Re: Australian outreach

Point taken. (Quite honestly, though, after this response, I wasn't hoping for much.) Kirill Lokshin 03:12, 31 May 2006 (UTC)

Meh. I'm not really concerned about collaboration so much as simply convincing them to stop breaking existing things (like template conventions) ;-)
As far as the creator issue is concerened, I don't think it's really significant at this point, since the entire ADF project has only a handful of members. If we can get even a small task force going that will actually edit Australian articles, we can ensure a minimal level of adherence to general guidelines with little fuss, even if the creator doesn't particularly like us for it. Kirill Lokshin 03:28, 31 May 2006 (UTC)
True. Hopefully he'll be interested. (I think he's on wikibreak until June 5, though; I have no idea how big of a mess we'll have on our hands by then.) Kirill Lokshin 03:35, 31 May 2006 (UTC)
Nope, looks like I was right to begin with. Justinbrett's deeply insightful analysis of the other countries' articles reveals that "I have no desire for ours to look like either of them". This is going to be a big mess. ;-) Kirill Lokshin 13:19, 1 June 2006 (UTC)
Probably best to wait and see if your effort bears fruit before drawing too many lines in the sand; but fundamentally, I see no reason why we should (willingly) cede articles to a project that's not interested in a cordial relationship. Our ability to stamp down on their disregard for conventions in practice will probably be limited by the number of editors working on Australian topics we have access to; but I think we should maintain both (1) our claim that Australian topics fall within our scope and (2) our insistence that they follow the same guidelines every other country does, even if these points are largely a theoretical issue for the time being. Kirill Lokshin 08:34, 2 June 2006 (UTC)
Ah, excellent. If he could perhaps find another person or two who'd be interested in working in a task force (somehow I don't think recruiting the ADF project members will be too productive), I can set one up. Kirill Lokshin 13:38, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

Excellent! I shall await him with baited breath ;-)

Thank you very much for all the work you've done on this! Kirill Lokshin 03:40, 10 June 2006 (UTC)

Re: Question about categories for military awards

To the best of my knowledge, the issue hasn't come up before; anything that has to do with categorizing people is currently a mess (as you might have noticed), which explains why these particular categories seem inconsistent. Feel free to bring it up for discussion. Kirill Lokshin 23:48, 31 May 2006 (UTC)

Re:Help Request

Image rename and replacement, done! Glad to help a friend anytime. Tony the Marine 21:11, 4 June 2006 (UTC)

  • I forgot to answer your question. No, there isn't an official procedurem, you don't have to be an admin (note: I'm seriously considering you for nomination). What you have to do is upload the image (or "new" version) again with the proper name. Then you go to the article, delete the old version and replace it with the new version. Finally, you go back to the "old" image and proceed to delete it and explain your reasons for doing so. "Ex: deleteing this version and replacing with a new version". Semper Fi Tony the Marine 00:14, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
    • It seems as if the delete button is an admin tool. If you need that I delete an image, let me know. If you are interested in becoming an admin, let me know also because I would consider it an honor to be your "Godfather" (nominator) and I believe that you have what it takes to be an excellent admin. Tony the Marine 00:53, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

As far as edit counts go, you are overqualified. Your dedication and people manners are what have impressed me the most. Tell you what, I'll give you until June 4 (smile) to do some janitoral tasks (vandal fighting, PC patrols) and then I will put you up for promotion (don't let anyone else get ahead of me, I'm going to be your "Godfather). Sounds good? Semper FI Tony the Marine 01:16, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

Thanks

Thanks for the help with Military history of the United States during World War II, it needs to get finished badly. Rmt2m 00:59, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

Yeah I guess it does make more sense for them to be listed as "References." I've just gotten into the habit of using "External links." Everything that is listed under "External links" was used as a source, so it can be changed to "References" no problem. Rmt2m 01:25, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
Looks better already. One question: Would it be better to go straight into "Market Garden" right after "Overlord," or were there any major actions that deserve another section before "Market Garden"? I can't really think of much. Rmt2m 01:38, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
I don't think I've ever been called an expert before. Thanks! Thanks again for your help. Rmt2m 01:52, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

Check this out

These are the three standard questions asked to all nominees (Voters may also add a question of their own)

Questions for the candidate

Dear candidate, thank you for offering to serve Wikipedia in this capacity. Please take the time to answer a few generic questions to provide guidance for voters:

1. What sysop chores, if any, would you anticipate helping with? Please check out Category:Wikipedia backlog, and read the page about administrators and the administrators' reading list.
2. Of your articles or contributions to Wikipedia, are there any about which you are particularly pleased, and why?
3. Have you been in any conflicts over editing in the past or do you feel other users have caused you stress? How have you dealt with it and how will you deal with it in the future?

