is further defined at WP:BIO, and for creative individuals, even further defined at WP:ARTIST. The key is to cite significant coverage in reliable sources to demonstrate and support notability. At the moment your draft does not adequately demonstrate notability - I am not saying that he is not notable (present tense: once notable, always notable), just that the draft does not demonstrate as required by Wikipedia that he is. Also the layout of your draft does not comply with Wikipedia's layout guidelines or with the Manual of Style for biographies - please take a look at articles for other artists to see how they are laid out and formatted. Also note that as this is an encyclopedia, articles must be written from a neutral pointg of view.

You will see from the above messages about the images that you have uploaded that this is a tricky aspect of Wikipedia. For liability reasons, Wikipedia cannot accept copyrighted images except under a very narrow range of "non-free use" criteria that are set out at WP:FUP. I noticed that you have tagged the images with a note that the artist's widow has given permission for their upload. We have a process for providing evidence of that permission which you will find explained at WP:IOWN - note that the release must be for all purposes, a release for use just on Wikipedia is not sufficient.

I understand your desire to get the article into mainspace as soon as possible, but as we are all volunteers it can take time. Please remember that on Wikipedia, there is no deadline! I hope all of the above has helped. Please let me know if I can be of any further assistance. You may also be interested in the Visual Arts Wikiproject. The folks involved in that project would probably be able to help too, just leave a message on the Project talk page. You can also ask for additional feedback at the Requests for feedback page. – ukexpat (talk) 14:10, 18 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Your message on my talk page edit

Thanks for the message. I have responded in depth above. As Wikipedia is staffed entirely by volunteers, we cannot guarantee that in any time frame articles will be reviewed, moved to the mainspace, or remain in mainspace without being deleted. Please go to Requests for Feedback and request that the article be reviewed, but I must caution you that it in its current form it is not ready for mainspace and because of your admitted conflict of interest, and desire to have the page in mainspace coincident with the launch of the website, it will be very heavily scrutinised for promotional tone. There is no one who can call you about this, that is not the way Wikipedia operates (and I have redacted your phone number from my talk page). – ukexpat (talk) 20:37, 22 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Copyright help edit

{{help me}}

I cannot complete the instructions for copyright because i do not understand the process, I know no one who DOES understand the process, and am not able to do anymore on my own. Because the painter is dead, his wife owns the paintings and before she dies she wants her husband and his work to be remembered, so rather than try and do something that to me is unfathomable I would like to delete the photos and then apply to have the article reviewed and go 'live'. Everything in the text of the contribution is verifiable thru many venues which I have cited. I have been working on this since October of 2009 and I am at my wits end with no help. I have asked many writers if they know how to navigate the process and I have found no one who can help. It is not necessary for the pictures to be in the article; I just thought it would flesh it out some. This artist has left a body of work, nearly 5,000 pieces of art, comparable to many masters, he IS a master and apparently not many people in the art world edit wikipedia because they would have commented on this contribution by now. If you would be so kind as to tell me how to delete the images or if they have already been deleted for lack of the proper 'copyright tag', how to get the article reviewed and gone 'live'..

*I am looking into your question now. I can help you, and I will answer as soon as I have gathered information.  Chzz  ►  06:19, 29 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

  • First: I am sorry that you've had trouble. I will try to help you. I have 'collapsed' all the messages, above, about file problems.
  • There are two files remaining, that you have uploaded - File:Older Period.jpg and File:Pool ball.jpg. Neither has valid permissions. I think it best if we delete those, first off - if you agree, please just say so, below, and I will arrange it.
  • If you DO want to get the pictures sorted out, the answer is this:
  • We would need permission from the copyright holder - which in this case, I imagine, would be the painters wife. Please look at User:Chzz/help/myboilerplate. If you copy that, and can arrange for the copyright holder to send that email with the pictures attached to this address: permissions-commons@wikimedia.org - then let me know, and we can use them
  • Now, regarding the draft article. All facts on Wikipedia must be supported by a "reliable source" - that is, an independent publication, such as a newspaper or a book. This is particularly important for biographic articles. Unfortunately, if information cannot be attributed to an appropriate reference, it does not belong on Wikipedia.
Simple references require two parts;
a) The references themselves go within the body of the article, between %lt;ref> and %lt;/ref>, like this;
Chzz is 98 years old.<ref> "The book of Chzz", Aardvark Books, 2009. </ref>

He likes tea. <ref> [http://www.nicecupofteaandasitdown.com Tea website] </ref>
b) A section called "References" with the special code "{{reflist}}";
== References ==
{{reflist}}

To see the result of that, please look at user:chzz/demo/simpleref. Click "edit", and you can check the code.

  • If you can edit the page, add appropriate references, and remove unreferenced information - then please ask someone to review the article again. As long as it is well-referenced, we will be able to make it a live article.
For more help, you can either;
  • Leave a message on my own talk page; OR
  • Use a {{helpme}} - please create a new section at the end of your own talk page, put {{helpme}}, and ask your question - remember to 'sign' your name by putting ~~~~ at the end; OR
  • Talk to us live, with this or this.
The last of those is particularly useful - please try it; pop in now and say hello.
Best wishes,  Chzz  ►  07:07, 29 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

P.S. Please remember to confirm below if you want those 2 files deleting. Thanks,  Chzz  ►  07:14, 29 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Survey edit

A new user asked for help in getting some Wikipedians to complete this survey] - anonymous, and only for research. If you have a few spare minutes, perhaps you could complete it. Cheers,  Chzz  ►  06:04, 10 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Re. User:Edieangelo/Nick de Angelis

The draft article still lacks references to reliable sources - and these are essential for all articles, but particularly a biography of a living person.

In order to be accepted as a live article, it would need inline citations to appropriate independent references - such as newspaper articles, books, etc.  Chzz  ►  06:54, 17 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
