Revert

I notice you reverted my edit just recently; could you explain why it's appropriate to mention the confiscation of telephones but the fact that several nations paid money towards the destruction of their national minorities is somehow too much detail for a summary? I'd prefer this fact was included in the overall article, since it clarifies the situation and demonstrates it was not an all-German project. If that means detail on telephone ownership is lost, is that too difficult to countenance? Thanks. GPinkerton (talk) 04:38, 16 April 2020 (UTC)

the article is quite large, and the fact that the Bulgarians and others participated is already in the article. That information is not being concealed, but it is summarized. And discussions such as this really belong in the article talk page, where all interested editors can see it and take part. --Ealdgyth (talk) 04:54, 16 April 2020 (UTC)
This doesn't really answer my my question though; I've said that if the article is too large, some less important information than this should be excluded. Don't you agree? GPinkerton (talk) 05:14, 16 April 2020 (UTC)
Article content should be discussed in the article talk page. --Ealdgyth (talk) 10:36, 16 April 2020 (UTC)

TFA

Thank you today for Gerard (archbishop of York), "not an Archbishop of Canterbury, it's one of their medieval archrivals - the Archbishops of York! And besides, this guy was a witch! Or, well, he was accused of sorcery. Well, actually, he owned a book of astrology and he studied Hebrew ... but these actions were so disturbing to his clergy that they refused to have his body inside York Minster, and it was only later that his body was moved inside the cathedral. Gerard had a bit of a temper - he once kicked over an Archbishop of Canterbury's chair in a fit of anger." --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:17, 8 April 2020 (UTC)

Will you be the one to schedule May? ... which is more or less two days from now? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:51, 28 April 2020 (UTC)
Yes. And as usual... I'm scheduling later than everyone else but I have yet to actually fail to schedule, so the people coming to my talk page to start panicking are not actually helpful. For some reason, this month is ... a tad bit busy. It's going to get done, but all the fucking people suddenly working from home are destroying the internet connections of those of us who have ALWAYS worked from home. Not to mention all the other crap I need to take care of. --Ealdgyth (talk) 21:13, 28 April 2020 (UTC)
Sorry if you felt panic, not intended, I really wasn't sure. The shortest time from scheduling to appearance I recall was less than an hour (Kathleen Ferrier), and - as you may recall - when I panic I threaten to do it myself, and do it (White Stork) ;) - take good care --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:42, 28 April 2020 (UTC)

Featured articles for May, 2020

Hi Ealdgyth, what's happening with the FAs for May? Are they going to be scheduled soon? Paracaido (talk) 10:06, 29 April 2020 (UTC)

Have I ever not gotten them scheduled on time? Yes, they are going to get scheduled. Unfortunately, things are kinda busy with a pandemic and all that crap. Also - I work from home ALL the time. All the extra people working from home are severely stressing my internet in my location and it's actually bad enough I haven't been able to edit wikipedia much in the afternoons and evenings. And I have a small farm that still requires me to get supplies for same reasonably often - so I have to do the town runs in the mornings to try to avoid people as much as possible. Those two things make life a bit hectic. As soon as I finish feeding this morning and then have my breakfast, I'll get a couple scheduled. If you could tell the rest of the world to quit watching Netflix while they work, it'd be great...--Ealdgyth (talk) 12:45, 29 April 2020 (UTC)
Oh, and @SandyGeorgia: - this is why the TFA coords have been scheduling so far in advance... --Ealdgyth (talk) 12:46, 29 April 2020 (UTC)
I see ;). SandyGeorgia (Talk) 13:15, 29 April 2020 (UTC)
Your mini rant (though it comes from a place of pain), brought a smile to my face! Pandemics suck, don't they? Looking forward to May's TFAs.Paracaido (talk) 14:47, 29 April 2020 (UTC)
And now my mouse is dying and randomly closing 2 or 3 tabs when I close one ... but just sometimes. I'll get a couple more scheduled and then off to Walmart (which is .. in the opposite direction of the feed store...(sighs) so can't combine a feed run with this..) for a new mouse, because scheduling TFA requires about 80 bazillion tabs open. I swear, I'm slowly considering quitting TFA coord... the FAC coord job is much less painful. --Ealdgyth (talk) 15:01, 29 April 2020 (UTC)
@Ealdgyth. Please don't take anything Paracaido says to heart; considering that was their ninth edit in a decade, their suggestions should be taken with a pinch of salt salt mine. ——SN54129 15:05, 29 April 2020 (UTC)

WikiCup 2020 May newsletter

The second round of the 2020 WikiCup has now finished. It was a high-scoring round and contestants needed 75 points to advance to round 3. There were some very impressive efforts in round 2, with the top ten contestants all scoring more than 500 points. A large number of the points came from the 12 featured articles and the 186 good articles achieved in total by contestants, and the 355 good article reviews they performed; the GAN backlog drive and the stay-at-home imperative during the COVID-19 pandemic may have been partially responsible for these impressive figures.

