Bedford School edit

Hello there. I thought I'd introduce myself as we both seem to have an interest in editing the Bedford School Wiki page. I'm very grateful for your photos. I do hope that you don't mind that I edited the text to the postcard you just put up. The page is getting very large and I'm trying to find ways to trim it down a bit. I think that if people want to see which schools are included on the postcard then they can just click on the postcard to enlarge it. Do you have any other photos that you think might be interesting on the page ? Have a very good evening, and thank you very much once again. All the best.

I've changed the photo of the postcard you uploaded for a photo of the statue of William Harpur in St Paul's Square. It seems to make more sense in the context of that section of the Wiki article on Bedford School. I see you've also uploaded the postcard photo to the Wiki article on Public School (United Kingdom). I think it fits very well there. I do hope that you don't mind the change. I'd very much like a discussion with you about other photos that we might upload. If you can give a way to contact you (Email address ?) that would be excellent. Very many thanks. Vietnamvat.

Hi Vietnamvat,

Thank you for taking the time to explain your changes. Can I ask firstly why you removed my article from the page as it added to the history of what was once deemed a very prestigious school. Can I secondly point out to you that you replaced my picture (taken by myself) with a photo from the Harpur Centre which was Bedford Modern School's old building, not Bedford School. I would ask in future if you would not delete items from the page for no reason as wikipedia is a collaborative page and also to check the material you are adding to the page for factual correctness. I am reverting the changes made, however shortening the text. Please leave me a message on here before making any further edits. Thank you. Disclosure07

Hello again. First, I removed your photo because, as I explained, the photo I added in its place, of the statue of William Harpur, makes far more sense in the context of the history of the school. I understand why you put up the photo of your card, and I thank you very much for your interest. However, as I said, whilst it makes sense in the context of the Wiki article on public schools, it's really not the best use of space on this particular Wiki page.
You are, in fact, mistaken: the picture I put up in place of yours is not of the Harpur Centre. It's of the façade of the old building of Bedford School: what is now the tourist information centre in St Paul's Square. It therefore has a central place in the history of the school, whereas your postcard, whilst very interesting, does not.
I took on the task of working on this Wiki page last year because nobody seemed to have done anything with this page. It was, to be frank, a complete and utter embarrassment to anybody connected with the school. I have done hundreds (and I mean hundreds) of hours of work to improve this page and, whilst you're correct that Wiki is SUPPOSED to be collaborative, the reality is that very few people do most of the work, whilst a few people pop up occasionally to make a contribution. Sometimes those contributions are absolutely spot on. On this occasion, however, as I've explained above, it would be better to leave the picture of William Harpur in place. Space is now at a premium on this page and choices have to be made.
I really don't want to offend you in any way, and I very much hope that you're not upset.
I asked above if I could have some way of contacting you in order that we might work together. I would still be very keen to do this. Very many thanks. Vietnamvet.

I too am very passionate about Bedford School, as I am an old Bedfordian. I personally feel that my original addition/editing of the page caused offence which I feel is a great shame as we clearly both have good intentions. It is great to see that you have put so much work into the page and I too agree that maintenance of the wiki page for the school is essential. I would contest, however, what you deem as relevant and irrelevant history (I personally feel all history is relevant). Although William Harpur does have some relevance to the founding of the grammar school, the statue pictured (to my knowledge) was not on the original school building? From my understanding of history of the school, we were taught that the building in St Pauls square underwent extensive modifications to its interior and exterior before it found its later uses as the town hall & tourist centre. If this is the case was the statue added while the building was still the Grammar school or after (and if after should it be in the article)? I also would still contest the importance of Bedfords Schools original standing as one of the public schools of England: As the Russell group stature has importance to many top universities today the schools old classification into the public school bracket differentiated it from many other independent schools such as Bedford Modern school which was much less prestigious at the time.
While I do not always have the time to contribute to the upkeep of the page I have been making additions (such as the original crest) since around 2006. I feel to best represent the school, collaborative efforts must be made to portray a wide and collective view. Again correct me if I'am wrong but I assume you have not been tasked by the school with the upkeep of the page? Even so Wikipedia states "An article is not considered to be owned by its creator or any other editor and is not vetted by any authority". We must work together to improve the page, therefore making decisions on what is kept in 'premium' space and what is relevant has to be open to discussion and not deleted just because a user disagrees that it should be there. I do feel there are a number of further modifications which should be made to the page, especially the reduction in length/relocation of the number of almuni as this currently takes up nearly 3/4's of the pages 'premium' space. Feel free to contact me at esr148@bham.ac.uk.