Check these out: Administrators' reading list, Administrators' how-to guide and Guide to requests for adminship. Tony the Marine 02:01, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

Re:Recapture of the Philippines

I agree. I like it the way you've done it. The articles on the individual battles are more detailed than the article about the Philippines Campaign, so it works better that way. Rmt2m 00:31, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

I was wondering if it would look pretty cool to have the order of battle underneath some of the battle sections in the Military history of the United States during World War II article. It would look like this;
Is there a guideline for this? Rmt2m 01:43, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

It's not nearly that complicated. The only thing to keep in mind is to keep the nomination short, simple, and interesting enough to pull in readers. I usually change the nominations before putting them on the main page, if they can be improved futher. — BRIAN0918 • 2006-06-07 00:41

On June 7, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Richard K. Sorenson, which you created. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the "Did you know?" talk page.

May get blocked

If I am not around it is most likely because I was blocked. Someone who has it in for me came and picked a fight at 1st Battalion 4th Marines with the sole purpose of pushing my buttons and getting me blocked. I have violated the 3RR, all in good faith, but to no avail. Read the talk page for the drama. It is stuff like this that has me seriously considering just leaving this site all together and taking up a more fruitful hobby. You know where to get hold of me.==Looper5920 06:16, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

  • Not a bad time to check that page. --Looper5920 11:17, 13 June 2006 (UTC)
    • I'd love to butt in here,...if that user is using multiple IPs as sockpuppetts, that can be reported and acted upon, even blocking all of them is possible. Looper: Don't let him bait you like that. I know wiki can be very frutrating at times when buttheads like them arise, but take a break and come back when you've cooled off. RE:Military of Australia and Military history WikiProject

Hi, sorry about taking so long to reply i have been on holiday. Just started reading into the discussion over the state of Australian Military on Wikipedia, i'm still taking it all in. I too would like to see an Australian Military task force and it would be helpful in organising the articles, stubs and everything else. I was surprised by some of the negative tone towards the idea. I dont know if i am the right person to start the task force but if nobody else will i guess i'll put it on my to do list. I'm just abut to start expanding Aussie WW1 generals, once i've done that i might have a look at it. Regards Hossens27 09:52, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

  • I Might try have a go at it in the next few weeks. On Monday i'm having knee surgery so ill be out for about a few days. But I cant go to work for 3 or 4 weeks so plenty of time for wikipedia. Hossens27 00:23, 10 June 2006 (UTC)
    • Thanks i hope it goes well too. There is a few users who might be willing to help the list participants on WikiProject ADF is a good place to start. I will get in touch with Kirill Lokshin in the near future. Also could you tell me if anybody can help in the assessment department of the Military history WikiProject or is it a bit of a select group. Hossens27 02:26, 11 June 2006 (UTC)
Hey Nick Dowling has told me he is interested in taking part in an Australian task force. I'm about to contact Kirill Lokshin to discuss the task force.. Hossens27 13:14, 17 June 2006 (UTC)
Yeah Im also looking forward to it. I hope you will participate in the task force when its up. And ill tell you something for free never have knee surgery it hurts like hell, i got 5 screws in my knee and the doc broke a drill bit of inside ouch. Hossens27 13:24, 17 June 2006 (UTC)

Thanks again, third response on my talk page. Cheers, Lindsay658 23:29, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

Re: Departments

Yes, that's correct; anyone can participate. The departments don't have explicit member lists because it was intended that they be merely a way of organizing work for the entire project, and would have no autonomous identity. Kirill Lokshin 13:40, 11 June 2006 (UTC)

Re: Inbox template help request

Unfortunately, that's a general issue with the way multiple floats interact (it also sometimes exhibits itself by forcing the [edit] section links to stack below an infobox); as far as I know, there's no way to resolve it. I wouldn't necessarily recommend having an image to the left of an infobox in any case, though; since both the image and the box have a fixed minimum width, shrinking the window width will cause them to overlap. License tagging for Image:Anderson EA USN h56034.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Anderson EA USN h56034.jpg. Wikipedia gets hundreds of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 04:05, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

Marine Corps Portal

Thank you for the update. I uploaded a new image in the article of Lt. Gen. Pedro del Valle. In this image General Pedro del Valle is greeted by Col. Chesty Puller. When I found this image, I told myself "Man, this is cool". Hell I would have loved to have met them both. Tell me what you think of the image. Tony the Marine 04:07, 13 June 2006 (UTC)

  • I was doing some research in the public library when I came upon the photo. It was taken on October 1944. Major General Pedro del Valle was to replace Major General Rupertus (who was also pictured) as commander and Col. Chesty Puller was the official greeter. Tony the Marine 04:48, 13 June 2006 (UTC)

(Hey, maybe this image can make the portal.)

