Recent changes
- A more efficient way of sending changes from Wikidata to Wikimedia wikis that show them has been enabled for the following 10 wikis: mediawiki.org, the Italian, Catalan, Hebrew and Vietnamese Wikipedias, French Wikisource, and English Wikivoygage, Wikibooks, Wiktionary and Wikinews. If you notice anything strange about how changes from Wikidata appear in recent changes or your watchlist on those wikis you can let the developers know.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 5 October. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 6 October. It will be on all wikis from 7 October (calendar).
- Some gadgets and bots that use the API to read the AbuseFilter log might break. The
hidden
property will no longer say an entry isimplicit
for unsuppressed log entries about suppressed edits. If your bot needs to know this, do a separate revision query. Additionally, the property will have the valuefalse
for visible entries; previously, it wasn't included in the response. [1] - A more efficient way of sending changes from Wikidata to Wikimedia wikis that show them will be enabled for all production wikis. If you notice anything strange about how changes from Wikidata appear in recent changes or your watchlist you can let the developers know.
Future changes
- You can soon get cross-wiki notifications in the iOS Wikipedia app. You can also get notifications as push notifications. More notification updates will follow in later versions. [2]
- The JavaScript variables
wgExtraSignatureNamespaces
,wgLegalTitleChars
, andwgIllegalFileChars
will soon be removed frommw.config
. These are not part of the "stable" variables available for use in wiki JavaScript. [3] - The JavaScript variables
wgCookiePrefix
,wgCookieDomain
,wgCookiePath
, andwgCookieExpiration
will soon be removed from mw.config. Scripts should instead usemw.cookie
from the "mediawiki.cookie" module. [4]

Could you keep an eye on that one? The IP has a bad case of WP:ICANTHEARYOU and WP:NOBLECAUSE as well. --Orange Mike | Talk 05:06, 14 October 2021 (UTC)
- That article has long been on my watchlist. I agree it's a hopeless FRINGE/NPOV-fail magnet and no constructive IP/newbie edits back as far as I feel like looking, one of the few places where indef-semi is reasonable. DMacks (talk) 06:25, 14 October 2021 (UTC)

Future changes
- The developers of the Wikipedia Android app are working on communication in the app. You can now answer questions in survey to help the development.
- 3–5% of editors may be blocked in the next few months. This is because of a new service in Safari, which is similar to a proxy or a VPN. It is called iCloud Private Relay. There is a discussion about this on Meta. The goal is to learn what iCloud Private Relay could mean for the communities.
- Wikimedia Enterprise is a new API for those who use a lot of information from the Wikimedia projects on other sites. It is a way to get big commercial users to pay for the data. ‘Edits we’re not constructive’
Salutations!
I was enlightened that any contribution to interminable disruptive, dispensable modifications will repudiate and confiscate my contemporary (specified) privileges. Which, indeed, my privileges are miniature. I sincerely apologise for my contribution to unnecessary edits. However, from what you mentioned, these edits were ‘Tests’.
I can comprehend that this is no exception, however, I can assure you that I didn’t make any edits which had to be reverted. (No harm was caused, I reverted the edits).
Additionally, I am apprised of Wikipedia’s policy; I had no intentions of contributing to disruptive edits. In case you weren’t aware, I have made contributions to helping Wikipedia enhance its articles and hope to continue doing so.
I once again apologise.

