Malaysian motorsport

Have no problem if there are multiple articles. Like to think there could be more than two before creating a subcat because it's not as though the main Malaysian sport categories are groaning with overload, but my primary objection was there being a subcat of one. That just seemed totally unneccessary. --Falcadore (talk) 11:34, 5 April 2014 (UTC)

Template:Campaignbox Military Operations: Belgium and northern France 1914

Thanks for the edit but what does noinclude do? ThanksKeith-264 (talk) 06:50, 15 April 2014 (UTC)

In general terms, any text between the <noinclude> and the </noinclude> doesn't get included in the articles which transclude the template. So in this case, it means that the template will be included in Category:Campaignbox templates and Category:World War I campaignbox templates (which we want), but the articles which transclude the template won't (which we wouldn't want, because those articles aren't templates, and hence don't belong in template categories). See WP:NOINCLUDE for more information. Regards. DH85868993 (talk) 07:21, 15 April 2014 (UTC)
Thanks very much, I only know enough to copy templates and then change the wording for a new one. RegardsKeith-264 (talk) 09:33, 15 April 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for the info. I fear I may have done a few more than you found. I have to re-trace my steps (trying to fix some of my errors in a few edits anyway...) I had seen other series done like this and thought this to be the norm. sorry bout that. btw, is there any difference in sorting between GP and F1? MotorOilStains (talk) 05:10, 21 April 2014 (UTC)

As far as I'm aware, they are sorted the same. DH85868993 (talk) 23:47, 21 April 2014 (UTC)

Re: Qualifying Tables

Wow. Somehow haven't realized such data exists! Thanks a lot! Am hoping to embark on a project to build a table and report for every single F1 article in the '80s, similar to the 1981 Italian GP. A mountain ahead... L. Zheng Wei (talk) 13:02, 28 April 2014 (UTC)

Coventry Climax and Lotus Elite

Hi. I was about to click (Thank) on your minor edit on the sports car racing link edit on Coventry Climax, when I realized that the change you made was exactly the same as what I almost made a day earlier. You and I know quite well the concept of "Sports Car" do not generally apply to "Sports Car Racing" where most serious contenders have been prototype racing cars since the 1950's. However, the link in the article is for Lotus Elite, which was a series production sports car (or a GT, according to FIA classification), and not a prototype racing car that is described in sports car racing article for the era. Linking the successes to [[sports car racing]] may be more appropriate for DOHC 'FWC' or 'FWMC' engines, not the series production SOHC 'FWE'. So while I don't like the "[[sports car]] racing" very much, I decided against making the change you made. What's your opinion? Yiba (talk | contribs) 10:42, 21 May 2014 (UTC)

I guess I've just always considered sports car racing to always include both production sports cars and prototypes, but I haven't really thought about it too deeply. If you think "[[sports car]] racing" is more appropriate in this particular instance, then that's fine with me. DH85868993 (talk) 11:15, 21 May 2014 (UTC)
Hmmm. May be my perception on the word "sports car racing" is off. I just realized the article "Sports prototype" does exist separately from sports car racing. Let me think it over. Yiba (talk | contribs) 11:29, 21 May 2014 (UTC)

Updating AAMCO

Hi DH85868993!

Thanks for your help on the AAMCO edits. I was wondering if you had any tips about how i might be able to move that project along? I've asked for help in all the projects that the page is listed as a part of, but no response as yet. What would be the best way (from your viewpoint) to make this happen?

Aftab Banoori (Talk) 01:34, 5 September 2014 (UTC)

Hi Aftabbanoori. You are correct that Lotus Supercenter does not currently lead to an article. But if you look at Special:WhatLinksHere/Lotus Supercenter, you will see that other articles link to Lotus Supercenter. At MOS:DABRL it says "A link to a non-existent article (a "red link") should only be included on a disambiguation page when an article (not just disambiguation pages) also includes that red link." Which means it's OK for a red link to be included on a disambiguation page when other articles also include that red link, which is the case here. Regards. DH85868993 (talk) 01:48, 5 September 2014 (UTC)
Actually, I notice you have been removing a lot of "broken links". Are you aware that as a general rule, it's OK for articles to contain red links? They merely indicate articles which haven't been written yet - see WP:REDLINK for more info. Regards. DH85868993 (talk) 02:04, 5 September 2014 (UTC)

Hi DH, Thanks for your appreciation of edit on Williams' page. Not sure if it was the minor edit to career details or the death date correction!! I nominated this for deletion after deleting the user's userpage for the umpteenth time because he doesn't seem to meet GNG or anything else. I don't know if you have it in your watchlist, but I figured I'd let you know since you moved it to article space. Maybe you can save it. Cheers! §FreeRangeFrogcroak 22:35, 30 October 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for letting me know. I'm also not confident that he meets GNG; my main aim was just to move an article out of template space; if it subsequently gets deleted then so be it. DH85868993 (talk) 22:46, 30 October 2014 (UTC)

Thoughts about Vincenzo Sospiri's legacy

hi DH85868993,

Regarding this edit:

I must admit I'm somewhat confused by that article, because while I have read the Daily Mail reference, it doesn't really make sense. I don't know if it's and editing mistake or that there is another Vincenzo Sospiri from back in the days and this is a case of mistaken identity, but the hero Schumacher describes does not at all sound like the Vincenzo Sospiri whose Wikipedia article it is added to.

