• IF you had applied your knowledge in such a way that I cannot wrong you in any way, that is probably the best bet for me not labeling that edit as vandalism, since the very essence of vandalism doesn't just lie in the willful application of an edit. It is also that very attempt of doing so without providing a reliable source of reference or citation that which I had based my interpretation of your "un-constructive" edit as a vandalism. For further details, please read up on the welcome section of Wikipedia to familiarize yourself with the inner workings to avoid being labeled as such again in future because a simple check of your own talkpage reveals that I am indeed not the first, therefore I most certainly and definitely won't be the last. Hello Dave. I suppose when I see something nominated for deletion, I dig just a bit harder. This time, I struck gold, as I simply could not even begin to think someone with her history would not have been written about somewheres. A perceived problem with the article is it listing EVERYTHING she ever did, and for whom, and where... and that is simply not required. Perhaps you might advise on the list which ones seem of particular note (I have already sourced several). I would like to then trim it to a partial list that shows some but not all. Talk pages

I'm slightly confused. Users can remove warnings from their talk pages, that's considered an acknowledgement they've read them. "Important exceptions may include declined unblock requests and confirmed sockpuppetry notices (while blocks are still in effect), or for anonymous editors, shared IP header templates." But that's basically all.

• Noted. And I've spoken to an admin who also agreed with me that it might be better to merge it into the main page of Secret societies in Singapore (which is filled with red-links!) instead of being by itself as in the case of another article, these pages tend to attract a lot of vandalism from IP editors. Also, bearing in mind that Wikipedia is an online Encyclopedia and that as much as possible we would want the articles to be sourced from WP:RS, of WP:NPOV and to be fully WP:VERIFY. Thus far, most if not all the details and history of these SSs are quite sketchy and most of these limited information are drawn from the Police archive which are in turn declassify and release to public by way of our National Library Board, and sometimes from our local newspaper. So, as I've mentioned before my take is to merge this with the article page of Secret societies in Singapore and work from there instead of breaking it down so many small bits. I am rather surprised and disappointed that a Singaporean would actually doubt the notability of some of Singapore's largest and most notorious secret societies, who once formed a very important aspect of social life for the local Chinese population for decades. Flagging an item for speedy deletion is a very drastic move, and notable/verifiable information can easily disappear if no one else happens to see it in time. If the bone of your contention is actually over the fact that the article is not well developed yet, then you are most welcome to begin work on expanding it, dropping a comment in the talkpage, inform the sg community, or at least ask the article creator and/or main contributors about their intentions. Surely all of these actions are much more productive than an abuse of the speedy deletion tag.--Huaiwei (talk) 01:33, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

Redlinks

Hi Dave,

I noticed you've been removing some redlinks; sometimes, though, a redlink can be appropriate (see WP:REDLINK, and especially the subsection When to create redlinks, for more information), if a topic is article-worthy but the editor simply doesn't have the time or ability to make an article just yet; redlinks can help signal readers and other editors of an area that needs work. Anyway, personally, I agree with this removal (since Hui Jiang is probably something that never needs an article, it's just another name of something that already exists), but maybe not the removal of links to S. Robert Ramsey here (I didn't undo it because most WPians might find Ramsey's notability borderline, but I'm pretty sure he's a big enough academic to warrant an article if anyone chooses to make one). rʨanaɢ ^talk/_contribs 16:55, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

The primary reason why I've removed those two was due to the overall restructuring I made to the page, which I hadn't single anyone of them out for removal for any specific reason other than that of being a redlink; but rather it was based on that of the article having an excessive amount of redlinks, which I find to be working against it, as a few entries were dubious inputs added by those trouble making Anon IPs a few weeks back due to the problem that had arise as seen in the news. Kopassus

The Kopassus article is indeed a problem – good to see that you have noticed.

User:Starstylers recent edits are indeed very POV and from what I can see often based on a misuse of referencing, emotive language, and the insertion of info not related. I am not in favour of his edits over the last few days, but rather than a blanket revert (which on balance is probably counter-productive), my initial thought was to fix it one bit at a time with clear edit summaries – you’ll notice I started that process. However, I don’t have time to check each shoddy use of referencing, etc.

In his (admittedly weak) defence, the article was fairly poorly written before he came a long. Much info was missing about Kopassus’ structure, history, activities, and was more a listing of controversies that the group has been involved in. And, yes, it did have a POV tone the other way that perhaps focussed to heavily on allegations of human rights abuses – rather than being inaccurate, it was poorly referenced and undue weight. In my mind, Starstyler’s edits were a severe overreaction to that POV problem – he created a POV in the other direction instead.

Starstyler’s editing and his approach to the wikipedia community has long had me concerned. His comments on the article’s talk page, on User:Davidelit’s talk page shed some light on his approach (if you know what I mean). Also see the comment and link to his former talk page that I left on his talk page earlier today.

