DanceSport

edit

I edited DanceSport for style and content. The biggest change was the removal of the Olympic section. Until it is approved as at least a future exhibition or at least competitive sport, the information is unencyclopedic for a general-purpose encyclopedia. The information might be more suitable for an encyclopedia of dance or an encyclopedia of sport, but that's not what Wikipedia is. I did leave in a blurb about how one of the governing bodies is recognized by the IOC, which makes it clear the sport is an IOC-recognized sport. Please review my changes for accuracy and correct any mistakes. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs)/(e-mail) 01:00, 23 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your reply. With a few exceptions, nobody on Wikipedia has "authority" other than what they've picked up as either a topic expert or a seasoned editor familiar with Wikipedia standards. You are correct, my expertise in Olymipcs and DanceSport is lacking. However, I am quite familiar with Wikipedia editing standards. I was concerned about the overall tone of your article, it was crossing the line from "general encyclopedic interest" to promotional, which is very much frowned upon. There were also cases of trivia and too-many-examples, such as the case with the television shows. In an encyclopedia, concise is better than wordy if it gets the point across.
Please correct any factual mistakes I made. I reduced the length because in my personal opinion, much of the material that I removed sounded promotional, was too wordy, or was otherwise in need of editing. I tried to reword what I could but what I couldn't reword I deleted.
As far as the Olympics goes, if there is a scheduled date at which the sport will be played in the Olympics, then by all means put it in the article. Otherwise, in my personal opinion, it is premature. However, you might want to get some other editors' opinions on this. Good places to ask are Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Sports and Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Olympics.
Both of us have the same goal, I hope: To make Wikipedia a better encyclopedia. Keep in mind, sometimes less is better.
I hope this helps. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs)/(e-mail) 17:23, 24 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