Our top scorers in round 2 were:

  •   Epicgenius, with 2333 points from one featured article, forty-five good articles, fourteen DYKs and plenty of bonus points
  •   Gog the Mild, with 1784 points from three featured articles, eight good articles, a substantial number of featured article and good article reviews and lots of bonus points
  •   The Rambling Man, with 1262 points from two featured articles, eight good articles and a hundred good article reviews
  •   Harrias, with 1141 points from two featured articles, three featured lists, ten good articles, nine DYKs and a substantial number of featured article and good article reviews
  •   Lee Vilenski with 869 points,   Hog Farm with 801,   Kingsif with 719,   SounderBruce with 710,   Dunkleosteus77 with 608 and   MX with 515.

The rules for featured article reviews have been adjusted; reviews may cover three aspects of the article, content, images and sources, and contestants may receive points for each of these three types of review. Please also remember the requirement to mention the WikiCup when undertaking an FAR for which you intend to claim points. Remember also that DYKs cannot be claimed until they have appeared on the main page. As we enter the third round, any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed now, and anything you forgot to claim in round 2 cannot! Remember too, that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Wikipedia:Today's featured article/May 16, 2020

C&C has just added an image to this one. It works for me, but if you don't like it, feel free to remove it. If you keep it, then the blurb needs trimming ... I can do that if you like. Sorry to hear about your mouse! - Dank (push to talk) 15:02, 4 May 2020 (UTC)

Whatever works for you... I just took a very rough stab at the blurbs, so I'm not at all concerned about others editing them. --Ealdgyth (talk) 15:04, 4 May 2020 (UTC)
Cool, I'll give it a shot. - Dank (push to talk) 15:08, 4 May 2020 (UTC)

Why?

Why are you doing this why are you deleting the information I placed on the Bielski partisan page and supporting the Jewish people in defamation!? Freeoflight&Faith (talk) 12:51, 6 May 2020 (UTC)

We use reliable sources on wikipedia to write our articles. Your additions lack any sources at all. And posts like this are not helpful - they imply that you are motivated by antisemitism to make the edits you're making. --Ealdgyth (talk) 12:54, 6 May 2020 (UTC)

Finally

Hi Ealdgyth, as discussed all those many moons ago, I finally have the podcast out. It's not the finished article and will definitely see revisions and refinement in the short to medium term, especially as I should be getting a half decent mic this week. But I didn't want the good to be the enemy of the middling, so I've put it out anyway. Have a listen and see what you think - I hope it's mildly entertaining. --Paracaido (talk) 23:39, 10 May 2020 (UTC)

It's nice to be appreciated, thanks for the podcast. - Dank (push to talk) 12:07, 11 May 2020 (UTC)

Aitraaz TFA

Despite my objections and plans for its TFA appearance, it is still scheduled for 20 May 2020. Could you remove it? I have another plan for its TFA appearance this year. Thanks.Krish | Talk To Me 13:02, 12 May 2020 (UTC)

And as I explained earlier, the date connection should be to the article itself. A date connection to the actress isn't that big a deal for a film article. I don't see any need to reschedule. --Ealdgyth (talk) 16:20, 12 May 2020 (UTC)
But even the 20 May date is not related to the article in any way. So I don't see the reason for it to appear on that day. Please, remove it as it is my first solo FA and I want it to appear on front page on date related to it. I am sure you can find another article for this day.Krish | Talk To Me 17:08, 12 May 2020 (UTC)
Most articles do not run on dates "connected" to them in any way. You're welcome to get a second opinion from the other @WP:TFA coordinators coords, but you're putting all the work on us for something you want. And you didn't make the effort to put the article up on pending notices on the date you wanted it run so we had any warning. There is no promise that an FA will run on the main page on a date the nominator wants, or on a date connected to it. It's not always possible - and it happens and has happened to the TFA coords too - and on much more connected dates - the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings missed it's appearance on the main page because it got a POV-pusher who made the article too unstable for that date... it happens. (And yes, i was pretty disappointed by Hastings missing that date but ... life happens). --Ealdgyth (talk) 17:21, 12 May 2020 (UTC)
I understand what you are saying but I have my plans for the article and I hope to get it on TFA on 18 July not 20 May. Let me try for 18 May and if it doesn't get accepted on that that, you are free to make it appear on any day. But at least let me try?Krish | Talk To Me 13:11, 13 May 2020 (UTC)
Hey! Just to inform you that I'm fine with May 20 TFA apprrance of the article. I finally understood what you were saying. BTW, this is an another article which I'm working towards FA. I would appreciate your inputs on the same. Thanks.Krish | Talk To Me 15:32, 16 May 2020 (UTC)

FAC

I have been trying to get spot checks done for some time for Hurricane Lane (2018). The article has 3 supports, an image review, and a source review, but still lacks the spot checks. The request for spot checks has been up for more than 2 weeks. I just don't feel like that is really going anywhere. NoahTalk 18:17, 7 May 2020 (UTC)