Thus, my suggestion is that the article be stripped of all dodgy info (stubbed right back if necessary). I’d rather see a short stub of quality than a whole pile of crap – no matter what the POV. I can do that later tonight if need be. Keep an eye out. If one places a tag, then one is obliged to explain and that could go in circles of POV dispute and be a lot of work for not much gain. It’s kinda giving the existing info some credibility. In my opinion, best to start again. If you don’t’ like what I do over the next day or so, it can be reverted!

Your Wiki etiquette faux pas

I note your lack of adherence to Wikipedia Etiquette with regard to following written procedure and notifying the aggrieved party of the alleged infraction of this subjective: "civility" issue. I am more than willing to overlook this error. I do question your interest in an issue which is tangential in extreme to yourself. I note with interest Merbabu effectively agrees with my edits and the rationale behind them. Though it does indeed raise the issue of conflict of interest. It could be charged Singaporeans and Australians, as beneficiaries of British theft/colonialism, is the issue of "conflict of interest" pertinent here? Does Mr Dave have an opinion on this- and perhaps can elucidate in manner a simple Malay may understand, to clarify whether or not you feel you may or may not have a conflict of interest with regards to any military article of Indoneisa- I keenly await your own learned views on "conflict of interest". Disagree. I did not speak for you at all. Furthermore, Singaporeans who are documented as being proud sophists (see Strait Times) whose historical/current governmental/social criminality against Indonesia. In short, an admittedly patriotic resident of the enemy parasite state (see David Nusa, OCBC, DBS et al) of Singapore cannot be trusted to contribute anything of marginal value on Indonesia. The prior statement reflects accurately Indonesian perception of Singapore and Singaporeans as parasite and enemies of Indonesia is very much the dominant well-established public/academic discourse in Indonesia, frequently in contemporary public rhetoric and thus deviation from this established truth constitutes original research/POV as identical to the wording of Wikipedia- as detailed on relevant articles on NPOV, VERIFIABLITY, ORIGINAL RESEARCH ETC125.161.130.52 (talk) 15:59, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

Airline House

• Note that the photographer had used a telephoto lens to get that particular shot from way outside the airport perimeter fencing (most likely from Alps Road, outside the East Perimeter Road of Changi Airport), I estimate it to be at least half a click out from the building's actual position. And if you don't mind the quality of it, by all means ask him for permission to reuse it for Wikipedia. PS: I have a better idea but its still waiting for approval, and unless the guys from Public Relations can expedite it, I don't wish for the CAAS to come after me for my unilateral actions. =/ --Dave1185 (talk) 17:30, 15 September 2009 (UTC)

In that case I would like to see how your idea works out. A high quality photo of the SIA HQ would be great! Anyway, in my country it isn't a problem if I choose to photograph airport facilities from the non-secure area of the airport; I posted photos of the FAA air traffic control facilities and the Houston Airport System HQ, for instance. • Yeah, ever since the attacks of September 11th, the security has been beefed up all around the airport areas. Whilst on duty the other day, I took a snapshot of the building but an auxiliary police officer came up behind me and told me to delete the image or he will have to take action against me, citing the Protected Places Act as the main reason. So it looks like its best to get the appropriate clearance first before I do something stupid again. As the boys in blues says: No security pass = No entry; No permit = No photo! =( --Dave1185 (talk) 19:41, 15 September 2009 (UTC)

Mi CASA su CASA

Dave, thanks for the help at EADS CASA. I've been trying to keep that poor Typhoon pic out of the article for several monts. Oddly, the same image always comes back, and always at 180px! IIRC, the main production for the A400M is at CASA, not so for the Typhoon, which is not primarily an EADS product like the A400M is. That's why I've felt it does not belong, in addition to the page being too crowded. I can read a little in Spanish, but I need a translator to get the tenses, etc, but I don't try to write for Spanish WP. That site has just over 500.000 article now, but it needs much more work in aviation, though they have been expanding that field in the past couple of years. Yet, amazingly, the barely literate in English of all other languages keep coming to English WP, and wonder why their "contributions" are not accepted. We have two Italian-speaking users who keep making additions to "correct" the reputation of Italian aircraft, and both get very angry if we don't accept their contributions wholesale. One is banned from it.wp, but I don't know about the other one (though I suspect he may be also). I suspect many of the other non-fluent in English users have the same problems with their own languages' wikis! People seem to forget WP is an encylopedia, not a "hand across the world" social networking site! Sino-Indian War

This article has been a huge source of controversy ever since it was started. I believe in Wikipedia's NPOV policy but lately I feel that a lot of anti-India bias has found its way into the article. Having read Calvin's and Maxwell's reports on the matter, I'm aware that India did undertake certain actions and make certain gestures that prompted China to respond in the way it did but this article looks like it is starting to blame the entire war on India which is not correct either. Also there are several points of contention that I am not particularly happy with (i.e. the claim about the annexation of Goa). While it's true that India did forcefully incorporate Goa into the Republic China did the SAME thing with Tibet and I'm pretty sure the latter resulted in far more civilian deaths and suffering. Yet in spite of that, the article claims that China only "entered" Tibet but the Wikipedia article (and many reputable sources) refer to it as an invasion. I don't want to make changes that will only serve to exacerbate the situation but maybe the whole page needs to be protected and the questionable content discussed/removed.