  • Response: Thanks for the info. I've added some thoughts on your talk page. —ERcheck (talk) @ 04:37, 14 June 2006 (UTC)

On June 14, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Jay R. Vargas, which you created. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the "Did you know?" talk page.

Re:DYK

Hey, that's interesting about Vargas. Thanks for letting me know. You know there is one Marine that I have to write about. He was Sgt. Alexander Joseph Foley. Sgt. Foley was awarded the Medal of Honor during the Boxer Rebelion. Now the thing that really calls my attention isn't that he got drunk and died because of an accident but, the fact that he is buried in the Puerto Rican island of Culebra. I have got to investigate why is it that his family did not claim the body of thus American heroe. I'm slowly making some changes to the Pedro del Valle article. Tony the Marine 01:36, 15 June 2006 (UTC)

  • Thanks, now you see, this dosen't make any sense to me "Because it was not practical at that time to ship his body home". There still must be a reason that his family (if he had any) didn't claim his body or at least his hometown, Phillie should have done so. Instead he is buried in this small which most people have never heard of. Interesting huh? Tony the Marine 02:06, 15 June 2006 (UTC)

RE:Military history assessment department

Thanks for clearing that up, I look forward to helping with the assessing. Hossen27

Looking for some input

Do me a favor and take a look at this Talk page. I am looking to change up the list a bit and am looking for some input. Appreciate any ideas you may have. Thanks--Looper5920 11:24, 15 June 2006 (UTC)

Michael Crescenz

Suggest you and others in the military project work on this. It's is sore need of cleanup and this guy is a MOH recipient. It got tagged for deletion but I think that's at bay right now. Rlevse 16:15, 17 June 2006 (UTC)

  • With thanks to Rlevse. The article has been expanded/cleaned up. —ERcheck (talk) @ 03:12, 18 June 2006 (UTC)

Thank you

I've been a little busy lately with a sick wife but,I wanted to thank you for motivating me to work on the Pedro del Valle article. Semper Fi Tony the Marine 07:57, 18 June 2006 (UTC)

RE:Australian task force - congratulations

Feeling a little better, start physiopherapy soon, cant wait. Its good to see 5 members already and only 2 of us are members of the ADF wikiproject, I have sent out invitations to the other ADF members. Thanks for all your support and the way you pushed for the task force to happen. Regards Hossens27 03:41, 19 June 2006 (UTC)

Vandal blocking

No problemmo. Happy to block vandals anytime. - Richardcavell 02:23, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

George Thomas Coker

As we both have an interest in this article and I've put it up for Good Article, WP:GAC, could you or one of your military project buds look it over with that in mind? Anyone can approve a GA. Rlevse 12:45, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

Military history of the United States during World War II

Thanks for continuing to look over the article. Do you know or do you know anyone that knows anything about the Burma Campaign or the Battle of the Aleutian Islands? Rmt2m 14:37, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

Ok thanks I'll give it a try. Rmt2m 02:21, 22 June 2006 (UTC)
Dang it, I've got one of those, "Hiroshima and Nagasaki was terrorism" people messing with the article now. Rmt2m 15:17, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

Chat

I read the article about Miguel Keith. He entered the Corps on May 1, 1969 and I on May 19, 1969. My basic training was in Parris Island and his in Pendelton. You know I found it interesting and I just wonder if we ever crossed paths. I'm going to do the Sgt. Foley article, you can bet on that. Semper Fi Tony the Marine 23:00, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

It is done! Tony the Marine 08:20, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

Re:USMC Portal - featured biography

It is with pleasure that I see the article of Pedro del Valle featured inthe portal. That became possible thanks to your motivation and editing. I checked every single article related to Marine's who were recepiants of the Medal of Honor and in some cases (such as Dan Daly) I uploaded the proper image of the original version of the medal which they were awarded. How do they look to you? Tony the Marine 18:38, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

Re:Medal of Honor images

Wow, I didn't realize that you posted those images, I'm sorry. If you like I will revert to your version to keep the info boxes within uniform and maybe insert the accurate images in some part of the article. It's your call and I will respect your decision. Semper Fi Tony the Marine 22:21, 25 June 2006 (UTC)
