2014 Tour de France, Stage 1 to Stage 11

Thanks for your sterling efforts in keeping this and similar articles up to date. It would be good if we could find images of the stage profiles as in previous years, but I have absolutely no clue how to create them without breaching copyright. I can't see any on any foreign language Wikipedia either. Any thoughts?

I have been a bit busy of late, but should now have a bit of time on my hands, so plan to create articles for the more important of the missing climbs. IIRC, there is a notability guideline, but I can't trace it, to the effect that only climbs ranked Cat 2 or higher warrant a Wikipedia article. If so, is there any point in red linking the minor climbs. I was at Grinton Moor and Blubberhouses over the weekend, but I can't see any merit in an article about them. (If I can cycle up them, they can't be too difficult!)

Bikeroo, I've been keeping an eye on this Commons category for any relevant photos, as well as other route location categories on Commons for other photos. Though, someone seems keen to delete those non-cycling-specific ones from the article. I'm sure that any previous stage profile image creators would know the relevant procedure, if you feel that they are necessary. I've interpolated much of the route descriptions from the official ones, anyway. I've left a hidden note next to each redlink which most deserves a new article. Many have a companion article on the French Wikipedia, which can be translated by putting the link into Bing Translator (as http, rather than https - and Google translator seems to not be working for me), then copyedited. Links just to Category 2 climbs or higher (and others with an existing article) sounds reasonable enough. Perhaps, de-link and italicise the lower ones as foreign language, and link just to any villages named in the climb? Regards, EP111 (talk) 14:24, 11 July 2014 (UTC)

I have now created articles for Le Markstein and Col du Platzerwasel. As the Col du Petit Ballon article (such as it) refers to the mountain, I will add an article about Col du Petit Ballon. Unfortunately, at present I cannot find a source that directly covers the TdF route. Climbbybike has only one climb, from a very different place.[1]

Regarding Col du Platzerwasel, I have gone with the altitude shown on the IGN map (1,182 m) (which differs from the road sign in the picture in the infobox by 1 m), although the height quoted by the TdF (and used on the TdF articles) is 1,193 m. Bikeroo (talk) 11:26, 13 July 2014 (UTC)

Noted, please change as appropriate, until further evidence. The photo is a good citation for the name. Though, fr:Col d'Azet describes it as primarily as Col d'Azet with the secondary Col de Val-Louron-Azet (I presume written by somebody who is also a native speaker of French). Please excuse my ultra-pedanticism, I wonder how relevant the extra hyphen is? Thanks. I may get around to some of the other 1980s—1990s Tour years, eventually, as well as filling in some of the stage and general classifications for the separate stage articles. Using the example of 1987, the best references are here and here. However, I'd already planned a lot of geography edits, to be getting on with, for the time being. Merseyrail reverts proposed stations

For my information, why have you reversed my edits, these stations do not exist and as a yardstick they will probably not exist in the next 25 years. So why do you want to include them? Babydoll9799 (talk) 10:48, 14 October 2014 (UTC)