• His dog got killed at 10 this morning. Poor bastard tried to attack a UPS truck driving through the neighborhood. UPS guy hit his Rottweiler/Basset Hound mix and crushed his skull. I'm hoping you are an actual editor of Wiki, and not just a contributor like myself. I'm contacting you because your name appears in the Wiki Discussion relating to the Tien Shan Pai article.

I would appreciate some guidance as to how to deal with another "contributor" in what has become the Tien Shan Pai "lineage wars" discussion. This other contributor, "Junzi", represents a minority point of view (vis a vis the universe of TSP practitioners.) From reading his posts over the past year and a half, it's clear he's speaking for Huang Chinen Liang (who, I suspect, is his teacher.)

Junzi's favorite tactics are burying the opposition in verbiage and specious arguments. He asks for others to come forward and join in the discussion (and remember, we are talking about "oral history" here)... and yet, when people (with no stake in the lineage) but who have actually lived through the events do so, he is disrespectful and dismissive of what they have to say.

In good faith, I have tried to carry on an objective discussion with him, but he keeps positing as "factual" things that are hear-say, (or popular fictions from folklore) and then using this hear-say, etc. to spin off even more outlandish assumptions... which he again posits as factual and true.

The over-arching problem is, that even though Wiki is written by consensus, it is read and relied upon by many... often as an introduction to a given topic. What appears in a Wiki article is often copied and pasted on other people's websites. Unfortunately, as we are all aware, not all contributors to Wiki articles are agendaless.

The TSP entry in Wiki was started years ago by Huang's students in what appears to have been an easy P.R. opportunity for Huang and his school. Despite his protests to the contrary, Junzi continues to maintain the position of "watch dog" for Huang's interests and agenda. Junzi does so despite massive primary source evidence to the contrary that is has come to light within the past 2-3 years, and that reasonably challenges the "ancient origins" legend of TSP.

My own feeling is that a lineage war is not something to be decided via Wiki (based on who talks the loudest, or who can write the most words)... nor should it be. This is something for the remaining disciples of Wang Jyue Jen (the founder of the system) to work out among themselves.

For a large claimed readership, it would seem that the supporting sources are kind of thin. But I wonder, what is the approximate minimum readership needed for a magazine to be considered "notable"? India not "simple"!

• IF you know how to press their button, it is quite fun actually. IMO, they are no different from the Pakis, you just have to voice out to them in a sensible and honest manner to reason with them but don't go hurting their ego, their pride is sky high due to an extremely rigid Patriarch social hierarchy where male ego and chauvinism plays a very important role (no different from Pakistan). Yeah, the Indians and the Pakistanis are like two old brothers who never got along. They are so alike in many ways, but they can't see that because of their sibling rivalry. The Indians especially like to rail agaisnt "Western" bias, but their own biases are worse, IMO, and again they can't see it. But don't get me wrong, I love Indian people and culture, and often watch Bollywood movies. I've even been in love with an Indian girl. The "All _____ are equal, but some ______ are more equal than others" philosophy underlies many of their views, so one has to be aware of that, and not be fooled by their openess to all views. They have their absolute beliefs just like the rest of us humans! I once saw something, probably added to the Tejas article, that the Tejas was the first in the world to be produced solely by a governemt-owned industry. Of course that left out Soviet industries, but anyway, is it any wonder that the Tejas has been in development for over 25 years, and is still not in production?? Don't even think about going on an India defense forum and ask about the 1857 Mutiny (ie or 1st War of Independence to some). No way they can discuss it rationally. They were going to have an anniversary parade in New Delhi celebrating the "heroes" of the 1857 Mutiny/War of Independence. Caused a huge rift in the Indian Army. Some officers in the Indian Army had served the British Raj and saw those in the Mutiny as having no honor and the other half saw them as loyalists who should be honored. The Indian government eventually ordered the parade canceled and also any discussion of what happened in 1857 between officers as a court martial offense. And remember our civil war started three years later and lasted far longer. But, as bad as discussing issues with the ancestors of the former British Raj is, they don't come close to any discussion on the Balkans. There is one very well known webpage for military photos, that has banned ANY postings on Balkans (ie especially former Yugoslavia). Main reason was the cyper attacks against their site and their servers. Makes vandalism on Wikipedia look mild in comparison. If one day it was announced that the powers that be at WP ordered all articles on the Balkans deleted, it would not surprise me a bit.
