List of descriptive plant species epithets

Hello, Dank,

Since these pages have been moved around a lot, there have been a lot of broken redirects that were deleted. You can see them at the Broken Redirect list. Since you were involved with these moves, I thought if there were some you wanted to restore, you could see which ones have been deleted and decide if there were any you wanted to restore and correct to the new page title. In general, if you leave a redirect when you move a page, then the bots will change all of the old redirects to point to the new page location. If you don't leave a redirect, then the old redirects are broken and are deleted, either by a patrolling admin or by AnomieBOT III. Thank you. Liz ^{Read! Talk!} 21:41, 2 December 2021 (UTC)

That's great, and well deserved! So, if I can be of help to make these lists shine, now's the time! Which of the two will it be?

I didn't notice anything I would call a “mistranslation”, maybe just a few variations of interpretation. One that comes to mind is the translation of amygdalinus, amygdaliformis, amygdaloides as "almond", which of course catches the common root of these three terms. If we want to be more exact, a circumlocution like “resembling an almond” might better fit all three. More to my taste would be splitting up the three, so that we could have amygdaliformis = “almond-shaped” and amygdalinus, amygdaloides = “resembling an almond”. These latter two might well refer to other resemblances than the shape, although I don't have an example for that. ◅ Sebastian 22:02, 23 February 2022 (UTC)

Etymology question

Hi, Dan! I am seeking a source for the common name of Symphyotrichum adnatum. The epithet is in the protologue, but the common name, scaleleaf aster, is something I'd also like to put in the etymology section for the article (expanding.. see here). Do you happen to know where I could find that type of information, or do you have a source for common names of plants? Eewilson (talk) 21:47, 27 December 2021 (UTC)

Quattrocchi's CRC World Dictionary is my go-to for common names, but it doesn't have that one (or even the genus for that one). Coombes has the genus but not the species. Sorry. What about Aster adnatus? Depends on the date of the book. The species' genus was changed in the mid-1990s, and it was also in Lasallea and Virgulus at some time. What would the "usual online sources" be for the etymology of a common name? :) Eewilson (talk) 22:03, 27 December 2021 (UTC)

Quattrocchi is no help for any of those. Gbif.org lists the common name, and there are other helpful sites listed under the "names" tab for this species at eol.org, but it's probably less than you're looking for.