why you remove doi and url of reference
sir, detailed references from Dienone–phenol_rearrangement this article was removed by you. why u removed url and doi? Rahulsoman (talk) 20:30, 26 October 2021 (UTC)
- Hi Rahulsoman,
- I removed only
|url=
not also|doi=
, and only in cases where there also was a doi. A full web-link to a publisher's website is fragile because publishers sometimes re-organize their websites. The doi tag automatically creates a link that is stable regardless of publisher changes. So a doi link is more useful and will never require someone to come around later and update it. At least one of the url links also included session, user, or site-specific access tokens, which are not correct for others in any situation. For ACS journals in particular, the links appeared to be directly to the full-article PDF, which would usually only be viable readers who subscribe to it. The link via the doi leads to the abstract (free access) that also has a link to the article, supporting info, and other material. DMacks (talk) 20:56, 26 October 2021 (UTC)- Hi DMacks,
Sorry for a later reply to the detailed write-up. Anyway, I am happy to see the edit it really looks professional, now the reference section looks very elegant. thanks for the edit. Yes if URL is missing also no problem doi is sufficient to direct the reader to the main article. I used to edit from places where we have the full assess to ACS journals. so I may not have noticed the difference. thank you, sir. keep contributing. Rahulsoman (talk) 19:32, 3 November 2021 (UTC)
- You're welcome! There's no deadline here:) I'm always glad to see new and improved chemistry-related articles whenever they appear. DMacks (talk) 20:48, 3 November 2021 (UTC)
Nonmetal FAC
G'day DMacks. Are you able to chime in to the FAC nomination for this one? Thank you, Sandbh (talk) 07:07, 5 November 2021 (UTC)
- Hi Sandbh, unfortunately I don't have time right now to do a detailed look. But others' substantive comments and the changes in response to them all look great. I agree that this is an important topic, and thanks to all for bringing it up to such a high WP standard! DMacks (talk) 11:08, 7 November 2021 (UTC)
Request aquote for the article (ali tajdary)
Hello, good day, please suggest Ali Tajdary article as well, he nominated my article for removal while it has the most valid links and can be cited both in terms of reading and acting, please write your opinion about the article , I think a group is colluding to delete this article.
according to wikipedia rules, a singer is valid if he has two famous albums, or has given concerts in the country, or his songs have been used in movies and series, (ali tajdary) has all of the above, secondly, if he is an actor he has played a significant role in several important films in terms of (acting), (ali tajdary) has acted in seven important films, in all of which he was the first male role, and also his film (fourth round) won two awards at the russian film festival, the (special Love Line) series with his acting has been the most watched tv series in iran (25 million views). the film (the butterfly) with his acting has won the first male role award in the holy defense festival.
Also, all his movies, series and albums are registered on Wikipedia. All links are the most reputable news links in Iran.
I really do not know the reason for the nomination for removal and the people who commented clearly did not pay attention to any of the above. Hoseinkandovan (talk) 10:40, 7 November 2021 (UTC)
- Hi Hoseinkandovan,

Recent changes
- Mobile IP editors are now able to receive warning notices indicating they have a talk page message on the mobile website (similar to the orange banners available on desktop). These notices will be displayed on every page outside of the main namespace and every time the user attempts to edit. The notice on desktop now has a slightly different colour. [8][9]
Changes later this week
- Wikidata will be read-only for a few minutes on 11 November. This will happen around 06:00 UTC. This is for database maintenance. [10]
- There is no new MediaWiki version this week.
Future changes
- In the future, unregistered editors will be given an identity that is not their IP address. This is for legal reasons. A new user right will let editors who need to know the IPs of unregistered accounts to fight vandalism, spam, and harassment, see the IP. You can read the suggestions for how that identity could work and discuss on the talk page.

Podcast cover art rules
How are the rules for Nolan Investigates podcast different than the rules for, for example The Teacher's Pet cover art (here) or the Can I Pet Your Dog? cover art (here)? Why does {{Non-free use rationale 2}} and {{Non-free album cover}} cover those ones, but not this one? --Eievie (talk) 05:37, 14 November 2021 (UTC)
- It's the same. The reason I deleted your file off Commons is exactly part of that sameness, but in two ways that might not be obvious. First, File:The Teachers Pet.jpg is uploaded locally to English Wikipedia whereas you uploaded to commons:File:Nolan Investigates Stonewall.jpg. Click on each of those and look at the globe logo and browser URL to compare. Commons's rules forbid non-free content altogether, whereas enwiki does allow it in certain limited situations (those two templates you found). A second difference is that those other two examples are in use in live articles, whereas you are working on a draft-space page. Enwiki non-free content rules only allow these images for live articles (content criterion #7). Once Draft:Nolan Investigates gets moved to mainspace, it would be allowable to upload the cover-art locally to enwiki for it. DMacks (talk) 05:48, 14 November 2021 (UTC)

ArbCom 2021 Elections voter message
Rejection of Draft:Atypical Advantage.
Hey, can you please tell me exactly what I can do to upload my article? I won't bother trying again if there no way it goes up. I believe my article gives key information about a company that has a unique initiative in my eyes atleast. I am in no way related to the company and would like to know what makes my article look like an advertisement. Ojasgoel15 (talk) 10:38, 26 November 2021 (UTC)
Zwitter ion
"Because tautomers are different compounds, they sometimes have different enough structures that they can be detected independently in their mixture. This allows experimental analysis of the equilibrium. Nagy, Peter I.; Takács-Novák, Krisztina (1997). "Theoretical and Experimental Studies of the Zwitterion ⇌ Neutral Form Equilibrium of Ampholytes in Pure Solvents and Mixtures". J. Am. Chem. Soc. 119 (21): 4999–5006. doi:10.1021/ja963512f."
I am extremely dubious about the claim. Proton hopping in aqueous solution is a fast reaction, so a vis/uv spectrum will be a time-average of the spectrum of a mixture of isomers. It would cost me USD 40 to view the article cited above. Thank you for deleting the file:Copper(I)-nitrate-3D-model.png. My name is Hoa112008. I know that the old file is incorrect and now the new file is more accurate. My account, the password is too easy, so someone other than me stole it to violate the policy, so it is natural to be locked. I understand, but that account doesn't work. Can you teach me how to secure my account and get the admin to block the file renaming and category renaming functions to keep them from doing bad things?