As I mentioned in the edit summary, there is precedent for including proposed stations in the template. That precedent had tacit consensus, (i.e. WP:SILENCE) which is a reasonable way to edit on Wikipedia, please read both of those articles which are linked. In essence, a person should prefer to edit by agreement with many others, rather than simply removing something because a person disagrees with one other. You may also like to consider reading the references section of Beechwood railway station (in particular, page 14 of the Core Strategy for Wirral), with regard to discussion of the future existence of that station, which is definitely on the agenda, albeit long-term, and apply a similar procedure for other proposed stations. Another point I'd like to make is that it's worth reading WP:USI before any future deletion of unsourced information (such as this), as it is preferable to leave something or request a citation/reference, if one is unsure, in similar cases. However, one shouldn't overuse the citation needed template. I've referenced Upper Bidston Village as being a part of Beechwood, for your interest, now, so that you can be sure it's true. They're not what I would regard as the best references (I would prefer a written source, rather than a photographic one such as Google Street View or Commons, though a picture says a thousand words), however they should make the point that Upper Bidston Village exists and is within Beechwood, i.e. behind the sign. Hello there, I understand that they're to be placed at the top of the External links section (which should be at the bottom, but above footers, per wp:order), otherwise beneath the last section (usually references), if there is no External links section. See Templates for external links, which specifies their inclusion. I won't be altering them, and I don't suppose that there's any need to, as they're in the right place for expansion with external links, if those pages have none - and there's still a lot more to get through. Yes, and that doesn't make any sense, as if there's only one section on the page, with no infobox, they'd be in the very top right corner - and, after going through thousands of articles, I'm yet to see any in that position. It'd save a lot of effort to put them all in the correct position for a completed article, as that would save other editors from having to move them all, eventually. I've not yet found one of your edits which had no sections, although I've not checked them all. I see that in your first comment above, you mentioned wp:order (which I overlooked last time): that says "box-type templates such as {{Commons}} ... have to be put at the beginning of the last section of the article (which is not necessarily the "External links" section) so that boxes will appear next to, rather than below, the list items"; the section has a link to Wikipedia:Wikimedia sister projects, where that sentence is identical. I have yet to find anything that advocates "otherwise beneath the last section (usually references), if there is no External links section". --Redrose64 (talk) 15:40, 1 December 2014 (UTC)

Wee places in Shetland

I have redirected Brough as it is simply a part of a tiny village, the whole of which has a population of 100 or less.

I am a bit confused by your edits to the Braewicks.

Braewick, North Mainland is really just an outpost of Braehoulland and I am not sure it is worth keeping.

Your move has created the name Braewick, West Mainland. However it is actually east of 'Braewick, North Mainland'. WP:UKPLACE does not have a great deal to say about this but, assuming you think the one in Esha Ness is really needed I'd suggest disambiguating by parish. One is clearly in Northmavine, but the one further east and south I am not sure about - possibly Walls. Ben MacDui 13:59, 17 December 2014 (UTC)

Hello, with regard to Braewick, West Mainland: I agree that it's slightly east of the other one. However, it does fall within West Mainland, by the map provided and is just slightly west of Aith, as specified (I expect that actually means west of Aith, on the Walls & Sandness peninsula, according to the map). I'd keep both places as notability would fall within WP:GEOLAND as populated, legally recognised places. I've provided the parish in the infobox, for Braewick, West Mainland, it can be referenced at Details of Braewick. I am not over familiar with either very small settlements or parishes but I have a question and a suggestion.

Q. In what way are these tiny settlements "legally recognised places". The only such I am familiar with locally are the communty councils.

Suggestion: I am not at all convinced that calling a settlement "West Mainland" is helpful as I can see no evidence that this is a formal title. This map may be helpful although it is not clear which parishes they are using. They are apparently not the modern civil parishes. Similarly with this map. "Shetland In Statistics 2005" lists the 18 community council areas (p. 54), which may be more definitive. I'd much prefer Braewick, Northmavine (or Northmaven if you prefer) and Braewick, Sandsting as these names locate the settlements more specifically and less ambiguously. Hello again, legal recognition can be defined by their being on an Ordnance Survey map, which both Braewicks are, therefore recognised by the government, the legal authority. If you'd like to use the Ordnance Survey Map option on Bing Maps, for example, which is on a dropdown menu on the top left of the Bing Maps page by "Road", you can see both Braewicks. Canmore is a government website, which can also be used to support this recognition, if any additional supporting references are required, as well as ScotlandsPlaces, another government website. You may go with the parishes, if you wish, as I don't particularly mind one way or the other. The PDF link is providing a 404 unfortunately, so I can't offer any comment on it without delving into archive.org and I agree that the other two maps don't provide enough fine detail and appear to be dated. With regard to the parish maps, which I've been using, these can be found as links from Details of Braewick (Sandsting), for instance, through the link on the parish name, and then the map tab on the right. The map can then be zoomed in, to give the outline of the parish to a much finer detail. As far as I'm aware, it uses the latest parishes. Regards, EP111 (talk) 19:56, 17 December 2014 (UTC)