  • In the Daily Mail article, Schumacher says "the only heroes I really had were in the karting days", so that's either between 1976 (or karting) or 1981 (professional karting) and 1987. Vincenso Sospiri started karting in 1981.
  • Then Schumacher said "They were so special in their own way, dominating the karting world." This Vincenso Sospiri didn't win the championship until 1987, at which time Schumacher himself had actually been 'dominating karting' (national and European championships) and was about to make the switch to car racing in 1988.

So if this is the same Vincenzo Sospiri and/or the name is correct, Schumacher would be saying one of his heroes was another kid who drove karts in a different country at the same time as him, but much less successful.

Can you understand why I'm confused about it? Why I think there might either be a confusion of identities? What are your thoughts when considering those things?

~cheers GameLegend (talk) 21:48, 1 November 2014 (UTC)

Hi GameLegend. I think it is the same Vincenzo Sospiri. historicracing.com and driverdb.com indicate that Sospiri achieved the following between 1983 and 1987:
  • 1st 1982 Italian Junior 100cc Karting Championship
  • 1st 1983 Italian Junior 100cc Karting Championship
  • 1st 1984 Italian Intercontinental Karting Championship
  • 1st 1984 100cc European Intercontinental Karting Championship
  • 2nd 1985 Italian Intercontinental Karting Championship
  • 1st 1986 125cc Italian Karting Championship
  • 1st 1986 100cc European Karting Championship
  • 1st 1987 100cc World Karting Championship
  • 2nd 1987 125cc World Karting Championship
  • 2nd 1987 Italian 125cc Karting Championship
so I think it's fair to say he was "dominating". But I understand your confusion - that information isn't properly reflected in Sospiri's article (and I confess I wasn't aware of it until I went looking in order to write this reply). Regards. DH85868993 (talk) 23:57, 1 November 2014 (UTC)
Wow, shows how easy an unfair image can be formed. Thanks for your research. I'm gonna try and work that into his article. GameLegend (talk) 16:30, 2 November 2014 (UTC)

Jacky Ickx

Hello DH,

On my list of things to do is to try to "upgrade" Ickx's page a bit. It lacks refs., there are some inaccuracies & the wiki-linking is somewhat haphazard, though I've now gone through & tweaked them up a bit. However, on making a start I got as far as the first para.!! I believe that the 1966 German Grand Prix was the one where Ickx & John Taylor crashed on the first lap resulting in Taylor's subsequent death from burns. The article though states that Ickx drove through the field before retiring after 12 laps. The Guinness Who's Who (1994 Ed) says transmission failure (lap not given) and the Marlboro Grand Prix Guide (1950-82) says "accident" lap not given but after that of Clark (lap 11). Guinness who's who says 1967 was the year Ickx drove through and then retired with suspension failure. Do you have anything on the early race? Thanks. Regards, Eagleash (talk) 19:30, 9 November 2014 (UTC)

I'll have a look in my books when I get home tonight. If you haven't heard anything in 24 hours, give me a nudge :-) DH85868993 (talk) 23:57, 9 November 2014 (UTC)
In the meantime, grandprix.com's report of the 1966 race describes the collision between Taylor and Ickx and shows Ickx as retiring due to an accident after 1 lap, which makes sense. Their report on the 1967 race mentions Ickx being the 3rd fastest qualifier, making his way through the field and retiring after 12 laps with suspension failure. So in the first paragraph of Jacky Ickx#Formula One, I think everything after the first sentence is describing the 1967 race, not the 1966 race. DH85868993 (talk) 00:18, 10 November 2014 (UTC)
I was just about to post the grandprix.com report on your page!! I agree the article has muddled the 66 & 67 races & that it makes sense if Ickx retired after spinning off, but he could have recovered & continued. Crash.net & chicane.net don't mention the F2 runners & the MotorSport Magazine archive is no help...disappointingly, as their report is likely to be reliable. Thanks. Eagleash (talk) 01:04, 10 November 2014 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) Silhouet states that Ickx retired on lap 1 in 1966 due to an accident and that he reached lap 12 in 1967 before retiring with front suspension failure. Both years show him as an F2 driver. GyaroMaguus 01:57, 10 November 2014 (UTC)
I think it's reasonably clear that Ickx retired lap 1, & article should be amended accordingly. Not sure what would be the best ref to use though. Eagleash (talk) 09:46, 10 November 2014 (UTC)
The article already says that he retired on lap 1 - the "Laps" column = laps completed, so "0" in the Laps column means he retired on lap 1. DH85868993 (talk) 10:38, 10 November 2014 (UTC)
Yes I know, well that's what it says in the GER GP article, but the Ickx wording originally said he retired lap 12. I have amended the text to include the collision with Taylor & the 67 race details, but still need a good ref for the 66 race. Cheers.Eagleash (talk) 10:57, 10 November 2014 (UTC)
Oh, I see. I think grandprix.com should be good enough - it mentions the collision and shows both drivers as retirements due to an accident. If you're looking for something that specifically says Ickx retired on lap 1, page 24 of Mike Lang's Grand Prix! Vol 2 says "Retirements (Formula 2 class): J.Ickx (Matra-Ford) accident on lap 1". DH85868993 (talk) 20:24, 10 November 2014 (UTC)

