WP:NCORP-specific SA table script

I feel like a bit of a script kiddie based off the current version, but I've got a version of an NCORP-specific thing at User:Red-tailed hawk/SATG CORP.js. It currently does conflict with the standard SA table generator (I can't have both scripts loaded at once without both breaking), but it works when loaded alone. I'll have to dig a bit more in to get the NCORP-specific script to be loaded successfully at the same time as the standard SA table generator, but I'll keep you updated. — Red-tailed hawk (nest) 05:51, 25 September 2022 (UTC)

Azerbaijan dictator

Hello, Dr vulpes,

Just FYI but on the article for Ilham Aliyev, it is mentioned several times that some people see him as a dictator. I think this is a discussion for RFD where editors can offer arguments and discuss the issue rather than a case for speedy deletion as this redirect has been around for a while. But I'm not going to untag it twice, I'll let another admin respond. Liz Read! Talk! 23:14, 25 September 2022 (UTC)

It's also important for you to notify Buidhe that a page they created has been tagged for deletion. Liz Read! Talk! 23:16, 25 September 2022 (UTC)
Yeah you're right @Liz, sorry about that. I'm still a little blah with all the rules around living people. Thanks for reaching out, I'll be more conservative with my nominations in the future. Dr vulpes (💬📝) 00:40, 26 September 2022 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Los Beat 4

Hello, Dr vulpes,

Once again, you shouldn't be closing AFD discussions that you start unless you withdraw your nomination. If you change your mind about an AFD nomination, please make a actual statement saying you are withdrawing your nomination. Without doing this, it's a clear conflict-of-interest. No one "voting" on an AFD or making a nomination should be closing a discussion unless a) you say that you have withdrawn your nomination (actually stating this) and b) there are no editors advocating "Delete". If even one editor is advocating a different option that "Keep", you can't close a discussion early.

I've noticed that you have recently closed several AFDs that you started. You might look at this reflectively and consider whether or not you are making good judgment about which articles to suggest be deleted because not all of your nominations have the support of your fellow editors. It's better to be judicious about selecting the least promising articles, it's about quality of nominations, not quantity. Thank you again for all of your work on the project. Liz Read! Question about upgrading article status

Hey Dr. Got something to bring to your attention. After looking over Disappointment Lake, I found the WikiProject: Lakes. I was looking over the material, and saw that there were 2 articles that were rated as "stubs", yet considered "top importance" to the project. So I looked into one of them - Underground Lakes. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Underground_lake)

Long story short, I've attempted an overhaul of that article to try and upgrade it from Stub-class. How do I go about requesting a review of its classification? If you could take a look at the article, do you think it's any better than a stub-class now?

Thanks, --PhotogenicScientist (talk) 18:38, 29 September 2022 (UTC)

Hey @PhotogenicScientist, check out the assessment guidelines and then change the class value on the talk page. You can find all the variables for the template on it's documentation page. Just go ahead and change the value as you see if and the system will update the WikiProject Lakes page automatically. Dr vulpes (💬📝) 21:30, 29 September 2022 (UTC)

DYK for Mary Ridge

On 13 October 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Mary Ridge, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Mary Ridge blew up the Liberator on her first encounter with Blake's 7, and killed off the crew on her last? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Mary Ridge. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Mary Ridge), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

AfD closure

Whilst looking for pages to review for NPP I just stumbled across Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Albert Sack and wanted to flag that given you'd !voted, you shouldn't really have also closed it as per WP:NACINV. -Kj cheetham (talk) 12:36, 16 October 2022 (UTC)

Hey @Kj cheetham, just wanted to make sure I didn't screw this up because I've messed up on closing AfDs before. I thought it was ok to close the AfD because I withdrew the nomination as per WP:WDAFD. It's still a bit early in the morning so if I'm missing something obvious that's my bad. Dr vulpes (💬📝) 17:01, 16 October 2022 (UTC)
Hi Dr vulpes, To be honest it's partly my mistake that I didn't notice you were also the nominator! It wasn't clear at all to me you were withdrawing, as you'd marked your !vote like a regular "keep" - I'd recommend making it more obvious in the future (as per WP:WDAFD). In any case, that should have been a speedy keep close as per WP:CSK #1, ideally clarifying in the closing statement the reason. Keep up the good work overall though! -Kj cheetham (talk) 17:07, 16 October 2022 (UTC)
Thanks! Yeah I realized that I needed to put the "withdrawn by nominator" line in there literally in the next AfD of mine I closed. Thanks for nudging me towards the correct way of doing things. Dr vulpes (💬📝) 17:34, 16 October 2022 (UTC)

