Thank You edit

Hello Djembayz- Thank you for the kind words about the "Sparrowhawk" Article, much appreciated. I have joined Project Ships as you may have noticed by now, and will contribute as time allows. I have a stub targeted for expansion to a full article in early March. Question: I am replying to you in this manner on your Talk Page because I could not figure out how to start a new message on an editor/admin Talk page. This template was rejected when placed on my Talk page. Need some on this .. thanks! merlynne6 (talk) 01:49, 15 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Can someone help respond to this question from (talk)? I don't know how to use the templates. Djembayz (talk) 02:22, 15 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Merlynn6 should have been able to put a "help me" template on their own user talk page. I'll respond over there and ask. Banaticus (talk) 03:21, 15 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, but I'm just letting you know of the discussion I started here about your DYK. Regards, JamieS93 15:37, 21 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Don't be disheartened by the "incident" over the Sea Clipper DYK. Mistakes were made all round by a number of editors (including me). Hopefully all will have learnt from this one. No major damage has been done to Wikipedia and it appears that the DYK will count towards your total. Get to 25 and you get a medal!  . Mjroots (talk) 09:17, 22 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Ship articles edit

My advice would be to create a personal sandbox where you can work an article up in relative peace, and then ask for comments from editors when you need to. This is my ships sandbox. Mjroots (talk) 17:41, 22 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Reviewer granted edit

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

For the guideline on reviewing, see Wikipedia:Reviewing. Being granted reviewer rights doesn't change how you can edit articles even with pending changes. The general help page on pending changes can be found here, and the general policy for the trial can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 21:00, 29 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Re: File source problems with uploaded images from pre-1923 book edit

All these items have been tagged as my own photos of a pre-1923 book. If further info is required, pls. let me know.
An example page for pre-1923 books would be helpful, using the specific phrase "your own photograph of public domain material, i.e., a pre-1923 book" rather than the more ambiguous and confusing phrase "who created the content." (What content, the drawing itself? The photograph of the drawing? etc.)

Invitation to join Wiki project:ships edit

Hi Djembayz, thanks for the invite. However, I am sort of on a ship project already, working primarily on Royal Navy vessels of the 1793-1815 era. Within that I find myself writing new articles, adding refs to existing articles, expanding stubs, and contributing the occasional DYK. Under the new rules of DYKs, I will start looking for DYK articles to evaluate. Regards, Acad Ronin (talk) 02:25, 10 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Mimosa (ship) edit

Thanks for adding an infobox to Mimosa (ship). I assume you read the article. Bearing in mind its content, would you agree that having a Union Flag displayed so prominently may be seen as a touch insensitive?. Do you know of any other infoboxen that may be more suitable? Daicaregos (talk) 07:56, 9 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Changed it to the ensign-- as would be displayed on a ship. Missed the "civil" tag, and thus we had the landlubber's flag instead. The flag a ship flies is based on the ship's nationality, indicating you are not a pirate. Perhaps the correction appears less grating. Djembayz (talk) 23:59, 9 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Matthew Turner edit

Hi Djembayz, thanks for adding all that material to the Matthew Turner (shipbuilder) article, as it is likely to appear on the main page in the DYK section within the week, it looks a lot more complete now. Only one quibble referring to the Galilee, it was the Carnegie that was built virtually without magnetic materials, designed by Henry J. Gielow and built at the Tebo Yacht Basin. The Galilee had all the magnetic material removed that could be during her period of charter, but the remaining iron bolts meant that constant corrections were required that slowed the observations down and reduced their accuracy, which was why the Carnegie was built. Cheers, Mikenorton (talk) 10:32, 4 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hi Mike, glad we were able to get this one in in time for the DYK. Matthew Turner was a major player, and I was surprised he didn't have an article. What you're saying about Galilee makes sense, wasn't sure why there would be iron bolts rather than wooden pegs but figured it must be structural, should have gone back and re-read. Always good to have a second set of eyes, esp. when adding a bunch of cites.
Drop me a note if you decide to start more old sailing ship articles! I see you're able to extract a quick general overview from these web sources easier than I can. I have good access to print and can add some details if you get a basic article going. Collaboration would make it a bunch quicker. Cheers, Djembayz (talk) 21:03, 4 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
Nothing planned at the moment, the ship articles got started because of the geophysical observations, but they were fun to do - I should expand the Carnegie, now that I've found the Carnegie Institute's webpages on the cruises. Two of Turner's boats did catch my eye however, the Tolna (and the remarkable Countess Festetics de Tolna [1]) and the Pitcairn (and the missionary John I. Tay [2]), so I might do something on them, if so I'll let you know. Cheers, Mikenorton (talk) 00:20, 9 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Loch Line edit

Hi there, I have done a fair bit of research about the Loch Line, and don't believe that Loch Awe was ever owned by Aitken and Lilburn (who owned the company). Can you find a reliable source? Have a look at this site: http://www.wrecksite.eu/wreck.aspx?156633 which appears to show the historic owners of Loch Awe and is a very reliable site. Let me know what you think?

Cheers, Spy007au (talk) 02:51, 2 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

That's quite a site! Thanks for pointing it out. Have not researched the Loch Line, so I leave that part to you. Now that I know the owners to look for, here's what else I find: G.H. Payne, 1872-1877, Owner or consignee. C. Hoult, 1876, Owner; 1878-1879, Owner or consignee. J. & R. Wilson, Owner or consignee, 1877-79; Owner, 1878-1890. (Didn't check year by year after 1878, just sampled. Mystic Seaport Ship and Yacht Register List, http://library.mysticseaport.org/initiative/VSearchIndex.cfm) Perhaps you recognize these names?
One more question: any other Loch Line ships here? http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:State_Library_of_Queensland/Reports/Ship_categories Djembayz (talk) 15:01, 2 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
No worries, I remove Loch Awe from the Loch Line article as it clearly does not belong there. Loch Awe has a very interesting history, so perhaps you should consider writing an article about it?

