Speedy deletion nomination of Jym fitness

edit

A tag has been placed on Jym fitness requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about an organization or company, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for organizations and companies. You may also wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. ttonyb (talk) 06:14, 1 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Re: Deletion of Jym fitness

edit

Hi Dave,

I figured I'd send you a message directly as it might be a bit easier to discuss this here than on my heavily used talk page. Before I do though, I need to let you know how to sign your posts when leaving messages on talk pages. It's quite simple, just add four tilde characters after your comment (i.e. ~~~~), this will add a link to your username and a date and time. This helps others keep track of who is commenting and the time they left a message. You can experiment here if you like.

With Jym Fitness, if you can find some references to notable blogs then this would certainly help keep the article. However, as a rule we don't consider blogs to be reliable enough for an entry on Wikipedia. If the blog can be proven to be well known in the industry then it would help assert notability, however any references need to be verifiable and reliable. Our policy in regards to blogs is detailed at Wikipedia:Reliable sources#Self-published sources (online and paper).

However, I can totally understand your confusion as to why this article was deleted but another article that appears similar, Fitbit, would not be deleted. Deletion is one of those areas on Wikipedia that is extremely controversial and often confusing to outsiders - a number of other journalists have also commented on this, including The Daily Telegraph (UK), CNet, The Washington Post and The New York Times. However, we routinely delete articles from the encyclopedia through a variety of processes, which are:

  1. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion (allows for discussion of deletion)
  2. Wikipedia:Proposed deletion (allows for deletion without discussion, but gives others a chance to object)
  3. Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion (allows us to quickly delete nonsense or unsourced articles with no easy way of telling notability)
  4. Wikipedia:Office actions (a way of immediately removing defamatory material)

We also have a way of undeleting material, by a process called deletion review.

With the Jym fitness article, it was different to the Fitbit article because that has references to sources such as the MIT Review and TechCrunch. Unfortunately, Jym fitness doesn't have any of these more reliable sources. If there are articles in the mainstream press about Jym fitness, however, please let me know because then this would definitely help satisfy the notability criteria. As you are from the press you might be able to help me out here.

So you know, as an administrator I can actually undelete the article, but I would probably need to take it to articles for deletion, but given the somewhat controversial nature of deletions on Wikipedia I don't think the article would survive in it's current form. If you can provide me with evidence of why the article is notable, I am happy to restore the article and I can help you modify it to incorporate this material.

A final note: I am actually an Australian myself, if you have a journalistic inquiry and you want to speak to me about issues about Wikipedia off-wiki, then feel free to contact me directly on ta.bu.shi.da.yu at gmail.com. - Tbsdy (formerly Ta bu shi da yu) talk 03:38, 3 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi Tbsdy,

Thanks again for the help, Hopefully I sign off ok this time. I think for the time being the article best remain deleted until there are better sources and notability otherwise like you said it won't last long. How long can it stay deleted for is there a time frame I should work by??? Once it is notable enough to go onto Wiki your help would be greatly appreciated in making the article as suitable as it can be for Wiki.

Hopefully I can find some more notability so we can get this Aussie invention up on Wiki asap. Thanks again for your time and helping me learn.

Dave

No probs David, as far as I'm aware the deleted revisions don't expire (I can see revisions going back to 2005 that were deleted). - Tbsdy (formerly Ta bu shi da yu) talk 14:33, 5 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