Source assessment table

Hey! I noticed that you added a "source assessment table" as part of your rationale at an AFD. Mind telling me where you found this (or if you just created it right then and there)? I really like how it basically summarized the source based on the 3 main guidelines, independent, reliable, and significant coverage. I'd say it would actually really help show whether or not an article is truly notable based on the sources per WP:GNG. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 19:16, 17 October 2022 (UTC)

o yeah I only saw this recently and fell in love, it's hard to be nit picky when it's all laid out like that. It's the Source assess table template and I use the userscript from DannyS712 to help fill it out. User:Red-tailed hawk has also made a script for WP:NCORP. Dr vulpes (💬📝) 21:03, 17 October 2022 (UTC)
@Blaze Wolf: Just as a heads up, there is a known bug with my script that it sometimes completely breaks both itself and the userscript from DannyS712 when both are installed. I tend to uninstall/re-install the appropriate script as-needed. — Red-tailed hawk (nest) 23:14, 17 October 2022 (UTC)

Auto-add IUCN status?

I spoke to the IUCN a while ago and they'd be okay having their redlist statuses auto-added to the infobox of articles. I see you are interested in plant statuses; is this something you'd be interested in? HLHJ (talk) 03:32, 16 October 2022 (UTC)

Yeah that would be something that I would be interested in helping out with and would be a really useful addition. I was going to do with the the TNC statuses using a bot so I wrote a request for that but during that discussion it was suggested that I write a Lua module to do it so it could be added to the Autotaxbox and update the ~250k articles that way instead of having a bot check for updates and have to comb over the articles again. Any ideas on how to best move forward? I was thinking about trying to maybe update the data over at wikipseices and link them that way but I've never done this sort of thing before so I'm a little lost. As of right now I can access the IUCN api and pull down the information about we need, it's just the next step of getting it in the articles that has me a bit stumped. Dr vulpes (💬📝) 03:42, 16 October 2022 (UTC)
Thank you for the links. I see what you mean. The data would need to be accessed by the Speciesbox template, but it can't go in the taxonomy template pages (e.g. Template:Taxonomy/Ectopistes) like the Autotaxbox data, as redlist data is at the species level, not any higher taxon. Shall I post a query to the Autotaxbox discussion about where best to put it? That seems like the next step, since you can pull the needed info. Then there's reformatting the data to be transferred, setting up a bot to do that reformatting/editing, and making an edit to the Speciesbox template to draw on the new data. That all seems doable, once we know where the data goes.
It would also be good to automatically add things to the subcats of Category:Endangered species by reason they are threatened. That might be harder, depending on the IUCN API. Does it have machine-readable reasons-why-threatened? HLHJ (talk) 23:27, 19 October 2022 (UTC)

Project news

Our efforts to improve the coverage of lichens and lichenology on Wikipedia continue. Among this month's accomplishments:

  • Biographical articles now exist for each winner of the Acharius Medal, which is awarded in recognition of lifetime achievements in lichenology.
  • The glossary of lichen terms has been moved to article space, and now contains well over 100 entries. There's still plenty of room for expansion though!
  • We've tagged another 250+ articles, categories and templates as being under the purview of the task force.
  • Work has continued on converting those articles which are still using old "taxobox" templates to the newer automatic taxobox and speciesbox templates. There are now only 25 left to modify.
  • Dozens of articles have been created for genera and species of lichen and lichenicolous fungi.

Screenshot showing impact of DYKs on article viewing numbers

If you're looking for a reason to get an article onto Wikipedia's main page, look no further than this screenshot. It shows the views for the three project articles that were featured in the DYK section in October. Of particular interest is the corresponding spike in views of our lichen article (shown by the blue line), as people clicked through to learn more. We're educating the general public, a few thousand people at a time!

