By-elections edit

Will you be creating articles for the by-elections on 2008-03-17 in Toronto Centre, Vancouver Quadra, Willowdale and Desnethé—Missinippi—Churchill River, or should I do it? —Nightstallion 10:49, 22 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi! They're now created at:
Please add all information you've got to them; I seem to recall that two or three of those vacancies occurred because high-profile Liberal Party members wanted to have a seat before the next election...? —Nightstallion 10:01, 24 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

To even begin improving the quality of our 1200+ stubs, it has been suggested that we get rid of all navigational templates. More broadly, we have to decide on various conventions; see WT:CANRD. –Pomte 21:05, 25 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi,

I've uploaded a new schematic "map" for the Canadian federal election of 2006.

If you have time could you help check it for accuracy?

Thanks.

West Ferris edit

Frankly, we need to stop thinking in terms of "deserves an article" and start thinking in terms of "deserves a good article". That is, if all we can write on a community is a short stub, then it should probably be a redirect to its parent municipality (or to a merged "Neighbourhoods in North Bay" article) whether it was formerly a municipality or not. There's no particular benefit to insisting on an independent article if it's just one more tiny and effectively unexpandable stub to watch for those trivial "there was graffiti on the side of the community arena in 2006" edits that such stubs keep accumulating. Bearcat (talk) 21:36, 18 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

If you want to reintroduce it (and personally I am opposed to what Bearcat has been doing regarding community stubs, but I'm not going to fight it.) do what I am doing with the article for my own neighbourhood. Create a user subpage and start writing the article, making sure you find as many sources as possible. Get pictures, etc. and make it notable. West Ferris probably has more to it than what the old article was (I've already forgotten what it said, making it not that notable!) but I'm sure if you dug around you'll find something interesting to make it notable. Some sort of significant event in its history or something unique about its geography or demographics. vıdıoman (talkcontribs) 22:23, 18 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
Deserves a good article, certainly. But it didn't have a good article. If you're willing to put the time into writing a good article, then go right ahead — but what it had was a stub. Bearcat (talk) 22:34, 18 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
For what it's worth, the standard metric which is currently used to judge the prevalence of quality articles on Wikipedia is a minimum ten lines of text and at least two or three solid references. And even that would still technically be a stub. (And for what it's worth, apparently less than five per cent of Wikipedia articles currently meet that standard.)
I'm also concerned about our ability to actually maintain too large a number of very short stubs — I've literally lost count of the number of times I've come across uncaught vandalism or utterly trivial and non-encyclopedic information in an Ontario geography stub, because people just aren't watching them carefully enough. Especially for very small municipalities, it would be a lot easier to maintain one article about the municipality, which contained brief subsections about each settlement within it, than it is to maintain fifteen or twenty separate three-line stubs that can very easily be combined.
Certainly, every named community in Ontario deserves to be written about in an article — I just don't think every named community in Ontario needs its own independent article, rather than a subsection of an appropriate larger one, if there's really not that much that can be written about it as an independent topic. Orphaned non-free media (Image:Stephanedionlogo.PNG) edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Stephanedionlogo.PNG. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. I see you have a history of working on the article Gordon 86, Saskatchewan. I am looking at it from the project Wikipedia:Unreferenced articles where it is one of the longest {{unreferenced}} tagged articles that does not meet at least the barest minimum of verifiability. It has been tagged and completely without references since June 2006. It would be extremely helpful if you had some references you could add to the article to help support its verifiability and notability. Thanks for any help you can give. Featured Topic Drive

By Maxim

The original featured topic drive, initiated by Scorpion0422, has concluded succesfully. National Hockey League awards is now a featured topic, with 24 articles in total. Of them, 20 are featured lists, one is a featured article, and the other three are trophy articles that were too short to become featured lists. Eight users signed up to help out, shown here. The next Featured Topic hasn't been decided upon, and the ideas and organization for it fell apart. If you have any ideas, don't hesitate to share them at WT:HOCKEY.