Hello DMacks Merry Christmas In Advance. I hope you're doing well. I came across your edit in Ashi Singh, where you removed the file from media section. Administrators' newsletter – December 2021
News and updates for administrators from the past month (November 2021).

Administrators will no longer be autopatrolled
A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. To find out when the change has gone live or if you have any questions please visit the Administrator's Noticeboard. 20:05, 7 December 2021 (UTC)
Not cool
I spent a day fixing broken code in this Wikipedia article. 30 min after I submit the correction, you removed it. I actually did wonder why the detailed code and that's why I didn't transfer my edit to the French WP, I wanted to see if this was a good fix. You could've at least slide a “sorry” in the commit message.

ad Hock
Yes, I confess to being slightly obsessive (if that is not a contradiction) about Ullmann... So I was reading about acetophenone and Ullmann points out that most is produced as a side degradation product of cumene hydroperoxide. Its not really a Hock rearrangement. Corrections, suggestions, etc always welcome. Happy New Year, BTW. --Smokefoot (talk) 02:52, 30 December 2021 (UTC)
- I agree Ullmann is a great ref, one I sadly don't have access to. Sometimes it feels a bit too WP:TERTIARY but even then it's a great lead-ref for more (if I ever get time to track them down). Industrial processes are fascinating and unlike what I do...in this case I had no idea that the main route was just a byproduct ("waste stream") of a different process. Acetophenone is a great model substrate for all sorts of teaching excercises, both lecture and lab. Happy New Year as well! DMacks (talk) 15:52, 30 December 2021 (UTC)

- The functionaries email list (functionaries-en lists.wikimedia.org) will no longer accept incoming emails apart from those sent by list members and WMF staff. Private concerns, apart from those requiring oversight, should be directly sent to the Arbitration Committee.
How we will see unregistered users
Hi!
You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.
When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.
Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.
If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.
We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.
Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Recent changes
- A
oauth_consumer
variable has been added to the AbuseFilter to enable identifying changes made by specific tools. [18] - Gadgets are now able to directly include JSON pages. This means some gadgets can now be configured by administrators without needing the interface administrator permission, such as with the Geonotice gadget. [19]
- Gadgets can now specify page actions on which they are available. For example,
|actions=edit,history
will load a gadget only while editing and on history pages. [20] - Gadgets can now be loaded on demand with the
withgadget
URL parameter. This can be used to replace an earlier snippet that typically looks likewithJS
orwithCSS
. [21] - At wikis where the Mentorship system is configured, you can now use the Action API to get a list of a mentor's mentees. [22]
- The heading on the main page can now be configured using MediaWiki:Mainpage-title-loggedin for logged-in users and MediaWiki:Mainpage-title for logged-out users. Any CSS that was previously used to hide the heading should be removed. [23] [24]
- Four special pages (and their API counterparts) now have a maximum database query execution time of 30 seconds. These special pages are: RecentChanges, Watchlist, Contributions, and Log. This change will help with site performance and stability. You can read more details about this change including some possible solutions if this affects your workflows. [25]
- The sticky header has been deployed for 50% of logged-in users on more than 10 wikis. This is part of the Desktop Improvements. See how to take part in the project.

- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 11 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 12 January. It will be on all wikis from 13 January (calendar).

DMACKS user is editing false information on a page.
Differently than you, my IP address is public, and does not affect the fact you are contributing to vandalise a page with false information. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Otto-Christian von Bismarck (talk • contribs) 04:51, 11 January 2022 (UTC)

Question about Encyclopedia editing
Hi DMacks!
I'm a producer on a podcast and we are doing an episode about Encyclopedia Britannica and Wikipedia. I'm reaching out because I noticed you post a lot on the wiki page for errors in EB that have been corrected on Wikipedia. I have some more specific questions for you, could you reach out to me directly
Thanks in advance.
