TFA requests edit

Re Great North of Scotland Railway, which you (or someone else) listed at WP:TFARP as a possible TFA for 20th September – just to let you know that suggestions can now be made at the TFA requests page for September, so feel free to nominate the article. As I've already spotted your sandbox in a TFA requests category, I think you're probably nearly ready to go! Thanks, BencherliteTalk 10:30, 30 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Precious edit

railways
Thank you for quality articles about railways, such as the Great North of Scotland Railway, for historic accidents such as the Versailles rail accident, used in the OTD sections, and their people such as Robert Stephenson, for a concise user page listing the articles you worked on, - you are an awesome Wikipedian!

Disambiguation link notification for September 25 edit

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Signal boxes that are listed buildings in England, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Great Northern Railway and North Eastern Railway. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

The Fifth Element FAC edit

Hi Edgepedia. Thanks again for reviewing my nomination. I responded to all the issues you brought up. Just wondering if you can now either support the nomination or let me know if there is anything else that needs doing. Thanks for your time, I know how long reviews take and I really appreciate it, i'm just getting overly excited about my nomination as this is my first article at FAC and it looks like its getting close to passing this time. :) Freikorp (talk) 14:06, 3 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi Edgepedia. Sorry to bring this up again, I can see from your contribution history that you haven't edited much in the last month. Nevertheless it has now been over a month since someone commented on my nomination, and it is more than half way down the 'Older nominations' list. I've long responded to all of your concerns, so I just need you to have a look at my responses/changes to your concerns and let me know if you now support the article or if there are further issues that you need me to address. Freikorp (talk) 09:42, 4 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
Hi Freikorp, I'm back and recovering, but I'll see if I can't take a look this evening. Edgepedia (talk) 18:03, 4 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Doing some building edit

Hi - I was doing some work on the six railway viaducts between Fort William and Mallaig, and noticed that you happen to be working on much the same thing, from image usage on Commons. They are the Larichmore Viaduct, Loch nan Uamh Viaduct, Borrodale Viaduct, Arnabol Viaduct, Morar Railway Viaduct, and Glenfinnan Viaduct. Do you have any suggestions or other input? The material available online is fairly scant, but they are certainly more interesting than cookie-cutter concrete bridges, and I was surprised that only Glenfinnan originally had an article. RandomPerson137 (talk) 11:24, 30 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

@RandomPerson137: – I'm not as active as I used to be ... I've been writing User:Edgepedia/WHR over a number of months on and off now. It's getting about ready to move into mainspace. I'll look at Thomas over the next couple of days and summarize what he says about Bob's concrete viaducts. Edgepedia (talk) 17:24, 31 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
This is what I found:
  • Thomas pp. 100-101 (Thomas, John (1971). The West Highland Railway. Pan Books. pp. 100–101. ISBN 0-330-02479-5.)

Most built with a standard span of 50 ft, including the one at Arnabol Glen; Glenfinnian uses 21 spans and Loch nan Uamh eight. A 90ft span bridge was needed to cross the river Morar.

The original design at Borrodale Burn had standard arches with piers in the stream, but the landowner insisted that the piers be clad in granite. To save costs the 86-ft high bridge was built with a central span 127 ft 6 in wide and two side spans of 20 ft. In 1899 it was featured in the American Engineering News. A review of concrete bridges by H. Gratton Tyrell published in 1909 showed that in the five years prior to Borrodale bridge only three concrete bridges had been built, all road bridges by Leibrand, whereas 52 were built in the eleven years after Borrodale.