The appearance of farmhouse, dwelling or cluster of the same on an OS map is not a legal recognition, and I note that Scotland's Places describes Braewick, Northmavine as a "farmstead". There has been a lot of discussion about this in the past with reference to WP:NOT and whilst there are examples of very small settlements with signficant histories (especially where they were cleared in the 19th century) I suspect these are not examples. Parishes

I know you are not keen on lengthy dialogue but as you are appearing on my watch list with considerable regularity and I am not keen on edit wars I thought it best to point out that if you add "civil parish" to the UK infobox it provides a link to Civil parishes in England, a quite different beast to the essentially redundant Civil parishes in Scotland. This is something which I'd noticed a while ago, too. So, the point isn't a problem in this instance and I'm actually rather glad that somebody's raised it. I'm generally an abundant inclusionist (I do much prefer it to dialogue!), if things can be reasonably referenced. So, if the idea is worth forwarding, it may be useful for a template editor to update the Template:Infobox UK place to allow for the correct linking of the Scottish civil parishes (i.e. something along the lines of a simple copy & paste adjustment such as "|civil_parish_scotland="), and the community council areas. Tour de France lists

Hi EP111, I see you're created many list of teams and cyclist in the Tour de France. Great job! They look very nice :). You inspired me and I started created lists of cyclists at the UCI Road World Championships. When making these list I saw that the sortable column for results is not sorting realy good.. After 1 comes 11, 12 and then 2, 21,22, 3, 31 etc. I saw that the same problem occurs in your lists. If you're going to create more pages, here a tip how you can fix this. If you put at the top of the table !!data-sort-type="number"|Rank in stead of !!Rank it sorts the column by number. However now comes DNF at top of the list. To give them a higher value you can put {{Hs|999}} in front of each DNS, so it gets the number 999. See for instance List of elite cyclists at the 2013 UCI Road World Championships. Tour de France start lists

Hey man, I saw you started making lists for all the pelotons in the Tour and I would like to say nice work! I'm glad to see another person starting to expand the cycling articles on here! I noticed you don't have too many sources so I dropped by to give you links to some online newspapers that will usually have the starting line ups with the numbers and what not. The first, Il Littoriale, El Mundo, and Corriere dello Sport. With Corriere dello Sport you can't just click on the link in the individual years to see the individual papers for some reason. To get around this, I always open a link to another paper from the same site (ex. http://dlib.coninet.it/bookreader.php?&c=1&f=9938&p=2#page/2/mode/2up), then when on the specific year and date you need (ex. for the 1953 Tour de France you'd want the July 3, 1953 edition of the paper) then I click the page and the file won't load the newspaper but the link will, and its url will read (http://dlib.coninet.it/?q=node/6&f=9352&p=1&c=1). You then take the number after the f=, in this case 9352, and put it after the f= in the first link (http://dlib.coninet.it/bookreader.php?&c=1&f=9352&p=2#page/2/mode/2up). Now the newspaper will load. You can also just get the number by hovering over the link and looking at the bottom of your browser. If the paper doesn't have the rosters on the day of the start of the race, sometimes the roster will be in the newspaper a day in advance too. I use all those in my edits with the yearly Giro articles and are solid sources. Hopefully these will be of some help to you and keep up the good work! Thanks for the encouragement and the advice! I've been relying on the letour.fr etc. lists mainly, with additional info, corrections (the official TdF site isn't always as accurate as it could be!) and adjustments from banaan.org etc. and the archived lists of memoire-du-cyclisme.net at archive.org, as well as the Italian and French wikis. Many of the redlinked riders already have good stubs on some of the foreign language wikis, so I hope that people can get translating. I use Bing translator, for this job, mainly, with the urls as http rather than https, as Bing doesn't like them secured for translation. I'm sure that the sources can be added later, as I'm more concerned with getting all of the rider lists, for the TdF, completed at the moment. Regards, EP111 (talk) 12:40, 18 January 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for the positive feedback! Only a few more days to go, now, and the TdF section will have all years added! The individual team tables are still to be included. Though, as things stand, it'll certainly help with giving everyone an idea of how many more teams and riders need new pages. Adding all of the pages for each year's stages (about 200 pages of work) is also something which needs doing eventually, too. Inadequacies

