I'm interested in looking into the concept of "adolescent egocentrism" and how it is related to adolescent perceptions about themselves, other people and their connections with other people and the environment they are in. I'm going to unfold the introduction from mainly 6 aspects:

1. The definition of the concept.

2. Different forms of adolescent egocentrism.

3. Early study on the topic.

4. Adolescent egocentrism and the manifested behaviors.

5. Adolescent egocentrism and its role in cognitive development.

6. Adolescent egocentrism and its role in identify development.

Just so I'm clear- is your plan to build a whole new page just on this topic? My first question would be about whether the topic would warrant its own page verses being a subsection of an existing page, which is how it currently seems to be. Do you think it would be more useful to build up one of the existing pages listed above, or are you really wanting to develop this page from scratch? Secondly, I don't know the literature very well, but I seem to recall reading some studies that challenge the concepts associated with adolescent egocentrism (like personal fable, imaginary audience, etc.), with the argument that it may be best thought of as an individual difference factor (i.e., some youth display adol. egocentrism, others don't), rather than as a normative aspect of adolescent development, which is how it's often conceptualized. I don't know the state of the literature on this, but it would be worth digging into first.

I know it is risky to build a new page on this. I'm just surprised that I could not find such a page on Wikipedia as I consider it as an interesting concept that is worth looking into. Personally, I used to be one of those adolescents who pretty much live only in their heads. That's why I was immediately drawn into it when I first heard this concept. I didn't realize that it is not a normative aspect of adolescent development and I'm really glad that you brought his up. I haven't studied much into its literature, either. According to what I've read, I'm not sure whether it is a mature psychology concept that has been defined and conceptualized. The closest thing I've found on wiki is the section from "Egocentrism" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Egocentrism). But I'm interested in digging a little bit deeper, and I sort of want to relate it with my final paper, too. I would be grateful if you could help me with literature study. I'm interested in the readings you mentioned that challenged the concept. Could you help me to find the references? Thanks! I edited the page of "identity formation." I added a new section "social identity" in it, but it was obviously undone by another user.

Hi Eden, I think it was in the 2009 Handbook of Adolescent Psychology (Lerner & Steinberg, editors), the chapter by James Cote on Identity development (it may have been the 2004 edition though). I don't have the handbook with me here at home so I won't be able to confirm until I get to my office tomorrow. I recall reading 1-2 other papers providing some constructive criticism of Elkind's perspective, but again, I'll have to dig them up tomorrow. In any case, I'm supportive of your core idea and look forward to seeing the page emerge as you work on each subsection. I'm also okay with you limiting the number of subsections for the purposes of the class assignment (i.e. for formal assessment), but would encourage you to keep working on the page even if it's not fully developed by the end of the semester. --Joanna Jml4bw (talk) 02:49, 4 March 2014 (UTC)

(From the email I sent to you) The information on adolescent egocentrism is in the chapter on social cognitive development (Smetana & Villalobos). It's the Handbook of Adolescent Psychology, 3rd edition, vol. 1 (Lerner & Steinberg, 2009). Really enjoyed the subject it is one I am not familiar with so I learned a few things while reading. Just a few things you might want to consider revising. The first sentence of the second paragraph probably needs a little rewrite as it is unclear. Under "Personal Fable" in the last sentence I think you probably mean "idol" rather than idle. In the last section I was a little confused because you mention that no new stages will develop but you also mention that a stage would be overcome and fade so it sounds like you are saying both.