The Loch Line only owned 25 ships in its fleet, and they are all identified in the article - so there are no more from the above list.

Happy editing and regards, Spy007au (talk) 00:55, 3 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Rated aaarrrrr edit

While I wasn't inspired to write (or even consider writing, actuallly :( ) an article on clippers, I did want to thank you for your links to their history. I've got an interest in 19th Century shipping for private research, so they're a help. Any thoughts on finding operators & builders of Boston/New England whalers, or of the early oil tankers? TREKphiler any time you're ready, Uhura 09:14, 22 April 2011 (UTC) (P.S. You realize what the MPAA listing for every pirate movie has to be, don't you? ;p )Reply

Lots of possibilities. The Mystic Seaport link has search info for registers of merchant sail with info on ship owners and masters. Ship Index will let you search books for mentions of individual ships. Two questions: One, what format, print or online only? There are quite a few books on whaling and whalers, some with full view at Google books. I read more about sail, so don't know much about tankers, though Thomas W. Lawson (ship) was one very early oil tanker :) (User:Haus would likely know a bit about tankers ...) If you want to trace out the details about a specific owner or ship, the Google Books search can pull out anecdotal info/factoids for you-- but it is my observation that you'll probably want to do some fact checking on this stuff. That is what the maritime historians know how to do. Two: if you want to go beyond websites, have you tried looking at a maritime museum library, Mystic Seaport library, or MIT for the tanker/ocean engineering end? You can get lots of fascinating small facts and leads from online newspaper databases, free and paid, but again, if you want reliable info you probably are looking for maritime history materials. Some of that will be print only. I'd look at the Mystic Seaport website first, if there's no maritime museum near you in the prairies :) Djembayz (talk) 02:43, 23 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
Thanks a bunch. :D I'm not too worried about specifics, since I'm working in fiction; reasonably correct names & dates I can build around is plenty. :)
I should say about tankers, I had in mind the very early ones. Tanker might not even be the word: they carried barrels of oil IIRC. This was, again IIRC, mid- or late-19h Century; sail, too, I think. No worries if you never heard of it; I collect trivial oddities like this all the time. ;p I'll give Haus a ping, too.
Thx again. Cheers. TREKphiler any time you're ready, Uhura 03:16, 23 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
After a quick glance at this & this, I should thank you again. ;p That's even better than I hoped. :D TREKphiler any time you're ready, Uhura 03:40, 23 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
If you're including the shipment of whale oil in barrels, then here's one for you: Harriet Hoxie (clipper). There's a microfilm narrative of one of its voyages you might find interesting ... let me know if you'd like to look at it. Also, The Story of the New England Whalers. Djembayz (talk) 15:28, 23 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
You're just a vault of great info, aren't you? :D I don't need specifics ATM (& haven't decided if I ever will, tho the idea of a story about an escaped slave on a whaler or "tanker" has crossed my mind :) ). If it's on microfilm, I should be able to get my local library to order it in, if I ever feel the need. Can you say where the Smith account from the Hoxie page is held? Maritime transport edit

Hey DJ. I'm wondering if you'd have any interest in trying to breathe some life into the maritime transport task force. A fundamental problem with sailors working on wikipedia is that we tend to disappear for months on end, which hampers momentum building up. If you're interested, I think there's a lot of opportunity for outreach to existing WP editors, people associated with maritime academies, and users of prevalent maritime blogs, and subsequently coaching new users. No pressure - but it occurred to me that it might fall into your areas of interest. Cheers. HausTalk 06:35, 2 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

New page patrol – Survey Invitation

Hello Djembayz/Archive 2011! The WMF is currently developing new tools to make new page patrolling much easier. Whether you have patrolled many pages or only a few, we now need to know about your experience. The survey takes only 6 minutes, and the information you provide will not be shared with third parties other than to assist us in analyzing the results of the survey; the WMF will not use the information to identify you.

  • If this invitation also appears on other accounts you may have, please complete the survey once only.
  • If this has been sent to you in error and you have never patrolled new pages, please ignore it.

Please click HERE to take part.
Many thanks in advance for providing this essential feedback.

Help with references for David Margolis (artist) edit

{{Helpme}} Using ProveIt to add references; attempted to delete a few references from my list on ProveIt, now all I can add is bare URLs. Can't seem to turn ProveIt off, either. Can someone fix this somehow?

I've never used ProveIt, so I don't have a direct answer, however, I suspect that the good people at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical) are likely to know more.
Neither have I, but proveit has a talk page - User talk:ProveIt GT - best to ask there.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 16:24, 29 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, didn't think of that. Djembayz (talk) 16:28, 29 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

National Archives ExtravaSCANza edit

You are invited to the National Archives ExtravaSCANza, taking place every day next week from January 4–7, Wednesday to Saturday, in College Park, Maryland (Washington, DC metro area). Come help me cap off my stint as Wikipedian in Residence at the National Archives with one last success!

This will be a casual working event in which Wikipedians are getting together to scan interesting documents at the National Archives related to a different theme each day—currently: spaceflight, women's suffrage, Chile, and battleships—for use on Wikipedia/Wikimedia Commons. The event is being held on multiple days, and in the evenings and weekend, so that as many locals and out-of-towners from nearby regions1 as possible can come. Please join us! 1 Wikipedians from DC, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Newark, New York City, and Pittsburgh have been invited.