OK I'll use grandprix.com. I imagine you'll be keeping an eye on the page as I'm sure I'll make multiple errors.:P Regards, Eagleash (talk) 21:00, 10 November 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for sorting out the headings; I was pretty certain I'd done it wrong, but got called away & then forgot! Eagleash (talk) 12:39, 17 November 2014 (UTC)

For what have we this "0"?--Unikalinho (talk) 07:39, 23 January 2015 (UTC)

All the Lotus F1 cars with two digit numbers (Lotus 16 to Lotus 99T) have a "0" in the sort key for Category:Lotus Formula One cars so that they appear in the correct numerical order in the category. If they didn't have the "0", they would appear after the cars with 3-digit numbers (Lotus 100T to Lotus 112). DH85868993 (talk) 11:43, 23 January 2015 (UTC)

On your recent edits

I forgot to thank you on your work going through various motorsport articles, and it seems every other article which uses a table, and fixing the background colour mark-up. Thanks QueenCake. If only it was "half the 'pedia" - there are still many thousands more (non-motorsport-related) articles that need to be fixed. But I think I'll take a break for a while - as you say, even though AWB makes it a lot easier, it still takes many hours and mouseclicks. Thanks again. DH85868993 (talk) 04:33, 25 January 2015 (UTC)
Yes, I've noticed your work as well. A big thank you there! I was actually wondering whether you are keeping track somehow what you have done and what still has to be done? If so, It would be helpful information and with it a couple of wikipedians could join forces and tackle this task much more swiftly. Tvx1 (talk) 20:12, 25 January 2015 (UTC)
I've done all the articles beneath Category:Motorsport, Category:Automobiles, Category:Aircraft, Category:Chess and Category:Golf (= about 140,000 articles in total, of which about 10,000 required updates), which only leaves "the rest of the encyclopedia" (4.6 million articles) still to do :-) To be honest, I was somewhat loath to publicise too widely what I was doing until I had at least completed all the motorsport articles (i.e. the ones about which I care the most), in case someone asked/told me to stop. But now that all the motorsport articles have been done, I'm less concerned about that, so I'd be happy for others to assist with the task (or even take it over completely). And what happened with the bot --Mdann52 was going to make to carry out these changes? Tvx1 (talk) 23:21, 25 January 2015 (UTC)
Mdann52 reported that they were finding it very difficult to code the bot, due to the wide variety of markup in use across the encyclopedia. Having done my runs with AWB, I can understand why - I had to manually adjust/correct many of the articles I edited after AWB had pre-processed them - I think it would be very difficult for a bot to "get it right" every time. P.S. I'm going out for about 11 hours now, so if you post another message I won't be able to reply until then. DH85868993 (talk) 23:47, 25 January 2015 (UTC)

I find I'm not very good at copyediting articles - I find it really hard to add content without copying sources word for word (which isn't allowed). I find I'm generally better working with tables, templates, categories, etc and ensuring consistency between articles. But thanks for the invitation. DH85868993 (talk) 10:51, 27 January 2015 (UTC)
Well, then I hope that you'll be able to help me in those departments, since I'm terrible with tables and templates. I need to get used to the whole concepts of those first. Zwerg Nase (talk) 15:32, 27 January 2015 (UTC)
Sure! DH85868993 (talk) 20:58, 27 January 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for the edits on the result tables. I learn more about how to do them properly everytime. Zwerg Nase (talk) 22:25, 28 January 2015 (UTC)
No worries - they're pretty complicated! FYI, you can find examples of each of the different F1 results tables here. Regards. DH85868993 (talk) 10:50, 29 January 2015 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) Took me an hour and a half just to figure out how to add one line and one result to Roy Salvadori (1954) yesterday. (And I'm not even sure there was any point to it anyway!) Eagleash (talk) 11:27, 29 January 2015 (UTC)
The tables have certainly "developed" over time - in 2004 they used to look like this! DH85868993 (talk) 11:33, 29 January 2015 (UTC)
Holy crap! It's good times we live in nowadays :D I had another look at the tables-page, there were some things I had overlooked last times around... Zwerg Nase (talk) 13:00, 29 January 2015 (UTC)

That's much like the football ones are still. Eagleash (talk) 23:42, 29 January 2015 (UTC)