  • Thomas also has a little background:

The first part of the line as far as Fort William had been built by Lucas & Aird, but there was delays with the West Highland Railway Malliag Extension (Guarantee) bill in the commons as the Tory and Liberal parties fought over the issue of subsidies for public transport. This Act did pass in 1896, by which time Lucas & Aird (and their workers) had moved south.(Thomas pp. 92-95) New contractors were needed and Robert McAlpine & Sons were taken on with Simpson & Wilson as Engineers. Robert McAlpine & Sons was headed by Robert McAlpine "Concrete Bob"; concrete was used as it was 10 – 30 per cent cheaper than masonry. McAlpine's son Robert, then aged 28, took charge of construction, and his younger son Malcolm was appointed his assistant.(Thomas pp. 95-96)

  • Construction dates (from the chronology, Thomas pp. 177-178): 21 January 1897 (First sod) to 1 April 1901 (opened)
  • Thomas, John; Turnock, David (1993). The North of Scotland. A Regional History of the Railways of Great Britain Vol. 15 (2nd ed.). Pan Books. p. 278. ISBN 0-330-02479-5. has a little more detail:

The 127ft span of the bridge over the Borrodale Burn is confirmed as the longest in world at the time. Glenfinnian viaduct is 416 yd long on a curve with a radius of 12 chains, maximum height was 100ft.

  • They are all listed:
Viaduct Category Header text
Larichmore Viaduct B Historic Scotland No.292
Loch nan Uamh Viaduct B Historic Scotland No.295
Borrodale Viaduct A Historic Scotland No.302
Arnabol Viaduct B Historic Scotland No.297
Morar Railway Viaduct B Historic Scotland No.296
Glenfinnan Viaduct A Historic Scotland No.310

These listings frequently quote their sources, which can be useful.

  • @RandomPerson137: I've taken a look at the articles and at Loch nan Uamh Viaduct#Horse inside viaduct, I don't think it can be said that the rumour was confirmed; the plaque and website linked says it was corrected. I suggest "There was a local rumour that a horse had fallen inside one of the piers of Glenfinnan viaduct during construction, but in 2001 the remains of a horse was found using radio waves in pier of this viaduct."
This is really great and much more than I was expecting! I've created a template for the common history of the viaducts, which will replace the current text that is common to four of them. RandomPerson137 (talk) 10:54, 1 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
Also added Banavie Railway Swing Bridge, another interesting structure on the line. RandomPerson137 (talk) 15:16, 1 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
  • @RandomPerson137: User:Edgepedia/WHRLB might be of interest, if you haven't already discovered it. The items in the list are ordered by distance along the line from Mallaig, and I need to add a distance column so you can revert once you've sorted by something. Edgepedia (talk) 07:54, 2 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
Thanks - there's a very large number of Category A bridges in the Highlands without articles, so I'm working through some of them. RandomPerson137 (talk) 11:34, 2 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia:Today's featured article/September 27, 2015 edit

A summary of a Featured Article you nominated at WP:FAC will appear on the Main Page soon. It mostly follows the lead section; how does it look? - Dank (push to talk) 20:19, 11 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Dank, it looks good. As you probably noticed, I really have not been around recently. I attempted to update the article (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Stockton_and_Darlington_Railway&type=revision&diff=680641684&oldid=680573239), can you please check I haven't done anything silly. Thanks again. Edgepedia (talk) 06:47, 12 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. The changes to the article text in that diff look fine (I generally only check text, not references). - Dank (push to talk) 10:48, 12 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

British Railmotors and British steam railcar edit

Why do we have both {{British Railmotors}} and {{British steam railcar}}? You seem to have created both in September 2012, a few days apart. --Redrose64 (talk) 16:57, 26 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi Redrose, long time since I was here! They do look like only one will done. I remember calling the work I was doing British Railmotors, and then I decided that I was really working on British Steam Railcars after this discussion. I should have proposed the first for deletion (3 years ago!). Hope this makes sense. Edgepedia (talk) 17:17, 26 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
OK, thing is, recent activity by Peter Horn (talk · contribs) means that several articles now have both where previously they had just one. I think the thing to do is for you to undo Peter Horn's recent edits, and then for you to add the {{db-author}} tag one of the templates. --Redrose64 (talk) 17:53, 26 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

Merge the two as they are not identical or keep the one that has the most links. Peter Horn User talk 18:38, 26 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