Monique Kavelaars edit

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Monique Kavelaars, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. If you agree with the deletion of the article, and you are the only person who has made substantial edits to the page, please add {{db-author}} to the top of Monique Kavelaars. Thanks for uploading Image:Ajaxontario.PNG. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 15:41, 31 March 2008 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Kelly hi! 15:41, 31 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Repost of Brookfield High School (Ottawa) edit

A tag has been placed on Brookfield High School (Ottawa), requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion debate, such as articles for deletion. If you can indicate how Brookfield High School (Ottawa) is different from the previously posted material, or if you can indicate why this article should not be deleted, I advise you to place the template {{hangon}} underneath the other template on the article, and also put a note on Talk:Brookfield High School (Ottawa) saying why this article should stay. An admin should check for such edits before deleting the article. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Please read our criteria for speedy deletion, particularly item 4 under General criteria. If you believe the original discussion was unjustified, please feel free to use deletion review, but do not continue to repost the article if it is deleted. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself. We welcome your help in trying to improve Wikipedia, and we request you to follow these instructions. GreenJoe 16:16, 13 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Image copyright problem with Image:Lenhopkins.jpg edit

Image Copyright problem

Hi Earl Andrew!
We thank you for uploading Image:Lenhopkins.jpg, but there is a problem. Your image is currently missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. Unless you can help by adding a copyright tag, it may be deleted by an Administrator. If you know this information, then we urge you to add a copyright tag to the image description page. We apologize for this, but all images must confirm to policy on Wikipedia.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks so much for your cooperation.

WikiProject Curling? edit

Do you think it is time to start a WikiProject for Curling? Maybe there is one already. I've been plugging away at some Canadian Soccer articles and am looking forward to adding some curling. As I've seen with some of my soccer articles getting tagged for speedy-deletion, it is important to know (of define) what makes a worthy article. Orphaned non-free media (Image:Portlandwinterhawks.gif) edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Portlandwinterhawks.gif.

Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 06:01, 12 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Duplicate Image:Canada06h.PNG edit

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Image:Canada06h.PNG, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Image:Canada06h.PNG is a duplicate of an already existing article, category or image.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Image:Canada06h.PNG, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. David McGuinty‎ edit

Hi Earl: Thanks for your note! Hey that is funny - Wikipedia is a small world and so is Ottawa South I guess! I actually brought my camera to the meeting with the expressed intent of trying to get a photo of him for the Wikipedia bio on him. In the last while I have done that sort "dedicated photo assignment for Wikipedia" quite a bit. It is kind of fun to do! I did have an interesting chat David McGuinty‎, too while I was there. - Ahunt (talk) 16:06, 7 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

I thought that Hijal De Sarkar came over very well in the debate - he was brief and didn't try to over-speak, unlike some others there! Wikipedia needs an article on him, though. - Ahunt (talk) 16:30, 7 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Image copyright problem with Image:Canada2006ridings.PNG edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Canada2006ridings.PNG. The image has been identified as not specifying the copyright status of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. Even if you created the image yourself, you still need to release it so Wikipedia can use it. If you don't indicate the copyright status of the image on the image's description page, using an appropriate copyright tag, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. Colours on BC prov election map edit

Hi; I happened to check yb your edit on Thompson and Cariboo in the 2001 election page, and saw the mapimage and its colour scheme; I thoguyt "but those are all hues of teh same colour , at laest at that scale. Now, I know this is becaus red is the colour-scheme of hte Liberal Party across Canada...although you'll note onth emasthead t British Columbia Liberal Party there's this "deep blue off on the left side of the party logog, and the blue ain't accidentall not one little bit. The traditional colour orf the right is of course blue; it was easier in Social Credit times when electorla maps were traditionally covered in blue and orange; don't recall mpas from the era when the re was still a PC rump, just remember the red-and-blue. Waht I'm getting at is it may be taht the colour assigned to the BC Liberals is the wrong shade of pink, and should maybe be blue, refletiev of the party's own logo; I don't recall the published maps in the Sun and Province but I don't think they would have been red and orange. Maybe, I don't remember, maybe there's a "primary source" map onlien. It's mostly because when the usual scheme applied to the range of hues in the map, the whole map looks like one party won the whole lot........; I haven't been by the hue-discussino page for quite a long time, maybe I should take the issue there. But i was sondering if this wasn't necsssarily bound by a guideilne; I just htink it would be hlpeful to delinate the colours both for graphic-clairty and comperhension reasons as much for a reflection of teh actual political spectrum "on teh ground", never mind the national Liberal colour (the BC Liberals are not regular Liberals, which I think you understand....). Reply here if you want, I'll tag your page for now...Skookum1 (talk) 01:07, 26 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Maybe the real issue is that the NDP only won two seats, so of course the map looks like it's all the same colour ;) I think if we changed it to blue, it would just confuse a lot of people. -- Earl Andrew - talk 04:37, 26 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
