You may want to discuss some of the external link removals. Some of the dog pages are pretty fiercely defended and you may be in for a battle. spryde | talk 03:44, 19 August 2008 (UTC

Spryde - so far, no one seems to have challenged my removal of the external links. If someone does do that for a particular breed, I will discuss it with that person in the relevant discussion page and arrive at a consensus. I have seen several other dog breed pages on Wikipedia that have had only a link to DMOZ in the External Links section even before I joined Wikipedia. In any case, thanks for the heads up on this. I appreciate it. Dogtrainernyc (talk) 04:11, 19 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
Replacing all external links with a single link to the DMOZ category may be against our guidelines and certainly doesn't appear to be standard. It is potentially problematic for several reasons. For one thing, we can't control what DMOZ chooses to include in their lists of links, and we have certain standards for our own external links; lists of external links are supposed to be relevant to the article content. For another, DMOZ has some issues with its editors being non-neutral in their selection (as stated in the article about them). I would strongly suggest that you stop doing this, at the very least until there has been some discussion about it. I've made a request on WP:ANI as well as at Wikipedia talk:External links. I agree with Exploding Boy. The way to improve the external links lists is to edit them to remove inappropriate links and to add new more appropriate links, not to replace them with DMOZ links. -- The Anome (talk) 17:44, 23 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
Absolutely. There are a lot of articles with too many links, inappropriate links, etc, but the solution is as above. Doug Weller (talk) 18:59, 23 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Replacing external links with a carefully chosen DMOZ category is certainly not against the guidelines. In fact, it is specifically authorized in WP:ELMAYBE #3: "Where editors have not reached consensus on an appropriate list of links, a link to a well-chosen web directory category could be used until such consensus can be reached. The Open Directory Project is often a neutral candidate, and may be added using the Dogtrainernyc at Curlie template."

In many cases, however, we're better off just deleting the spam (and lists of local/regional dog clubs is spam for these purposes) and skipping the DMOZ link. WhatamIdoing (talk) 20:03, 24 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