G'day, opining that a reason is inadequate is not calling a person inadequate - otherwise I would be justified in thinking that you had attacked me by saying my reason for removal of that sentence was inadequate. @YSSYguy: If it's any help, the implication was that my reasoning was inadequate. I find also that WP:CIVIL is quite central to one's own and everybody else's wellbeing, as well as WP:NPA. If my original comment on Talk:Germanwings Flight 9525#Disputed removal of a sentence can be re-read, I'm willing for the link to the Lufthansa accidents to be removed, but not necessarily the sentence. There was no such implication from my side; this is why the written word is so inadequate compared to actual speech - meanings are inferred by one party that the other in no way intended. As far as I can tell, you said you thought I had not properly justified the removal of the sentence. I have attempted to explain my reasons fully there. For what it's worth, I genuinely can't see why Herr Spohr's comment helps anyone to understand the event - any more than Prince Andrew's "statistically a jumbo jet had to fall on a town and kill lots of people sooner or later" comment after the Lockerbie disaster - and I can't see that WP reporting the comment helps at all either; it seems to me Spohr was almost babbling when he said that. Abbeville

Thanks for your translation and expansion of the Abbeville article. Whereas, the expansion is assuredly needed and appreciated, I had two points to make or maybe questions or whatever they are but anyway. First, I know that it benefits us monolingual English editors and readers of the Wiki if, on these foreign articles, the editors and contributors/translators can provide as many English references as possible. Second, when you are done if you can let me know, I will, if you have not already, tighten up the references (standardize, expand, etc.). I want to first reiterate the appreciation for the work involved and in no way am I desiring to belittle or trivialize your work. For the first point, I understand on a foreign article, and in particular, one translated from the foreign wiki, that some or most of the references may be only in the foreign tongue. If, however, the English can be found it would help. See Wikipedia:Verifiability#Citing_non-English_sources. Second point, I have no issue fixing the ref's. I enjoy seeing an article in tight clean format with full citations and easy to verify information as much as is possible, as do I am sure most editors. If you plan or planned on doing this, please do not take my inference as an insult, as I merely try to improve and, only if needed, educate or remind others of things that are forgotten by editors, myself included. @Speednat: That's not a problem. Though, I'm uncertain as to whether many refs could be found in English, as they're quite obscure in many cases. We may have to tolerate the French references for a good while longer. I expect to be able to get round to tidying the French references up a bit, once I've translated all of the text for the 2015 Tour de France departure and finishing places which require significant expansion (i.e. more than about 20,000 bytes to be added). I have about three or four places to go. In particular, Amiens, Rennes and Vannes. I won't be touching Le Havre or Paris, as they're too big for me to consider going over them with a toothcomb whilst merging them and, with a quick scan, they're essentially complete from the French versions, anyway. This is before I'm likely to take another look at tidying the references for the translations which I've already done. I've already put a pointer in the edit summary of each article, for which I've finished translating the main text. I am, however, taking a break from it for a day or two, as I've been going at it for several months, non-stop, and I'm beginning to suffer the old endurance problem of "hitting the wall", a bit. My intention is to do as clean a translation as I can from the foreign language version of the article, and provide the references and formatting in the correct locations. I like to avoid the edit conflict scenario where data ends up being lost. And..I totally understand the lack of English sources. Just that "if" they are there, and I am sure most of the article will have mainly French sources for all but the barest of facts, except things associated with the archaelogical side of the area. Places in Cumbria

Hallo, I see you're working your way through places in Cumbria, adding infoboxes. Could I suggest that you include the District and the civil parish in the infobox, when they are obvious from the text of the article? I noticed one or two places on my watchlist yesterday, then Slack Head and Sandside, Beetham today. I'll tweak those two, but how about including those two bits of information in future? Thanks. @PamD: Thanks for your concern. I'm very much aware of the situation, and I hope to get there eventually. I'm concerned with making sure the coordinates, OS gridrefs & Commons links with the Geograph photos are all linked together at the moment. Give me a week or two, and I hope to have the time available to fill in the few hundred infoboxes with parishes, shire districts, postcodes, dialling codes, constituencies etc. Though, in some cases, I'll have to find the best online data sources and figure out the workflow, first.
