editHi there. Copyrighted logos can't be used in user boxes as that doesn't qualify as fair-use, as explained in the image's copyright box:
"This is a logo of a computer hardware company or product and is protected by copyright and/or trademark. It is believed that the use of low-resolution images of logos
- to illustrate the corporation or organization in question
- on the English-language Wikipedia, hosted on servers in the United States by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation,
qualifies as fair use under United States copyright law. Any other uses of this image, on Wikipedia or elsewhere, may be copyright infringement."
I have substituted a free image instead, but feel free to substitute a different non-copyrighted image if you prefer. - Ahunt (talk) 11:44, 20 February 2008 (UTC)
- I notice that you reverted the userbox to restore the copyrighted image and then another user changed it back again. If you manage to restore the copyrighted image you will find that there is a bot that will drop by and delete the image. We are just trying to help you out and not leave your userbox with no image in it, which is the bot result. If you don't like the image that we picked, then by all means find another free image or design a free image yourself. Just please don't use a copyrighted image, as they are not permitted in userboxes (see above)! - Ahunt (talk) 12:10, 21 February 2008 (UTC)
- Actually the user that reverted the image the second time was me as well. I hadn't noticed your post here, and by the time I did I was logged out. Anyway, I've read up on WP:Userboxes now, so no worries. Should I change the image on this userbox as well? EdibleKarma (talk) 04:54, 24 February 2008 (UTC)

- No problem - didn't realize that was you, too! The dark apple looks fine! Yeah you are right on the Clash userbox too. It is pretty straightforward - userboxes aren't "fair use" of copyrighted images or logos, so you have to find alternatives. It prevents our dear old encyclopedia here from being sued! Hey incidentally great that you are a Clash fan. I have tons of their stuff on vinyl, including their imported singles. Still play them, too! I actually saw them in Vancouver, the first time they ever played outside the UK. I guess you know how old I am! - Ahunt (talk) 13:08, 24 February 2008 (UTC)