Question about article existence criteria

Hey @Dr vulpes. I'm puzzling over an issue that I can't seem to figure out, and I was wondering if you could provide an opinion on the matter.

In looking at two articles, Amoriguard and Cenocell, a general assessment leads me to believe they could be deleted. The articles themselves have a few notable problems:

  • They're both stub-size, and have very few reliable sources
  • They're both written in non-neutral language, and have major contributions from users who have documented Conflicts of Interest
  • They don't really convey the notability of their subject on reading

Looking outside the article content itself, I see more reasons they may not deserve their own articles:

  • Web searches for each turn up very few results - their total online presence appears to be a few scientific papers, manufacturer advertisements/blogs, and local news stories that mention them
  • The article doesn't appear to meet notability guidelines in WP:N
  • There are a couple things the article is, that Wikipedia doesn't allow, like WP:NOTADVERT WP:NOTTEXTBOOK

And yet, I'm not confident these articles can or should be deleted:

What do you think could be done in a situation like this? PhotogenicScientist (talk) 15:08, 17 November 2022 (UTC)

Hey @PhotogenicScientist,
I would just send it to AfD with a review of the sources. The articles author also authored the article on the inventor of these products and hasn't been active since. If these products/inventions were notable then there would be a lot more stuff about them. For example if you search Google scholar for "concrete replacement fly ash" you find a lot of hits even for properties of unique types of concrete. So with Cenocell there should be a lot more information about it than just a patent and a press release. I can't find an academic article or conference publication that talks about it or the process for making it. I also checked the authors and didn't see anything that would look like it might be about Cenocell. I don't hold patents very high when establishing notability, anyone can get one. I ran into the same roadblocks with Amoriguard. Everything I found about it was related to the company and not to it's invention or manufacturing process. There is a Forbes Africa article that mentions in passing but that's not a source that is normally viewed as reliable. I think it might be a good idea to ask someone over at WP:ENGINEERING or Wikipedia:WikiProject Civil engineering. Since I'm not a civil engineer there's a slight chance that these are notable and we just don't know enough about the subject to know where to look to find sources.
Dr vulpes (💬📝) 23:09, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
Wikiprojects seem a bit daunting to understand... it seems each project is organized a little differently, so I'm not sure where at WP:ENGINEERING would be the best place to start a discussion like this. I checked that project's talk page, but it seems pretty dead.
I guess AfD would be the next step. I'm also a bit wary of wading into that, though - I'm not sure what kind of quality is expected of submissions. Do you think what I've written above would make a sufficient submission? PhotogenicScientist (talk) 14:24, 18 November 2022 (UTC)

December newsletter

SYMBIOSIS: The lichen task force newsletter — December 2022
A look at what we've accomplished, working together

Happy holidays! Regardless of which holidays you choose to celebrate, here's hoping they're enjoyable.

As we reach the end of our first six months, we can be proud of the progress we've made to date – particularly considering the tiny size of our task force. We now have more than 4,100 articles, categories, templates and redirects under our watch. We've created a sizeable glossary (with more entries being added every day), whittled down the project's cleanup listing, and added biographies about a number of prominent lichenologists. To date, we have one Featured Article and 23 Good Articles. Clearly, there's plenty more to do, but we're off to a solid start. Here's to a productive new year!

  • Rebecca Yahr and Gyalectidium yahriae – a dual hook about a lichenologist and the species named after her
Project news

Editors have been busy over the past month:

  • The glossary of lichen terms has come along in leaps and bounds, and now contains several hundred entries.
  • An expanded list of "missing lichenologists" has been created and work has begun on associated articles.
  • All lichen taxa articles have now been converted to the automatic taxobox system, making this project one of the very few to have finished all such conversions. This should make it much easier to stay on top of future taxonomic updates.
  • Articles have been created for dozens of genera and species of lichen and lichenicolous fungi.
Newsletter challenge

A sentence in our Cladonia squamosa article was challenged back in 2014(!!) when a reader discovered that the supplied source did not corroborate the information. The editor who finds a valid source for the sentence (or corrects the information as necessary) and, in addition, replaces any redlinks with appropriate links to our new glossary of lichen terms will get public kudos in the next newsletter.

Got a suggestion? A correction? Something you'd like to see included in a future issue? Drop a note at the Tip Line with your ideas!
