How is it different from WP's default citation engine? edit

I tried both on a few links, and couldn't notice any differences. Are there? Cheers. — Guarapiranga  00:03, 23 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hi, @Guarapiranga! Web2Cit is a tool to collaboratively improve automatic citation generation. If you see no differences between the citation generated by WP's default citation engine (Citoid) and the citation generated by Web2Cit, chances are that nobody has configured Web2Cit for that website's domain... yet! You can go ahead and try to do it yourself. Please ask me or @Scann if you need any help. You can read our introduction user guide here, or look at what we've done at Wikimedia Hackathon 2022 this weekend here. You can also subscribe (watch) our News & Updates page to find out about upcoming workshops we will be organizing. Diegodlh (talk) 14:09, 23 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
Ah! Thanks. Missed the link to that page on the lede of the doc page (perhaps link it in the script page as well). I'll give it a go from now on. Cheers. — Guarapiranga  22:09, 23 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

Installation on meta edit

Works on all wikis if installed on metas common.js? -Gunyam (talk) 14:18, 16 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi, @Gunyam! Great question! I just learned yesterday, reading other user script's documentation, that this was possible. I think it should work, I'm not sure. Would you like to try it? If it works, feel free to add something to the documentation! Or let me know and I'll try to do it. Thank you! Diegodlh (talk) 14:39, 16 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
I tried converting [dailytimes] to cite web on bn:সেলিম ইউসুফ and add using cite button, it shows result from zotero only. -Gunyam (talk) 15:10, 16 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
I've checked adding the user script line to my global.js on Meta and I'm getting the Web2Cit checkbox and both citations (one from Citoid/Zotero, one from Web2Cit), both on en and bn Wikipedias.
Just to make sure, what do you mean with "it shows result from zotero only"? Are you getting only one citation? If you are getting two identical citations, it probably means Web2Cit is working, but no configuration has been defined for the website you are trying to cite. What is the exact URL you are trying to cite? Diegodlh (talk) 16:27, 16 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

"Common.js" -incorrect, "global.js" -correct. Now working. -Gunyam (talk) 16:43, 16 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Cool! Added a note to the script's documentation (here) mentioning your suggestion. Thanks! Diegodlh (talk) 19:06, 16 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Does not show option if the cite button contains basic and reuse only edit

as [as.wikipedia], awa [awa.wikipedia], bpy [bpy.wikipedia], dty [dty.wikipedia], etc. wikis contain cite button which includes only basic and reuse to create citations. Example article: as:আহোম বিবাহ পৰম্পৰা. Option to create citation automatically is not available in these wikis. If possible include. -Gunyam (talk) 23:34, 16 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi, @Gunyam. I imagine that's because either VisualEditor's Citation Tool or Citoid are not enabled on those wikis. Web2Cit depends on them being enabled to work.
You may read more about how to enable them here: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Citoid/Enabling_Citoid_on_your_wiki. See this Phabricator task requesting that Citoid be enabled on `pap` Wikipedia, for example: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T222956.
Hope this helps! Diegodlh (talk) 12:41, 17 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
