Python food

edit

Hi Dora Nichov! I saw your recent edit to Python reticulatus. Are you sure that those snakes have not been reported to have eaten porcupines an pangolins? Because to me, and I've authored many snake articles, it sounds strange enough to be true. Of course, for the snake, regurgitating a porcupine at any point during the swallowing process would probably be fatal. (PS -- You can answer here as I've temporarily added your talk page to my watchlist). --Jwinius 11:47, 18 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hmmm... I just did some research, and I suppose you can put the porcupine part back, because I saw a source that said "a dead reticulated python was found with pocupine quills sticking out of it". As for pangolins, I cannot find any information right now. They do not seem to be normal python food, and pythons don't seem to be their normal enemies. Dora Nichov 11:55, 18 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
That's the danger of eating a porcupine. However, as long as the snake does not regurgitate I don't see a problem. In another example, I know that the African brush-tailed porcupine, Atherurus africanus, has also been on the menu of the gaboon viper, Bitis gabonica. As for pangolins, they doesn't seem like normal python fodder to me either, but they aren't much larger than those porcupines and they don't have any sharp quills for the snake to contend with. Also P. reticulatus is much larger than B. gabonica, so the size of these two prey items would definitely not be a problem. I admit that the contributor gave no reference for these particular food items, but I see no reason to doubt/remove the statement off hand. --Jwinius 13:11, 18 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

It's "original research". Such strange food items (really, few animals fancy making a meal out of either animal) should require a source of some sort. Well known prey, say, birds and monkeys, may not need sources, but more exotic items should. Dora Nichov 14:08, 18 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

There's no reason to believe this falls under the heading of original research, and this information does not strike me as something that somebody just made up. I too would prefer a reference, but as I said before, I know of another smaller species that has been known to eat porcupines, and I can only image that eating a pangolin would require less effort from (and be less hazardous for) a sizeable P. reticulatus. Or, are you an expert in this subject? --Jwinius 14:58, 18 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

I admit, I'm not a true expert, I'm merely a fennec fox that has read a lot about other animals. I believe it's safe to put porcupines back into its food sources, as I recall having seen footage of a emerald tree boa attacking a tree porcupine. It failed and got a mouthful of quills instead, but it shows that certain snakes will definitely eat porcupines when they get the chance. I believe I'm right to say snakes will basically eat any other animal they can catch. So, theoretically, such a large species of snake could eat a pangolin, although softer prey might be easier to swallow. Because snakes swallow prey whole, the armor may provide less of a challenge. And if the snake doesn't regurgitate, it should be safe from the pangolin's blade-like scales, or at least suffer only minor wounds. We can imagine a python swallowing a pangolin, but until any information turns up, we cannot be sure if this actually happens. Many things seem plausible, but it may not be the case. Even if this does happen, no evidence exists that pythons eat pangolins on a regular basis, and one or two cases doesn't prove that pangolins are normal prey, as was suggested in the original article. Vandalisms

edit

I can't beleive I'm saying this, but stop being a vandal. User-made expansion packs like Zoo Tycoon 2: Worldwide Wonders are not notable. In future, if you want to help out, add template:speedydelete to pages like this. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Cuddly Panda (talkcontribs) 08:50, 26 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

What did I do? Dora Nichov 10:53, 26 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Helped edit the fanmade Zoo Tycoon expansion pages. Sorry, i warned everyone who edited them (not like with reporting, though). Oh, and may I interest you in joining the Zoo Tycoon taskforce? ----- Cuddly Panda (talk · contribs) review me! | join the Zoo Tycoon taskforce! 09:14, 3 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
ZT taskforce was sadly deleted. Your talk page is a little messy, do you want me to archive it? (means move them onto a non-editable page that can be looked at for reference). Was I banned from Zoo Tycoon Volcano? Oh and I archived your talk page. Like it? ----- Cuddly Panda (talk · contribs) review me! | join the Zoo Tycoon taskforce! 11:38, 11 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

I don't think so... We're still discussing that. Thanks for the archiving. I personally think you and Spino may have both overreacted. I think we staff agree that your PM to him may have been a little too negative. Although ZTV tolerates criticism, that was a bit... too much maybe. If you're angry at the site, you can always let off steam at the flaming forum, we're not ZA, we won't track you down to see if you've been flaming us, and if we do we won't ban you for flaming us at another site. Dora Nichov 08:52, 12 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Oh right, sorry but I had to edit that part in your sig out... (you know the "everyone's favorite topic closer"?) And we have reopened the topic. Dora Nichov 09:40, 12 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

But I still can't access the site. I can't ven view as an unregistered. The Flaming Forum was a failure. And ZA has been offline for ages, despite promises for a revival. Oh, and no prob for the archiving. ----- Cuddly Panda (talk · contribs) review me! | join the Zoo Tycoon taskforce! 03:00, 13 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Really? Then I think you may have really been banned... we staff took a vote, and unfortunately "IP ban" got the most votes (though I didn't vote that), but I didn't know they have already taken action... Dora Nichov 03:16, 13 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Aah, yes, I can understand that. Never mind. There are other sites. ----- Cuddly Panda (talk · contribs) review me! | join the Zoo Tycoon taskforce! 01:51, 14 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hello there.

Hello Fennec Nichov. I would like you to tell your buddies over at ZT Volcano that I would like to request a ban lift. I will bring my criticisms down a notch, and, if I'm feeling genrous, might make a new banner instead of that awful pixelated one you have at the moment. ----- Cuddly Panda (talk · contribs) review me! |my chatroom] 11:57, 18 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

I'm not sure if it'll work, but I'll try my best... Dora Nichov (talk) 12:32, 18 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

The thing is, the main thing that got you banned was not your criticisms (though it did eventually lead to the ban), but because you flamed a mod in a PM... Dora Nichov (talk) 12:35, 18 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

"Stories" sub-page

edit

Hey there! You might want to consider moving (or at least backing up) your "Stories" subpage somewhere else, e.g. you might want to check out Google Docs which is totally free, and keeps a revision history of your documents just like Wikipedia. One could make the case that it's not an appropriate usage of Wikipedia server space, since you aren't using the page to help improve Wikipedia, etc.

I'm not going to make a big deal out of it, and I think most editors would just let it go too. But just a word of advice, since I am not entirely sure it would survive an MfD nomination. I'd hate for you to come back one day and all your work was gone!  :) --Jaysweet (talk) 16:46, 23 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Books you like

edit

Hey, I was just looking at your "Books I like" section and I saw that all those books are my favourites too! There's a good book you should try, it's called Dinosaurs: The Most Complete, Up-to-Date Encyclopedia for Dinosaur Lovers of All Ages by Thomas R. Holtz, Jr., illustrations by Luis Rey. At the back, there's a whole list of ALL the dinosaurs discovered so far. All! Albeit, there isn't all the pterosaurs or marine life or Paleozoic life or Cenozoic life but what the hell. Oh, and, BTW I'm the guy who's on your Stories talk page. The one who wants more!!! Stories, I mean.

Oh yeah that's my favorite book now. Dora Nichov (talk) 05:11, 18 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
