High head hydroelectric proposal edit

In August, 2011, Ellergreen Hydro, Kendal, Cumbria, proposed a 900kW high head hydroelectric scheme for Scandale Beck. [1]

Anglers Trust has raised strong objections to the proposal. [2]

Scandale Beck is an important nursery for wild brown trout and salmon also spawn in the lower reaches. This small spate stream is already subject to highly variable flows and naturally experiences prolonged periods of low flow. The scheme would further deplete the water flow over some 3km of beck, much of it through a pristine gorge of falls and deep pools. The potential exists to impact upon the population dynamics of brown trout throughout the whole stream let alone the overall ecological impact upon the depleted section. WADAA, SCRT and FSCCA have raised strong objections to the scheme highlighting these concerns and arguing that existing survey data is completely inadequate to allow any realistic impact assessment to be made. We now wait for decisions from the EA and the LDNPA Planners.
