Hello Dbernwies, and welcome to Wikipedia. Your additions to Draft:Richard Trank have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. (To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues.

  • You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
  • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. (There is a college-level introduction to paraphrase, with examples, hosted by the Online Writing Lab of Purdue.) Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
  • Our primary policy on using copyrighted content is Wikipedia:Copyrights. You may also want to review Wikipedia:Copy-paste.
  • If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. Such a release must be done in a verifiable manner, so that the authority of the person purporting to release the copyright is evidenced. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
  • In very rare cases (that is, for sources that are PD or compatibly licensed) it may be possible to include greater portions of a source text. However, please seek help at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions, the help desk or the Teahouse before adding such content to the article. 99.9% of sources may not be added in this way, so it is necessary to seek confirmation first. If you do confirm that a source is public domain or compatibly licensed, you will still need to provide full attribution; see Wikipedia:Plagiarism for the steps you need to follow.
  • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps in Wikipedia:Translation#How to translate. See also Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia.

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. Moneytrees🌴Talk🌲Help out at CCI! 23:31, 15 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

ARBPIA 30/500

edit

Hi Dbernwies,

I must regretfully inform you that there is a rule on Wikipedia that says that users with less than 500 edits must not edit pages related to the Arab-Israeli conflict. Simon Wiesenthal Center and pages about its staff and projects, such as Abraham Cooper (rabbi), are covered by that rule. You can still comment on such pages' talk pages but you must not edit the pages themselves. ImTheIP (talk) 20:58, 29 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Your connection with the subjects you are writing about

edit

Hi - in this edit back in October, you seem to be adding a 'connected contributor' template to your own talk page. You didn't indicate the subjects that you were connected with, or the nature of your connection. The following links are essential reading for contributors who are connected to the subjects they write about: WP:COI and WP:PAID. It is important that you explain the nature of your connection, since undisclosed paid editing is a breach of the terms of use of this website, and even if you are not paid there are steps that you should take. I appreciate that using templates can be technically challenging, but you don't need to do that yourself - if you answer the following questions here on this talk page, I can help you with the formalities:

  • Which subjects you are writing about are you connected with?
  • Are you employed by any of these subjects in any capacity, or do you expect to receive remuneration in any form for your editing?

Please understand that if you continue editing about these subjects without addressing these questions, your account may be blocked from editing. Thanks for your attention. GirthSummit (blether) 18:12, 20 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi - I happen to know Rabbi Marvin Hier, who is the head of Simon Wiesenthal Center and Moriah Films. I am extremely interested in what they are achieving and that is why I created these pages. I am not employed by either The Center or Moriah Films nor am I receiving any financial compensation from them. I was really shocked at ITheIP edits for Moriah Films as he deleted most of the copy after the page had been verified. All I did was re-add the original copy with extra sources. I really do not want to be blocked so please let me know how I can improve these pages. Thanks Dbernwies (talk) 18:34, 20 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Dbernwies, OK - thank you for responding. If you know this person, then WP:COI applies to you, but it sounds like WP:PAID does not. Please read it, especially the guidance about how you should request changes to the articles on their talk pages rather than making them yourself. Would you like me to edit your user page to apply the connected contributer template?
If you ask the other editors what their concerns about your changes were, I expect that they will be willing to explain. This is a collaborative project - using talk pages to communicate with each other (as we are doing now) is central to how we operate. Best GirthSummit (blether) 20:14, 20 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Thanks so much Girth Summit. I would really appreciate if you could edit my user page to apply the connected contributer template. I do apologize for any inconvenience to any editors as I am new to all this and trying to navigate through it Dbernwies (talk) 22:07, 20 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Dbernwies, no problem - I'm in the UK, and on mobile now - I'll look at this in the morning. Please don't make any edits to the relevant pages in the meantime. Best GirthSummit (blether) 22:44, 20 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
OK Dbernwies - I have created a userpage for you, with a COI declaration indicating that you are connected to these subjects, since you indicate that you are personally acquainted with the head of the center and the film company. Since Richard Trank works for that same company, I have included that in the COI declaration.
Please read through the guidance at WP:COI carefully. You should not edit these articles directly, but you are welcome to make suggestions for improvements on the talk page. If you use an edit request to make the suggestion, other editors will be notified about your request and it will hopefully be addressed fairly quickly.
Some other advice and reading material I'd like to give you. First of all, we do not OWN the articles we write. Others may come along and change them afterwards. If it is sheer vandalism (e.g. inserting obscenities or anti-Semitic commentary) you are welcome to revert it, but in most circumstances you are expected to use the talk page to discuss it with them, rather than reinstating your preferred version of the page (which we call edit warring, and would not be permitted even if you didn't have a COI).
As I said above, this is a collaborative project - we need to communicate with each other. Lots of people have tried to give you advice and guidance above - I understand that the templated messages can be confusing and difficult to wade through when you're new, but you don't appear to have attempted to reply to any of them. If someone gives you some advice or guidance, reply to them; maybe thank them, or if you're not sure what they're trying to say, ask them to explain. You'll find that most people here are friendly and helpful; if you don't understand why they've decided to remove content, it might be because you are new and aren't yet familiar with all our editing guidelines. Just ask them to explain - they will probably be happy to do so. If you want to get someone's attention, you can notify them that you have mentioned them by using the PING function. The easiest way is to type u|TheirUsername, inside a pair of double curly brackets. If I wanted to ping you, I would type Dbernwies (go into edit mode to see what that looks like) - you would get a notification that I'd done it. You need to remember to sign your post though, in the same edit that you add the ping, or it won't be sent.
With regards to your draft article on Richard Trank - you are welcome to continue working on it as a draft, but if/when it is accepted into article space, the same expectation would apply as with the other articles - you should use the talk page to request changes, rather than making them yourself.
I think that's it for now. Please read through the stuff I've given you, let me know if you have any questions, and confirm that you have understood how you should go about editing on these subjects. Cheers GirthSummit (blether) 11:56, 21 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
User:Dbernwies - You write: "I really do not want to be blocked". Of course not. No one wants to be blocked. Is there a reason why you did not discuss or reply until now? Is there a reason why you didn't follow Bold, Revert, Discuss about the edits that you made? Is there a reason why you didn't respond at the Conflict of Interest Noticeboard? When an editor not only doesn't discuss their edits but has multiple chances and fails to discus, the regular editors draw either of two unfavorable conclusions. Either the editor who doesn't discuss is paid and is trying to hide their paid status, or the editor is not here to contribute constructively. It doesn't look good if you repeatedly fail to discuss. Is there a reason, or were you just lazy (and being lazy looks very much like being not here constructively)? Robert McClenon (talk) 16:38, 21 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for all the helpful advice Girth Summit. I now understand about making edits when an article is in public space. I will continue to work on Richard Trank draft until it is accepted into public space. Dbernwies (talk) 22:48, 21 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