(talk page watcher) @Hurricane Noah: apologies if I'm missing something obvious—or treading on your toes, Ealdgyth—but do you need spoy checks? You both (nominators) seem to have plenty of FAC experience. serial # 18:26, 7 May 2020 (UTC)
Will see what Ealdgyth says, but I thought it was required that reliability be checked in that manner. NoahTalk 18:38, 7 May 2020 (UTC)
Spot checks are usually required for first or second time nominators.. they are always welcome otherwise (and I really like to see them, honestly) but they aren't usually considered required if the nominators have a past history of passing them at FAC. --Ealdgyth (talk) 18:41, 7 May 2020 (UTC)
Okay then, thanks. I was just concerned since the article is close to the bottom of the older nominations list. NoahTalk 18:44, 7 May 2020 (UTC)
Could I nominate another article please? NoahTalk 14:05, 11 May 2020 (UTC)
Yes, that's fine. --Ealdgyth (talk) 14:14, 11 May 2020 (UTC)

Hey, I was just wondering about the status of the article? I don't want to seem like I am trying to unduly push this along, but I was just curious since it is approaching the two month marker. NoahTalk 21:23, 17 May 2020 (UTC)

I'm on the road so won't have a chance to look at FAC until I get home Tuesday. --Ealdgyth (talk) 21:43, 17 May 2020 (UTC)
Alright, thanks. NoahTalk 19:52, 19 May 2020 (UTC)
Is it really only TC and military/history articles getting nominated at FAC? I have seen some of the same people really upset about my project's productivity level on the FAC talkpage (although it is only a few people nominating). NoahTalk 00:37, 22 May 2020 (UTC)
Not really. There are a lot but certainly not "all" by any means. By the way, should be doing a pass at FAC tomorrow morning when I'm fresh. We just finished unloading a large horse trailer full of books and other stuff from our move over the last two days, I'm exhausted and doing some gnoming before bed. I haven't forgotten FAC though! --Ealdgyth (talk) 00:40, 22 May 2020 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Sybil (wife of Pain fitzJohn)

The article Sybil (wife of Pain fitzJohn) you nominated as a good article has been placed on hold  . The article is close to meeting the good article criteria, but there are some minor changes or clarifications needing to be addressed. If these are fixed within 7 days, the article will pass; otherwise it may fail. See Talk:Sybil (wife of Pain fitzJohn) for issues which need to be addressed. Hyborian War -- prepping for 2nd FAC nomination

Hello. Before closing out the first FAC nomination for Hyborian War some weeks ago (that I withdrew because it wasn't ready), you very generously mentioned that you "have a few books on the history of the gaming industry, specifically the more esoteric parts (not the consoles...)" and that I might ping you to see if you have any other sources that bear on the topic. I think that part of the Hyborian War article would be this one.

Of course, I'd be more than happy for any thoughts on the rest of the article too, before I renominate. The updates were primarily adding the Play-by-mail genre and Setting sections (with appropriate lede additions) and most of the images. I'll also ask Gog the Mild for a review before renominating. Thank you kindly for your time. Airborne84 (talk) 05:48, 23 May 2020 (UTC)

Dimple Kapadia nomination

Hi there, Ealdgyth, good seeing you, I would really appreciate if you took note of (not necessarily responding) this discussion I started on the general FAC talk page. It's part a complaint and part a summary of the (frustrating; pardon my use of the word) FAC discussion surrounding just one word (in a sentence about her parents' religion which I was reluctant to add in the first place but when I did upon the user's demand, I was asked to remove parts of what appears in the source), and which led to this one oppose from a user who did not even read the article past this one sentence (admittedly). Really frustrating to have to deal with one line in the background section when the article covers almost five decades of film work. I'm not sure how much you closing coordinators read through chunks of text and that's why I started this discussion and am letting you know now. Thanks, ShahidTalk2me 05:42, 25 May 2020 (UTC)

No indication it is a reliable source

| venerated = Catholic Church[1]
Anglican Communion[2] Eastern Orthodox Church<ref>[1]Hieromartyr Alphege, Archbishop of Canterbury

For this edit, what would you consider a reliable source as to which saints feature in the Orthodox Church's synaxarion? If this is coming from the Orthodox Church itself and they have this saint in their synaxarion then what authority would be preferable? Eugene-elgato (talk) 16:53, 25 May 2020 (UTC)

The webpage https://orthochristian.com has no indication that it is an official site - I cannot find ANY "about" or "contact" information there for the page. The article you added it to is a featured article and requires not just reliable sources but high quality ones - we should not be using sites that don't give any indication of who is behind them. --Ealdgyth (talk) 17:03, 25 May 2020 (UTC)

Scarce

    • Note to folks - my main desktop tower just ... went wonky this morning. It MAY be repairable, we're taking it to the repair guy today hopefully, but I'm going to be more out of touch for a bit. And that's the tower that has all the research files on it... so... I can't actually get to any of my research for a bit. (Yes, I have backups but ... need computer to do so. I do have a very ancient laptop and a gaming PC but will wait to start shifting to those until I know for sure the desktop Mac is belly up). --Ealdgyth (talk) 16:49, 26 May 2020 (UTC)
