Phenoxyacetic acid edit

Hi Danidq1, thank you for creating an account and joining those who wish to contribute to Wikipedia. I note that you have jumped straight in and submitted for review the Draft:Phenoxyacetic Acid. Creating articles of adequate quality to be used in an encyclopaedia like Wikipedia is difficult and can be daunting. The usual recommendation to new editors is that they start by improving existing articles on topics with which they are familiar and that they perhaps join Project Teams working in specific areas, such as that for chemistry — see WP:WikiProject Chemicals.

I am not a new article reviewer but I can advise you that the Draft:Phenoxyacetic Acid is very unlikely to be accepted in "its current form".. There are many problems with the draft but the main issue is that the chemical itself is of marginal chemical notability. It happens to be a part-structure in several notable herbicides including 2,4-D and MCPA but these are derivatives, not the parent compound. For that reason, I would recommend that you merge your useful work (for example on the Chembox) into the existing article Phenoxy herbicide, where phenoxyacetic acid naturally sits as the simplest example, although it is not itself either a herbicide or a fungicide, contrary to what your draft says. This can be confirmed by searching by its molecular formula in the "Compendium of Pesticide Common Names"., which is a comprehensive list of such chemicals.

There are many other deficiencies in your article.

  • There is no reference source for the statement "Phenoxyacetic acids [sic] can be found in cacao and cacao products as a food additive."
  • It is not "a compound containing an anisole where the methane group is linked to an acetic acid". It is rather phenol linked to acetic acid (anisoles are O-methyl phenols)
  • You cannot form the compound by alkylating methyl phenol, you have to use simply phenol itself. The phenyl does not "bind to the aliphatic acetic acid" but rather forms an ether bond to it.
  • The compound is not a strong acid. The quoted pKa of 3.7 is a calculated value and may be incorrect but to a first approximation the compound will have similar acidity to acetic acid (vinegar), not considered a strong acid.
  • (Worst of all) The compound is not "involved in the rosiglitazone metabolism pathway". If you look carefully at the reference you cite, you will see that one of the metabolites is a phenoxyacetic acid derivative: it could not possibly be the parent compound as that would involve the reductive cleavage of a phenyl-C bond which simply won't happen.
  • I have no idea what you intended to cite in the reference to the World news website. You have just given a link to the top level of the website, no specific source within it.

Please don't be put off by all these issues. As I said, writing articles from scratch is hard and competence is required. If you are happy to follow my suggestion of improving the phenoxy herbicide article, I will happily collaborate with you on that and provide further guidance if required. I think I have remove incorrect stuff. Note wn.com is not a reference that I would ever use! Graeme Bartlett (talk) 10:53, 17 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
Following Graeme's acceptance of the article (after he had tidied it up) I have also contributed today so that it now looks OK from my perspective. I'll add to the phenoxy herbicide article some additional items. Mike Turnbull (talk) 17:17, 17 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
